about. >> the woman was bit by the pit bull while she was getting her mail this morning. she is in serious conditions. derek valcourt has the story. >> reporter: because of the woman's age and severity of her wounds, her family tells me they are worried about her recovery. it happened friday night where the 1-year-old lived with henrietta rouser and her family. >> i take full responsibility of what happened with the lady because usually my dog is inside the house. >> reporter: she admits the dog did bite the elderly woman in the face. the victim's family members declined to speak with wjz on camera but say after a six hour jaw reconstruction surgery, athena niafitu is still on icu.

she is hooked up to a breathing machine on a coma and she could be on a feeding tube for three two four months. >> i feel terrible, i really do. i just -- >> reporter: rouser feels so bad she's even written this apology letter to the victim and her family saying they are praying for her recovery. they even had a copy translated in greek. for now the dog is being held in quarantine until a hearing determines his fate. >> the family you might imagine wants to put this dog down. how do you feel about that? do you contest that. >> no, to tell you the truth i love my dog. but i will not contest it. for her to come home to her house and her neighborhood, i will do that. >> reporter: the dog's neighbors have already been issued three citations from the

city. family of the victim say they have already contacted an attorney. another incident involving their dog is causing controversy in anne arundel county. a little girl witness as man kill her dog and tonight the family is seeking justice. denise is following the case for us from the newsroom, denise. >> reporter: the dog was shot to death in the middle of a sever neighborhood. it happened sunday on the 700 block of oriol court. the family was walking their pit bull named cane. that's when hoe was attacked by another dog, and that's when the owner took out a gun and shot cane. >> i feel real distraught. because my daughter, she could have been injured. this is something that, i mean you have to really know you know your surroundings when you're firing out in the open like that. >> reporter: police have not identified the man who shot the dog.

they are looking to whether he had a permit to carry a gun. animal control will hold on to the other dog involved in the incident until the investigation is complete. the trial continues for baltimore police officer accused of killing an unarmed man. today a police sergeant testified that officer tashambi appeared under the influence during that shooting. mike hellgren is covering the story. >> reporter: the big question that lingers about this case was this self-defense or was it murder. the prosecution rested here about 10 minutes ago and they called a powerful witness today. was it difficult for you to testify today ma'am? >> no comment. >> reporter: amy dodge stood just steps away from brown.

w hen he was shot. brown smacked the buttocks of tashambe's female companion. she says he apologized for it. but she remembers brown's last words. i got shot as he fell to the ground. >> it wasn't about poking holes today, it was about an intense difference in her testimony. >> the woman who would be closest to the incident and least favorable to the defense. >> reporter: a police sergeant took the stand too and he told the judge that officer teshambe appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was slurring his words. he also asked the officer if

has been weeks in the making, and katherine pew has made her announcement. a race of included carl stokes now also running for mayor. pew increases the field of democrats to six not unusual for baltimore. >> baltimore doesn't have a very centralized. it's quite common that you get multiple candidates. >> reporter: the front runner is mayor blake. but other candidates believe since she was appointed mayor after sheila dixon resigned and not elected by the people, she can be taken. and others in the race are otis roely. expect a lot of campaigning in a very short time.

call police. crews resumed searching today for a man who disappeared in a maryland reservoir. yentsen was last seen drowning. crews didn't find anything today but they do plan to continue looking tomorrow. ocean city is on alert as dead fish are washing ashore by the dozens. beachgoers are being warned to stay away. the fish had their heads and tails chopped off and many are decomposing. >> the dead fish started washing ashore on delaware's fishes this weekend. they are often processed on board ships. why they are ending up headless and tailless remains a mystery.

hundreds of these partially processed fish. >> it looks like you took a white paint brush and made a white line on the ocean. there might be a thousand of them together. >> reporter: crews are cleaning up the dead smelly fish as quickly as they can. and beachgoers are being warned not to touch the fish. it's kind of gross, because when the kids went out to the water said it was smelly on the beach. it was pretty quick. from the time we got here, it was 15 minutes before the guys cleaned it up. delaware's division of fish and wildlife is investigating. along with maryland's department, many say it's likely that the fish were dumped from a commercial vessel. things are much more calm on baltimore's waterfront tonight. it's a nice comfortable start

to the workweek but will it last? wjz is live with live weather coverage. bob turk and bernadette woods are updating conditions. bob-- >> today is going to be the coolest day. beautiful clear skies, very comfortable conditions. temperatures low to mid-80s right now. the humidity only in the mid- 30s. that's going to come down a little bit. temperatures will only get warmer. take a look at tomorrow, a little graphic we have for you. to the west of us particularly, ohio, indiana probably the mid- 90s. we're going to get to 90 degrees tomorrow and it's just going to go up for wednesday and thursday. we're talking mid- to upper 90s across the region. the only chance we have for my rain probably be coming here on friday and that's going to help knock temperatures down. as far as rainfall goes, a little bit scattered this weekend.

