he's the one that covered up an accidental drown, they actually agree with the jurors' decision based on the evidence. >> reporter: casey anthony began to cry as she heard the verdict. >> as to the charge of first- degree murder, we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: she broke down hugging her defense team when it was all over. >> i'm ecstatic for her and i want her to be able to grieve and grow and somehow get her life back together. >> reporter: it took a jury a little more than 10 hours to acquit anthony of the most serious charges, of first- degree murder, manslaughter and child abuse. then they unanimously decided they didn't want to talk to the media and explain their decision. >> folks lingered outside the courthouse for some time because this was not the outcome most of the people were expecting. when the verdicts were read, there was an audible gasp. >> reporter: customers at a

restaurant near the courthouse had a similar reaction. >> i was just like astounded. i couldn't believe they could be that wrong. i couldn't believe those people could make that decision. >> reporter: the defense built its case around the argument caylee's death was an accident, and that she drowned in the swimming pool. the prosecution tried to hammer away at the 25-year-old mother's credibility. they painted her as a liar and a woman who didn't want to be a mother any more. >> our mountain of evidence did not eliminate in the jury's view, every reasonable doubt. >> reporter: the jury did convict anthony of lying to the police during the investigation. is she'll be back in court thursday for sentencing. she faces a maximum of four years in prison but could walk away a free woman if the judge rules time served. >> legal experts say that it is almost certain that casey anthony will go free on thursday, her defense team saying this evening that they will push for that and as far as what's next for the anthony family, they are asking for their privacy so they can begin

independence day celebration,, including the shooting of a 4- year-old boy. >> it is simply outrageous that anyone would bring a weapon into downtown. >> reporter: moments later, police say this man, a person they're desperate to identify, used a broken bottle to stab. this is the victim's picture in a mugshot obtained online. the murder unfolded outside near pier 6. >> were it not for this stupid, senseless fight that got clearly out of control, and this unexplained incident, you know, we had deployment consist with what we thought we would need. >> reporter: police made 30 arrests, handled 20 curfew violations. >> you're going to have people that do things that are stupid and improper all over and you can't stop it. >> they ought to catch them and give them life.

shooting a kid? >> reporter: the commissioner says he's evaluating what worked and what didn't last night after violence marred what should have been a peaceful celebration. >> detectives have been working around the clock to assemble evidence and information about these incidents. we will find out who did this. >> and investigators are still looking at footage from the many city watch cameras in the area last night. there were 600 officers on the ground here during the fireworks show. reporting live at the inner harbor, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you mike. there have been 104 murders in baltimore city so far this year. posing as police. robbers pretend to be cops so this can break into a baltimore home. wjz is live, jessica kartalija explains it's a troubling trend for police want to stop. >> that's exactly right. tonight, baltimore city police are trying to figure out if this latest case is linked to two others. >> reporter: this tree-lined street in northwest baltimore is the latest crime scene in a

series of home invasions. >> individuals are impersonating police officers and going into homes looking for cash and jewelry. >> reporter: around 6:00 this morning, three suspects burst through the door of a home on garrison avenue. >> they identified themselves as baltimore police officers and bound and tied up their victims, took undisclosed amounts ofca. >> reporter: they snatched a wii game system and other electronics. >> i think that's crazy. i think we need to have more security. >> city police say one of two things could be happen hearing. either all three of these home invasions are linked or this latest home invasion is a copy- cat crime. >> what's different about this one than the last two is the individuals involved in this one had badges, they had badges around their necks, they had t- shirts. >> reporter: the other home invasions were in federal hill and this one in northeast baltimore, where three men impersonating police officers tied a couple up, then shot the

