jim: the pga championship will go back to the 16th hole. three holes total strokes. i am sure they are thrilled that they don't have to go back to 15 to begin this. nick: exactly. jim: at this point it would have been so easy to write off keegan bradley. he was five behind. that would fall into the water at that very hole, but make four. at 16. he righted things with that birdie. dufner was making bogo the same hole. and then at 17, again, two-shot swing. bradley with the unimaginable make from across the green.

dufner 3-putted from 45 feet. a two and a four. and they came to the last hole really in a very similar position. bradley a little closer, had this long putt for the lead. tap-in for keegan and a round of 68. and then dufner, he was just outside that shadow while keegan was right on it. and a very similar result. but you had to think about this for a while. he stood over the par putt and then drilled it to send it on to the 16th. we are playoff bound here in johns creek, georgia. ♪

jim: back here and the ballet for the wanamaker trophy, dufner and bradley. unsung participants for sure heading on to a playoff. the first playoff hole is coming up. we will be heading over to gary mccord's 16th hole. a flashback to this playoff concept began in valhalla. tiger walking it in on that first playoff hole. one of his great playoff holes. in 2004 justin leonard and chris dimarco were there. that same pga championship. he won in 1998 in the state of washington. last year, bubba watson and

martin kaymer. remember we thought it would be dustin johnson as well but he incurred that penalty on the 72nd hole and kaymer won it. so, what you have here is you have jason dufner, 34 years old. he won three college tournaments at auburn where he was a walk-on player. two nationwide wins but never a pga tour win. he would join a very impressive list of golfers through the years whose first win was a major. names like nicklaus and tre vino and john daly. or you will have keegan bradley, a rookie, to win a major. someone winning a major in his first attempt at a major. that has only happened twice now in the last 100 years.

you have ben curtis in 2003. then you have to go back before that to that storied u.s. open at the country club. nick: two totally different characters. we have one man who wears his emotions on the outside and one who has all of his emotions on the inside. so, i have no idea which way this will swing. keegan bradley came off playing the last three holes in 2-under as dufner playing them in two over. so you would lean that direction. jim: how do you like the three-hole, total strokes? nick: i like all of them to be honest. did very well at augusta twice that way.

the u.s. open is still the full 18. i can understand why everybody wants to finish sunday night. jim: so, as they head to the 16th, let's look at the leaderboard and the final standings from third on down. hansen alone in that position and then toms, robert karlsson, verplank share fourth. adam scott, seventh. alone. donald and westwood, looked like for a while early stages of the second side they would make a run at it. they share eighth. kevin nvingts a, a top 10 with d.a. points, stricker, schwartzel, hause, immelman, woodland, all 12th.

the cut here out of the 20 participants. he is the golf coach at the university of illinois down in champagne, illinois. goes way back with streef stricker. 16, 17, 18, we will add them up. nick: smashed a drive. dufner had his second shot and lost it to the right, one of the first signs, because he had been so consistent. keegan bradley hit a fabulous shot in there to about 10 feet shot in there to about 10 feet below the hole.

nick: you would definitely say dufner would feel as if he lost it. keegan bradley would feel rejuvenated based on what happened on the 15th. jim: tonight on cbs, 60 minutes, big brother, same name and "csi: miami" on america's number one network. we knew since thursday there would be a dramatic story at the end. somehow the final four holes would rachet up the excitement. it certainly didn't disappoint. nick: peter kostis made a good point. somebody would lose it down at the last four.

this is such an interesting moment. the emotions of these two players, which way do you lean? do you lean towards dufner because he is just going to churn it out, or do you go with a guy that is showing way more emotion in keegan bradley? jim: at least they both made four at 18. that is not an easy thing to that is not an easy thing to do. jim: let me ask you this, tell

me what it means to golf it dufner wins, if bradley wins. nick: if keegan bradley wins, the stories have been incredible this year. from a real rookie to win his first major, that is a fantastic story. what incredible message does that send to everybody. dufner is a great story of a guy where we have seen -- peter kostis described it as well. in the past people come in under the radar have a first great day. but over the last few years it changed. for some reason they find a way to get in there and hang in there and win. it is the same almost every other week. >> if there is still a tie we will go to hole 18. if there is still a tie we will play 10, 17 and 18 in order until we have a winner.

