hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what we're talking b. >> the bitter chill around the region. wjz was in northeast baltimore. where we found this construction crew. every exposed part of their body is covered. and fuhad to gout-- if you had to go out and do a quick errand, if it feels cold to you now, get ready, you're going to shiver even more as the day moves on. how cold will it get today? meteorologist bernadette woods is updating wind chills and temperatures. >> reporter: well, the high on the day is a little misleading because it happened closer to midnight. temperatures have been falling this afternoon. and the cold air is about to arrive. we have reestablished that connection with the lakes. and there's going to be bands of snow out west, and it's so

strong, the snow showers and flurries are making their way east of the mountains. this is where we're seeing some of the bands now, all west and south of the city. and these bands will continue to come in a few different waves, straight through the next few days. because of what's going on, winter storm warning in effect for extreme western parts of the state. wind gusts over 40 miles per hour. and look at the cold air now. 29 in baltimore. 10 in oakland. and when you factor in that wind, it feels like it's in the teens outside. and minus 9 in oakland. cold air is here. it's going to stick around. we'll have your forecast coming up. >> and while we're just dealing with bone-chilling temperatures. other parts of the midwest are dealing with a powerful winter storm. as manuel gallegus reports for wjz, almost two feet of snow fell in some areas. >> reporter: it feels like minus 24 degrees for people digging out in minneapolis. the arctic blast comes on the

heels of a monster storm that dumped almost two feet of snow in parts of wisconsin and minnesota. all of this snow, driven by 50-mile-per-hour winds, made driving treacherous, forcing hundreds of vehicles off the road. in northwest indiana, police are searching for motorists trapped in their cars. airports across the midwest are trying to get back on track after a week of misery. minneapolis closed its airport for the first time in 19 years. and in chicago o'hare, more than 1,000 flights were canceled. >> i might not get out of here until tuesday. >> reporter: in the pacific northwest, mudslides from record rainfalls sent this house sliding down the hill. three people had to be rescued, including a 94-year-old woman. >> she was hysterical. she didn't know what was going on. >> more rain is expected in michigan, indiana and points east. but football fans won't care. they'll be watching tonight's

game between the new york giants and the minnesota vikings, indoors in detroit. the giants headed to michigan after their flight was diverted to kansas city. sunday's game was postponed and moved to detroit, after the metro dome roof caved in from the weight of the snow. it was the fifth biggest snowfall in the twin cities history. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. and shivering fans, braving 12-degree temperatures, lined up hours before free tickets became available for giants- vikings game in detroit. for updated forecast on any school closings or delays, go to wjz.com. tragedy and heartbreak, in a pikesville community today, nearly a dozen people are still recovering after a carbon monoxide leak. alex demetrick reports, two people did not make it out alive. >> reporter: besides the fatalities, two adults and eight children were rushed here

to shock trauma, following carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: two men found dead on the road were part of a construction crew that worked and lived with the couple in the house. a 911 call brought police, but they -- >> were quickly overcome by some type of unknown stance. >> at first, i thought maybe it was a gas leak. because i knew it wouldn't be a fire because i couldn't smell anything. >> carbon monautomobile monoxide levels, close to 400 parts per million. president threshold we're concern -- the threshold we're concerned with mostly is the 10 parts per million. >> i'm going to have three detectors. so i guess that keeps me aware to help if anything happens

here. because a lot of things that i have run off of gas. >> and it's gas appliances that frequently cause carbon monoxide poisoning. the only good news out of this fatal incident is that all 10 people brought to shock trauma have been released. >> according to the baltimore county fire department, tracing the cause of the leak and fixing it is up to the property owner. there were no carbon monoxide alarms inside that house. catonsville bomb plot. the case was back in court just a few hours ago. denise is live with an update on the antonio martinez case. >> reporter: the 21-year-old is accused of plotting to blow up the military recruitment center. he is a recent convert to islam. and court documents describe him as obsessed with jihad. he was arrested during a sting operation, during which the fbi says he tried to detonate a phony car bomb.

