hi. i'm kai jackson. mary is off today. here's what people are talking about. severe weather is moving across now. and there are several flash flood warnings. let's go right to bob turk and meteorologist tim williams, tracking it all in first warning weather. bob? >> we've seen some very heavy storms last night. some areas getting 3, 3 1/2 inches of rain. some areas a lot less. but right now, a general heavier rain moving into the region. take a look at the red light frontal boundary. generally moving across country, maryland. one little heavy hiccup near perry hall. south of the city, you see some heavy showers showers and thunderstorms moving into howard county and a.a.

county. from parkton to liberty county, heavy shower activity. downpours all over the place, where you can see there's very, very bright colors. that's where we're seeing quick half-inch to 1-inch rain. there could be flash flood warnings. tim williams joins me now with a whole look at a lot of watches and warnings. >> definitely, our watch and warning map has been very, very colorful because there have been a lot coming and going. but we can break it down for you. there is a flash flood watch in effect, as well as a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9:00 tonight for the entire wjz viewing area. what you're seeing here, though, the light green here, for howard, baltimore, carroll, frederick, washington, howard, and harford -- i should say harford and howard, down toward montgomery counties. these are flash flood warnings in effect until about 6:30. bob talked about 1 to 2 inches in some of these storms.

they are coming down very fast. we want to say, turn around, don't drown. do not try to cross it. it doesn't take but about a half foot of water to move your car. we'll continue to keep you posted on these watches and warnings as they progress through the evening. >> these heavy rains are adding insult to injury, as you know. for some people hit hard in last night's storms. our first warning weather coverage continues. mike hellgren has more on the cleanup today in one hard-hit area. >> reporter: there's still a lot of damage in the aftermath of this storm. you can see a tree smashed over this fence. there's still a number of downed wires in this area. you see more tree branches down there. the red cross is assisting more than two dozen families. >> reporter: a powerful storm toppled trees and left more than 30,000 people without power. downed wires draped the pavement after fierce winds and flash floods pummeled areas from dundalk to hale thorpe. >> real windy, gusty, loud. next thing you know, a lot of

commotion. you literally heard, you know, this rackit, ruckus. >> reporter: the ricked weather damaged vehicles. >> came back to get the truck. and there was a vehicle on top of it. so looks like we're renting a u- haul to move. >> reporter: flooded streets, roofs blown off an apartment building, more trees down and vivid eyewitness accounts of the fast-moving storm. >> it was nice and sunny for a couple of moments, then it got real windy, real dark, then all hell broke loose. >> reporter: no lives were lost. >> we had to start off with small hail. then -- then went up to a half a penny. >> reporter: people across maryland are now bracing for more severe weather to come. >> reporter: and bge crews have been busy working throughout the day, they've restored power to most homes at this point. reporting there lansdowne, mike hellgren, eyewitness news. >> stay with wjz and first warning weather coverage for the updated forecast. and a live look at doppler

radar, log onto wjz.com. weather nearly delayed the historic liftoff of the space shuttle atlantis. but atlantis did blast into space. for the last shuttle mission ever. manuel gallegus reports from the kennedy space center. >> reporter: one, 0, and liftoff. the final liftoff of atlantis. >> reporter: the shuttle atlantis, rocketed into the cloudy florida sky. >> space shuttle spreads its wings one final time for the start of the sentimental journey into history. >> reporter: at the kennedy space center, there were cheers and some tears for the 135th and final mission. >> it's one of the most amaitzing thins i have ever -- amissing things i have ever seen in my entire life. i'm so emotional. >> i was crying. i can't help it. >> reporter: for this 46th trip to the space station, only four astronauts journeyed, instead of the usual six or seven. this time, there is no backup shuttle if there is an emergency. it's up to the russians russians to provide any rescue.

