hello, everybody. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about tonight. just looking outside doesn't give you the real feeling for how cold it is. but you don't want to head out if you don't have to. arctic cold. temperatures are diving, as the frigid air is blowing into maryland. people are bundling up into layers trying to stay warm any way they can. have a look at a very frigid forecast. we've had a few stray flurries this region. garrett county. definitely will see some tonight. the heaviest stuff across pennsylvania. that's where they're seeing the real lake-effect snow. you can see it coming off the rains. approaching far western maryland. might see one of these snow showers making it tonight. and again tomorrow, there's a slight chance.

because of the fact that the wind chills are down. and the snow continues in garrett county, we have advisories in effect. the winds continue to be a factor west of us. and that's why we have a wind advisory. and the winter storm warning continues through tomorrow night. through garrett, western allegheny county. and in pennsylvania. bernadette woods has a look at some of these temperatures and the way it really feels on your skin. bernadette? >> well, the cold air has returned. and in some cases, it's worst than last week's cold. here are the temperatures we're looking at across the state right now. and they are falling. 27 in baltimore. 20 for most of the map. just above freezing in ocean city. and the single digits in the mountains. when you factor in the winds that are sustained over 20 miles per hour, and gusting over 30. it feels like the teens for a lot of us. and even hagerstown has dropped down to 27 degrees. minus 9 in oakland. the cold air has arrived. it's going to stick around for a while. for now, we'll send it back

inside. when wintry weather hits, remember, wjz 13 is always on. for instant updates all the time, live doppler radar, and information on closings and delays, log onto wjz.com. staying behind bars. that's what a judge just decided about the man accused of trying to blow up a military recruiting center in catonsville. wjz is live at the federal courthouse. kelly mcpherson talks to the suspect's mother about the serious charges he's facing. kelly? >> reporter: denise, in the courtroom, we heard the defense claim that they believed that the government planted the idea of bombing a military recruitment center into the mind of martinez. and the prosecutors are arguing that they have evidence to prove that martinez had intention to kill with or without the fbi's help. in the end, the judge ruled that martinez is a danger to society. >> reporter: 21-year-old antonio martinez faces life in prison for attempting to blow up this catonsville military recruitment center. wjz was inside the federal courthouse.

and we're learning more about his possible defense. his lawyer is questioning the government's tactics. martinez was unknowingly working with an fbi informant. and an undercover agent, who according to the federal affidavit guided his bombing plans for the past two months. his public defender asked to know more about the informant, saying is the informant combing through mosques of baltimore to find sussentible young -- susceptible young men? he says his client was entrapped. >> our argument is as to whether or not mr. hussein should be detained. and whether or not pending trial he is going to be at liberty. you know the court made their decision. and it didn't go the way we wanted it. >> reporter: the defendant's mother was in the courtroom to support her son. she said only this. >> i know him. i'm the only person that knows him. he's not a terrorist. >> do you believe he's not guilty? >> i just believe it's entrapment. that's all i'm going to say.

>> you believe it's entrapment? >> yes. >> this hearing shows that martinez confessed. he said he went through with it because it was the "right cause" and his "duty to wage jihad." he also said he believed it could have been an fbi sting all along, until he smelled gas fumes last wednesday. they recorded conversations saying martinez told the informant at one point, to go ahead and press the button if i start running because of police. >> reporter: the identity of that informant was not revealed in court. but prosecutors say they have a notebook that they believe belongs to martinez. and inside, there are entries, dating back to the spring of 2009 when he wrote that he wanted to die for a cause. reporting from federal courthouse, kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you very much. kelly, the courts are using the name antonio martinez. has lawyer refers to him by his islamic name of muhammad hussein.

