this is wjz tv, wjz hd and wjz.com, baltimore. >> from the city, to the counties, to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage, it's wjz, maryland's news station. silent killer, a home filled with people overcome by dangerous fumes. the household appliance that caused the deadly accident. good evening. i'm mary bubala. adam has the night off. deadly gas, two baltimore county men killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. kelly mcpherson explains that a total of 11 people were sickened by the fumes. >> reporter: eight people living with the two men who died were brought here to shock trauma for the hyperbaric

chamber. they too had been exposed to the deadly gas. two men never woke up if their pikesville home sunday morning. they most likely inhaled a deadly amount of carbon monoxide. eight other people living here, including two children, were overcome by the odorless gas and rushed to the hospital. >> it's just very emotional because it's a lot of people and we want to see what we can do to help the people, to bring comfort or support. >> reporter: community members are shocked that two neighbors died in a way that could happen to anyone. >> it's sad. it's sad. and especially this time of year, not that it's ever a good time of year but just this time of year is so sad. >> reporter: the carbon monoxide level was so high in this house, that the first three officers who arrived on the scene were inside for just a short time and then they had to go to the hospital. >> the carbon monoxide level is close to four parts per million. the threshold we are -- 400 parts per million.

the threshold we are concerned with is 10 parts per mill. >> reporter: a gas fueled furnace was most likely the source of the gas. one neighbor is prepared. >> i have three detectors so i'm kind of -- i guess that keeps me aware to help, you know, anything happens here because a lot of things that i have run off of gas. >> we want to remind people particularly this time of year when they are beginning to fire up their heating, when people are using other types of portable heaters to make sure that things are operated in a well ventilated space. >> reporter: neighbors say that a family owns the house and was boarding construction workers and the men who died were two of those workers. reporting from shock trauma, kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning start with dizziness and headaches, getting out of the house is the best way to avoid league al -- lethal exposure. new at 11:00, a truck driver rushed to the hospital after a haz-mat scare in annapolis. the driver noticed the leak coming from his truck on u.s.

50 near interstate 97. he pulled off on the side of the road and taken to the hospital. traffic was so bad our photographer couldn't even get close to the scene. the road reopened late tonight. fire department tells us the truck was leaking a chemical that makes products fire resistant. if you were outside at all, you probably felt that raw rainy weather. the rain falling just about all day long across the area. taking a live look outside right now, just not -- well, it is pretty out there with those lights. but it has been so damp and now that wet weather could make for a messy morning commute. meteorologist bernadette woods is in the first warning weather center with a look at what's coming our way overnight. >> we are going to start out with first warning doppler radar and you can see most of the rain getting out of here but here's how it looked most of the day, heavy amounts of rain coming up from the south and all of this was in the form of rain. the cold air was really locked up to western maryland, extreme western maryland and points northwest of that but what's

going on right now, the winds have turned around to the northwest because the cold front has cleared us, temperatures are starting to drop but still 41 degrees, though, in baltimore but take a look out west, 21 in oakland, 32 in cumberland. the cold air going to come, overspread the state from the city north and west tonight and that means anything that doesn't dry up could freeze during the overnight hours so a concern for ice in the morning. the other thing too, winter storm warnings in effect for western maryland through tomorrow morning because what was rain is now changing into snow. we are going to have that forecast coming up. mary. >> thank you. amazing video you have to see to believe. the roof caves in on a football stadium in the middle of a blizzard. ines reports for wjz and shows us the damage left behind. >> reporter: snow ripped through the inflatable roof of the minnesota vikings stadium early sunday. and crashed onto the field. the roof couldn't hold the weight of 17 be inches of snow

that fell on minneapolis. workers spent the day clearing the roof but the cleanup will likely take days. the nfl was forced to move the vikings-giants game to monday night in another city, detroit. further east in chicago teams cleared their field before the bears-patriots game. >> this is bear weather so we are prepared. >> reporter: the blizzard blanketed the upper midwest. >> the arctic hound is howling and bite as bad as its bark out there. you can see the snow swirling around here. >> reporter: firefighters rushing to put out this fire in minneapolis got stuck in snow near the home. they arrived in time to rescue six people but two others did not survive. officials in parts of wisconsin urged drivers to stay home since even snow plows couldn't keep the roads clear. >> when the snow is coming down heavy, you make a round and it's like i just did it and you start over and oh, i just did this one last time. >> reporter: the storm is heading east, but much of the snow is expected to turn into rain as it moves across the

country. ines for wjz eyewitness news. >> the storm also delayed or cancelled almost 1500 flights just in chicago. airports across the midwest are predicting even more delays and cancellations tomorrow. new tonight, a baltimore inmate is back behind bars after he escaped from jail. police found kevin talley at a restaurant in philadelphia. state police tell us talley attacked a prison officer last night and then managed to run away. he was originally behind bars on attempted murder charges. he will be brought back to baltimore where he's going to be even in more trouble. baltimore city firefighters trying to figure out what sparked a big fire at a storage warehouse. the 3-alarm fire broke out this morning at the self-storage building on russell street. it is just a few blocks away from m&t bank stadium, no one hurt in the fire. more than 100 dogs are pulled from a burning home in calvert county. 50 firefighters helped in the rescue. despite that effort, several

dogs died. >> flames consumed the home of a dog breeder and kennel on neptune drive in huntington calvert county. trapped inside, more than be 100 dogs. >> i was quite concerned because for the longest time i didn't hear any dogs at all barking and i thought maybe they had been overcome by smoke. >> reporter: firefighters worked nonstop to pull dog after dog from the flames. >> firefighters made entry and made a quick knockdown on the fire in about five minutes, rescued over 100 animals. >> reporter: four dogs died in -- died in the fire. the surviving dogs were put in warm cars as the owners searched for temporary homes. >> we breed and show dogs and also rescue dogs. the american kennel club was here on thursday and inspected us and everything was fine. we could have not woke up and then there would have been no one to take care of the dogs. >> firefighters are investigating what started that fire. baltimore city police are looking for a killer tonight.

a woman was shot to death early this morning in the 1300 block of north franklin town road. police tell us the woman was shot once in the chest and she died at the hospital. detectives don't have any suspects yet. an early morning house party ends with three people stabbed in edgewater. anne arundel county police tell us a fight erupted at the party and spilled out onto salisbury road. four people facing drug charges tonight now baltimore city police are trying to figure out if they are connected to a dogfighting ring too. police arrested them yesterday during a raid at a home on edgemont avenue. police say the four had cocaine and lots of cash in the house. when officers went inside, they also found six pitbulls and other tools to train the dogs how to fight. it is back to court tomorrow for the man accused of plotting to blow up a military recruiting center in indicate tonsville -- to