just before liftoff, shuttle commander christopher paid tribute. >> the shuttle will always be a reminder of what it can do if it dares to be bold. >> reporter: jim mazer is ahead of california-based rocketkyne which makes the liquid rocket engines. now, 300 scientists are out of work. >> reporter: so far, nasa hasn't revealed exactly what it has manned next for space exploration. >> for the last time, the shulings's main engines -- shuttle's main engines have fallen silent. >> reporter: but they are proud of its 30-year legacy. >> reporter: manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> what a sight. the obama administration is promising to have work on a new spacecraft that will take us even deeper into space. barm police are investigating a very serious accident. sky eye chopper 13 is over

pulaski highway. the crash appears to have involved at least two vehicles. one driver was trapped for a short time. the other driver -- two people are in the hospital at this time. their conditions are not known. we'll have more on this developing story coming up on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. the murder shocked a quiet community. and today, there are new developments in the case. denise is in the newsroom with more on the yoga shop killing in bethesda. >> well, kai, a montgomery county judge set a trial date of october 24th for britney norwood. norwood is accused in the march 24th murder of jayna murray. police say norwood killed murray after murray found stolen merchandise in her bag. norwood allegedly tied her up and claim ed they were attacked by two masked men. >> jayna murray was studying for her mba at johns hopkins at

the time of her death. the family of an alabama man stabbed to death at the inner harbor needs your help. joe callo was stabbed to death. his family set up a funeral fund so they can bury him in his hometown. you can send your contributions to frederick's funeral home ncare of joe calow. -- calo. a restaurant bar, owned by baltimore county delegate is raided by police. according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, they were acting on a complaint received by the baltimore county liquor board. delegate joseph sonny minic is part owner. no criminal charges have been filed. it will be a working weekend for top lawmakers. president obama is calling for a rare sunday meeting.

to discuss the nation's spending. randall pinkston reports. >> top lawmakers have a working weekend ahead of them. they will meet with president obama. he strived to help both sides agree on a deal to raise the debt limit. >> i'm ready to roll up my sleeves over the next several weeks and next several months. i know that people in both parties are ready to do that as well. >> reporter: but it won't be easy. republicans and democrats are fighting hard against parts of the presidenta proposal. he wants to raise the debt ceiling, slash about $4 trillion in spending and close tax loophopes. the -- loopholes. they insist they're actually tax hikes. >> there is no way that the house of representatives will support a tax increase. >> reporter: democrats are worried about the president's plan to cut spending for entitlement programs, such as medicare, medicaid, and social security. >> reporter: top house democrat nancy pelosi shared her views in a private meeting with the

president and vice president friday. >> stretching medicare, and social security has a positive impact on our country. >> reporter: they have to move quickly to find common ground. if they don't have a deal by july 22nd, they could run out of time to get a debt limit increase passed, making it possible for the nation to detaught on-- default on its loans. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> the senators canceled their vacations this week to focus on the debt limit. house lawmakers will be the same next month. they canceled their break scheduled for july 18th. margaret peterson considered the library her second home. peterson's estate is giving more than $800,000 to two library organizations. the baltimore libraries and the enoch pratt free library system. she worked until her retirement

clouds and ash are forcing a vol volcano to spewing. the ashes disrupted travel for thousands, hoping to catch south america's premiere soccer tourism. argentina's agriculture are also suffering millionless of dollars in losses. rising waters lead to a risky rescue in arizona. a homeless woman was brought down by a flash flood in tucson. people passing by called 911 after seeing her. she managed to hold onto a bush until firefighters were able to reach her. the woman had to be treated for hypothermia. the court has pushed back the date for casey anthony's

release. court officials have recalculated time served and her credit for good behavior. >> reporter: in just over one week, casey anthony will be a free woman. when she's released from jail on july 17th, it will be almost three years to the day that her daughter caylee was first reported missing. though cleared of murder, anthony was found guilty of lying to investigators in july 2008 about caylee's disappearance. wednesday, the judge sentenced her to four years in prison, but with credit for time served and good behavior, she'll spend just nine more days behind bars. >> and at least she won't get out tonight and pop the champagne court and celebrate with baez and her defense. >> reporter: for those who believe she is guilty of murder, it's not nearly enough time. a relieved casey anthony entered court thursday, smiling and relaxed, after her six-week trial. >> and her hair was all done, curled and out, just long. she had on a pretty blue sweater, had some makeup on.