a popular deal in a high- profile case. >> well, kai, sources say a plea deal could be coming in the murder of cockeysville native yeardley love. george huguely is accused of killing his girlfriend. the couple had been in an on and off again relationship. huguely admitted slamming love's head into a wall during a fight. now, it looks like the prosecutors won't request the death penalty against hunguely. we should learn more next month when he is due in court. >> a first-degree murder sentence could last anywhere from 20 years to life in prison. tonight the search for answers and accountability, after a 6-year-old fell to his death from a school bus. there is critical new evidence under review. wjz investigates live in west baltimore with mike hellgren. he is at the private bus company that handles the route. mike? >> reporter: and denise that,

new evidence is a camera on board the bus. there is videotape of this entire incident. >> reporter: jeremy jennings was barely 6 years old. and this was the smile that always melted his mom's heart. but since his death when he pulled open a door, fell and slammed onto the pavement, his mom demands information. >> i will get some answers, answers that i really need. >> she admits her son was a handful and hyperactive. police say jeremy fought with another student and tried to get out the front of the bus before running to the back and opening it while it was moving. mom wants to know, what are the policies? were they followed? and who is accountable. she questions why her son wasn't in a harness he was supposed to wear. and why the bus driver didn't stop. >> if you can't handle a special needs child, you don't need that job.

>> reporter: baltimore city schools, ultimately in charge, hasn't issued much information, issuing a new that they will work with authorities. >> they know it's under investigation now. and we don't know anything, other than what's being reported. >> and i invite the other people of baltimore to pray for that family during this really difficult time. >> a contractor for the city, m.r. hopkins transportation, ran the bus, but isn't saying much to us. >> reporter: when wjz came here to their headquarters to ask them for their side of the story, they told us simply, no comment. >> reporter: a city school spokeswoman told wjz, two aides who were on board have been suspended during the investigation. >> suspension is not good enough for me at all. >> you want someone to be held accountable. >> right. someone is going to be held accountable. >> police say this is not a criminal investigation at this point but that could change. >> reporter: the bus operator has had a contract with city schools for more than 30 years.

a daring robbery. thieves grabbed the pharmacist this morning and threw him in the back of the truck. police say the thieves unloaded 80 crates of markets onto another truck. then they dropped off the delivery worker a few miles away away. >> this is an incredibly thought out robbery. the robbers in this case, we believe did have some prior knowledge of the packing list that was enclose closed in the truck. >> the worker was not hurt. baltimore police have contacted the fbi and dea to try to track down the stolen drugs. baltimore county police need your help to find a bank robber in cockeysville. take a look at this picture. police say this man robbed the columbia bank on york road this morning. he got away with cash before police arrived. if you recognize him, give baltimore county police a call. playing in primetime.

the silent killer. tonight, we're learning more about the two men killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. alex demetrick has more. >> police were the first to arrive yesterday morning at this house in pikesville, after a 911 call reported bodies. when they went inside -- >> they were quickly overcome. >> at first, i thought it was a fire. >> it killed two men here. >> carbon monoxide levels, close to 400 parts per million. the threshold that we're concerned with normally is 10 parts per million. >> three police officers and seven others in the home will rush to shock trauma. >> they said my aunt was closest to them to die.

now they said she's safe. >> we put them in. the hyper baric chamber. >> the men killed or identified by family members. both from guatemala. they worked construction and lived with the family that employed them. >> the men who died were rooming in the basement. and that's where. >> his body was found. >> the fire department says once bge turned off the gas, their official role ended. >> it is the private property owner's responsibility in a situation like this, to hire professionals to determine what the source of the problem was. >> until then, no one lives here. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> according to baltimore county fire department, tracing the cause of that carbon monoxide leak and fixing it is a responsibility of the

property owner. there were no carbon monoxide detectors inside the home. it is important to be fire smart. nearly 300 christmas-tree- related fires are reported every year. there are a few simple things you can do to protect yourself this holiday season. when you pick a tree, make sure you get one with fresh needles. >> once you bring a tree into the house, it will dry out significantly faster than it would if being outside. make sure the trunks of the tree are cut. and that they are maintained and watered daily. one-third of all christmas tree fires are caused by electrical fires. so don't forget to turn off your christmas lights when you leave the house. you don't want your tree looking like this one. only 11 days before christmas. but today is a business day for workers. shipping presents around the country. wjz is live at the main post office downtown. pat warren has advice to make the holiday shipping easy.

