the airports. >> police raced to the bwi parkway, near the airport. a worker in this speed camera vehicle says a man came out of the woods and went on the attack. >> he said that the individual went to the rear window of the jeep and began tapping on the rear window with a shotgun. the witness was obviously frightened at this point and began blowing his horn. he said the individual then came around to the front of the truck and began striking the front windshield with his hammer. >> reporter: they screamed, going back into the woods. >> reporter: police officers armed with rifles are currently keeping an eye on the woods in the bwi hotel district. over here at the hotels, the number of shuttle buses have come to a grinding halt because so many roads are shut down. >> we were just trying to get back to work. but doesn't look like we're going to be successful. >> reporter: police examined numerous vehicles in the area, including this one we spotted and showed police. it's decorated with anti- government phrases and a man of

the area was in the front seat. >> we have a rather large area that is being searched right now. so we want to cover every possibility here. >> reporter: 295 is closed for 3 1/2 hours, frustrating drivers. >> what do you make of that? >> make of it? >> they shut down a major highway, looking for the guy, which is all fine. but it seems like a lot of extensive overkill to me. >> we just learned a few moments ago that police did rule out that vehicle that said tyranny to america. they have ruled that out as being connected to this incident. we have a chopper over the scene. you can see that the speed camera has been moved out of this area. they have taken that to a state facility. for repairs. they are checking the speed camera itself to see if it got a picture of the suspect's face. we can tell you that the suspect is described as a white male. he is in his 'isicts -- in his 60s, about 5'8." and no facial hair. reporting live, adamy ma, wjz

-- adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> the incident did not have an impact on flights at bwi marshall. in less than 24 hours, casey anthony could walk free. now we're learning what may have prompted the jury's decision. karen brown reports for wjz, from orlando, florida. >> reporter: people are already lining up to get a seat for casey anthony's sentencing. many can't believe she was cleared of murdering her daughter, caylee. >> she's probably going to take this to her grave. maybe someday she'sing go to wag -- she's going to wake up and say, i gotta come forward. >> russell heckler was an alternate juror. >> it was the right decision. >> he says the prosecution didn't show caylee was murdered. >> they didn't show us how caylee died. no one could show that. >> reporter: heckler believes there was some sort of horrific accident. >> reporter: overall, i think the family knows a lot more than what came out at the trial.

>> reporter: the judge will sentence casey anthony on four misdemeanor charges on lying to police. she's already spent nearly three years in jail. so many legal experts believe predict she'll be set free for time already served. >> she'll be taken to a location and apparently at her designation in central florida. >> reporter: it's not clear if anthony's parents will help their daughter. >> the family dynamics are now completely in upheaval. >> this is a girl who doesn't own a car or pair of shoes or anything. where is she going to go? >> reporter: casey implicated her father, saying he staged a cover-up. the parents say the verdict was fair, but they have yet to speak to their daughter. in orlando, florida, wjz eyewitness news. >> anthony was convicted of four counts of lying to investigators. each count carries a maximum sentence of one year. tonight, baltimore is still dealing with the fallout of

independence day shooting. wjz is live in winchester, virginia, where mike hellgren spoke exclusively with one of the families touched by this. >> i just spoke to the family of the man who was murdered, who was stabbed in the neck with way a bottle. they say he's the type of man they want to attract to baltimore's inner harbor. he's a tourist to spend money. this is a park he used to take his little girl to here in virginia. they have outrage here and they have definite concerns over security. >> reporter: joe calo's family is still reeling from his murder. the 26-year-old was visiting baltimore when police say this man stabbed him to death with a broken bottle. in an exclusive interview with wjz, his loved ones pleaded with his killer. >> when you're going to get in a fist fight, you get up and

shake and go on. no need in shooting, stabbing and killing folks. just ain't no need for that. >> calo, who is from alabama, had just visited his 1-year-old daughter in virginia before he headed to baltimore. >> you know what? [ crying ] i was there when his motor found out. [ crying ] and... my little girl is not going to have a dad. she had him for a year. that's not long enough. >> reporter: his killing was part of a string of violence that included a shooting of a 4- year-old by a stray bullet that hit him in the leg. and little caven has been released from the hospital. we're told he was walking last night. he will recover from this. but mr. callow will not. his life is gone. his family says that the city of baltimore is preparing to work with them on paying to have the body moved back to

