out of control, violence erupts in the middle of baltimore's july 4th celebrations leaving one man dead, a four-year-old shot. >> the growing concerns over safety downtown after a family friendly evening turned chaotic. hello everyone i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch, here is what people are talking about. >> it was supposed to be a night of family fun, but in the end, a man is dead and a little

boy was shot. hellgren has the story. >> reporter: you're about to see a picture of the boy. his family was happy because he was able to walk today and he is getting treatment. police tried to calm the crowds. several fights broke out at the inner harbor this one as god bless america played in the loud speaker. this is a mug shot that wjz obtained of a 26-year-old man that was killed after he was stabbed. >> these people that engage in these terrible and senseless acts of violence are cowards and we're not going to tolerate their cowardly behavior. >> reporter: a 4-year-old was

shot in the leg with a stray bullet. >> just an inch more and it would have hit the main artery and it would have been a worse than it is. that's why they don't want to remove it. he was just shot yesterday, he was up walking around already. he's a strong little man. >> reporter: surveillance cameras did not capture any part of the shooting. police say they made 30 arrests and handled 30 curfew arrests. >> most people are out here for a good celebration, a lot of people probably won't come back next year. >> reporter: police are still evaluating whether they could have done anything to prevent the mayhem. >> caylon mason's aunt says she is just happy that her nephew is alive. and as you heard her say, that

bullet was so close to doing mayor damage. >> reporter: if you have any information on any of these crimes you are asked to call city police. >> casey anthony did not kill her daughter, that is a verdict today from a florida jury. most of the surprise of the many who have been following this headline grabbing case. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: 25-year-old casey anthony cried and hugged her defense team. the jury took fewer than 11 hours to find her not guilty of murder and two other charges related to her daughter caylee's death. casey's parents ducked out of court right after the verdict was read. >> we're happy for casey, there are no winners in this case. caylee has passed on far, far too soon. >> reporter: the corner never determined the cause of caylee's case but did rule it a

homicide. the jury found the prosecution just didn't bear the burden of proof. >> i never ever criticize a jury, theirs is the task of deciding what to believe. >> reporter: none of the 12 jurors were willing to speak to the media. while casey anthony was clear in the criminal justice system, many in the court of public opinion just don't agree with the jury. >> it's just unfathomable that they came back with that decision. >> i think the jury came back too soon. >> reporter: some legal experts think she will not serve any additional time. >> there's no reason to keep her longer. >> for time already served. >> that's exactly true. anthony has already spent three years in jail. the defense is hoping she can rebuild her life, starting this week. an attorney for the anthony

family issued a statement asking for privacy while they quote, decide the best way to move forward. a group of bandits strikes a home claiming to be officers. around 6:00 this morning, two men broke into a home. police are not sure if the same people are behind all three crimes. the search for a boater who fell in the river will resume in the morning. this video shows the boat circling in the water shortly after james cane and a woman were tossed into the water. a boater rescued the woman by the man is still missing. dnr police say the weather is a factor. >> we didn't have much of a spring. it went right from winter to 89- degree days in may. as soon as we hit those hot dry days people turned to the water

for relief. and we're seeing an increased number of accidents. also tonight we learned the name of the 6-year-old who drowned at sanity point state park. police say sequan kennedy was swimming with friends when he went under: he was taken to the hospital but did not survive. leaving office, found hiding thousands of dollars in prescribes in her bra. tonight leslie johnson steps down from her seat. less than a week after vowing to remain in office, leslie johnson handed in her registration nation tuesday. she issued a statement which said in part, -- handed in her resignation tuesday. she issued a statement which said in part -- i again apologize for my mistake unquote. fellow council members had been pressuring her to step down after she pled guilty last week to destroying evidence in a

federal corruption probe involving her husband. former county executive jack johnson. leslie johnson admitted to destroying a $100,000 check from a developer to her husband and hiding nearly $80,000 in cash in her underwear as the fbi raided her home. >> i made a mistake for which i today accepted responsibility for my conduct. >> reporter: johnson's husband also admitted his role in shaking down wealthy developers and lining his own pockets with the cash. he faces more than a decade in prison. leslie johnson could serve a year behind bars. johnson's resignation is effective july 3rd. today council members decided to take away her staff, as well as the use of her car and cell phone. one candidate joins the race for baltimore mayor while another bows out. tonight wjz has learned that councilmen carl stokes is out.

