wicked weather. a powerful blizzard pounds the midwest causing at least four deaths and punching a hole in the roof of the minneapolis metrodome. thousands of travelers are grounded and the storm is now heading east. we'll bring you the very latest. tax cut test. the senate takes a first vote on the controversial compromise carved out by president obama and republicans. but will democrats step in and sink the deal? we'll go live to capitol hill. and cruise ship nightmare. a royal caribbean ship with nearly 1,000 americans aboard is limping into port this morning after being battered by high winds and heavy seas, making it

giants is actually been moved to detroit. we'll have more on that in just a little bit. >> lucky that didn't happen during game time. can you imagine? >> not a good thing. the latest ahead on the elizabeth smart case. ed smart, her father, is with us. they were in court on friday as brian david was convicted. it's a miserable morning across much of the country. flooding in the northwest. driving rain in the northeast and worst of all, a blizzard in the midwest being blamed for at least four deaths. we've got team coverage of this stormy weather beginning with cbs news national correspondent dean reynolds in south bend, indiana. dean, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, harry. well, the calendar may not say it yet but for the people of the midwest, believe me, today it's winter. as you can see, it's a very good idea to stay indoors. and not just because of the

snow. 15-per-hour winds are adding to the problems. some that did venture outside paid a price. while many who hoped to get away from it all were frustrated. >> not might get out of here until tuesday. >> reporter: more than a thousand flights canceled at o'hare and midway airports. the airlines started passing out tooth paste and brushes with their tickets. with close to two feet of snow burying wisconsin, the governor's declaration of an emergency was almost an anti-climax. >> what we plow, drifts in five minutes later. >> reporter: everyone was urged to stay off the roads and some of the roads were closed to be on the safe side. >> stay home. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: chicago put 174 plows on the pavement and while tailgaters exalted in the elements. >> doesn't matter, doesn't

matter. >> reporter: whiteout conditions. after the bears lost in new england, their enthusiasm probably cooled off with the thermometer. and speaking of temperatures, they are of the single digit variety now and could stay that way well into this afternoon. of course, michigan and ohio can see all of this coming their way now along with the ingredients for more lake-effect snow. and if so, then south bend, indiana, where i am very near lake michigan will get hit again. harry, i'll try not to take it personally. >> sorry about that, dean. dean reynolds, thanks so much from south bend, indiana. the people of minnesota accustomed to cold weather and plenty of snow but even they were unprepared for the size and power of the blizzard that hit over the weekend. liz come lynn of our minneapolis station wcoo-tv is there with the latest. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, harry. some describe it as the mother of all storms. either way, though, here everyone agrees it's been a long, long time since a winter storm this powerful hit the twin cities. a monster snowstorm shocked minneapolis dumping 17 inches of snow in 18 hours. bringing white out conditions, closing roads and creating snow drifts five feet high. at one point, closed a 150-plus mile stretch of interstate 90. it was the fifth biggest snow fall in the city's history. captured this video, the metrodome's massive inflatable roof caved in and burst open. pouring snow on to the field. no one was injured. >> we had three roof panels rupture providing for deflation of the roof. >> reporter: the collapse canceled sunday's game against the giants because they were unable to get there because the

minneapolis airport was shut down for the first time in 19 years. the game will be played on monday in detroit. with temperatures hovering in the single digits, residents are trying to keep up with one of the biggest blizzards in history. >> i've been shoveling almost every hour on the hour. oh. >> reporter: the last time the dome deflated due to snow was in 1983. back then, it took four days to fix. originally, we thought postponing the game is good news for quarterback brett favre but we learned this morning in an interview it says that it looks unlikely he'll play. he suffered a shoulder injury last week and, harry, likely ending his 297-consecutive nfl game starts streak. >> wow. liz, thank you very much. got to get it ready for monday night game next week. thank you very, very much. for the third time in five weeks, cruise ship passengers

are finding the dream vacation is a nightmare. this time, a royal caribbean ship with nearly 1,000 americans on board is lifring to port in the mediterranean sea after being damaged in a powerful storm. cbs news correspondent mark phillips is in london with the latest. >> reporter: this is the latest in the drama of seas. the cruise ship was in the mediterranean and caught in a ferocious winter storm, an unpleasant experience for the passengers, many of them american but luckily one they can still talk about. the storm pounded the eastern mediterranean with hurricane-force winds and 30-foot w5e6s. it was bad enough on land but devastating at sea. this is what happened to the royal caribbean cruise ship "brilliance of the seas" when it was caught in the storm. the ship rolled violently throwing furniture, passengers and the ship's christmas tree

around. it was a frightening experience for those on board. >> everything's just flying, flying off the bed, the beds are moving. the tables are all tumbling over the television fell out. water's everywhere because of ice buckets, everything justs flying and it goes about four times. >> reporter: the brilliance of the seas looked more brilliant in the publicity video. the 12-day cruise supposed to take it from spain to italy, greece and egypt. it's now trying to head back toward malta. it's been a bad month for cruising. the clelia ii was hit last week by a massive storm between south america and antarctica and had to limp back to port. and the carnival "splendor" stranded in the pacific off mexico when a fire in the engine room left the ship without power last month. luckily, nobody's been killed in any of these incidents, ship safety standards are pretty high these days but a cargo ship with 11 crew on board did sink off

