hi stakes assault. new details about the raid that led to the death of osama bin laden. how navy seals carried out the attack and what they found inside the compound. hi everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm congress. here's what people are talking about. it was agoutas move. u.s. navy seals dropping from the sky outside the home of the world's most wanted terrorist. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. when bin laden was killed he was unarmed. >> reporter: when navy seals raid third-degree pakistani compound they found osama bin laden and his family on the second and third floors. the white house says the terrorist leader resisted but was unarmed. >> bin laden was then shot and killed. he was not armed. >> reporter: behind the 18-foot high wall the aftermath of the raid is chaotic. dishes, carpets and clothing lie scattered on the floor of one of the buildings. outside onlookers hold what appear to be pieces of the u.s. helicopter that stalled during the raid. officials say dna and facial

recognition technology were used to identify bin laden. but now taliban leaders are questioning whether or not he is actually dead. they say the u.s. hasn't provided concrete proof. the white house says they do have photos of bin laden's body and his burial at sea, but they're still debating whether or not to release them. >> it's fair to say it's a gruesome photograph? >> it could be inflammatory. >> reporter: some believe it would put conspiracy theories to rest. >> i think for purposes of 100% identification there is value in doing so. >> reporter: lawmakers are also starting to ask questions about pakistan and what terrorism officials there knew about bin laden living in their midst for years. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. today cia director is briefing lawmakers in washington on the top secret mission. inside the bin laden compound. it's sealed off now and the pakistani armmy is keeping

special t-shirts in yardly love's honor. and they started their school day with a prayer in her anatomy. she was just 22 years old when her roommate found her body one year ago. her on again, off again boyfriend was arrested for the murder prosecutors say when she broke off their two yearlong relationship he went to her off campus apartment and beat her. last month his attorneys told a judge he had no intention of killing love and he'd never knew she was dead until police told him. he awaits trial while her friends and family remember the native and stand out lacrosse player. >> we hold onto our faith and the belief that this is not the end for yardly. that truly the beginning of a new life in heaven. >> reporter: also in notre dame prep varsity lacrosse players will all wear the number one in her honor during a lacrosse match this afternoon. they also awarded the first yardly love scholarship to eighth grader amber wane wright who will receive full tuition to the school. wjz eyewitness news. to donate money to the one

love foundation log onto join one love.org. coming up new at 5:00 hear from people at tonight's lacrosse game about how they are honoring yardly love's memory. a suspect in the abduction and beating of an elderly man is found and arrested in pittsburgh. 29-year-old jonathan buttoner is charged with forcing a 71- year-old man into his own car. the car crashed on interstate 68 and he fled. the victim managed to drive to a nearby exit where he was found by a passer by. if you live or work around the naval academy in annapolis you may smell natural gas today but don't worry. according to officials bge crews are introducing a new gas pipe for the academy. people along king george street from college avenue to rundale street may smell the gas, but there's no danger to the public. a maryland teacher honored. a local teacher chosen as national teacher of the year. jessica is live in the newsroom with more on today's reception at the white house for a teacher from frederick.

nearly a week after an ef-4 tornado slams shoot south some are still trying to clean up the pieces out of home that is no longer exist. what's left is now scattered along hillsides as far as the eye can see. more than 300 people died in last week's storms. seven people were killed in this georgia neighborhood alone. well, the weather's pretty nice in our area right now. outside the sun is shining and it's comfortably warm. wjz haswetter and traffic together. meteorologist bern debt woods is here with updated weather. >> hi everybody. it's a really warm afternoon. and humidity even up a little bit. a front is coming our way. show you first warn doppler radar. storm starting to fire some thunderstorms and slowly moving eastward. you see this box that has popped up just about half an hour ago severe thunderstorm watch was issued. switch it over and detail counties for you. allegheny and washington counties and just over the

border in pennsylvania extends eastward through york county. also along the coast here coastal flood advisories in effect because we have the southeasterly wind coming in to play. we have the rain moving in on top of it. so high tide cycle is going to run higher than normal. we'll have a full forecast coming up shortly. okay. thank you. let's check in on our roads now. here's wjz traffic control. >> hi everyone. we have one minor delay that's on the beltway. you're looking at ten minutes there from frederick road over to liberty road. major problem here now is the accidents. on the topside inner loop an accident at the jones falls expressway blocking the right hand lane. the delay back to stephenson road. north side outer loop another accident and harper road on the left hand shoulder. average speed in that direction about 32 miles an hour. northbound on the joint falls expressway at cold spring lane and several city accidents to update you on. register avenue closed between edgewood and wardman. alternate murdock in that area.