keegan, you select one. jason, you have is the honor. jim: david price officiating over that. he was the official on the scene last year. he notified dustin johnson that there had been a violation. gary mccord, we will hand it off to you, my friend. nick: i stayed right here. he had a four-shot lead when he came through here. i was like we will go back to the compound. the last couple of holes, i stayed right where i am. this hole today 468 yards again. jason hits it quite a bit shorter than keegan bradley. he has to get it in the fairway first.

it is about 7:15. we have about one hour of daylight here in atlanta. and we have three very difficult holes. if they start playing ring around the rosie we could have a problem with daylight. that is the last thing on their minds right now. number one, trying to get this ball into the fairway. i don't think there will be much problem with that one. same old stuff. the drive he hit on 18 was absolutely superb. nowhere to hit it. right where he had to. that is just center cut right there. that is about 285 yards out. the start of those three bunkers on the right is about 285 to 290. keegan, for whatever reason

well, for two guys that are not used to this, one guy never won. the other guy is a rookie who won one golf tournament, that a boy. let's watch this shot right here. he is mull belling. i thought that ball was going to go right on top of the flagstick. look at this. that putt from the other side would break to the left. there you go. there you go. that is the most emotion we have seen in four days. now undaunted, just a nice little three quarter swing

there. he is staring it down. look at this shot. closer and a much easier putt. jim: how many shots do you see better than those two? >> i can't remember any in a long time. they are in a playoff. for a major championship. nick: great side angle shot there. we could see how much break on dufner's putt. he has to be careful, doesn't he. >> yes. it goes left. he missed it left like everybody has from above this hole. you know, these guys learn pretty fast. nick: the little rush of blood start to think that keegan is

going to make his. i force mine. he could end up with a five-footer. >> don't get ahead of yourself, nick. nick: three scenarios. holes it, lags it, five feet past. >> this is just outside of the hole. they were out here cleaning out this green with the brooms and everything getting everything ready. so these greens will be perfect at this point. nick: i was trying to say that he wants to make it, but you cannot force it. >> because this ball has some giddy up.

>> missed it left. that putter stopped at impact. it literally stopped. looked like it stopped and he did not start walking. very interesting. look at that putter, kind of a double hit right there. he knew it was left at that point. again, he has seen that putt. wow. that is a tough one to give up. the other guy has serious mojo going right now. >> gary, he has a putt that he can hit a little bit more aggressively, but he still has to be careful. again, this sent match play so he can't get frisky with this.

two great shots into the 16th hole. one walks away with a birdie. the other has a short putt for a par. keegan now has birdied 16, 17 and now 16 again in the last four holes. that is noteworthy after that triple bogey. should as well dealt a blow to the head to him. ok. we will go to 17 and 18. water everywhere. and nerves are frayed. jim: just remember a year ago bubba watson had bird oat first playoff hole but kaymer

eventually won it. just an awesome shot. looked like it might be holed for an eagle. bradley backed it up with a better one, i don't know how to. birdie the hole twice in the last hour -- >> very, very impressive. he hit six 100 percenters. jim: dufner went to the fat grip, the thick grip because he missed putts left. he made the change this week. bradley holed his. he has the one shot lead with two holes to play. interestingly keegan won that tournament in the hp byron nelson while dufner was in a playoff and lost this year. they are now on the tee at the 17.

the lineup tonight on cbs has been altered a bit here on the east coast. 60 minutes, big brother, same name. well, he can breathe again now. nick: what a fabulous shot. that made it by all of two yards, ian. >> what a shot. jason dufner has 7-iron. same club again. he was short substantially in regulation. if he went at the flag earlier it would be in the water. >> his hand is forced now. he really needs to take this on. the wind is blowing harder and harder up here. shoved it a little. and that is a very difficult putt from there. hole high about 50 feet for jason dufner. he is one behind keegan bradley. and once again, the shot beautifully played by keegan

victory if keegan bradley were to go on and win. jason dufner of course with his new putting grip took a page out of k.j. choi's book with the big, thick putter. gets a little jumpy with the shorter ones. nick: you have all of these major golfing brands that have computers and all sorts of things. you go on them and you stroke the ball and you hit golf balls and you get such incredible feedback. >> you get the best for you. >> exactly. spat out of the computer. very fast putt. remember, in regulation from a similar distance he whacked it 12 feet by. this is a little different line.

