now, it is complete coverage, it is wjw maryland's news station. looking for clues, a maryland woman found dead in georgia, what police found in her apartment and who is being questioned tonight. good evening, i'm andrea fujii, adam may is off, the howard county woman is assumed dead tonight. police found a body near her georgia apartment where she just graduated from law school. pat warren has more. >> reporter: that is right, the body was found use the apartment building where she lived. police say they have two persons of interest in custody. the georgia police believe they found the body of 27-year-old lauren giddings, but say they can't be sure it is the body. >> it is the homicide victim. >> reporter: she graduated earlier this year.

the laurel, maryland native was reported missing, a local person was a person of interest in the case, he said he searched for her. >> we went in, there was no sign of a struggle or that anybody had broken in. just nothing, just she was gone. all of her stuff was there, her id was there, her wallet was there, but she -- she was just gone. >> reporter: police released no information about the cause of death but have included a search of a nearby landfall in their investigation. the neighbor says he saw something on her computer. >> she said she was afraid in her apartment that she thought somebody had tried to break in on thursday night. and that -- she was afraid to stay in there. >> reporter: steven mcdaniel was later arrested as a suspect in an unrelated burglary. and police have not identified the second person they consider of interest, back to you andrea. thank you pat.

the family of lauren giddings laid flowers outside her apartment today. and a man shot to death, a police officer punched in the face during a club fight in rosedale around 1:30 this morning, one of the responding police officers was assaulted, and a suspect was tasered at the scene. right now the police have a person in custody. one person dead, a woman fighting for her life after a fire in anne arundel county, in the 1300 block of shore drive in edge water. one person was already dead when the firefighters arrived. the other taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. more than 60 firefighters responded to the scene. another fire in east baltimore spreads to three houses, displacing several families. the flames started inside a row home. the firefighters say everybody was able to escape safely.

one of the houses partly collapsed. the investigators are searching for the cause. new mexico's massive wildfire continues to spread tonight. but firefighters say a nearby nuclear lab is safe from the flames. more on the progress in los alamos. >> reporter: the fire burning near the town of los alamos keeps growing. the firefighters say it is no longer threatening the nation's premier nuclear weapons laboratory. hundreds of employees of the los alamos national laboratory returned saturday to prepare it for business as usual. >> we're checking things like the -- air handling systems to make sure that the filters were not cut off by the smoke. >> the smoke, that is everywhere. it blankets the town of los alamos, emptied of their 12,000 residents, some have been in shelters for nearly a week. and fire officials can't say when they will be able to lift the evacuation order. >> we want all resources that are available since this is the number one fire priority in the

country. >> reporter: the fires blackened more than 113,000 acres, making it the largest in new mexico history. >> the unprecedented dryness just makes it so at risk. >> reporter: they are trying to protect what has not already been burned, on a land sacred to the indians. the fire already hurt the nation's water shed and culture sites. some were upset that the firefighters protected the laboratories at the expense of other areas. >> now that we see the focus was saving los alamos, what about us? the last fire, we're still not even recovered from the last fire. >> authorities admit the wild is so fire damaged it won't be able to handle the rainy season making floody nearly a sure thing. wjw eyewitness news. and new mexico's governor is calling on people to avoid using fireworks this holiday

weekend. she says that the conditions are just too dry. and a presidential scare, this afternoon, a small plane flew into a restricted zone around camp david where the first family is spending the holiday. the plane was intercepted and met by norad. they were met by local law enforcement for questions. and a beautiful start to the 4th of july weekend. looking live out there tonight, not a lot to complain about so far this weekend. a great night for a barbecue. how long will it last? more on the weather. >> it is an incredible stretch of weather, the end of the week leading up to today, we want to show you the doppler radar because we've seen the first signs of change, just an isolated shower or thunderstorm out in here. now here are some problems with the radar, you can 70 there at the national weather service, it can still pick up a couple of thunderstorms off to the west, hancock, berkeley, all of that is to the west, not a lot

happening, these chances will increase though as we head through the weekend. back to you. thank you. and a group of baltimore children get the chance to question michael vick about his involvement with dog fighting, the philadelphia eagles spoke to the kids at the football camp at the wood lawn high school. according to our partner, vick took the blame for getting in trouble and told the children he should have known better. he returned to the nfl last year after spending two years in federal prison. and a drop in test scores has baltimore school leaders running. now they're considering a big change that has some parents upset. more on the school watch report. >> reporter: gigi bar net has more. >> reporter: after three years of back-to-back games, baltimore school leaders saw an across the board dip in test scores this year, reading results dropped by a little more than three percentage points, and math scores falling more at nearly 5%.