man. >> we are enormously concerned about this. this is an egregious violation of the trust that individuals place in the police and we are working very hard to try to catch them. >> reporter: police say the suspects appear to be in their early 30s and were wearing blue latex gloves. >> does it make you nervous? >> sure. it's close to me. i live right down there. >> city police tell us the suspects were wearing black t- shirts with the word police written in white across the back. they were also wearing either navy blue or black cargo pants. back to you. >> jessica thank you. police want anyone with information about these robberies to give them a call. stepping down, a controversial politician giving up her job but not just yet. mary's in the newsroom with the politician's change of heart. >> johnson announced she's resigning. she pleaded guilty to destroying evidence. she admitted flushing a check

down the toilet. johnson is married to former county executive jackson johnson who also pleaded guilty. at first, johnson said she had no plans to resign but now, she will leave office on july 31st. that's the last day before the council's recess. council members want johnson to resign immediately. they voted to take away her county car and cellphone. catherine few filed paperwork to run for mayor. we're still waiting to hear if carl stokes will join the race. jodie landers and frank conoway are also challenging the mayor in the democratic primary. the mayor is about to get more support as she tries to keep her job. she's already picked up the endorsements of the mayors. baltimore voters head to the polls on september the 13th. searching for a missing

boater. rescuers still have not found a man who went overboard in annapolis. wjz is live. this is the latest in a series of drownings this summer. >> fatal boating accidents. in fact, police say this is shaping up to be one of the deadliest years on the water. >> reporter: a wjz viewer captured this video of a boat spinning in circles minutes after ejecting their passengers. 25-year-old james can't know of pasadena is still missing. police are using divers and sonar to try to locate his body. >> it's a very wide area. we don't know exactly where the accident occurred at. >> reporter: that came the same day that a 6-year-old died after he went swimming with his young friends. >> i saw a little girl crying. she said i can't find him. >> reporter: his death, one of several in maryland waters since memorial day, including the death of a 19-year-old

soldier who drowned in the rapid waters of a creek in the rock state park and 14-year-old constant who died after her harness became tangled in sailing lines. police blame the weather for an increase in fatalities. >> we didn't have much of a spring. it went right from winter straight to 90-degree days in may and as soon as we hit those hot, dry days, people turn to the water for relief and we're seeing an increased number of accidents. >> reporter: in fact, so far, this year, 13 people have already died in boating accidents alone. that's higher than most previous years and police point out we're only halfway through the summer. >> that's right. police want to make sure that boaters remember no matter what age you are, you should have a life jacket on. they say you also want to make sure you have some constant communication, with either a two-way radio or cellphone. swimmers need to make sure they're swimming in an area with a lifeguard and never leaving their group of friends.

wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, thank you. police say they will continue to search the river for the missing boater until dark tonight and then resume their search for the morning. divers in pennsylvania still cannot find a missing boater from western maryland. he disappeared saturday when his boat capsized. crews have run into problems looking for the man from cumberland because there are so many other boats in the water. police have not identified the victim as yet. another hot and steamy day in the baltimore area. it's a little cloudy outside. meteorologist bernadette woods is here with a look at what we can expect for the rest of the evening. >> we do have a couple of thunderstorms. this is what you've been experiencing about the past two hours. you can see all of these around the delaware beaches. we have had a couple on the maryland beaches also. as far as our temperatures go, we have warmed up this afternoon. we are coming in at 91 degrees right now, 90 in d.c., 80 in

cumberland and this warm weather is going to continue. we'll have that forecast, coming up. if the ocean city beach felt a little crowded, it wasn't your imagination. tourism officials estimate more than 330,000 people visited ocean city over the holiday weekend. that would make the second largest city in the state behind baltimore. the population in ocean city yesterday was just over 354,000. that's a new record for independence day. >> it's too bad it can't stay that way. now, it's going to drop right back down. still to come on wjz eyewitness news, a game of cat and mouse. a popular professor murdered, the suspect still on the run. the reason they simply can't arrest him. in trouble again. the new accusations against dominique strauss-kahn and the reason it took the woman years to come forward. i'm alex demetrick. coming up, keeping stink bugs out of maryland wine. that story as eyewitness news continues.