bernadette woods has a look at those temperatures. >> unless you're underneath of those rainfalls, we're starting to suffer in the rainfall. we're about a half inch down in a month. we're only a few days into this month. so it's quickly adding up. we're an inch and a half down for the year. so starting out as a pretty dry june here. we do have a few chances for showers and thunderstorms starting to develop later on in the week. we have that forecast coming up. a large piece of history is parked in maryland for the night. u.s. airway play that landed safely in the hudson river in 2009 is stopped at the perryville wayne station until tomorrow morning. look at that sight. the plane is being moved to a north carolina museum. the journey will resume at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow when the plane is heading west on interstate 70. can you imagine. most people i don't know what's going on. >> you took the words out of my

new constructiondelays. tonight one of the city's busiest streets is closed for repairs. it's part of the preparations for baltimore's grand prix. gigi barnett says drivers are not the only one feeling the impact. >> reporter: it is a short stretch of road that could cause some long delays. orange and white cones, construction crews, and bumper to bumper traffic all equal one thing. a new traffic pattern on one of the city's busiest streets. >> you try to get around it but you can't. >> reporter: city leaders are closing conway street in both directions between light and charles street. >> kind of a mess. >> reporter: it's all to make way of the baltimore grand

prix, a new event into baltimore's streets. >> some streets have not been repaired for years. >> reporter: conway street is right in the middle of race route. it shut down this morning at 5:00 a.m. and the detours and delays aren't just for drivers. >> reporter: they're blocking it off and i won't be able to cross the street. it's going to be a problem for me. and i have to walk all the way around. >> reporter: the city says there are several detours drivers can take. for instance outbound traffic can take lombard street to howard and that should lead them out of the city. and if drivers are coming into baltimore, take i395 right down to mlk. we're no downtown baltimore, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news, now back to you on tv hill. right now christie breslin is monitoring the traffic's impact. >> reporter: let's go to a live

shot right there on conway street. it's going to make your commute home and into the city a little more difficult. conway is closed between charles and light street. so the best way to get around that is out bound to lombard. if you can avoid the area that would definitely be your best bet. as far as other accidents go in the region, if you're traveling on the east side of the outer loop we have an accident there at hawkins point road. delays continue on the west side interloop, that is to liberty road. and on the north side outer loop unfortunately no improvement there. traffic still crawling along. northbound 95 slow traffic there from 32 to 175. and some congestion to watch out for up to the harbor tunnel. you can see not too bad there, 95 just north of 24 in hartford

minneapolis. 94 kc. dallas 97, all that heat. 87 in new orleans, showers and storms. this heat building in the central pushing to the midwest. it's going to be moving to the east. tomorrow close to 90. expecting mid- to upper 90s on wednesday, thursday, friday probably just a tad cooler as the front might get to the area friday afternoon evening but scattered thunderstorms. that will put an end to this heat wave that we're expecting this week. right now all the activity is drying up. we still have showers saturday night but they were very widely scattered. look how clear it is from vermont all the way down to the carolinas and that's just going to build heat over the next few days. high pressure goes down across the carolinas. that means the heat goes down to the west northwest bringing in the heat from the mississippi valley. five to 10 knots at the bay. the bay temp about 44 degrees.

it's 5:30, 85 degrees and sunny. good evening thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. higher tolls, with a hike in bridge tolls looming, people who depend on the hatum bridge are vowing to fight to stop tolling from going up in their community. alex demetric is in cecil county. with the first no toll protest. >> reporter: not everyone wants to pay higher tolls. for the occasional bridge it's $5. but for locals $10 by a decal bought for a year.

>> we have learned a woman is in critical condition after those bounce houses flew away. the mayhem was captured on home video. 13 people were sent to hospitals following the accident saturday on long island. most had minor injuries but today we're learning that kathleen hughes suffered head and spine injuries. it's not known if the houses were securely fastened. >> so far league officials have not commented. the u.s. military says five american soldiers were killed in iraq this morning. it is the most american deaths in one day since 2005. terrell brown has the latest for wjz from washington, d.c. >> reporter: five american service members were killed in baghdad this morning. rockets slam into a joint u.s.- iraqi base where americans were working as advisors. it is the single largest loss of life for the military in

they eliminated that threat. >> initial test reports from this organic farm shows sprouts are not the culprit. >> these tests are negative. >> reporter: directors at the farm questioned how sprouts could carry the deadly bacteria since they are grown with seeds and water. manure and fertilizer are usually involved in e.coli outbreaks. close to one dozen people have gotten sick here in britain after traveling to germany. but markets here insist there's no e.coli threat and they're urging customers to keep buying fruits and vegetables. >> i am not eating salads anymore. it's a shame. >> i try to listen to it, but if we would listen to everything, we wouldn't eat. >> reporter: workers destroyed tons of the vegetables and