now the question is how to get back on track. the answer may be here. >> we see the model that works in some of our schools, and the question is can we link it to particular grades. >> reporter: one expert wants a longer school week to begin for students in the fifth and 8th grades, he says that is just before students go off to meanwhile and high schools. and it is where the school leaders are seeing the biggest drop off. >> well, many, many of our kids, you need to stretch time in a way that allows us to -- dive deep into what some of the barriers to success might be. >> but will it work? >> the weekend family time, make it simple, extend the school year, add more days. >> parents say it is a good thing. >> absolutely, my children are going to summer school next week, so i have no problem with

them going on saturday. >> whether they go on saturday or not, parents want to know how the school leaders plan to pay for it. the doctor says that is a detail he is working on. i'm gigi bahaer schools has a longer school week and is one of the highest performing schools in the state. and it was a beautiful day for a trip to the farmer's market. but all the sunshine has local farmers worried. maryland is down an inch of rain for the year, nearly half just the past month. >> we have had 35 quarters of an inch of rain, so without irrigation we would be dead. >> well, the numbers are down, it is nowhere near a drought, which calls for an extended period without significant rainfall. coming up on wjw, kicked off the plane, the airport security that ruined one man's 4th of july vacation.

. the explosion happened overnight and nobody was hurt. some nearby mobile homes were damaged, though, by flying debris. and no vacation for the jurors in the casey anthony trial. they will hear closing arguments tomorrow and the judge wants them to deliberate on the 4th of july. prosecutors argumented that casey anthony killed her, but the defense attorneys argue she was killed in the pool. casey anthony faces the death penalty if convicted. and coming up, changing designed to help tired air traffic controllers. this comes in the wake of instances where they were found sleeping on the job. sick time can be used by those too tired to work. they can read or listen to overnight radio during the

overnight shifts. the union and everythings are developing new work schedules. and a case of mistaken identity, a person taken off the plane by customs agents. she was supposed to fly to the bahamas, but the customs agents took the man off the plane, they thought he was the man they were looking for but realized their mistake. >> he said i don't care what you do. put him on a truck, a flat bed, but get him back to the plane. >> well, lindsey missioned his flight and that was the only flight going to the bahamas, a customs official says that sometimes passengers are inconvenienced. and take a look at this, you can see a massive lightning bolt on the old sears tower. the building was not damaged but the same storm knocked out power to 10s of thousands of

gorgeous day outside. no complaints. >> we're talking about this, happy about it, yes, all the shots are so clear. there is not even any haze in the air, which is so not typical -- for a 4th of july weekend. now we do have some of the changes coming, but at least today it is fantastic outside. let's show you what is happening outside as far as the satellite radar. most of the day is spectacular, in the last couple of hours esaw a thunderstorm or two filing up between allegheny and washington counties. now we still could see a shower or thunderstorm as the winds happen through the night, the winds turning to the south, the front approaching the area. but not everybody is going to see that. the other thing happening with the southerly winds the temperatures are up. 87 degrees right now in baltimore. 80 in hagerstown. it was warm yesterday. and the dew points were very, very low. warm again today, the dew points back in the 50s at least. tomorrow, though, they will be back in the 60s, we'll feel the

muggy weather, and it will still be warm. we did top out at 93 for the high, the average is 86, almost the entire forecast, we'll be above the average. let's show you overall what is happening. out to the west it is getting a little bit closer. so the chance of showers and thunderstorms as we head through the evening hours, then tomorrow the front gets closer. you see there is not a lot to the front but it is still there. so tomorrow, scattered showers and thunderstorms. not everybody is seeing them. but monday, the front pushes off to the south. you see it is still in southern parts of maryland so close enough for a chance of showers and thunderstorms in baltimore, the better chance the further south you go, the front will stall there for tuesday. we'll see the same idea on tuesday, so the way that comes together for a forecast you see the humidity building tomorrow, continuing into the 4th of july. and with the front passing through scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, still the chance on monday, but not

all day. so out on the water, southwest winds, five to 10 knots, be more careful about looking for a thunderstorm. tomorrow, the isolated thunderstorm is possible, down to 66, a better chance tomorrow. we'll see highs, 91 degrees out there with clouds and showers and thunderstorms. still a chance on monday, high 90 degrees, and with the front off to the south. oh the chance on tuesday, get a little bit of a break, look how warm it remains this entire week, andrea? >> thank you bernadette. and hopefully the o's will have a good weekend. a good 4th of july weekend. >> they got off to a rough start last night but that doesn't mean that is the end of the world. o's, braves, we'll show you how they did in atlanta. it was not good at all. that and more your way just as soon as we get ,,,,,,,,,,,,
