wrong place, wrong time. two people watching an illegal drag race are struck and killed. >> a judge prepares to rule on the fate of the man behind the wheel. >> hello again, i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica kartalija >> here's what people are talking about. the young man on trial for killing two people watching a street race where i-70 ends in woodlawn. a judge is expected to decide the drivers guilt or innocence sometime today. mike hellgren live outside the baltimore county courthouse in towson. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. the defendant, danelle rayburn still wears the scars of the doesn't. he has scars from one end of his head to the other.

he took the stand this morning. he said he had no recollection of the incident that killed two people. the deadly scene unfolded near the park & ride on i-70 june 21, 2009. prosecutors say 27-year-old danelle rayburn was driving this chevy impala which slammed into a crowd watching a illegal drag race. mary katherine abernathy died and so did her friend, jonathan henderson. a judge will decide his i fate. prosecutors say he was drunk more than twice the legal limit. one witness testified rayburn tried to avoid the crowd. several others injured and police since cracked down on racing in that area. now, the prosecution is wrapping up their closing arguments. the defense will have closing arguments. then the judge will make a decision. prosecutors said this morning

in court according to the impala's air bag sensor it was speeding up as it went into the crowd of people. reporting live in circuit court in towson, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. maryland lawmakers continue to push for tougher penalties for those involved in illegal racing. a brutal attack leaves an elderly woman hospitalized. police say the attacker is her own grandson. mary bubala with more. >> reporter: about an hour ago wjz learned that 14-year-old hasani garrett is being charged as an adult for attacking his grandmother with a hammer. it happened thursday morning in the 800 block of east 34th street in waverley. investigators say garrett struck the 66-year-old woman several times with the hammer while she was sleeping. police say he was angry about the way she treated him. after the attack he called 911. the woman is now listed in critical condition. detectives say garrett admitted to the crime. back to you. >> thank you. 14 is the minimum age that someone can be charged as an

adult in maryland. a university of maryland college park student killed in his off-campus home, now two men face murder charges. police say 23-year-old deandre williams and 23-year-old stephan weaver killed justin bishop over cash in january. both suspects are charged with first degree murder. another midshipman expelled from the naval academy as part of an ongoing crackdown on the use of the synthetic marijuana known as spice. an academy spokesperson says the sophomore was expelled on monday bringing the total number to 12. though spice has been banned from the location it's still available on-line and in some convenience stores. signs of progress in the job market. the unemployment report was released a short time ago. shows americans are slowly getting back to work. alison harmelin reports for wjz from wall street.

>> reporter: betty left her job in the financial industry to raise her four children. a decade later she was ready to get back in but couldn't even get an interview. >> it was very, very difficult, and not a happy moment. even if i'm a usually positive person, i felt it's not going to happen. >> reporter: after job hunting for more than a year she found work at a major bank. at last the tide may be turning in the labor market. the unemployment rate dropped to a two-year low of 8.8% in march and companies are hiring at the fastest pace sense the recession began. adding 216,000 jobs last month. the better trepid in the labor -- trend in the labor market is welcome news on wall street but economists know there's still a long way to go, over 13 million earns are still -- americans are still looking for work. the line in new york went around the block at this job fair. the competition is still fierce but job hunters say they are finally seeing more openings.

>> i'm excited. i know something is going to come to me, most definitely. >> reporter: the march job report showed gains in manufacturing as well as health and education. but there was a drop in government jobs. the long term unemployed still struggling. more than six million people have been out of work for six months or longer. alison harmelin for cbs news, wall street. >> economists predict employers will continue to add jobs for the rest of this year but it still won't make up for the millions of layoffs since the start of the recession. this has been a weird weather day. locations to the north and west got a coating of snow on lawns and bushes and parked vehicles while the rest of us had rain. live look outside now, we all have clouds, a bit milder temperatures, too. wjz has coverage for you. marty bass in the outback. and meteorologist tim williams in the weather center. >> good afternoon. it definitely has been a weird day to say the least.

showers moved through. don gave you you a synopsis of this morning. one school system, carroll county delayed its open because of snow. on first warning doppler weather radar, everything you see is not in the form of all rain. we've had the colder temperatures in the early morning hours and some of these light showers moving through now are just that, but if you look at the satellite and radar, we've had colder air move through, that has been mixed with light snow showers as it moved through this early morning. that system is well up to the northeast now, at least the brunt of it and they are really seeing problems in new england. right now we're seeing temperatures around 45 degrees in central maryland. 30 the cold spot in oakland. the fluctuation is still happening, going out to marty bass. i guess this is almost like mother nature's way of saying april fool's? >> reporter: to be honest about it the sun just came out for a brief second. skies are trying to bust up. we know for a fact it's going to be a while before we get to a mixture of some clouds and clearing skies but the process

has begun. as has what is going to be a big warm-up moving our way. look at the national temperature map. i always say weather is where the air is coming from. you'll see a decided flow from the south and west. dallas 73, new orleans 72. already in the low 50s memphis and atlanta. miami 82. that's where the air is going to be coming from. look at this graphic. by early next week we're going to be in an envelope of not only warm but warm and humid air. so much so the forecast for opening day at camden yards has changed. how so? meteorologist tim williams will have the details coming up shortly. back inside. on that note spring training is over. real games begin for the orioles. the manager buck showalter. will play the first game in tampa. hoping to get to a fast start because expectations are higher this year. one analyst at the "new york post" predicts the orioles make the playoffs this year. that hasn't happened since

rebel leaders say they would agree to a ceasefire with moammar gadhafi but only under the right conditions. opposition leaders say gadhafi must pull his military forces out of cities and allow peaceful protests against his regime before they will stop fighting. this comes as well armed gadhafi troops gind ground

we've seen a bit of a change. temperatures right now, 45 at bwi marshall. 67% relative humidity with that west wind coming in at 14 miles an hour. 29.51 is the barometer. across the state temperatures are just around 30 degrees in oakland, 46 ocean city. 42 over toward hagerstown and that 45 down in the nation's capital. around the immediate metro area, mid-40s and we will be going up as soon as this west/southwesterly wind starts to take hold. as marty mentioned earlier, got a little peek of sun. that is the order of the day for the next few days. clouds are going to start breaking here. we'll start to see fewer and fewer showers. they will be a little more widely scattered through the weekend. low pressure system moving across the coastline. on up into the northeast. that's dumping some snow on them. it's also pulling some of that cold air up into the northeast. we're going to start to see drying out. high pressure will start building in, the warm air comes behind it so tomorrow we'll see maybe an early shower, then the

a job well done, blake. did you ever think you would be doing something like this? >> you know what? i didn't. this was never a part of the, you know, when i was 17 years old, the plan that i had. i never thought i would be standing up there, hosting an awards show but it's funny how, after 10 years of being a touring country music artist you kind of get to that spot where you go, man, what's next? i mean, what can i do that could be new and exciting for me again? i just figured out what it is. it's co-hosting the show with reba. i'm having a ball with it. >> man, i bet you are. we have about 30 seconds left. you have a busy summer. coming near baltimore any time during the next couple of seasons? >> yes, probably so but i couldn't tell you where i was going monday.