the israeli coast this morning in the latest storm. the crew were also lucky. rescued after they took to the lifeboats. betty? >> that's mark phillips in london, thank you very much. earlier, i spoke with loraine brewer, a passenger on board "the brilliance of the seas" and she told me just how rough it got. >> between 2:15 and 2:30, i woke up because it was very rough and then we had got a little bit rougher and my glasses fell and i reached down to pick them up and a huge lifting of the ship flew across the cabin to the stateroom door and then when it lifted the other way, i flew across. my husband grabbed me and we slammed into the plate glass sliding door. this went back and forth for probably maybe five minutes or so. >> oh my gosh. >> we could see waves higher

than our seventh floor balcony. >> you could see waves -- >> i talked to someone yesterday -- yeah. and then i could see it at the tenth floor balcony, as well. >> you could see waves from the seventh. somebody said they saw them up to the tenth. >> and higher. >> you literally -- the ship listing from one side to the other and you were just literally just being tossed from one side of your stateroom to the other side of the stateroom? >> yes. panels flying. the bed was hitting the wall. we had totally turned around in the bed. anything that wasn't secured was all over. flying missiles. >> wow. are you okay? did you get hurt at all? >> well, i did a little banged up but i have seen people that i have seen that have like lacerations that they had fixed and like bruising. we haven't been told of any serious injuries but communication hasn't been the

a real charge into the economy. >> reporter: the white house is expressing optimism, even though the democratically controlled house refused to bring the measure up for a vote. and independent senator from vermont bernie sanders spent eight and a half hours railing against it. >> it's robin hood in reverse. >> reporter: behind closed doors, democrats that oppose provisions like a reduction in the estate tax rate get sweeteners. a tax credit for renewable energy and green jobs, tax relief for mass transit, a tax deduction for schoolteachers and tax benefits to landowners who set aside their property for conservation.

not all democrats are on board with the add-ones. >> we shouldn't add to the cost of the bill. it is already too big already. i mean, we're -- we were headed toward a $1.3 trillion deficit next year. add this on and we're up to a $1.75 trillion one-year deficit. >> reporter: but even the most vocal democratic critics now say they won't scuttle the deal. >> we will not hold it up at the end of the day. >> reporter: now, this will not be a party-line vote today. there will be republicans that vote against it thinking it's too expensive. democrats that vote against it because they don't like some of the tax cuts for the wealthy but in the end it should get the 60 votes it needs to move forward, whit. >> nancy cordes this morning, thank you. this morning, swedish officials believe they know the identity of a suicide bomber that struck downtown stockholm. it took place on saturday. police say they're 98% sure he

was a swedish citizen. he was also registered as the owner of a car that exploded just before the suicide blast. diplomat richard holbrooke received phone calls from the presidents of afghanistan and pakistan as he recovers from more surgery. president obama special envoy had a procedure yesterday followed an operation to repair an artery after he collapsed at the state department on friday. former alaska governor sarah palin spent the weekend in haiti for a firsthand look of conditions there. she visited a cholera treatment clinic yesterday. more than 2,000 people have died from cholera there. she says that americans should get out of their comfort zone and volunteer to help. palin also visited some of the victims of the january earthquake and she called for a military air lift to bring supplies that are still needed in haiti. mark madoff's death is officially a suicide. the body of the son of schemer bernard madoff found saturday. he hanged himself on the second

david mitchell sits behind bars awaiting sentence in may. he'll likely face a life sentence. elizabeth says she is relieved by the swift verdict. >> i hope that not only is this an example that justice can be served in america, but that it is possible to move on after something terrible has happened. i'm so thrilled with the verdict but not only that i'm so thrilled to stand before the people of america today and give hope to other victims who have not spoken out about what's happened to them. >> doesn't she glow? today's such a wonderful day. >> reporter: the month-long trial was a gut-wrenching ordeal. mitchell kicked out of court for loudly singing religious prayers. elizabeth and family members had to listen as the nooif months of captivity were retold. >> there is a way to put the people behind us and that we can move forward with our lives. >> reporter: at times, the trial was too much to bear. elizabeth stormed out of court

early this month in the defense team's testimony. and she had to relive the abduction on the stand which she did with stoic bravery. >> i think the hardest part of coming in here is worrying about elizabeth having to testify and as a father i was so grateful for her to be able to say what she had to say and put that behind her. >> reporter: elizabeth will travel to france to complete a mormon church mission and then return to college in utah for a music degree. her message now is one of vindicati vindication. >> we can speak out and we'll be heard. >> mitchell's defense attorneys did not decide whether to appeal. his sentencing is set for may 25th. harry? >> whit, thank you. joining us now is elizabeth's father, it smart. ed, good morning. >> good morning. >> want to go back to the last couple of weeks and what it was like for you and louis and the rest of your family. sitting in that courtroom and

hearing what your daughter had to say because she had to testify in some detail about what she had to endure at the hands of this horrible man. what was that like for you all? >> you know, i think that prior to her testimony, she had been brought in by the prosecutors to, you know, go over things and she called me one night, one day and she said, dad, you know, what i'm having to say is so much more than what i've ever said before. and -- >> what she had prior told you? >> what she had ever told me. we knew that it was horrible but to hear it in court it was, you know, it was outrageous but she, you know, i don't know how she had the dignity, the grace to be able to say it in the manner that she said, but the thing that was so important was there had to be absolutely no question that brian mitchell was what he was.