montgomery county police say know who killed a popular american university professor. they just can't arrest him. we have the problems that police are having. >> sue marcum was murdered in her home last october. now, the suspect is apparently taunting police in mechanisms

from his mexican hideout. >> reporter: jorge landeros is known as a stock trader, yoga teacher and poetet. investigators say he had a relationship with a popular accounting professor named sue marcum, and was the sole beneficiary of her $500,000 life insurance policy. they also believe he did this. >> she was hit somewhere on her body. she was also choked to death, according to the medical examiner. >> reporter: that was last october at marcum's house. at first, the case had all the signs of a burglary gone bad. police say there were signs of forced entry, signs of a struggle. a teenager was arrested later in a teenager was arrested later in the evidence built, it led them away from that teenager who's no longer a suspect and straight to jorge landeros. according to an affidavit, landeros gave a dna sample to police in el paso, texas, a

sample that matches one on what's believed to be the murder weapon. but then investigators say he skipped across the border to juarez, mexico. there's now an interpol arrest warrant for him and he's been named as the only suspect in marcum's murder. landeros has not only refused to come back to the u.s. but it appears he's taunting police. the washington post obtained a recent e-mail from landeros to an detective who asked to meet him. of course, you are invited to meet me a great cafe and restaurant in juarez, and we can talk shop all you want. it's best if you come on sunday. we can have brunch. it will, of course, by my treat. >> how frustrated are you at that? >> we believe he's using the shield of an international border to delay and slow this process. we would like justice to start, have his day in court. >> in his conversation with the washington post, landeros denied killing marcum saying he

wasn't in the u.s. at the time of her murder. u.s. authorities say they are working on an extradition deal with mexico. police need your help finding a man wanted for a violent attack. police say terrell hit his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter. he's accused of kidnapping his girlfriend's son. the child was returned unharmed. detectives think he may be driving a brown oldsmobile. if you've seen the car, give police a car. back to work. maryland lawmakers could return to annapolis this fall for a special session. they are expected to call a special session for the middle of october. that will give lawmakers a chance to redraw congressional districts. they do it every 10 years after the census results come out. those pesky stink bugs are at it again.

they've found a new target, vineyards. it may be a foreign invader but it has domestic tastes. >> reporter: grapes are just coming on the maryland vineyards and so are brown stink bugs. >> they're out there. the one grape that it poked a hole in starts to rot and then it affects all the x-rays around. >> reporter: the stink bugs are from asia and have no natural predator to control them and right now they are busy reproducing. small clutches of eggs become immature nymphs. >> fruits, vegetables, berries, even blossoms, it affects all crops. the only thing we haven't seen it on is kale and rhubarb. >> it is a devastating pest. it's probably one of the biggest pests we've had in the united states or in this region for probably 40 years. >> reporter: early detection is critical. in vineyards, that means more

anne harbor. >> it's a great day. >> it really is and it's a beautiful day out for the most part. we had some of those clouds come in but overall pretty nice summer day outside. first warning doppler radar the one exception we've been seeing the last couple of hours beaches, they're fluctuating going up and down. we do have some of those out there and we will see that for the next few hours. last night we still had some of those showers. fortunately, the thunderstorms died down into showers so they didn't affect too many of the fireworks planned around here. all of that got out of here overnight. leading to some clouds building up, take a look, most of the thunderstorms this afternoon. there's just not much of a wind out there and that's why there's nothing pushing those thunderstorms around. temperature-wise, we're in the 90s again this afternoon, 90 in d.c. 82 even with some

thunderstorms around in ocean city and 90 degrees in cumberland. we topped out at 92 this afternoon for our high and look, the average just keeps on climbing. 87 is where we sit right now. for tomorrow, the heat's going to be out once again, the humidity relatively high and because of that, we're going to see air quality alerts go back into effect from noon until 8:00. this is code orange to all of the metro regions, baltimore, and philly. that's something we're continuing to monitor because the temperatures will continue to run high. now, the front has slowed down. this is the next front that's going to come our way. it will eventually kick the stalled out front out of here but it brings its own round of showers. there's a chance for a thunderstorm to pop, and here comes the next front. scattered thunderstorms with it, and some of those thunderstorms may linger two saturday. we'll be keeping an eye on that

thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about. this time a french writer accuses dominique strauss-kahn of attacking her. >> reporter: banan filed a criminal complaint in paris against dominique strauss-kahn. she says strauss-kahn tried to rape her during an interview in 2003. banan, who was 22 at the time of the alleged attack, talked about it on french tv four years ago but the producers beeped out the alleged attacker's name. banan says she never pressed charges because her mother who was an official in strauss- kahn's party, convinced her not to go to authorities. banan's lawyer says it was attempted rape and that prosecutors will determine if there's enough evidence to file charges. the former chief has already called banan's story imaginary and promises to sue for

slander. this all comes as the sexual assault case in new york appears to be falling apart. prosecutors are questioning the credibility of the hotel maid who accused strauss-kahn of attempted rape and reportedly dropped the charges altogether. strauss-kahn had been a leading candidate for french president and as the case crumbled, supporters began plotting his political comeback but the latest allegations could put his future in question again. wjz eyewitness news. >> debate in new york -- the newspaper called her aprostitute and hooker in recent articles. jurors decided casey anthony did not kill her younger daughter. some new reaction to the verdict everyone is talking about. mary? >> the case has gripped the country for years and jurors

acquitted her of the most serious charges. anthony cried in court as the jury cleared her in the death of her 2-year-old daughter. they only convicted her for lying to police. after more than a month of testimony, it took the jury less than 11 hours to decide there wasn't enough evidence to convict anthony. >> the best feeling that i have today is that i know i can go home and my daughter will ask me what did you do today? and i can say i saved a life. >> we're disappointed with the verdict today and surprised, because we know the facts, and we put in absolutely every piece of evidence that existed. >> anthony will be sentenced on thursday. she is facing up to four years in jail but most legal experts don't expect her to spend any more time behind bars. >> none of the jurors wanted to talk after the verdict was announced. some help for police. the fbi is getting involved in

the giddens case. police are pretty sure the body they found is the 27-year-old giddings. today, police send some evidence to the fbi crime lab in virginia. detectives are also searching the storm drainage system, looking for clues. giddings was in georgia after graduating from law school. it's back to the drawing board for indiana police investigating the disappearance of a college student. a badly decomposed body is not her. now, police are trying to figure out who the body belongs to and where she is. now, hiring. baltimore city looking for some new recruits. the city started offering tests today for people who would like to join the police department. if you missed today's tests, there are still several more over the next few weeks. you have to be at least 20 and a half years old. the salary starts at $40,000 and you get 14 paid holidays.

to see when the next test will be offered, go to www.wjz.com and click on the news tab. roger clemens is on for a while in federal court in washington, d.c. as jill brown reports to wjz, clemens is accused of lying to congress about using steroids during his playing career. >> reporter: roger clemens left u.s. district court after a pretrial hearing. inside the courtroom, the superstar pitcher learned that his case may get some help. the judge says he may not allow damaging testimony about steroids from clemens' former teammates. it would be a win for the baseball great who is facing six felony charges. >> let me be clear, i have never taken steroids. >> reporter: prosecutors say clemens lied under oath when he testified before congress in 2008. their star witness will be brian macknamy, clemens' former trainer. >> i told the truth about steroids. i injected those drugs into the body of roger clemens at his direction. >> reporter: he claims he even

kept the used needles, which will be key evidence at trial. some of clemens' former teammates, including felly pitcher andy pettitte admit they received injections. >> but the jury may never hear that testimony from pettitte and other players. the judge says he will likely not allow it because it could unfairly influence the jury. >> reporter: clemens is the latest baseball player to face a jury. earlier this year, barry bonds likely avoided prison time when he was convicted on just one count of ubinstruction, but bonds' trainer refused to testify, choosing to go to jail instead. legal experts say the case against clemens is stronger. he could spend years in prison if a jury finds him guilty. >> in washington, wjz eyewitness news. >> jury selection will begin tomorrow and the trial is expected four to six weeks. time now for a quick look at some stories you'll find tomorrow morning. how to find healthy foods on the board walk when you go to the beach this summer.