>> reporter: the judge is now so worried about the jurors' safety he's delaying a decision about whether to release their names because he believes the public needs a cooling off period. >> reporter: but anthony may not have completely paid her debt to society. prosecutors want her to pay back at least $100,000 in investigative costs, a sum she should be able to ham, according to attorney mark omerra. >> she is an instant celebrity. >> reporter: in theind, anthony will have served almost exactly the same number of days in jail that her daughter caylee spent on earth. in orlando, florida, karen brown, weernl eyewitness news. >> in a statement, the court addressed security concerns and said all appropriate measures will be taken to release casey anthony back into the public. not a good end to the week on wall street. bad news about jobs pushed the

markets down. today, the dow was down 62. the s&p off 9. nasdaq down 13. let's go to new york, where susan mcginnis has tonight's update. >> unemployment went up. and that sent the dow down. investors started selling after a new governor government report showed the economy added only 18,000 jobs in june. the worst in nine months. the unemployment rate rose to 9.2%. president obama said businesses aren't hiring because of uncertainty over lawmakers will raise the nation's debt limit. republicans say the latest job numbers show congress shouldn't raise taxes. general motors is offering a new incentive to buy a car, one year of insurance. gm will get a 12-month policy to customers who purchase or lease a new vehicle. the promotion is only being offered and again in washington now. but the company says it will eventually be rolled out in more states. airlines have already taken

away frills. now, one company may put passengers to work. air france will reportedly ask flyers to clean up their own trash when leaving the plane. the airline is looking to cut costs so it can compete with discount flights. that is the latest for your money watch. at the new york stock exchange, i'm susan mcginness. a life-saving swap. six people involved in a kidney transplant today, meet at the baltimore hospital, where their lives changed forever. andrea fujii has the touching story in tonight's tonight's healthwatch. >> reporter: three lives saved from three strangers. they're meeting for the first time. >> that's just unbelievable that someone would do that. >> reporter: one-third of donors and recipients are incompatible. so the paired kidney exchange program matches the toners with someone else. >> reporter: paul mcsorly

i think the big question tonight is, what dish? maryland gets hammered 2? >> it is. we had a very -- as you know, you were on that story last night. we had very violent storms roll through here last night. and we will see these right on through tonight. around 9:00 or 10:00. before we start to see some calming down. take a look at first warns live doppler radar. you can see a lot of these storms rolling on through. the entire wjz viewing area is affected by flash flood watch in effect. and a severe thunderstorm watch in effect through 9:00 p.m. tonight. and now we have flash flood warnings in effect roughly

until about 6:45. and now severe thunderstorm warnings now. just a lot of rain. the entire area is going to see these thunderstorms rolling on through here. they're moving very slowly. so they're capable. producing maybe 1 to 2 inches of rain. and that does create the problems for flash flooding. so if you do see some standing waters, turn around, don't drown. don't try to go through standing water. you don't know how deep it is. and if it's moving water, you don't try to move your car. we have watches and warnings in effect to give you an idea of how this breaks down. the entire area, these colors are stacked on top of each other. the flash flood watches and severe thunderstorm watches in effect for everyone, except for allegheny and garrett counties. then we do have again, the flash flood warnings in effect for all of the areas you see here in the light green. and that is until about 6:45. and that is pending how quickly these storms move through. so the way it all looks now is

temperatures at 81. what is fueling all of this is the moisture in the atmosphere. when the dew points are in the 60s, we have enough fuel to create severe thunderstorms and flash flooding with all of the rain and the moisture that it had to work with. we're up in the 70s now. a lot of moisture out there. winds from the west at six miles per hour. and air has cooled down because of the rain earlier. oakland at 64. everyone in the 80s. we have 71 in hagerstown. 90 in easton, around the immediate metro area. everyone in the mid- to upper 80s, except for westminster at 79. winds coming in from the west. you can expect to see those winds gusting at times. we're going to start tapping into very warm air into the weekend. with temperatures getting up to around 90 degrees. these storms are going to continue to move on through the rest of the night. moving from the northwest and to the east. and these rounds and rounds of thunderstorms will continue to move on through. tomorrow, we'll start to see the less humid and dryer air moving on through, with a good bit of sunshine. and that will make for a very

it is 4:30. 79 degrees and raining in central maryland now. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> here's what people are talking about. >> british police have made an arrest in the tabloid hacking scandals. rita nissan reports that britain's prime minister is now in damage control mode. >> the scandal has taken down one of the best-selling tabloids. police have arrested david cameron's friend and former top aide andy schoolson on suspicion he was tabbing -- tapping into cell phones and voice mails. after phone hacking alwayses, he was forced to resign from the paper in 2007.

