2300 firefighters are attacking the largest blaze called the wallow fire. it's burned at least 184,000 acres. that makes it the third largest in arizona state history. two other big fires have burned another 122,000 acres. heavy smoke is being pushed. the wallow fire has forced the evacuation of several small towns. kpho has more. >> reporter: this man owns a home and the latest word is the fire is headed right toward him. >> started creeping closer and closer. they were building spot fires trying to back burn it, and i don't know if it worked or not. >> reporter: the slightly calmer winds early sunday morning allowed hot shot crews on the ground to fight fire with fire. they pick a natural break like a road and burn from the road back into the fire to slow the spread. >> they're getting it done. they're protecting the property and that's what their focus is right now. >> reporter: but by midafternoon, the winds picked up and this unpredictable fire

had its way. that forced evacuations of several small subdivisions along the east side of highway 180 toward the new mexico state line. >> well, it's dry, the wind's blowing and they can't stop it. >> reporter: greer which is under a pre-evacuation order remains safe for the time being. >> we were very successful last night putting 30 miles of line which is phenomenal, but that is mostly around the area to try to protect greer and springerville. >> reporter: but that could change like the wind. >> it's still a very risky situation. >> that was donna rossi reporting this morning. in the northern plains, residents are bracing for more flooding. about 600 residents in southeast iowa have been forced to evacuate because of a levee breach. they've been weakened following days of high water. engineers opened dams to relieve pressure. to the gop field now for president. it will have a new entry today.

meanwhile a noncandidate tries to explain a somewhat shaky take on american history. joel brown in washington with more on that. >> reporter: good morning. let's start with rick santorum. not long ago, he was the number three republican in the senate. but he lost his seat after just two terms. now he wants back in washington. this time at the white house. former senator rick santorum kicks off his run for the white house this morning with an announcement in pennsylvania. >> americans have now realized that what they need is not someone that they can believe in. they need a president who believes in them. >> reporter: he's expected to seize on how president obama has handled the economy. only 54,000 jobs were created last month and unemployment rose to 9.1%. no president since franklin delanor roosevelt has been reelected when unemployment was above 7.2%. >> barack obama has failed the american people.

>> reporter: while the gop field is filling out, it is the candidates who haven't yet declared getting all the attention. >> i apologize if i stepped on any of that pr that mitt romney needed or wanted that day. >> reporter: sarah palin apologized sunday after her bus tour pulled in to new hampshire the same day mitt romney launched his bid. but palin made no excuses for comments she made about paul revere. she said his midnight ride was meant as a warning for both american colonists and british. >> you realize you messed up about paul revere, don't you? >> i didn't mess up. part of his ride was to warn the british that we're already there, that you're not going to succeed. >> reporter: the former alaska governor has still not said whether she'll run for president and write a new chapter in american history. while historians suggest that palin did get it wrong in her version of revere's ride, her supporters say the reaction to

it just points to the intense animosity that many feel towards the former governor. >> sure that isn't end of it. joel, appreciate it. thank you so much. the former head of the international monetary fund is set to be arraigned today. he's charged with sexually assaulting a hotel maid. dominique strauss-kahn is expected to plead not guilty to attempted rape and sexual abuse. his attorney says any sexual contact was consensual. he's hired a security firm to dig into the alleged victim's background. >> digging into the background of the alleged victim is the essential strategy, the only strategy for any competent good defense attorney. >> strauss-kahn has been under house arrest. if convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison. there's word the obama administration is considering a speed up in the withdrawal of american forces. they think faster troop reductions are justified by the war's rising costs and by the death of osama bin laden.

that's not the approach favored by departing defense secretary robert gates. he's now touring afghanistan to thank the troops before he steps down. gates wants to withdraw from the war gradually keeping most of the combat forces in the field well into next year. and in pakistan, officials launched three missile attacks at suspected militants. at least 16 were killed by the missiles fired by drone aircraft. yesterday it's believed another u.s. missile attack killed a top al qaeda leader, ilyas kashmiri. government run television says at least 20 were killed when israeli troops opened fired on demonstrators sunday. dozens were reported wounded. israel says they were warned not to cross the border and blames the government in damascus for instigating the unrest. the president of yemen is recovering from surgery.

saleh's departure set off wide celebrations in the capital. in the past two weeks, human rights groups estimate more than 160 protesters have been killed by government troops. "moneywatch" time. stocks in asia were off sharply. ashley morrison with that and more. >> asian markets were down across the board. mostly in reaction to the terrible government jobs report released here on friday. the nikkei lost more than 1% while hong kong's hang seng was also sharply lower. on wall street, stocks are looking to snap a five week losing streak. the market's longest since 2004. last week the dow and the nasdaq each lost almost 2.5%. both remain in the black for the year. apple's ceo steve jobs is expected to take a break from his medical leave today to unveil his company's highly anticipated new icloud streaming service. it will allow customers to store