nick: steamy again. >> saw it all day, nick. that green is like lightning down the hill. he lost his touch. and of course earlier, i can still hear the roars from regulation play when keegan bradley holed this putt. nick: that just shows you how good it was. he takes that emotion with him into this playoff. he has to be feeling so much better about his game and the way he feels here. nick: amazing recovery for a youngster, a rookie in a major to recover like that. >> his first major championship ever. just amazing. already a winner on tour.

remember taud hamilton won in 2004. he is the only other rookie ever to achieve that feat. he was just trying to lag it up and knocked it five feet by. it must be quicker than the other greens, it is just amazing. that putt is very dolvet read. nick: he knows he has an amazing opportunity to get two shots. if jason dufner hole this is one, it will be a bit of a tall order. i haven't seen many made from that front donorer.

>> this would be a heck of a putt to hole, just to make it even weirder. nick: yeah. we have seen everything. >> he made a good stroke. i will give him that. the putter swung freely. he hit it where he wanted. that is what everyone has done today. unfortunately for jason dufner, that is a 3-putt bogey. exactly what he did here in regulation. so a chance now for young bradley to hole this and take a two-shot lead to that last. anything can happen there at 18. nick: then what would you do? would you even think about it? >> i might take an iron. nick: do you think about playing for a true five? a david toms five. the last thing that you want to do is to tweak one into the

water. >> he has to make this one first. >> and he needs all of his attention. this is not an easy putt. >> peter, it appears that it goes to the right, and it doesn't. it is inside the hole. sneaks it in the left side. well, a great three there for keegan bradley. he will make his way to the 18th tee now with a two-shot advantage over jason dufner. nick: and a feeling inside his stomach that he has never felt in his life. seriously got to think about some strategy now. >> he must, nick. nick: or just blast away. my goodness.

jim: so, a two-shot advantage with a hole to play in this three-hole playoff. they were in similar spots off of the tee in regulation. dufner a little bit past bradley on this occasion. and then they hit approach shots, even though they were separated by one group, they landed them in a similar spot. both made four. nick: they were only separated by tee with the club of choice. jason went with a driver and keegan went with his little rescue or something. >> no he hit his rescue. that is what he has to do this time but make a no-left swing. if he lands in the bunker he can still lay it up. nick: that is what a lot of players thought this week. if you miss the fairway you lay up and try to get up and down. jim: try to find one of these

perfect fairways at atlanta athletic club. a huge nod to ken mangum, the director of course here. him and his staff, all of those that put this place in such beautiful shape for the pga championship. >> a big decision on the shape of the shot, whether you go down the middle of the fairway and hit a very slight left to right. guaranteeing that it is not going to go left. if you come out of it would definitely go in one of those bunkers. or in regulation went with his very subtle two-yard draw. jim: would you even be thinking that there is no reason to even think about going for this green. a lot of people played lay up to win it, david toms 10 years ago. nick: it makes sense to hit

ok. nick: yeah, ok. very much like the shot at 17 that made it by about three or four yards. and that was four or five. for a youngster, the first time experience to be the sensation of hitting the shot like that in a major. you will remember that for the rest of your life. jim: we talked about his aunt pat, and all of this experience growing up with an lpga hall of famer as your aunt. he attended the cup when she captained the u.s. team in scotland. but not to be lost in all of this, his mother, kay, is out here in the gallery, and his father is a pga professional. reminds me of when davis love won at winged foot. they understand the lives of these professionals. the 27,000 men and women of the

his father, mark, out at jackson hole golf and tennis club. jason's mother, barbara. he lost his father in 2001. i asked him last night about his dad. they were very close. he passed away on masters sunday, 2001. that is the day that tiger completed his tiger slam. lost a battle to cancer. he needs to hole this and then bradley would have to 3-putt. and he has done his part! good for him!

dufner. for 68 holes you played beautiful golf. what changed for you at the end? >> they are just tough holes. i played them even for the week. i would probably take that at the beginning of the week. unfortunately playing three overcoming in was disappointing. there is a lot to be learned and experience to be gained. keegan played great that stretch and that is what decided the tournament. >> congratulations. i know you are a little disappointed right now but there are a whole lot of positives for you. back up to you, jim. jim: well, steven hale, his caddie, instructor, family all sharing in this wonderful moment. the 25-year-old rookie. the first to win a major in his very first appearance on the big stage since ben curtis in 2003 and all the way back to francis before that.