they may still soak a sweet tooth but you may will booking for sweets elsewhere or obsessively thinking about sweets all the time. >> reporter: even though the government has tested and approved the sweeteners, shoppers like christine have their doubts. >> i think there's questionable data about it. so if i can avoid it, i'll avoid it. if i'm going to get a soda, i'm going to get a soda with sugar. >> reporter: suspicion dates all the way back to the 1970s whens saccharin actually carried a warning label. the cancer warning came off more than ten years ago. but nutritionists are still wary. and they worry that dieters assume sugar free means it will help you lose weight. not always true since the products can still contain fats and carbohydrates. we looked a the two cookies from the same brand. one regular, one sugar free. >> not much of a difference. you're talking ability maybe five calorie difference per cookie. >> reporter: and the sugar free version is smaller which might encourage you to eat more. and the ingredient list is longer leading experts to say

the scouts saved. six stranded boy scouts are rescued from a flooded campground. a helicopter plucked the boys and two scoutmasters from the woods this morning. this happened in arkansas. the scouts were stuck in the wilderness for 36 hours after heavy rain flooded creeks. the boys say they were never scared while they were stranded. one of san francisco's most popular tourists evacuated alcatraz on sunday afternoon. a fire alarm went off on a boat that takes tourists to the island. turns out it was a false alarm. the infamous prison is back open for tours. hitting the pavement to help cure cancer. the maryland half marathon is less than two weeks away and andria explains why anyone can

participate. >> reporter: 13.1 miles for a good cause. >> most of my races are cause- driven. there's a purpose for running. >> reporter: the purpose for runner carl is to cure cancer. last july doctors removed a five centimeter tumor from his stomach, but that hasn't stopped him from competing. >> health issues. i've been running since the seventh grade. >> reporter: he's more than one of 2,000 people expected to run in the half marathon. >> the goal is to participate. the goal is to help raise funds for the center. and so there's every range of runners. >> reporter: it's the third year for the event. and this year it will be in howard county. the first two years alone the event has raised $450,000 for cancer research. >> one of the treatments developed here at this center has revolutionized the treatment of breast cancer and is in use around the world. >> reporter: whether cancer survivor, advanced runner or

profited from reselling risky mortgages then got the government to foot the bill. and it calls for the bank to return hundreds of millions in insurance claims. the bank calls the lawsuit unreasonable and unfair. auto sales rose about 19% last month. with a gallon of gas now over $4 buyers are investing in more fuel efficient vehicles. general motors saw sales jump 27% on strong demand for the chevy compact car. sales at ford rose 13% while toyota struggled. sales rose just 1% for the japanese automaker. toyota's sales may have been by the fewer incentives. businesses ordered more computers, cars and machinery driving factory orders up 3%. the parade of stronger than expected profit reports slowed today. several companies including pfizer, clorox released disappointing earnings. avon bucked the trend. helped triple profits at the cosmetic company.

it was really a nice day out. it's warm. >> feels great. >> feels hot when you get in the car to get the windows going. >> yeah. need the air-condition. >> because the sun is really starting to get strong this time of year. we have the humidity levels going up today and the temperatures got into the 80s.