>> the decision to harm was mine and mine alone and i take full responsibility for it. >> reporter: police also arrested collide goodman, a former top news of the world reporter. more arrests could be coming, with allegations that the papers didn't just hack the phones of celebrities and royals but crime victims and fallen soldiers. trying to contain the fallout, the prime minister nounced -- announced two separate probes and promised tighter rules for britain's free-for-all press. >> mr. murdoch -- >> rupert murdoch sits on top of the press, news of the world, as well as wall street and fox. >> reporter: news of the world has been the british paper for 168 years. but people we spoke to today said it was time to pull the murdoch plug. >> unbelievable this was going on for so long. i'm glad they closed down that paper. >> reporter: some watchers believe the shutdown is calculated because murdoch is trying to take over a major

deal, british sky broadcasting. if the deal is blocked, it could cost him billions. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the last edition of the news of the world will be published on sunday. a night out at the ballpark turns tragic. kai is in the newsroom with details on this disturbing story. a texas rangers fan plunges to his death, trying to catch a ball. the 39-year-old man was reaching for a baseball that was tossed in the stands by outfielder josh hamilton. the man fell about 20 feet and landed on concrete at the ballpark in arlington. after catching that ball. his young son was with him in the stands and witnessed the fall. the rangers' president nolan ryan said they are shocked over this incident. >> our team members and our staff were very heavy-hearted about this. and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. and that's where we are tonight.

>> reporter: the man who fell had been a firefighter nearly 20 years. back to you. >> kai, thank you. well, some severe weather is moving across maryland right now. a thunderstorm warning and flash flood warnings are in effect across the state. bob turk is tracking the storms and the first warning weather center. bob? >> i guess the good news is, looks like most of the activity today will be over by about 7:00. but we have a lot of thunderstorms in the region. as you mentioned, some areas into flash flood warnings, some under severe thunderstorm warnings. and the entire region under flash flood watch. and the severe thunderstorm watch. looking around the baltimore region. light rain and heavy echoes now, from east of the city, right down to middle river and dundalk. they had heavy rain last night. and from owings mills down to near columbia, to the west of the city. northwest of the area, light rain now, from westminster to liberty counties. saw heavy rain about an hour ago. and some heavy echoes around the washington area. some areas are getting really,

really pounded. the good news is, as you watch this activity, most of it should be through the region, i think the next two hours. although we still have the watches and advisories in effect through this evening. until about 9:00, the severe thunderstorm watch. some areas will see easily, 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period of time. that's why we could see some possible flooding. once again, if you cross the roadway that has 5 to 6 to 7 inches of water in it. turn around, don't drown. that water could take your car away. please heed our advice. come back a little later, with an update on the radar. another hit for the economy today. trying to rebound from a spring slump. susan mcginness reports for wjz, hiring slowed to a near standstill last month, despite projections of a big jump. darra fulton teaches english as a second language. she loves her work, and losing her job was devastating. >> my first thought when i asked my supervisor, i asked him, is there any way this

could be reversed? >> reporter: for the unemployed, there is little comfort in the latest labor report. the nation gained just 18,000 new jobs in june. and the unemployment rate rose to 9.2%. the numbers were worse than expected and a blow to president obama. >> we've added more than 2 million new private sector jobs over the past 16 months. but the recession cost us more than 8 million. and that means that we still have a big hole to fill. >> reporter: the news hit hard on wall street, where the markets had been on a winning streak. stocks were near their highest levelsful -- levels of the year, until the job news brought the rally to a quick halt. >> reporter: investors worry the economy is stuck in a rut, and dropped sharply from the opening bell. republican leaders used the report as an argument for holding the line on taxes. >> tax hikes on families and job creators would only make things worse. >> reporter: more than 14 million americans are looking