23 to pax river with higher gusts. and with the temperature and the wind, here's the way it feels. feels like 13 degrees out there. so that's what you should dress for heading out. 6, the way it feels in hagerstown. and 9 below zero is the wind chill currently in oakland. down to our south in the midteens. a little warmer. 20 in ocean city is the way it feels. the big rain storm that gave us over an inch of rain. still causing heavy rain in maine, which is a little unusual. and even in boston, they're getting rain. winds are coming off the ocean. it's warm. on the other side of the storm, the winds are out of the north. that's where they had all of this in minnesota, wis wiss and the great lakes. the storm passed west of our region. but south that was area. up to 24 inches of snow it was the fifth biggest storm in minneapolis, by the way. for our region. this area over portions of idaho may get close enough to our region on thursday to give us a little bit of snow.

maybe a rain-snow mixture across portions of the region. right now, looks like it may head a little further south. and right now, just more of the cold and windy conditions. and wind chills once again, tonight into tomorrow will be in the teens. tonight, generally upper to lower teens. windy and cold side tonight through probably wednesday. west winds on the bay. and a gale warning through tomorrow night. bay temp. maybe a massing flurry. low around 20. otherwise, cloudy to partly cloudy. you could still see a few scattered flurries. it's possible one or two might produce a light dusting east of the mountains. 8 or 10 inches. that's all lake-effect snow. >> i am glad i live far away from that lake. stranded by the snow.

it's 6:29. 26 degrees and partly cloudy. in central maryland. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the midwest is getting hit hard by the winter weather. manuel gallegus reports for wjz. people are looking to dig out, now facing new challenges. feels like minus 24 degrees for people digging out in minneapolis. the arctic blast comes on the heels of a monster storm that dumped almost two feet of snow in -- snow in parts of minnesota and wisconsin. all of this snow driven by 50- mile-per-hour winds, made driving treacherous, forcing hundreds of vehicles off the road. in northwest indiana, police are searching for motorists

trapped in their cars. at least six weather-related deaths are reported across the country. >> airports are trying to get back on track after a weekend of misery. minneapolis closed its airport for the first time in 20 years. and in chicago's o'hair, more flights were canceled. >> i might not get here until tuesday. >> record rainfall sent this house sliding down a hill. three people had to be rescued, including a 94-year-old woman. >> she was hysterical. not quite sure what was going on football fans won't care. they'll be watching tonight's game between the new york giants and the minnesota vikings, indoors, in detroit. the giants headed to michigan after their flight was diverted to kansas city. sunday's game was postponed and moved to detroit after the metro dome roof in minneapolis caved in from the weight of snow. it was the fifth biggest snowfall in the twin cities'

history. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. here's good news. tickets to the game in detroit are free. too bad i have to work tonight. but the nfl stopped giving them away after so many people showed up to claim them. feels cold enough to snow here in baltimore. meteorologist bernadette woods has more. not much moisture left over from that storm. we're going to show you first warning doppler radar. because large lake-effect event has kicked in. you can see all downwind from the lakes. all of that snow coming off. and it is a strong enough event that we are occasionally getting flurries down to the city. another thing going on with this pattern right now, look at all of that cold air we are below zero in the bright colors in minnesota. it was minus 33 in minnesota. and temperatures going all the way to south florida, miami might hit freezing. so there's news for you, too.

>> the state tax would allow up to $10 million to pass to heirs without being taxed. if it does not pass by january 1st, all americans will see an increase there their taxes. >> two national poles -- polls released show the majority of americans support the tax plan as it stands. charlie d'agata reports, the young children and their teacher were held hostage for several hours. >> reporter: french s.w.a.t. teams grabbed shields to take down a teenager who used swords to take young children hostage. the school siege began when the 17-year-old burst into a preschool in eastern france, just after it opened. he initially took a teacher and about 20 young children hostage. they were 3 to 6 years old. the suspect released most of them over the course of the morning. parents say the teacher tried to keep the kids calm. this mother says the teacher told the children to run outside, saying it was a game.

baltimore city police have a few tool to fight crime. but it's probably not what you're thinking of. as mary bubala reports, it's better fitness for baltimore's finest. keeping physically fit is an essential component of policing. the police chief and mayor unveiled the new weinberg gym. >> we were able to put together used equipment. and now they have state of the art equipment in a beautiful facility. >> reporter: several hundred police officers and fire cadets will train in the new gym. they'll focus on physical fitness, specialized martial arts training. all to prepare them for threats they face every day. >> the building can't be just about lifting weights or getting on the treadmill. they have to be inculcated with