but because of that first warn doppler radar showing you a cold front comes into this kind of an atmosphere it is prompting a severe thunderstorm watch. now it's only for western parts of the state right now. allegheny and washington counties until 10:00. it does look on this description like it cuts over towards baltimore. mostly they extend that as we head through the next hours. take a look out west thunderstorms starting to fire. moving very fast west to northeast. going to take time for this to spread eastward across the state. severe thunderstorm watch in effect through 10:00 tonight for the pink shaded counties also notice along the coast. we have a coastal flood advisory in effect for the usual areas. the high tide this evening probably the top of all the tides is going to come through about one to two feet above average. that's something we'll be watching out for. but the rain is going to continue after we deal with these thunderstorms. we'll take you through this right here. today mixed clouds and sunshine out there but here comes that line of thunderstorms starting to fire. and it will move eastward making its way across the state. as it does so we do have the

threat for some strong maybe severe thunderstorms. the biggest thing out of them that we're concerned with would be damaging wind and hail. and then that's going to change over to a rain overnight. it's going to take some time for this front to get through. the winds are out of the south ahead of all of this. they really are starting to pump. looking at a high so far today of 81 degrees. it's 79 in d.c. dew points have been in the low to mid-60s. they've actually dropped this hour back down to 60. still a lot of moisture in the air for not only the chance of severe weather although borderline in some cases and heavy rain and thunderstorms. here's the high so far today. the average is 70. it is climbing. we're way above that this afternoon. tomorrow that is going to change because behind this storm system here there is some much cooler air and it is moving our direction. we'll take you through all of it again tonight the threat for severe weather then the thunderstorms wind down into rain. by tomorrow we still have some rain and drizzle around. it will come to an end. the temperatures are going to take a major hit. then on thursday it all gets

out of here. a little bit of a break in our weather before yet another storm comes our way on friday. this one much weaker coming down to the northwest. it will bring clouds, chance for a few showers and it's also going to keep temperatures down. we'll try to rebound as we head through the weekend. on the waters with this going on small craft advisories in effect through wednesday. winds are out of the south right now but by tomorrow they will turn around to the northwest and become gusty. we do have that threat for severe thunderstorms as we head through the late evening and early nighttime hours. that will change to rain and drizzle and that will continue into tomorrow. really a big hit on our temperatures about a 20-degree temperature swing tomorrow afternoon. remember that when you're getting dressed in the morning. it's not going to feel like it did today. >> and it's not going to warm up like it did yesterday. >> exactly. >> it's going to stay that way all day. >> yes. more of a cool day out of all this. >> all right. thank you. we know don't miss tonight's cbs prime time line up. tonight at 10:00 it's the good life starring baltimore's own josh charles followed by

elite team to kill osama bin laden. we report on how the united states brought bin laden down. >> reporter: the c.i.a. found osama bin laden's hiding place when one of his trusted aids made a mistake. captured al qaeda operatives gave up the nickname of bin laden's courier during interrogations. agents figured out his real name and cell phone number. >> he left the phone on and all it took was one phone call to give away the location of the compound. >> reporter: last summer the u.s. began surveillance gathering evidence bin laden lived in the heavily fortified home. navy seals started training in a full scale replica of the compound without knowing who their target was. after eight months of planning, president obama gave the green light to send in the seals. not b2 bombers, to get proof bin laden had been killed. just before 1:30 a.m. pakistani time two black hawk helicopters approached the

compound. as navy seals dropped down ropes, one of the choppers stalled out but the seals continued the mission. in the white house situation room president obama and his national security team watched realtime video of the 40 minute operation. >> very intense period of time and we were holding our breaths. >> reporter: bin laden's men put up a fight. the seals cleared a smaller building first, then moved to the main building. they shot bin laden once in the head, once in the chest. >> ultimately it came out very well and the individuals who were involved in this performed flawlessly. >> reporter: in the situation room the president said we got him. cbs news, new york. >> the seals also took computers and hard drives from bin laden's hideout. intelligence officials are now combing through that information right now to see if there's any information about any planned attacks. not everyone is convinced that bin laden is dead. the taliban says it wants to see proof. we're in the newsroom with the debate over releasing pictures

of osama bin laden. >> that's right. it's a very touchy subject. we're told the pictures are incredibly gruesome. he was shot in the head and chest during that raid but sources say you can still identify him. there's also pictures of osama bin laden's burial at sea. the white house is balancing the desire for proof with concerns that the pictures could enanger andin flame muslims. today the white house admitted bin laden was not armed during the raid but bin laden still resisted being captured. thank you. president obama will share some of the details of the raid in an exclusive interview with 60 minutes. you can watch that sunday night right here on wjz. stopping the spread of radiation in japan. start fixing the nuclear plant crippled in the earthquake and tsunami. it could take the rest of the year to stop the leak. radiation levels are still 1,000 times above normal. a royal visit. nope. not the newlyweds prince william and kate middleton. william's father prince charles arrived in washington d.c. for