for work. and for job hunters like darra fulton, it's hard to stay happy. >> i feel like i'm not where i'd like to be. >> reporter: which is back in the classroom. and until that happens, her life and her career are on hold. susan mcginness, cbs news, wall street. more than 6 million americans are now considered long-term unemployed, meaning they have been out of work for six months or longer. prove it. that is what one maryland senator is saying to the mdta. senator e.j. pipkin wants the agency to pull its case from the toll pike. pipkin says they have not accounted for millions of dollars that bay bridges have used for tolls over the years. he says he's asked for figures but so far, he hasn't seen any. a call investigating the murder of a howard county woman. investigators sound of found -- found some of the dismembered remains of laura giddings, but

are asking for help finding the rest of her body. the 21-year-old went missing june 25th. police are using search dogs today to reexamine the apartment complex in macon, georgia, where her body was found. police have several persons of interest they are questioning. a call for the fda to investigate a popular hair straightener. jessica kartalija has the latest on the controversy over the brazillian blowout. >> reporter: vic, it seems like the perfect answer to keep hair from frizzing up. but now, at least 10 members of the house are asking the fda to get involved. they want the agency to look into whether women who undergo the brazillian blowout are getting too high levels of formaldehyde. formaldehyde is classified as a possible carcinogen. >> hair straighteners are considered cosmetics by the fda and are not subject to

premarket approval. let's check on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, denise. hi, everyone. the rain is definitely affecting your drive. we're having problems on 95 in both directions. southbound 95, that is heavy past the beltway. also, northbound 95, up to whitemarsh boulevard. as far as the beltway itself, no good news there. if you're traveling on the outer loop, you're looking at 45 minutes, perring parkway to baltimore national pike. at least 30 minutes on the inner loop park heights to harford road. and also congestion on the west side. that's from southwestern boulevard. 8 miles an hour average as you can see. as far as 70 westbound goes, still a lot of brake lights there, from 29 over to mare marriottsville road. and a couple of accidents in the region. harford to mount vista. winters run at singers road. and also hanson road at edgewood road. let's take a live look. that's the beltway. and we'll take another live look, you can see the beltway,

r. four people are dead after their small plain crashed. the plane skid and burst into flames. the hospital was not hit and no patients were harmed. the identities of the people who were killed have not been released. the cause of the crash is under investigation. in michigan, an ex-convict goes on a deadly shooting spree, targeting two ex- girlfriends and five members of their family. dean reynolds reports for wjz. >> reporter: after a tense standoff with police, 34-year- old roderick chante dansler took his own life, inside the grand rapids home where he had been holding hostages. >> we heard a gunshot. and it turned out to be a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. >> reporter: he is suspected of

shooting people to death in two separate locations. three adults and a child were gunned down in one home. in the other, two women, one of whom is believed to be a former girlfriend of dansler, and her 4-year-old daughter were fate leel shot. >> two families, just torn apart. all in the blink of an eye. if one person could do this to somebody, it's terrible. >> reporter: within hours, police spotted dansler and a woman in a tan lincoln town car, which led to a high-speed chase. at one point, authorities closed parts of the interstate, when dansler and officers exchanged gunfire. >> had to fire out the window toward their car. and kind of just ducked down. and the police continued chasing it. >> reporter: authorities don't have a motive for dansler. but his daughter and an ex- girlfriend were among the seven people killed. and again, investigators do not know what triggered the attack. but the police chief says dansler appeared to be mentally unstable. an inmate's plan to get out

of jail leads to a three-day manhunt. jessica kartalija has more. >> reporter: two inmates staged the fight, tricking the guards. when the door opened, the inmates jumped on the opportunity to break free. this is surveil agency video of the escape. you can see police struggling to keep trent archie from escaping. police captured archie on the third their man hunt. archy was convicted of murder and was serving 40 years in prison. archie girlfriend has also been convicted for providing the getaway car. can you think safe? one woman was going through security at seatac airport. and tsa agents insisted on searching her hair. the woman said she saw a white woman with similar hair and she was not searched the same way. the tsa guard says the security guards were just being thorough. winning a burrito-eating

