thank you. laney lebeau sacks said she expected schaefer to spend another day or two in the hospital before being released. we'll have more coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. a teenager is charged as an adult with a violent attack on his own grandmother. 14-year-old hassani garrett is charged with assault. the victim, shirley garrett, is in critical condition. investigators say the teen struck his grandmother several times with the hammer while she slept because he was angry over the way she treated him. police were called. and he confessed. he is being held without bail. highway tragedy. two young people killed while watching an illegal street race in baltimore. mike hellgren has the latest from the baltimore county courthouse. >> the defendant, donnell rayburn has scars from the

accident. he has took the stand this morning. he said he had no recognition of the incident that could land him behind bars for years. >> reporter: the deadly scene unfolded near the park and ride. prosecutors say 27-year-old donnell rayburn was driving this chevy impala, which slammed into a crowd, watching an illegal drag race. 21-year-old mary katherine abernathy died, so did her friend, 21-year-old jonathan henderson. a judge will decide has fate. he faces 17 charges. and prosecutors say he was drunk, more than twice the legal limit. one witness did testify, rayburn tried to avoid the crowd. several others were injured. and police have since cracked down on racing in that area. >> reporter: prosecutors said in that closing statement that it was actually speeding up as it headed into the crowd of people. reporting from circuit court in towson, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news.

>> reporter: maryland lawmakers continue to push for tougher pen penalties for those involved in illegal racing. wjz will bring you the verdict as soon as it happens. another midshipman is expelled for using synthetic marijuana. a total of 12 have been kicked out after the investigation. the one expelled was a female sof nor. the others were males. some say the spices when smoked, give a marijuana-like high. put down weapons if moammar gadhafi meets their demands. danielle nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: moammar gadhafi's supporters show no sign of backing down. the libyan leader hasn't been seen in nearly two weeks. but he's passing out weapons to people near the capital who say they united -- they will use

them. >> where did you get this gun? >> they give everybody guns. >> reporter: they cut a deal with the tiny arab nation of gutter, aimed at helping libyan nations sell oil, store the money and use the money to buy arms. the opposition also indicated it's open to a cease-fire, but only with a series of conditions that gadhafi is not likely to accept. >> reporter: a cease-fire deal could mean the libyan leader would stay in power. that's something the obama administration doesn't want. >> gadhafi should not lead libya. and the people there should decide their future. >> reporter: leaving air strikes and no-fly zone up to other coalition partners. nato officially took command thursday. there are reports that british officials have talked to several members of gadhafi's inner circle. and that they are looking to talk with the u.s. and france as well.

a british government spokesman says that in those talks, the allied position is clear, it is time for gadhafi to go. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and as we heard, u.s. warplanes will play a role. but american forces will assist in missions like aerial resurfacing. it has been nearly a week since the earthquake devastated japan. search teams have to wear protective suits as we saw, as they look for victims. the evacuation zone remains at 12 miles. and the government says that will remain in effect for months. radiation from the plant has contaminated food and sea water, as far as 148 miles away. >> it's finally april. and this morning, we saw some showers, even a few snowflakes to the north and west. the sun is trying to peek out. is the rain gone for good. wjz has weather and traffic

a freak accident claims the lives of two experienced skydiving instructors in california. witnesses say the two men were

conducting a military training session when they collided in midair. they reportedly became entangled. and they plummeted hundreds of feet to the ground. they died on the scene. the incident is still under investigation. a news photographer in texas steps out from behind the camera, to save the lives of two motorists. adam baker was on the way when this car crashed in front of him. baker and another man broke his windows and pull the the passengers out. they have both been hospitalized. but they'red to recover. we're learning more about the fiery accident on board an aircraft carrier in california. several remain alert and two remain hospitalized. >> i said, fight the fire, fight the fire. and with that, that energizes the crew to go at the aircraft. >> reporter: the navy now says 11 people were injured on board the uss john c. stennis aircraft carrier wednesday

afternoon, after an f18 sea hornet took off. the plane, operated by miramar marine corps station, was on a catapult, ready to be launched. >> i am extremely proud of the flight deck and the corpsmen. the flight deck is very unforgiving, as far as the environment. and the personnel on board that are well trained to operate safely in this environment. >> reporter: all of the injured are in stable condition at the balboa naval medical center. officials say those involved were eight sailors, one marine, and two civilians who worked with the fight squadron based in miramar. one of four have been released. more are expected to to leave by the weekend. >> reporter: craig mckie reporting. the damage is expected to be more than a million dollars. the navy is still investigating the cause of the malfunction. it was no april fool's joke. the stock market is climbing to its highest level this year.

it appears good news about unemployment put buyers in a good mood. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow is up 57 points to close above the 12,000 mark. nasdaq, s&p 500 were also up. let's go to new york right now, where alison harmelin has tonight's cbs money watch update. the unemployment rate has fallen to 8.8%. the economy added 16,000 jobs last month, according to the government. financial services, healthcare and education led the way. retailers, factories hire workers as well. analysts say they continue to add jobs at roughly the same pace as last year. auto sales were up 11% last month at general motors. the car maker sold 206,000 in march. but ford sold 6,000 more. beating gm sales for only the

year. we have 47 here. detroit is going to play into our forecast here over the next few days. i'll explain that in just a second, too. 57 in atlanta. and this is where our weather is going to be coming from over the next few days. we're going to start to see a shift in the wind, from the west/southwest. this system that brought us the light snow showers out over parts of carroll county and frederick, has started to move well up to the northeast. the coldest of the air is still up there as well. it's bringing up widely scattered showers. we are starting to dry out a little bit. this is in the form of drizzle here now. and as you see, the state, not really covered in too much rain. but we cannot rule out the chance for some showers early this evening. and then early tomorrow. before we start to see some real improvement. then we will be on the warm side of a front that is going to move on through here. showers will get out of here. a high pressure builds in, saturday into sunday into monday. this warmer air that has been building in the southwest, is going to take over our forecast for two days. and timing is everything. it's going to mean for a pretty