a three day trip. he started by visiting supreme court. then he'll meet with president obama and talk about sustainable farming. this is the prince's first trip to the united states in four years. flooding fears in the midwest lead to drastic measures. candice gibson reports for wjz. intentionally flooding farmland to save an entire city. >> reporter: flood waters washed over dozens of homes and thousands of acres of missouri farmland after army engineers blew apart a levee on the mississippi river. 20 inches of rain drenched this area in the past eleven days. and the army core of engineers is concerned if the river level did you want come down, the town could be lost. 2800 people live in the town which sits where the mississippi and ohio rivers converge. so far the plan appears to be working. the national weather service says the water level on the mississippi river is dropping. now army engineers are blasting holes further south on the levee trying to get some of the

water that escaped back into the river. the floods could cover farmland in missouri until late july or early august. farmers are concerned even once the water recedes the ground may not be good for planting. candice gibson, wjz eyewitness news. well, here in baltimore certainly feels like summer. the sun is shining and the temperature has climbed into the 80s. but don't be surprised if you see rain in the next few hours. bob is tracking some wet weather for us in the first warn weather center. >> yes. we have the ingredients for those typical summer thunderstorms. and some of them are going to be pretty strong west of us right now we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for allegheny and washington county with 81. take a quick look around. you can see the around the cumberland area good showers just moved through cumberland over toward little or license. a whole bunch of shower activity around that region. around the baltimore area very quiet. as i mentioned later this everyone probably it's going to take a few more hours before this activity begins to move in

our direction, but if you're heading out this evening probably after 7:00 or 8:00 probably see some showers and thunderstorm activity in the region as mentioned some could be locally strong gusty winds even some small hail. of course if anything happens we'll let you know. thanks, bob. in today's health watch the benefits of breast-feeding there is another reason for moms to breast-feed their babies. mary's in the newsroom with the big boost in health. >> well, a new study shows breast-feeding can help a baby's metabolism. researchers found babies breast- fed for the first four months have lower blood pressure and insulin levels. that's compared to newborns who drank formula. now doctors are trying to figure out what that means as the babies grow up and if it will impact their health as adults. thank you, mary. breast-feeding has already been linked to preventing asthma, diabetes and obesity. baltimore county parks like oregon ridge have been approved for deer removal although hunting is nowhere in the paperwork. something different will be tried even though the end

result is still a bullet. >> reporter: managed deer hunts rely in large measure on the arrows and bullets of recreational hunters. that has not set well with many nearby homeowners. >> it's horrible. we have deer with arrows in them running around our neighborhood. we have deer on the side of the road that aren't dead. >> reporter: but in county parks like oregon ridge, too many deer are devouring too much foilage. >> they are hardy eaters and they are kind of destroying the understory so the forest doesn't have the regeneration it should to replace our large oaks and other trees. >> reporter: that put the county council in the middle to hunt or not to hunt. the solution instead of opening oregon ridge to regular hunters a private company called a deer cooperator will be hired to thin the herd. >> we didn't want this to be a managed hunt so to speak. we want today make sure this was a controlled licensed wildlife management company. >> they're going to hire deer cooperators to shoot the deer

at night with night vision goggles already for activists there is a more humane way. this past winter she helped support the spaying and release of 32 wild deer. a practice deer cooperator programs can do. >> and we want an ongoing dialogue about alternatives that can help address wildlife over population. >> reporter: but a bullet is still cheaper than a vet hire today sterilize deer. >> if they follow the american veterinary association rules for you know what's acceptable euthanasia and they do single bullet to the brain as much as i hate it i'd rather than than see them walking around with arrows in them. >> reporter: wjz eyewitness news. even though the county is choosing these private contractors for deer removal in its parks, the state department of natural resources will set the rules and the standards. a massive car recall in your wjz consumer watch. honda needs to fix air bags on more than 800,000 vehicles. the air bags can inflate with so much force you can be hurt