contest leads to a hospital trip for one man in california. the winning burrito he ate containerred the ghost pepper. he could barely breathe. he was vomiting in the rest room after the dangerous meal. he has since recovered from the hospital visit. in today's eyewitness news, summer fun may not be in the cards for the 30 million americans who suffer from migraines. as ashley morrison reports, it is the time of year that can make those painful headaches feel even worse. summer usually means fun in the sun and leisurely late nights. but for 32-year-old kristen dugal, it means more migraines. >> i definitely i think it means more in the summer. i do have to spend just hours or even a whole day in bed at times. >> reporter: migraine sufferers like kristen often have to deal with more frequent

and debilitating headaches. this time of year. doctors say backyard parties are often to plaivment. >> foods such as cold cuts, pastrami, salami. those are typically made of nitrates. people eat a lot more of those in the summer and those chemicals can trigger headaches. >> reporter: the weather is also a culprit. heat and humidity could cause the bad to sweat and lose a lot of water and sodium. that dehydration can cause problems. >> reporter: summer storms and dips in the barometric pressure can also bring on trouble. >> when the storm clouds are rolling in. when there's a big "l" on the weather map, people need to be a little more cautious and pay more attention to the triggers. >> reporter: to prevent migraines, sticking to the routine is key. doctors advise eating and sleeping at the usual time and taking it easy on the alcohol. >> reporter: clear, dry alcoholic drinks are less likely to cause an attack. kristen tries to do all of that and more. >> it just wasn't worth it to

wjz. thunderstorms moving through maryland. and several watches and warnings are in effect. bob turk has the updated first warning weather forecast next. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

bob is keeping his eye on radar. you can see some of these storms moving through. >> looks like a whirlwind downtown now. but really heavy rains. some areas getting an inch or more in a 45-minute to an hour period. and that can cause and has caused flash flooding. those low-lying areas. they can take a look around the region. as far as radar is concerned. if you look west of this, it's quieted down. in fact, from frederick west, it has really just completely finished. around the baltimore region, however, we still have a heavy, heavy rain activity. and thunderstorm activity. gusty winds, lightning in the area. around the city now, a batch of stuff to the northwest. not nearly as heavy as you see from perry hall. down from east of dundalk in a.a. county. that's the heaviest stuff. and northwest of the region. much, much lighter. from finks burg west.

in fact, west of westminster. liberty town. the heaviest activity by far, severna park, just north of annapolis there. crofton, upper marlboro. that's where they have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. as you can see, west of the region, for this whole line of activity, gone down to virginia, pretty much to southwest of washington. west of us, there's no precipitation showing. now looks like the bulk of this will be to the east. i think we'll be pretty much in the clear. from washington south, particularly lower eastern shore. and western shore here. still dealing with the activity, to probably 9:00 or 10:00 at night. the heaviest stuff is just moving to the east of the region. temperature-wise, we dropped the rain activity at the airport. by the way, the airport only picked up 10/100ths of know inch. -- of an inch. that's going to go in the

books. jacksonville county, almost 4 inches of rain in that storm last night. 73 now. west winds at 10. barometer still falling. 68, oakland. still 90 in easton. sunshine and much hotter temperatures down there. and even pretty severe storms. 88, patuxent. high dew point. a lot of moisture. 70s, kept where the rain hasn't hit yet. still around the 80-degree mark. right now, winds all over the place. we've had a general southerly wind. that's going to shift tomorrow to the west/northwest. as this front continues to move along and behind it. above it, the high pressure moves. that means we'll be gone with the rain. a lot of the rain in virginia. that will pass to our south tonight. so look for much better weather coming in for the weekend. it will be warm. temperatures probably near 90. but a lot less humid. a lot more comfortable conditions. dry and comfortable. particularly across pennsylvania and new england. north winds on the bay.
