officer on trial. he's accused of gunning down an unarmed marine. >> was it murder or self- defense. hello, i'm don scott. and i'm jessica kartalija. the defense just began their arguments as they try to save a city police officer from life in prison. mike hellgren has more. >> reporter: this officer,'s defense team started their trial today against the fact that he murdered tyrone brown. tshamba claims it was self- defense. prosecution witnesses included a friend of brown's sister. have, she said she saw brown begging for his life. tshamba fired the service weapon over and over again.

the officer's lawyers say that the witness' testimonies are inconcession taint -- inconsistent. >> both sides are indicating that he was wrong for what he did regardless of any intoxication or he was actually consistently doing what he was taught to do. >> reporter: brown's sister was there and her statement was inconsistent with the other witnesses. brown family filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the officer in the city. >> there was no aggressiveness on the part of brown. he was in retreat, trying to apologize and resolve the dilemma. >> reporter: tshamba is in leg shackles. a judge, not a jury will decide the case.

prosecutors presented 14 witnesses while making their case. wjz will have more on the case at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00. a metro police officer is behind bars this noon and facing a new charge in connection with the murder of a baltimore county woman. mary bubala has more on this case. >> reporter: good afternoon, don and everyone at home. this officer is now charged with man slaughter in the death of a 1-year-old girl. he's accused of shooting a 20- year-old to death. then, he hid her car with her 1- year-old daughter inside. the girl was found dead days later probably from the heat. there's a possibility he's the little girl's father. phillips is also charged with first degree murder with the death of the woman. he's held without bond. phillips is an eight year veteran and married with a 12-

year-old daughter. the miracle on the hudson is driving through hudson now. they're in washington county. the plane spent last night in perryville after arriving in maryland yesterday afternoon. the final destination is charlotte, north carolina. that's where the flight was headed two years ago. disgraced congressman, anthony wiener is trying to save his political career after admitting he sent lewd pictures over the internet. >> reporter: anthony wiener is fighting to save his political life. >> i haven't told the truth. i've done things i deeply regret. >> reporter: the married lawmaker admits he treated a sexual photo to a seattle woman

welcome back, the sun is out. we have clouds pause of the storm to the northwest. this is going to bring us a warmup. right now, we have a few thunderstorms with it. these are fizzling out quickly. we'll have a chance for a shower and thunderstorm with that batch. this is moving straight to the south. the western parts of the state will see showers and thunderstorms with that. we'll switch it over and show you what it looked like earlier today. we're getting a few clouds from the storms from the northwest. we'll be in and out of those into the afternoon. here comes the warmer air on the south west winds. 88 in ocean city with the wind off of the land and not off of the water. cooler out to the west.

there's a code orange air quality alert in effect for today. it will be extended throughout the next few days. we're probably going to see heat advisories over the next few days. we have intention heat coming our way. we'll jump to the upper 90s tomorrow and thursday. you factor in the humidity and the high dew points, it's going to feel like we're in the lower 100s. this is where the air's coming from. we've been breaking records right and left. 89 in minneapolis and 88 in chicago. that's all moving in our direction. you can see the band of showers and storms from the north right now. that's continuing to move away. we'll get into the intense heat. the temperatures are rising and they'll keep on rising. wednesday and thursday are the hottest days.