alabama. reporting live in winchester, virginia, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. if you know anything about either of these incidents, you're asked to contact city police. you can remain anonymous. a plane flipped over at martin state. but thankfully, nobody is hurt. police say a student pilot landed and lost control of his plane. sky eye chopper 13 flew over the airport, shortly after it happened. the runway was closed for about an hour. the student was taken from middle river flight services. new information tonight about the man charged with secretly videotaping women in their anne arundel county home. denise is in the newsroom to explain what happened in 40 today. >> a crofton man had just pleaded guilty to 10 charges after he was caught with videotapes of naked women. police arrested 35-year-old charles novak in december, when a weapon caught him sitting inside a car in her garage. officers searched the area and found him with a video camera,

and several videos showed him changing clothes. novak was sentenced to the maximum of 47 years, with all but 10 years suspended. he also received five years' probation, and he must register as a sex offender. >> all right, denise, thank you. wjz was in court. we'll have reaction to the plea and sentencing all new tonight at 6:00. tonight, baltimore's mayoral race is set, minus one popular pick who dropped out at the last minute. pat warren has more on what to expect in the coming weeks. >> hi, kai. hello, everybody. councilman stokes has dropped out of the election to run for his own council seat. but that still leaves six people in the running for mayor. and six is a lot for voters to velt. -- vet. >> reporter: mayor stephanie rawlings-blake wins an endorsement today. >> we don't always agree. but it's like being in a family. you might have disagreement or squabbles.

time to rebuild, just focus. and let's get back in here and make it happen. >> reporter: pastor sean bell says the sanctuary and executive offices are destroyed. a hair salon and cafe set to open this fall have severe smoke damage. thankfully, no one was injured when the fire ripped through the building at 4:00 a.m. on june 26th. >> we, as a people, not only need to be focused, but as a community, we need to watch out for each other. but it also tells us through tragedy, god will give us victory. >> reporter: the pastor tells us, the investigation is still ongoing. still unclear whether this was an electrical fire or arson. contractors say it could be 8 months before the building is restored. services are being held at fort worth elementary. >> let's not cry out of this. let's stand up and be the church that god has called us to be in this community. >> reporter: a special fundraiser will take place this sunday at 8:00 at bethel a.m.e.

church. all do donations may be made through sun trust bank. >> church services will continue at fort worthington elementary while the search is church is being built. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the traffic with kristy breslin. so far, as the beltway goes, we're still seeing brake lights on the west side of the inner loop. that's from baltimore national pike, to liberty road. drive time, about 15 minutes. over on the north side inner loop, also slows down from charles street to providence road. average speed in that direction, about 45 miles an hour. 70, westbound, no improvement there. bumper to bumper from 29 to marriottsville road. and the harrisburg expressway, sluggish in the northbound direction. as far as accidents go, 195 westbound, an accident there at 95. and a couple of them in baltimore city. hillen road alt 33rd. holiday street, at saratoga. also east north avenue at st. paul. let's take a live look.

neighborhood, patience has finally paid off. and other streets are getting resurfaced. >> we paid sufficient taxes. we've all received those tax bills the other day. and now we're getting something as a result of it. >> a lot of cracks and weathering. you can see the grass growing up through the streets. and it's just an indication that the neighborhood was going down. so by resurfacing on the streets, we see that baltimore cares for lock raven. >> reporter: the city says by buying the new paver, not only are more city streets getting more attention, but it is also keeping city residents employed. >> reporter: resurfacing projects used to mainly be completed by contractors. and paving has increased 60% over last year. >> reporter: i'm really happy that there are timeless when we can take the resources we already have and show that they can be more effective. by purchasing the right capital equipment. >> you can make the house look good. but the street looks turned in. that makes a house.

for golf, except when they pull you off of it for thunderstorms. we havain ra -- have rain that has been running along a stalled front. there's one round of thunderstorms that went through earlier, all along the beaches. here comes the next storm out of virginia. and you can see really bright colors on the south side of this. that indicates some severe weather we have been seeing to the south. for us, this top edge is just rain. do you see thunderstorms starting to build up in here? and farther south, stronger thunderstorms? they are moving off to the northeast. but it looks like the worst of it will pass off to the south. so we'll keep an eye on that for you. switch it over and show you for most of us, we had some clouds to deal with. then sunshine came out. take a look at rounds of rain and thunderstorms. look what they've done to the temperatures. 77 now. patuxent. spin and 79 -- 79 in ocean city. whereas, it's 90 in the mountains, where people go for the cooler weather. here in baltimore. 88 now. so far today, our high has been

