year-old boy whose young friend accidentally shot him during a sleepover. police are looking into whether the gun's owner should face charges. we are live at police headquarters. mike was at the funeral this morning. >> reporter: the gun's owner told us earlier in the week he had no idea how the kids got access to the weapon. we heard it over and over again at the funeral today that there was no reason for something like this to happen. michael's life was short. he left a long legacy among heart broken loved ones who came together for his funeral a week after his friend accidentally shot him in the head. >> it is not right. >> reporter: at the service the pastor reassured family that michael was at peace. michael was a huge ravens fan. >> michael was a great kid. he did not deserve what

happened. me being a steelers fan, i love him. the memory of michael, i wore his jersey today. >> reporter: michael was with his friend in a home in cherry hill when they got a gun. the homeowner, a retired correction's officer said he no idea how they got his gun. >> everybody is hurting. >> you cannot blame anybody. you cannot dwell. it happened already. it is over. you have to move on. >> reporter: michael, she says, would want it that way. he would have been entering the tenth grade in the fall. we should also know police confiscated all the guns inside that house. reporting live at city police headquarters. >> police say if you have children in the home any gun should be locked and unloaded with loaded with loaded with

are not going to get sick. >> reporter: they are still paying for bottled water deliveries. the station is on the other side of the fence. the most emotional testimony in the entire case came from a woman steps from the station. this is vicki's nail salon. >> reporter: she came to this country 20 years ago with $200 inner pocket. she built a strong business. then came the leak. half of her customers left. >> the smell and all of that. >> reporter: her minivan needs repairs and today she missed the call from her lawyer. she is stunned when i tell her the jury awarded her $15 million of exxon's money. >> oh my gosh. >> reporter: nothing will compensate for the fear. >> you always worry another 20

or 30 years what could happen to you. >> reporter: the families have been prepared by their attorneys that this is the first step. the awards could be reduced and it will be years before anybody sees any money. reporting in jacksonville. >> exxon plans to appeal the jury's decision. thieves pose as comes to break into a home. thesteresis expects -- three suspects pretended to be city homeowners. they only stole a cell phone. the attackers got away before the real police arrive. this is the second time in a week criminals have posed as city police officers. a gruesome discovery in georgia that could be tied to a missing howard county native.

police in georgia found a dismembered body outside of an apartment. they are trying to determine if it was a recent graduate in law school in the atlanta area. she has not been seen since saturday. police hope to identify the body soon. a break in the case of a murdered delivery driver. detectives arrested william karr today. karr had just got out of prison last year after serving 20 years for an armed robbery. sexual assault case against the former head of the international monetary fund takes a dramatic turn. randy pinkstonston reports for wjz. >> reporter: dominique strauss- kahn was released after prosecutors dug into the background of a hotel

housekeeper who accused him of sexual assault. >> that investigation raised concerns about the complaining witness' credibility. >> reporter: the district attorney's office sent a letter saying the made misrepresented what she did after a luxury attack in a new york city hotel and admitted she made up a story of being raped. her attorney fired back outside of the white house insisting she was the victim of a brutal attack. >> medical evidence supports the victim's account. the forensic evidence supports her account. >> reporter: prosecutors have not dropped the charges of strauss- kahn. they are keeping their investigation opened and plan to be back here for another hearing in a few weeks. strauss- kahn and his attorneys thanked the judge and believe the case will be dismissed. >> we maintained from the beginning that strauss- kahn is

innocent of these charges. >> reporter: his arrest in may forced him to resign he is leadership post at the international monetary fund and scrap plans to run for president in france. he can not leave the u.s. but there are talks he could be a candidate again. in new york randall pinkston. >> the court is keeping strauss- kahn's passport. his allowed to travel in trust but he can not leave the country. more surprised twists today in the the casey anthony murder trial. the judge stopped the trial this morning so lawyers could question the witnesses. after taking breaks for several hours prosecutors made their case that anthony killed her young daughter. the ceo of baltimore city schools will keep he is job as the head of the school system. he is signing a new contract in the middle of controversy.

>> reporter: the contract is worth $260,000 every year. that's more than a million dollars by the time it expired in 2015. four more years at the healm of the city schools. his previous contract, fir -- expired last night. >> there is concern of keeping that talent in baltimore city and deep commitment. >> reporter: he says they had to act fast. other school systems will take years to turn around. his new contract comes when the district is under fire. two elementary schools caught cheating on standardized tests.

he signed his first contract in 2010. now this second contract adds four more years to his stay in baltimore. it is enough time to make more improvements to the school district. >> it is a big enough problem that it take more than four years to solve it. >> reporter: if the improvements are met like boosting test scores as well as attendance rate his contract has a provision in it that allows a bonus. back to you. >> thank you. his contract includes a $750 monthly payment for a car and driver. first day of july is like the last day of june. absolutely gorgeous. you cannot ask for much better weather to start the holiday weekend. we have your first warning weather forecast. burn debt woods and tim williams are here with a look at the conditions if you are heading out on date night tonight.