two organizations are joining forces to build the world's largest online data base of information on victims of the holocaust. the world memory project aims to make the museum's vast archive of documents easily search you believe for free online. the museum already has 170 documents with information on millions of people targeted by the nazis. three people are found gunned down in the middle of the road in virginia now police are looking for the shooter. police in greene county say they found two men and a woman dead just after 3:00 this

morning. officers were investigating a home invasion in the area when they received a call about the bodies. the investigators are trying to see if the two crimes are linked. learning more about the disappearance of an illinois family. just hours later a relative says she received a chilling message from one of the children. here's more on what was said. >> according to police an illinois woman got a message from one of her granddaughters shortly after she, her sisters and her mother disappeared. stephanie owens and her three daughters disappeared on easter sunday. relatives say one of the girls left a message saying stephanie owens talked to god and said he didn't want them to celebrate easter. the message also said if the grandmother skipped easter she could also see god with them. police found the family five days later more than 200 miles from their home. they were unharmed but appeared to be disheveled. stephanie claimed she didn't know where they has been for the past few days. >> thank you. owens was taken into custody and undergoing psychiatric evaluation. secret service is in facing a suspicious package addressed

after 8:00 a.m. >> we heard this awful noise like a real loud terrible engine noise. >> reporter: she was driving her husband to work when she looked up and saw the plane coming at her. she gassed it to get out of the way as the plum eting aircraft whipped into the yard of a home not 50 feet away. >> it was just coming fast at a angle. less than ten seconds it was on fire. you know as soon as it hit the cars impact it was engulfed. it was a terrible sight. >> reporter: they saw the plane in the air knew it was in trouble. >> bop bop bop bop and then it went up and then it went down. i got so scared. that i couldn't see anymore. lots of fire. lots of explosion. >> the plane and several vehicles were destroyed, no one on the ground was hurt. the cause of the crash still is

out to the west of us right now moving pretty much from southwest to northeast in to pennsylvania. they're not going to effect the baltimore region not right now. cumberland just had one. pumpkin center fin stone right on you. storms are creating some gusty winds and even some small hail. little further west more rain around grantsville an accident out in garrett county. locally it's quiet. that's probably going to change later this eveningful that stuff out to the west extending even further west there's a lot more. show you that in just a minute. temperatures around the area right now 81 degrees. dew point is at 60. it's been coming up there humidity 48%. winds south-southwest 16. the barometer has been falling.

right out to the west oakland with some showers down to 65. cumberland i'm surprised you're still 79. probably next hour you'll be back in the 60s. 80 hagerstown. temperatures warm. the dew point is relatively high at 60. if it were 65 would be really concerned about heavy downpours but it's humid enough to see some pretty heavy rain in some areas later this evening. right now 81 annapolis. 78 in westminster. we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00 font. southern p.a. and for washington and allegheny county. and then neighboring counties there in west virginia until 10:00 tonight. a coastal flood advisory southerly winds once again are pushing the bay to the west from the south. so it's pushing it up the west side of the bay. that's why there can be tides running one to maybe two feet above normal. southerly winds have been with us all day long and continue and rather strong too 10 to 15, or 20 miles an hour at times.

frontal system slowly creep across the region. as the cool air starts moving in blind this front we'll see steady rain overnight into tomorrow morning. we have a little drizzle in the morning and then in the afternoon some slow very slow clearing. right now still plenty of sunshine. that first batch of storms developing up to our north right now heading up toward northern pennsylvania maybe southern sections of new york. as we look at the forecast map that front moves through overnight. turning much cooler tomorrow. may not even get up to 60 degrees. we're talking 20 degrees cooler than today. should be clearing out by late in the day in fact pretty chilly out to the west. some of the mountain valleys could see some frost tomorrow night and thursday morning. by thursday sunshine and much cooler conditions. maybe another shower in the forecast for the end of the week for friday. but winds picking up again on bay tomorrow. showers and storms tonight. some could be locally strong but much cooler overnight down to 53. leftover rain and drizzle early in the day.