spokesperson told wjz he was going to file tonight before the deadline but he never showed up. four others are challenging current mayor stephanie blake for the democratic nomination. there's only one democrat in the race, vicki anne hardy. people will soon be paying money to the union even though they're not a member. a new law allows afscme to accept money from nonmembers. if you were down in the ocean you had plenty of company. they had the busiest fourth of july in a decade. adam may is at the coast, he explains why the big jump in visitors. >> reporter: they said it was a

combination of good weather, marketing and an improving economy. >> reporter: it was hard to find a good spot on the beach. ocean city had the busiest independent day weekend since 2003. >> how was it like trying to get in into a restaurant this weekend? >> it was horrible. >> reporter: compared to last year the number of visitors as of may has jumped almost 70,000. >> it's looking pretty good. hopefully the town keeps filling up. >> reporter: the good news for maryland drivers is that not all of these visitors are using the bay bridge. more and more people are coming through delaware as ocean city continues increasing its out of state market and pennsylvania, new york and new jersey. >> it's rodney, i'm out to rescue the entire east coast and bring them to ocean city maryland. >> reporter: the mayor says tv adds like this appear to be paying off. hotel revenues so far this year are also up more than 10%. >> i think we've positioned ourselves well in the marketplace. looks like this is going to be a better year. >> reporter: so what keeps people coming back? >> the beaches are nice.

say it's the third attack in their neighborhood in the last week but no arrests have been made. police in montgomery county say they can't arrest a man who they say killed a university professor to mark them. they say jorge landeros is hiding in mexico. sue larcum was killed last week. they say landeros made investments with with larcum and was the sole beneficiary on a life insurance policy. warm temperatures and calm gulf waters have given reasons to believe others missing will be found. >> i'm going with my gut feeling. i know he's some where but i don't think that he's doing

destroy your wine before its time. >> reporter: grapes are just coming on in maryland vineyards and so are brown stink bugs. >> yeah, they're out there. they're out there. >> reporter: eric alan of wine cellars hasn't seen a lot yet but it doesn't take many to create damage. >> the one grape that it poked the hole in starts to rot then it affects all the grapes around it. >> reporter: because the stink bugs are from asian they have no natural predator to control them and right now they are busy reproducing. small clutches of eggs becoming nymphs with a taste for almost everything maryland grows. >> fruits, vegetables, berries, blossoms, even bark. the only thing we haven't seen them on is rubard and kale. >> reporter: in vineyards that

so he had to go some where else. nice evening bernadette. >> weather wise yes. it's a beautiful evening out there. it's very warm still. we have an isolated thunderstorms that we're tracking. let's go to doppler radar and show you what's going on. most of the state is completely quiet. we've seen this thunderstorms make its way basically from north eastern parts of the city up toward chase and terry hall. one formed over townsend, one over essex and it's all been drifting to the east. it's all we can find out at this point. let's switch it over and show you that earlier we did have a couple of thunderstorms across the beaches. those fired up and they just didn't do much of anything. there's the stationary front on top of the station. it's shut off our wind but as far as temperatures go, they went up this afternoon. it's still 80 degrees in

baltimore. 84 in dc. the dewpoints are climbing up tonight as they usually do. they're going to stay a little higher. those humidity levels are going to climb. we did top out at 92 for the high today. we're going to be above that for the next few days and because of that and the humidity levels climbing, there is code orange air quality alert for most of the area during the day tomorrow from noon until 8:00. you can see that's all of the dc metro area. straight up through baltimore and through the philly metro area. here's the stationary front, not much left to it. but you see this front just off to the northwest. that's the next one moving our way. and how this works out is it's eventually going to bring in

until they are allowed back into the discussion. the players are fighting for better health care. tigers woods is missing his second straight major, hasn't played competitively since may and is not sure when he's going to play again. thomas lavay won't be playing in the british open but his excuse is not so good. that's him getting doused with champane when he won. he ran a victory lap and jumped into a lake on the golf course. he broke his leg on the leap. levet announced that the accident will keep him out of the open. when they say break a leg they don't mean in a leap.