88 degrees. and you can see the average is 87. so once again, we are above that average. now, as far as the air quality alert, we have seen this the past couple of days. code orange. and tomorrow, temperatures in the low 90s. we'll see that also once again. but they've stayed off the southern side of d.c. with that alert. here's the next storm moving our way. and here's the one moving that the national hurricane center is watching. this could develop into something more. now, if that happens, we'll let you know about that. but this is how all of it comes at this time. we still have the solid front to deal with. but it will get a kick out of here because of the next front moving our way. but with the next front, another round of scattered showers and storms. now, that will eventually start to pull away. but while it's still hanging around, friday into saturday, that disturbance south of florida is going to be moving east up the coast. as it does, it will interact

contracted by the state's contract association. no shots were fired. no one was injured. wjz is live. we'll have a live update new at 6:00. also in anne arundel county, an elderly woman is killed in a car crash, after someone runs a red light. police say the 70-year-old 70- year-old arnold woman was killed. two other people were hurt. the crash is still being investigated. the federal documents show exxon mobil released inaccurate information about the time it took to stop an oil spill in the yellowstone river. vic is in the newsroom with details about the company's response time. vic? >> exxon claimed it only took 30 minutes to seal the leaky pipeline. the department of transportation says the pipeline was not fully shut down for 56 minutes after the break occurred on friday. 42,000 gallons. crude oil spilled into the

yellowstone river. as the river crests, it's sending more oil downstream into mashes and ponds. -- marshes and ponds. exxon says close to 70 people are working on the cleanup. the cause of the pipeline's failure remains under investigation. but investigators believe erosion exposed a line to damaging debris. a new terror warning for airports around the country. the u.s. government said some terroristless are considering surgically implanting explosives into bodies to carry out attacks on planes. authorities say al qaeda has been recruiting agents to help them figure out how to get around security equipment. people traveling to the u.s. may experience additional screening because of that threat. the list of people targeting britain's hacking scandal is growing. this is accused of hacking into phones. charlie d'agata reports for wjz from london. lawmakers are now getting involved. a british tabloid may have hacked into the phones of a

missing 13-year-old girl and suicide bombing families. investigators are looking into whether jawrnlists at rupert murdoch's news of the world, listened into kes operate conversations families had with police after the 2005 attacks. it also tapped into the account of missing 13-year-old millie doweller, not only listening to her voice mail, but deleting messages from frantic messages. the activity on the phone gave her family hope that she was still alive. >> this is disgusting, disgraceful. there are no words to describe how awful it is to the parents. >> reporter: the new hacking allegations are infuriating the british public. prompting an emergency government session and calls for an immediate investigation. >> we're talking about murder victims, potentially terrorist victims, having their phones hacked into. it is absolutely disgusting. >> when the scandal first broke, the targets were mainly

celebrities like mick jagger, eric clapton, gwyneth paltrow, and hugh grant. >> i think there is a national revulsion here about what they did. >> reporter: at the center of the controversy is rebecca brooks who headed up the tabloid for years and is now in charge of murdoch's british news corporation. murdoch said she will continue to lead his company, despite calls for her resignation. the paper is already taking a hit. several companies have pulled their ads. in london, charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> police have already begun to look into evidence that the newspaper paid off officers in return for information. former boston mob boss, james whitey bulger pleads not guilty on 19 murder charges. bulger has been on the run for 16 years. the fbi arrested him in santa monica, california, where he had been listening with his girlfriend. the 81-year-old had been ordered held without bail. prosecutors say they expect a month-long trial with as many as 40 witnesses. defense lawyers make

another push to have sexual assault charges dropped against dominique strauss-kahn. attorneys for the former imf chief say they have had a productive meeting today. prosecutors disclosed they had uncovered credibility issues with the hotel maid who had accused strauss-kahn of assault. in the meantime, that paper is accusing them of assault. a presidential town hall meeting on the internet. president obama uses twitter to answer questions. most of those questions were about jobs and the economy. >> reporter: president obama took his town hall meeting to twitter. he joined twitter cofounder jack dorsey to tackle questions sent in through the popular social media website. >> all right. i think i have done this properly. >> reporter: the white house invited 30 of its twitter followers to be part of the audience. the site chose eight journalists.

baseball's all-star break arrives next week. sports director mark viviano joins us now. it has been a rough week for the o's. right, mark? >> it has. but it's hard to convince long- suffering fans. as we look to be what seems to be a rerun for the o's. in june, they swoon. in july, they die. they test the patience of each the most optimistic fans. the o's look to salvage a win in texas last night. mitch atkins made his first- ever orioles start. allowed just one run. struck out four batters. texas tallied 4-2, the final. o's have lost 4-2 in a road trip.