it is 4:28. 47 degrees and partly cloudy. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. three weeks since the earthquake and tsunami ravaged japan. engineers are still struggling to stabilize that power plant. as randall pinkston reports for wjz, there is a new operation under way to recover this. japanese and u.s. rescue teams are intensifying their search for bodies in what could be the last chance to find victims swept out to sea. an estimated 15,000 people are still missing, after an earthquake and tsunami ravaged japan. for the next three days, 120 aircraft and 65 ships will scour the hardest-hit areas. >> the japanese does the actual recovery. we don't actually put hands on

any remains. but we can help find them. >> reporter: near the crippled fukushima daichi nuclear plant, search teams are wearing protective gear to guard against radiation. people within 12 miles have been evacuated. six miles beyond that, evacuation is voluntary. japanese officials say the order will probably remain in effect for months. the plant's owner released this video, taken eight days ago, which shows the extensive damage inside one of the reactors. smoke rises from the complex. japan's prime minister admits, even he doesn't know if the plant is stabilized. radiation from fukushima has contaminated vegetables, milk, and sea water. 140 miles south in tokyo, merchants are using geiger counters to prove their food is clean. and three weeks after the tsunami, japanese coast guard crews rescued a dog, floating on debris.

masseuse, jalissa brisesman was found. they even asked megan about massage. >> you have never been involved in any type of massage? >> no. he's never even gotten a massage. never gotten a massage in his life. >> reporter: when mar cov was arrested, police found blood on his shoes. >> they were blood stains and they came from the woman she had murdered. he had jalissa brisesman's blood on him, literally, when we took him into custody. >> reporter: that's not all. they found the gun used to kill julissa hidden nia medical book. incriminating e-mails, a knife and a look at the crime scene, the aftermath of what the d.a. says was a robbery gone bad. and the reason they say mar cov was ultimately caught. >> ifif he had just turned around and left at that moment, he might never have been

caught. instead, he chose to pull the trigger. >> reporter: but mar cov tells police he was at the hotel for other reasons. >> i'm listening to what you're saying. it's like a story. >> oh, i'm telling you a story? >> i don't have anything to add to it. >> investigators have not been able to conclusively determine any motive. police in florida continue to search for a missing police recruit, originally from here in maryland. 35-year-old kelly roth well moved from baltimore to florida several years ago. she was last seen march 13th. the day before, she told a friend she was going to break up with her live-in boyfriend, david perry. police say peris not cooperating with the investigation but so far has not been charged. new developments in the bizarre lisa nowak case. as you recall, the naval academy graduate was convicted of a burglary charge, after stalking a romantic rival.

the judge refused her request, saying any potential lawyer has like likely heard about the case. orioles' legend brooks robinson developed an infection before a routine operation. >> reporter: wjz was first to report yesterday at 4:00. brooks was set to undergo an outpatient procedure yesterday. however, he developed an infection and was hospitalized, just as a precaution of gbmc. he is doing very well, we are told. the public response has been so overwhelming, the hospital set up a special e-mail account so people could send their get well wishes. and people are also sending their get well wishes to wjz.com. betty writes, thinking good thoughts for you and your family. you are a true hero. today, doctors said they expect the infection to be cleared by the weekend and they plan to move forward with his scheduled procedure next week.

a small plane crashes into a us hoin north carolina. it flipped a home before crashing into a second home and sparking fire. the crash is still under

investigation. one child is dead and several other injured after a school bus collided. it upon at a busy intersection during rush hour. rescuers say both flipped on impact. several sustained life- threatening injuries. police believe the fog may have been a factor in the crash. but say the accident is still under investigation. casey anthony is back in court today, where they are arguing over scientific evidence. casey anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 2-year-old daughter kaley. police cadaver dogs alerted officers to spots in casey's car and home to the extent that human tissue remains. florida state prosecutors say they want to use new science technique to prove there was a decomposing body in the car. the murder trial for casey anthony will begin in may. a california man is under arrest today, for leaving his

14 meerbled daughter locked inside a sweltering car. rescuers say it was 115 degrees inside the car when they pulled the little girl out. the father had run into a cost co to pick up a few things and had cracked the windows slightly. the child was not harm in any way. her father was arrested for child endangerment. a 2-year-old boy found wandering alone in a wal-mart parking lot. we have more on the toddler's frightening journey. with a runny nose and a bewildered look in his eyes, store employees simply called the toddler, "their wal-mart baby." a store manager found the boy wandering the parking lot, in bare foot and t-shirt. >> very friendly. it was a warm day. we were happy it was a kind of warm evening. we were able to get clothes for him. he wasn't injured at all. >> reporter: by 6:00 a.m., the boy's mother called 911

frantically. investigators say the boy and his mother live on the first floor unit across the street. the special handicap door- friendly door was opened. at 3 feet tall, and 35 pounds, he was tall enough and strong enough to open it. >> reporter: investigators say the boy very likely walked across owens drive, which is a busy, six-lane thorough fair here in pleasanton. there was no traffic at the time. nonetheless, though, police say it was amazing that boy didn't get hurt. >> we're thrilled. we're thrilled that he wasn't injured. >> police say the incident appears to be an accident. but child protective services is investigating to see if the mother will face any charges before they are reunited. a statue of an angel will be unveiled in tucson today. christina green was born september 11th, 2001, and died january 8th, during the attack on congresswoman gabrielle giffords. the thin metal angels is made