>> i think everybody was terribly impressed by her poise, my her composure, by her maturity. does it feel now, there's still a sentencing phase to come and i know she wants to face him in court. >> absolutely. >> does it feel like this journey is coming to its maybe perhaps logical end? >> it really did. i mean, when we went in on friday and heard that he was guilty on both counts, it was just kind of like, this is what we've been waiting for for eight years. and justice took a long time. the prosecutors were amazing and we're so grateful. you know, when elizabeth came home, we wanted her to know that this was not her fault. >> right. >> and i think so many victims get somehow brought into feeling like they have some ownership in what's happened to hem. >> some responsibility. >> absolutely. and i think that was one thing that elizabeth has absolutely

come, you know, this was not her fault. it was brian mitchell. and in facing him in court, in telling the jury and telling everyone made the statement, i mean, when she got up and walked out during the nine months she -- she was basically held captive and she did not have the opportunity of getting away. and the times she did, she was brought back and she might as well have been handcuffed with the thoughts that brian somehow could get at the family or would kill her. >> sure, sure. ed, we thank you very much for your time this morning. >> thanks so much, harry. >> time now for a check of the weather. let's take an early look

shoppers have already made it through black friday and cyber monday but it doesn't stop there. today is green monday. one of the biggest online shopping days of the year and the busiest for the people who ship all of those purchases. early show consumer correspondent susan coppen has much more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, betty. >> how did the term come about? >> reporter: so green monday is one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. traditionally, it is the second monday in december.

it's basically the trigger day. the day that most shoppers realize, you know what? i better do my christmas shopping today to make sure that those packages get there on time for christmas. $1 billion, that's what we expect consumers to spend today alone, betty. >> my goodness. okay. so if everyone is shopping today online, i assume it's one of the busiest days for people like the place where you're at, those shippers there trying to get the boxes an gift it is people on time for christmas. >> reporter: right. so fed-ex says that this is the busiest shipping day for them. as you can imagine, a monster day for retailers. it is a monster day for shippers, as well. put it into perspective. fed-ex says it will handle 16 million packages today alone. that's a 12% increase over last year, betty. >> and i also understand coming this friday it's going to be free shipping day. we all love the term free.

are all retailers participating in that? >> reporter: no. not all retailers. this is something that started a few years ago. every december 17th is now called free shipping day. there are about a thousand retailers that are taking part this year. you can go to freeshippingday.com to find a list of those retailers but if you're going to use free shipping day, read the fine print. sometimes there's something in place like you have to spend $75 or more to get free shipping. so it doesn't necessarily mean that you buy a $2 item you get free shipping for it. read the fine print. >> absolutely. sometimes there's a catch. but you know, a lot of people really focus right now on making sure that they get that gift there not only on time but in one piece. what are the deadlines and the dos and don'ts? >> reporter: so the deadlines, two thirds of retailers saying that standard shipping will expire on or before december 18th.

deaths. dr. jennifer ashton, who's an ob/gyn is here for us. good morning. >> good morning, betty. >> according to a study, the annual screenings reduce deaths by 11%. why so low? >> exactly. being called by the american cancer society only a modest reduction in risk from dying of ovarian cancer. the reason, betty, they are not accepted screening tests per se. they're all we have and talking about here specifically is a physician exam, a pelvic exam, a pelvic ultrasound and then a blood test known as a c-1-25. not 100% accurate. they can give you a normal result when there's cancer there. it's important to remember, betty, i say this to a lot of my patients, with that blood test, there are about six other blood test markers that women should get and ask their doctors for if

there is a suspicion for ovarian cancer. most doctors even are not aware of those other markers so they should ask for them. >> the key really is to finding it and detecting it but it's difficult to detect. correct? >> exactly. the reason for that is because of where the ovaries sit in the pelvis presenting with very, very vague and common symptoms. a lot of them can be missed by not just the patient or misinterpreted by the doctor so the big ones we think about with warning signs or symptoms of cancer, pelvic pain and pressure is the biggest one, indigestion or a change in the way you eat. take a bite and then push it away saying you feel full, stomach swelling or burping and changes in urinary habits. frequency or an urgency to urinate more often. if you have the symptoms more than two weeks talk to your doctor and ask to be examined by a gynecologist. >> how do you know if you're at risk? >> generally the risk of ovarian cancer of all women is 1 in 70.
