. this is wjztv, wjzhd and wjz.com baltimore. from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now, it's complete coverage, it's wjz, maryland's news station. hello, everybody. we are following some breaking news tonight. violence break out as thousands gather downtown. a young child was rushed to the hospital after either being stabbed or shot. live to the inner harbor, mike. >> reporter: we have learned that that child was shot. that child was 4 years old. we have some video just from the scene. this is where there were dozens of police officers already stationed here with a command post. that child's parents were walking with him.

the little toddler started to cry. it turns out that little baby was shot in the leg or the groin area and is now being taken to johns hopkins children's center. we are also investigating a report of a stabbing just across the harbor here from where i'm standing at the mccormick and smiks. and there was a fight close to where i'm standing here. earlier we covered some of the higher notes of this celebration that's unfortunately been marred by violence. >> reporter: 1400 fireworks to celebrate the 235th birthday of the united states of america. >> bless this country. >> i just love america, man, it's beautiful. >> reporter: as the crowds watched the light show, police

were watching them. beefing up their visibility on the ground and going high-tech to track officers and maximize their force along with a network of cameras. police did act quickly after a disturbance. >> we hope that the visible number of officers. >> reporter: the celebration is one of baltimore's biggest, a red, white, and blue a salute. >> just to be here where the star spangled banner was written and that's why we're here actually. we wanted to celebrate our heritage right here. >> we're just blessed that they fought for us. >> reporter: it's also a massive undertaking, weeks of plans from security to crowd control to the computerized

the stars, be proud of our stripes and wave your making. we are following a developing story where crews launched a water rescue. a man is missing at a river. >> a viewer captured this photo of a boat. a man and woman were in the boat and both fell into the water. >> she was rescued by a passing boater and she was uninjured. the gentleman that was operating the boat is still missing and we are still conducting searches in the area that allow them to search a very large area in a very short amount of time without risking divers and the water being trapped via crab lines or other

debris that may be on the bottom of the river. >> reporter: this is the second accident in maryland waters in a matter of hours. a little boy drowned monday. he disappeared while swimming in about 4 feet of water. says his father rushed in to form a human chain. >> my dad felt something on his legs and picked him up. >> reporter: the boy was rushed to the hospital where he later died. >> it was very scare see. i couldn't imagine if that was one of my siblings. >> they should have their life vests on and keep an eye on them. >> reporter: just a few minutes ago natural resources police did release the name of that missing boater, 25-year-old james cain of arizona. he is presumed dead. jurors in the casey anthony

trial have not yet reached a verdict. they deliberated for the first time today. karen brown reports for wjz from orlando jo the jury deciding kasey anthony's fate deliberated for half a day and then went back to their hotel. >> you are not permitted to discuss this case while you were separated from this courthouse. >> they will be back tuesday to wade through more than a month of testimony and evidence. prosecutors wrapped up their case after displays these photos of anthony. they argued anthony didn't want to be a mom any more so she suffocated caylee with duct tape. >> that duct tape had to be on that skull before they

100 100th victim of 2011. >> i just want whoever did this to think you left my daughter without a father. >> reporter: 24-year-old christopher samuel served in the u.s. military. he did not have a criminal record. >> he always said he was going to take care of his family. he was never one to get in trouble. >> reporter: late tuesday night samuel was shot in the back. police believe it was a robbery because he was on his cell phone at the time of the murder. >> whoever he was on the phone with said, they said, christopher said, i don't have any money so if you're going to kill me you're not going to get anything. >> he will be missed and his legacy will live on. >> christopher was such a good man and people are going to miss him so much, including me.

the overall winner, joey chestnut. the 27-year-old is on a roll by taking home his 25th title. he inhaled 62 hot dogs in 52 minutes. that's over 20,000-calories or about 10 days of food. his world record is 58 in 10 minutes. that's like a hot dog every 10 seconds. i can't imagine how he feels tonight. >> pretty gross. more power to them. >> i think they split $20,000. >> good for them. okay. well, 4th of july the fireworks got off. we did have a couple of showers out there but the thunderstorms winding down as soon as that sun set and that allowed all the thunderstorms to die down throughout the area.

didn't stop most of the festivities. this is what we're seeing now. even the showers are starting to die down at this hour. we have had a couple of thunderstorms lingering. this one passed through st. michaels and cambridge. it's also winding down now. some strong thunderstorms that are now making their way out to the oceans. let's take you back. most of the day it was quiet. just some clouds out there, but then here were those thunderstorms. fortunately though, starting to quiet down. out still warm outside. 82 in dc and those dewpoints are up and the humidity levels are going to be high. 82 is where we topped out today. tomorrow probably a few degrees higher, just a couple. but with the high humidity an air quality alert has been issued. that could be extended later this week with the humidity

that is coming our way. the other reason we're going to be dealing with this is because we're still going to be dealing with this front. it will give rise to a couple of showers around thunderstorms and it's going to be close enough to us that we're still going to see that chance. but by wednesday there's a new front coming into the picture. it will kick out this front but it's going to come in with other showers. east winds of 5 knots. bay temperature, 80 degrees. tonight we are going down into the 60s. tomorrow, cloud and sunshine. about 90 for our high and it will be muggy. we hang with this warm muggy weather all week long. the chances of thunderstorms go up midweek as that new front comes our way, denise.