>> it is spectacular outside. this weather has been beautiful the last couple of days. nothing in our area. you can notice a front towards the great lakes. what the front will do is get closer tomorrow. there is a chance for a pop up shower or thunderstorm. nothing extreme tomorrow but heat will build and humidity will build. as we head sunday into monday the front comes through. a better chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. there is still just scattered showers and thunderstorms. this is not an all-day soaking rain we are looking at here. as tim said earlier, 90% of the weekend is looking good. we'll talk you through it as we head through the show. now out to tim. >> not all of us have seen big

scattered showers when they pop up. that's what happened all through june. while we normally have three and a half inches of rain through june, we actually got about 3.51. it gave us surplus of a tenth of an inch. for the year we are down an inch. normally we would have 20.74. we got just under 20. we are in the deficit of about an inch for the year so far. it is largely because we have all of these widely scattered showers. some of us see them some of us don't. that's the case through the holiday weekend. we'll have a lot of sun like we have out here. find a shady friend and stick close to them. we'll have your first warning forecast coming up. >> thank you. hitting the road for the holiday weekend. hundreds of thousands of marylanders are heading out of town for the 4th of july. as we report, high gas prices

aren't expected to keep people at home. >> reporter: aaa expects 652,000 marylanders to drive to their holiday destinations, down 4% from last year. >> the gas prices got down and then they stopped. >> reporter: an average gallon of unleaded in maryland is at $3.55. a year-ago it was $2.75. aaa admits the survey may not be completely accurate. it was done at the end of may when gas prices consider 40- cents higher. >> although the projections indicate a decline we could see it not to be as significant as expected. >> reporter: more positive news? 60,000 madison square ,000 marylanders are expected to fly this weekend. high gas prices were going to stop this woman as she fills up for ocean city. >> we are happy they went down. >> reporter: so many marylanders are chosing to stay

putting violent offenders behind bars is the summer program that's been a huge success. >> reporter: city-wide effort to put criminals where they belong. >> as long as the offenders remain on the street the more opportunity they'll have to

reoffend. >> reporter: agencies are targeting violent offenders with a super jump-start war initiative. >> these have been on the list that needs to be apprehended. we made a decision to focus our resources collectively on getting it done. >> reporter: in june the city cleared more than 1,000 warrants and arrested 635 people. it was over probation violations, sex and gun crimes. it has been so effective the city is extending it for another two weeks. >> he was arrested for armed robbery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. he was arrested 6/7/11. >> reporter: police will continue to focus on robbery,

happening high up. >> the satellites now are not good enough to diagnosis what's at surface fashion levels versus what's higher in the atmosphere. >> reporter: pollution levels generated by cars, goal burning power plants and lawn mowers is best for satellites. nasa is looking for samples between street level and space. >> they are trying to get the atmosphere up to 10,000 feet. >> reporter: day line flights corkscrew up and down over the same maryland terrain. for the pilot it means hours of tricky maneuvering. >> looking out for other traffic. listening to the radios and what air traffic control wants us to do. and don't run into any structures out there. >> reporter: our area was chosen from the study because a lot of what we breathe drifts in from other states.

>> a satellite is unable to distinguish currently whether the pollution is above your head or where you are breathing. >> reporter: it is like data collected by the plane's instruments will help fill in the blanks by allowing researcher to fine tune future satellite readings. >> if you missed the nasa flyover today you'll have plenty of other chances. flights will take place tomorrow and through 4th of july. the pilots are having great weather to fly around. 88 degrees is where we sit. dew points are so low. just a breeze out there. humidity is low. we'll see some changes through the holiday weekend. we'll take you through that after this break. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

88 degrees is where we topped out today. humidity was low on top of that. we started out today at a low 60 degrees. 90 d.c. it is 80 degrees at the ocean. warmer in the mountains. 81 cumberland. 81 oak land. dew points are low. that's why they are so comfortable with low humidity. all of us in the 80s right now in the metro area. we had a north westerly wind bringing in drier air. temperatures will be building and eventually the humidity. because of that air quality alert will be in effect. it is a code orange air quality alert. this is the air coming our way. look at these numbers here. 97 degrees in minneapolis. 90s all the way straight down to the gulf. starting to warm up in chicago at 88. that's moving our way.