during the hearing, martinez' defense attorney questioned the government's tactics, calling it entrapment. >> prosecutors outline some of martinez's alleged confession. wjz will have more on that and the reaction from the suspect's mother coming up live at 5:00. another record fall at bwi thurgood marshall. the airport announced nearly 2 million passengers passed through in october. this october was the 6th straight monthly record for passenger traffic at bwi marshall, including july, the busiest month in the history of the airport. how busy are the roads now. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. we are off to a pretty busy start out there. northbound 95. we have a vehicle fire to watch out at keith avenue. that's attracting plenty of attention. brake lights from whitemarsh to the beltway on the northeast side. on the beltway, north side

concussions in the nfl. new numbers suggest that players and players and teens are taking head injuries more seriously. according to nfl data, 154 concussions have been reported since the start of the preseason this year. that's up more than 30% since 2008. doctors say these numbers reflect a change in the way head jurisdiction are being handled on and off the field. >> and good news for parents who want to keep their kids away from sugary cereals. researchers study cereal preferences in 91 school-aged children. kids who were given low sugar cereals choose to add more

christoforous. twitter is just released their top trends of 2010. the social media site's cofounder, bidstone, sat down with cnet.com's natalie morris, to tell us what the world has been tweeting. >> reporter: the gulf oil spill, fifa world cup, and the movie "inception," were the top trending topics on twitter this year, followed by the haitian earthquake; on monday, twitter released its top trends of 2010. they do this every year. and the results are always surprising. >> one of the things that strike mease about the overall trends, when you look at these things, like the world cup. obviously that's going to trend. it highlights that twitter can make the world seem that much smaller. >> reporter: the question is, how much do these twitter trends reflect what america or the rest of the world is thinking? >> reporter: according to a study, only 8% of americans who are online use twitter. yet the number of people who

some sunshine out there. >> yeah, it helped a little out there. just a touch. >> yes, we have not seen that much today. but a few times it peeked out. from occasion to occasion. we're still seeing this, too. rounds of snow showers and flurries. and not a whole lot. but enough that we're going to have to talk about it. because this is going to continue for the next two days. just these bands of snow showers and flurries that continue to make their way east of the mountains because the lake-effect event that has set up is so strong that it's not just dying out west of the mountains. it's making its way east of the mountains. and that's about. we're going to be in for two days now. we'll take you back.

early this morning, light snow making its way through. that got off to the east. then you notice things start shifting around coming to the west. that's because one part of the storm is now gone. the second part is coming in. and that is the gusty winds bringing in snow showers and cold air. with the second part of the storm, we have winter storm warnings that have been extended for garrett and allegheny counties. also, a wind advisory in effect for winds gusting over 41 miles per hour. especially in some of the pass areas. so we have winds now, sustaining 23 miles per hour in hagerstown. 17 in hagerstown. and this is the cold air that has brought in, 29 in baltimore this afternoon. 34 down to the ocean. and 10 degrees in oakland. and when you factor in the wind, it feels like minus 8 for the central part of the state, it feels like in the teens and 20s, all the way down to the ocean. there's really cold air out there. and this is just part of it. take a look at all of these really deep colors coming in.

they got to minus 33 now. and also, even though it's going to moderate the farther south it goes, it could go closer to freezing tonight in miami, in southern florida. this is the cold air moving our way. and it's going to set up shop for a couple of days here. in addition to those continuation of snow showers and flurries. so here's the pattern. we put it in motion. not much changed. similar to early last week. but by wednesday afternoon, this high will start to come our way. so we'll shut off the winds temporarily. the cold air will continue. and a new storm comes our way thursday. there will be a fast mover. much weaker chance. out on the waters. tonight, windy and cold. scattered snow showers. down to 22 degrees. tomorrow, same idea. windy and cold. scattered snow showers. high of about 30 degrees. wind chills are going to feel like the teens most of the afternoon tomorrow.