and access media on the web instead of downloading it. it may even allow you to transfer it to other computers or phones. the service should cost around $25 a year. apple has already inked deals with several top record labels. nintendo has been hit by hackers. the company says no sensitive customer information was lost in the cyber attack. the same group that targeted sony has claimed responsibility. in a tweet they said they did it just for fun. and at the movies. a box office beat down. x-men first class, a prequel to the popular series, pulled in $56 million, less than the other x-men movies, but still respectable. the hangover part 2 fell to second place with yet another sequel, kung fu panda 2, in third place. that's two movies i have to see, kung fu panda 2 with jack and hangover part 2 for myself. >> and i saw x-men first class. you got to take somebody with

morning that u.s., british and canadian forces came ashore in normandy, france. june 6th, 1944. more than 160,000 troops landed on a 50 mile stretch of beach. the operation remains the largest amphibious invasion in history. test results may come today on the source of the deadly e. coli outbreak in europe. it appears the infection can be traced to vegetable sprouts from a single organic farm. 22 have died. more than 2200 developed symptoms. the farm has been shut down and all its products recalled. it's the deadliest e. coli outbreak in modern history. a potential breakthrough against deadly skin cancer. there are over 68,000 new cases of melanoma every year and there are 8700 deaths. that's one every hour. the five year survival rate is only 15%. now, though, medical researchers have found a drug that slows down the progress of the disease. cynthia bowers reports.

>> reporter: researchers stopped just short of calling this a magic bullet against skin cancer. but say vem you're any of rib is cause for celebration. >> patients are already much better, off of pain medicine. maybe off of oxygen. >> reporter: until now with the survival right of just 15%, a diagnosis of advanced melanoma amounted to a death sentence. this drug showed a 63% reduction in the death rate after three months. unlike chemo, this drug works by targeting only a genetic mutation called braf which may help the disease grow. this mutation is present in half of all melanoma patients. susan steele is living with stage 4 melanoma. at one point her life expectancy was just several months. but within a week of starting this drug last january, her tumor shrunk by more than 40%.

here's a look at the weather. partly cloudy and 77 in new york. miami, sunny and 88. partly cloudy and 92 in chicago. 101 in dallas and sunny, and 71 and sunny in los angeles. a few thunderstorms are hanging on in the southeast and southern plains. skies are mostly clear in the northeast. later today, summer like heat continues in the south and plains with high temperatures reaching as far north as minnesota. northern plains could see some severe storms and rain in california. in sports this morning, miami is halfway to winning the nba finals. in dallas the heat got the go

ahead jumper from chris bosh. a little under 40 seconds off, dirt nowitzki missed a tough jumper. the heat win it. game four tuesday in dallas. in baseball, a walkoff home run. 11th inning, albert pujols cracks a long homer to left. this gave the cards a 3-2 victory over the cubs. pujols did this on saturday, too. he's only the 11th in history to hit two consecutive game-ending home runs. at the french open, rafael nadal won his sixth men's final on the clay in paris. and finally, plaxico burress gets out of prison today. he spent 20 months behind bar fossil legally carrying a gun into a new york night club. he accidentally shot himself in the leg. burress will try to get back in to pro football, but he'll have to wait for the nfl labor dispute to be settled first. when we return, another look at this morning's top stories and the newest and youngest star on the new york art scene.

is expected to plead not guilty when he's arraigned today. strauss-kahn who resigned from imf last month is charged with sexually assaulting a new york hotel maid. the ever changing new york art scene has seen prodigies come and go, but the latest new kid in town, if you will, is certainly something special. elaine quijano has her story. >> reporter: at first glance, it's the kind of art you'd expect to see. >> she's an abstract expressionist, but also a surrealist. >> reporter: the pieces come with sophisticated titles. butterfly neb nebuli. escape from the cosmic zoo. a closer look reveals hints about the artist's identity, a little heart, a pink pony and handprints. she is 4 1/2-year-old aelita andre. >> how does it make you feel when you paint? >> very special. >> reporter: the young australian is already a veteran in the art world.

at age 2, she had a body of work and now she has her first solo exhibition in the united states. the gallery director was impressed by the art, the imagination and use of color before she learned her age. >> i think she is good. and not just good for a 4 1/2-year-old. >> reporter: but the high quality of the pieces has led to skepticism from some who question whether the paintings are truly hers. her father insists they are authentic and says he videotapes her working on her pieces. even before the exhibit opened, four of the paintings sold. each cost around $5,000. aelita doesn't seem too concerned with reviews or expectations. >> what do you want to be when you grow up? >> a caterpillar. >> reporter: and if she can do this, maybe that's possible, too. elaine quijano, cbs news, new york. this morning on "the early show," the latest on some drug cancer breakthroughs. and sarah palin's version of

it's monday morning. tim is in for marty. >> good morning. definitely a pretty nice start. it's going to be a very, very warm week. we had a few showers yesterday and last night. things have cleared out now. we open it up a bit and show you that we had some showers move through. they've started to clear near the lower portion of the area. what you are seeing is not really much going on. just a few really widely scattered speckles down on the radar. our forecast is going to reflect high pressure moving into the region. that will be with us through the week.