it is coming via this storm. tomorrow the chance for a shower or thunderstorm is a small chance. it would be late in the day over the mountain. but as we head into sunday and monday the front gets closer. it ups our chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms sunday into monday. for the holiday weekend we may have a thunderstorm or two to dodge. on the waters tomorrow it is beautiful. south winds 5 to 10 knots. sunrise 5:45. sunset 8:37. tonight a comfortable night. we are down in the 60s. 64 degrees. tomorrow we are back up to 90. humidity will start to feel sunny to partly cloudy. it will continue to build over the weekend to up the chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms. five-day forecast is coming up later here. >> thank you very much. still to come new laws you need to know about including changes when you buy your next

good evening. we are following breaks news in south baltimore. we are over the scene of a possible drowning. captain mike has more for us. >> reporter: right now we are following a body recovery. this occurred in south baltimore middle branch. police and fire called to the scene for a body seen floating in the middle bridge. fire officials responded. the fire boat has secured the body of an adult male at this point. he is deceased. police are now trying to retain custody of that body. it will be taken to the state

medical examiner's office to determine how this adult male died. at this point it is not clear exactly what occurred here over than a body recovery. you can see they are working near the boat ramp in the harbor hospital area. no traffic is affected here. back to you. >> thank you. a dangerous airport security breech, the man accused of sneaking on to a plane appears in court. we have the report for wjz. this incident exposes serious holes in airport security. >> reporter: he is accuse odd boarding a plane want expired boarding pass in someone else's name. today in a los angeles federal courtroom a judge called the 24- year-old nigerian national a flight risk and denied him bond. >> he had plans to travel to nigeria next week. >> reporter: authorities say the nigerian passed through security making it on to a

virgin american flight at new york's j.f.k. headed to los angeles. half way there a flight attendant noticed he was sitting in a seat that was supposed to be everyonetism the flight continues because he was make nothing threats. when he tried to do the same thing at lax earlier this week authorities pounced. when they searched his bags they found ten more boarding passs with different names. authorities that the time did not believe he is part of some sort of a terrorist organization or that this incident is some sort of a dry run for a careless plot. tsa receased a statement saying. he is charged with being a stowe away on an aircraft. he could face up to five years in president -- prison if

convicted. a man described himself on a facebook page as the frequent traveler. his due in court next month. big changes today in maryland. several new laws go into effect that you need to know about. sales tax on alcohol jumped from six to nine percent. you can eat with your dog at restaurants that allow outdoor seat. car dealers can add a $2 dealership fee when you buy a new or used vehicle. starting today you can have your favorite bottle of wine shipped to your home. customers are already buying. >> reporter: raising a glass to new revenue they lived in maryland before they moved to new jersey. on rare visits they get a chance to taste the wine. once in new jersey they had to do without. >> we can not get wine shipped to our state from maryland. >> i get wine shipped from virginia now. i go to a wine tasting there

wjz. >> reporter: congress received a new treasury department report on the new debt crisis before leaving for the 4th of july holiday. it warnings of major risks to the economy if lawmakers fail to raise the debt limit in the next month. lawmakers agreed to get back too the table next week. both sides want deep spending cuts to company any increase in the debt limit. democrats also want to end tax breaks that benefit big corporations and wealthy americans . >> i don't care that they make a billion dollars. why should they pay ten percent less than you'd pay in the tax in the income they make? >> reporter: lawmakers agreed on $1.3 trillion in cuts but they need to come up with $2 trillion in order to raise the debt ceiling. republicans insist the government needs to come up with that money not tax pioneers the idea that if we raise taxes as the president said on millionaires and billionaires that that will make it different in america's

debt in term of having a real impact. i think it is disappointing. >> reporter: time is running out. democrats say a deal has to be hammered out by mid july to give lawmakers enough time to get it passed. danielle nottingham wjz eyewitness news. >> top aid on capitol hill say lawmakers are look at a plan that raise debt limit by two and a half trillion dollars. that would provide enough money to get the government through next year. founding of phillips seafood is being remembered as he passed away. they opened their first restaurant in ocean city back in 1956. since then they have expanded the popular restaurant to six other cities including the north harbor. he was 90 years old. time for a quick look at stories you'll find in tomorrow morning's edition of the

parents of a missing indiana student made an impant for their daughter's return. they need anybody with information to come forward. their daughter disappeared four weeks ago. her parents say they'll continue to hold out hope. they had message for their daughter. >> i want to say hi loren it is mom. we love you. we are going nowhere. we are here for you. we want you to come home. >> the 20-year-old was last seen leaving a friend's apartment in the early morning hours of june 3rd.

police have been following leads with three of her friends. a trip to the washington monument turned scary for 16 tourist who became trapped inside. they got stuck in an elevator 500 feet off the ground. d.c. fire and rescue manually lowered the elevator to the ground in 20 minutes. none of the tourist were hurt during that incident. a powerful storm races through the midwest bringing golf ball-size hail. this is video of broken windows on the garfield park observatory. hailstones smashed hundreds of windows in the building built in 1908. no estimate on the cost of the damage or how long it will take to replace all that glass. prince albert of monaco tied the knot with south african limp on. crowds were outside of the palace hoping to catch a glimpse of the two newlyweds. the couple will have a more