29 degrees and partly cloudy. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. vic is off cold front. a nightmare. an intruder held a teacher and students hostage for hours. charlie d'agata has more on the dramatic rescue. >> reporter: french s.w.a.t. teams grabbed shields to take down a teenager who used swords to take young children hostage. he burst into a preschool in eastern france just after it opened. he initially took a teacher and about 20 young children hostage. they were 3 to 6 years old. the suspect released most of them over the course of the morning. parents say the teacher tried to keep the kids calm. >> this mother says the teacher told the children to run outside, saying it was a game. >> but the teen intruder kept

hold of them for five hours. police say the suspect suffered from depression, and family members say he had stopped taking medication. at one point, he had reportedly asked officers for a gun to commit suicide. the drama ended after officers slipped inside this school and overpowered the teenager. the teacher he held captive says the teen was gentle with the children, even letting them use the bathroom. charlie daggad -- charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the french education minister says the children and families will receive counseling. virginia police detective talk for the first time with a 12-year-old virginia girl and the man who allegedly kidnapped her. kai is in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: police are in san francisco, interviewing britani smith and her kidnapper, scott easley. they believe the two lived behind shrubs and trees near the beach for the past week and

panhandled outside a supermarket. easley is also the suspect in the death of the young gerl's mother, who was -- girl's mother who was found dead last week. family members say that the mother and easley were romantically involved, that he had moved into the home with them in october. >> investigators will not say whether smith went willingly with easley. minnesotans are prepared for cold snow, but each they weren't prepare -- even they weren't prepared for the magnitude. >> reporter: a monstore snowstorm shocked minneapolis. bringing whiteout conditions, closing snow. and snow drifts. at one point, it closed a 150- mile stretch. it was the biggest in history. workers tried to get two.

but captured here, the sport stadium's massive caved in and burst open. forcing snow on the field. no one was injured. >> we had three roof panels rupture. provide for the roof. >> they conscienceled against the new york giants who were unable to get there anyway. because the minneapolis airport was shut down. the came will now be in new york. minnesotans are trying to keep up with the biggest in history. >> i've been shoveling, almost every hour. >> poor guy. no snow for us. just the cold. if you consider our weather, we have been

while many democrats have criticized the deal, more and more are saying they will now vote for it. >> senate leaders started casting their first votes on the controversial tax cut deal that has divided the president's party. >> permanently extending tax cut to the richest americans, weave cost our economy, $700 billion over seven years. that's too great for a budget already burdened by deficit and debt. >> reporter: this was only a test vote. but a plan to pass it to the senate later this week. then it moves to the house, where democrats oppose the idea of extending it to those who have given in to their threat to block the deal. >> i think we're going to have a vote on that in the senate bill. and with possible changes. >> reporter: liberals want to toughen up the to tax rate on inheritances. they say wealthy estates should have to pay more. >> reporter: but republicans warn that any big changes they rammer out with the president, could unravel the compromise. they want the plan to stay as

is. >> it nerve made sense to take it over to job creators. >> the white house is upping the deal to get it done. >> on behalf of millions of americans who won't see their taxes go up. >> reporter: both hope to be done with the deal by the end of this week. but with things the way they are, lawmakers aren't likely to go home until a deal is worked out. a pair of polls show the majority of americans agree with the deal. president obama signed a 4 and a half billion deal today at a washington school.

west/northwest to seven. barometer. 29.4 inches. we still have wind advisories. up across western maryland. and a winter storm warning for those folks in western allegheny county. 4 to 8 inches of snow. likely, this is all lake-effect snow. 4:29 now. the actual temperature in oakland is only 9 above zero. 21 in cumberland. 30 in d.c. and 34, the warm spot in ocean city. winds, 17, 20. 18 out of pax river. 20 in oakland. remember, the temperatures there in the single digits. and the wind chill is 8 for those. and 23 in ocean city. this evening, generally across much of central maryland. our wind chill is between 10 and 15 degrees. to be heading out, that's what you want to dress for. the storm gave us all the rain. temperatures in the low 50s yesterday. we were in the warm side of the storm.

that sustained. eastern main, -- maine. and snow showers across southern. more lake-effect snow. really going to get by. still seeing the extremists. and here in the baltimore area. we could see a few stray flakes maybe. windy and cold. actually, probably up through wednesday. and the chances of flurries, pretty slim. but east of the mountains, maybe a 10 to 20% chance. garrett county, guaranteed they'll see moderate to heavy snow. west winds. and a gale warning on the bay. tonight, then, maybe a scattered flurry, down around 20. i think we'll get to maybe 16 or 17. some suburbs with wind chills around 10. and high of 31 with scattered