a wild theft caught on tape at a gas station. a mob of about 50 teenagers ransacked the station, snatching chips, beverages and entire display cases before running out of the store. police think that same mob also attacked a group of people and robbed them just a few minutes after the looting. they are on the loose tonight. a british tabloid is accused of hacking into a missing teenager's cellphone

after she disappeared. the newspaper allegedly broke into doweller's cellphone and deleted several messages from her voice mail. police say it gave them false hope that she was still alive. her family plans to sue the paper. a sad end to the search for a missing member of the purdue university football team. police fulled shawn madison's body from the water this morning. he was last seen sunday. friends say they had all been drinking. he was a walk-on runningback on the football team. a dramatic scene in china as more than two dozen people are rescued from a washed-out bridge. the villagers got stuck. rescue crews managed to pull them to safety but officials say as many as 200 others are stranded in nearby towns until that road is repaired. it is back to work for one of the victims in tucson

arizona. 65-year-old ron barber returned to congress woman gabrielle giffords' office today. he was wounded in the january shooting massacre. six people were also killed. barber has spent the past six months undergoing intense physical therapy. he is working part-time for now. a woman in mexico is caught trying to smuggle her husband out of jail in a suitcase. guards discovered the man in the woman's suitcase. the man is serving a 20-year sentence for possession of illegal weapons. police have arrested the woman and charges are pending. >> i understand cirque du soleil is offering him a job. a suitcase? wow. we have a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. >> the final flight of the space shuttle means the end of a career for many nasa workers

another warm summer day as the temperature climbs into the night. will it stay this warm tomorrow and the rest of the week? meteorologist bernadette woods is here with the first warning weather forecast. >> we're going to take a look at tomorrow and yes, tomorrow actually similar to today. it will be a mix of sunshine and clouds out there and a chance for a shower or thunderstorm as we get into the low 90s, close to 90 for our high. then the humidity starts to crank a little bit more thursday into friday as the new storm system comes our way. it will increase our chances for scattered showers and storms. by saturday, we could still see a few lingering around area before the storm gets out of here on sunday. weather problems may push back the final launch of the space shuttle program. atlantis is scheduled to plast off at 11:26 friday morning but there is a 60% chance of rain or thunderstorms. an estimatessed 1 million spectators are expected at cape canaveral.

are asking that the sessions be stopped until they're allowed back in. hall-of-famer carl elser one of the ex-players whose name is on the complaint seen here attending earlier talks. they are fighting for better healthcare and pensions in the new collective bargaining session. the nfl commissioner and union leader did not attend today's talks in new york, according to reports. now, lawyers are reportedly working on specifics for now with goodell and smith scheduled to return to the talks later this week. in baseball, the orioles have run into some desperate times as they continue their roadtrip in texas tonight and they're counting on another unknown pitcher and they're sitting down one of their disappointing hitters to make room on the roster. left fielder luke scott was placed on the 15-day disabled list to give him time to rest his shoulder. he's dealing with a torn labrum in the shoulder. scott has two hits in his last

mcphail referred to it as a step backward. golfer tiger woods would like to take a step forward with his career but an injured leg is keeping him from doing that and tiger announced he will not play the british open. he says he will miss his second consecutive major on the advice of doctors as he continues to heal from injuries. we last saw woods in competition in may after just nine holes, he walked off the course because of pain. tiger says he's not sure when he'll play again. finally, excellent goal from the women's world cup in germany, ellen white gets her foot on the ball for a perfectly placed shot. she was on the run between two defenders from a good distance out. this would get the ball rolling in england's direction and a 2- 0 win over japan up and in.
