few days with her family. and we will bring you much more on this breaking news story coming up all new at 4:30. well, in a medical opinion, week 2 of dr. conrad murray's involuntary manslaughter trial gets under way with information from a volunteer e.r. doctor. >> reporter: dr. conrad murray's lawyer got his chance to question the emergency room doctor who treated michael jackson. dr. rachelle cooper described one of the short conversations she had with murray on june 25, 2009, the day jackson was rushed to ucla medical center. >> i asked him what happened. >> and what did he say? >> he reported that mr. jackson is working very hard. that he was, he thought, dehydrated. >> reporter: dr. cooper told the court jackson died before he reached the hospital. she gave permission to paramedics to pronounce him

dead after they performed resuscitation in his home. but they asked for additional medical treatment. >> but there was no chance of treating mr. jackson was there? successfully. >> from what i know now? no. but at the time. i had a 50-year-old male who was dead. >> we're going to break coverage and go back to italy, where we are following the verdict in the amanda knox case. this is her family. they have just gathered. let's listen in. this is amanda knox' family. >> she was sentenced for a crime she didn't commit. we are thankful for our lawyers. and their assistants. not only did they defend her brilliantly, but they also loved her. we are thankful for the support we have received from all over the world. people who took the time to research the case and could see that amanda and ra -- rafaely

there, mike? >> it was quite a scare there. the social security administration headquarters was on total lockdown for a period of time. that lockdown is now over. and police did a thorough search for any clues as they tried to find the man who shot that worker. >> reporter: police scoured an area off woodlawn drive near the social security administration headquarters, where an ssa employee was shot near noon. it happened while he was on his lunch break. the motive? police say it was a robbery. a brazen one that put the ssa, where almost 12,000 people worked, on lockdown as a precaution because it happened so close to campus. retired social security worker, core -- cora tucker. >> you know that somebody shoots somebody. that didn't make sense. >> reporter: the victim collapsed in the street near the i-70 overpass, but is expected to survive. this mother who lives near the scene and asked us not to show

her face is fed up with the crime. >> this is just showing that people aren't conscious anymore. we're not safe wherever we go, whether it's the city or county. >> they were shot to death just three years ago after that. and now, this, she doesn't feel safe anymore. >> the stuff that is happening around here is getting ridiculous. >> reporter: police collected evidence, taking it a -- away in bags at the scene. there was a fast response from officers as they searched for the gunman. >> reporter: the social security administration commissioner said they are beefing up security on the parking lots and urged employees to be vigilant. we did see a lot of security there today. reporting live in woodlawn, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, mike. thank you. the victim is being treated at sinai hospital right now. a homicide investigation today after a city police officer shoots and kills an armed man. vic is in the newsroom to explain what happened in the moments before the officer fired. vic? >> well, mary, the call came in from a man in baltimore, saying

his life was in danger. officers responded to this home to find a man with a gun. when they ordered the man to drop his weapon, he refused. and officers say he advanced on them. one officer fired on the man and he later died at the hospital. police have not released the man's identity. >> thank you, vic. the officer involved in the shooting is on routine administrative leave. eight mta subway stations closed this afternoon are back open. wjz is live. alex demetrick speaks to the mta and the fire department to explain what happened. alex? >> well, mary, this impacted the metro line that ran all underneath downtown baltimore. >> reporter: baltimore city hazmat crews responded with highly sensitive sniffers. while the mta evacuated eight metro stations under downtown and sealed them off to riders. >> sir? sir? subway is closed. closed from mondawmin to johns hopkins. >> reporter: it was all triggered from a 911 call that

someone either made from the tunnel or one of the station's platforms, complaining of a strong odor of gas. >> we dispatched five. each in the underground subway stations to perform underground monitoring. >> some said they could smell the odor. >> life is short. and you are just trying to get home. and now, you might die because of an explosion possibly? that's kind of crazy. like. and it's a monday. the workweek. like i'm trying to earn some money to see my daughter. >> reporter: mta quickly established a bus route. a lot of inconvenience followed. >> ohs are man. it's crazy. -- oh, man. it's crazy. >> as a precaution, we wanted to make sure that we got all of the passengers out of there until the fire department and others could come in and check the system out to make sure it was safe. >> and a few hours after it began, the fire department got the all-clear. >> we got no readings or assessment of any type of odor,

which would certainly limit the threshold. >> meaning no ambulance rides, just a lot of crowded buses. >> after first running the subway system, all of the metro stations downtown have since reopened in time for the rush hour. mary? >> and that's a good thing, alex. thank you. well, inspections of the outside of the washington monument continued today. work stopped over the weekend because of strong winds. engineers are back on the monument today, looking for damage from the august 23rd earthquake. the close inspections started last wednesday. on saturday, one engineer was actually blown about 30 feet by a gust of wind. he was not seriously hurt. >> there is a bit of improvement in our weather. it is cool, with a bit of a breeze. and the sun has been actually trying to pop in and out. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> in and out. mostly out. because right now, this little batch of light rain moving

through central maryland. take a look at radar. look at that little batch rolling down from york, pennsylvania right through the baltimore region. and it's rotating around low pressure that is still stuck over the area. take a closer look. you see that rain, right down 83, right through the city. it's pretty light stuff. and it will be with us the next couple of hours, before things begin to finally clear out. believe it or not, tomorrow is the start of a big change in the weather. as that low finally, i mean, finally pulls out. we get a lot of dry air. looks like we're going to see at least four, five, maybe even six or seven days without rain and plenty of sun. actually, it looks pretty good. we'll have the forecast coming up. >> we won't know what to do with ourselves, bob. thank you. let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi tmary. hi, everyone. a lot of accidents to start off the afternoon.

wjz continues to follow the breaking news from italy, where an appeals court has just ruled that amanda knox is not guilty of killing her former roommate. and amanda is free to leave italy as soon as possible. we're looking at her family reacting after the ruling was read in court. moments ago, her sister spoke about all her family has been through. >> we're thankful that amanda's nightmare is over. she suffered for four years for a crime that she did not commit. we are thankful for our lawyers, carlo dela vida va, luchango, and maria della rosa, and their assistant. not only did they defend her brilliantly, but they also loved her. we are thankful for the support we have received from all over the world. people who took the time to research the case and could see that amanda and raffiale were

innocent. lastly, we are thankful for the court for having the truth to look -- the courage to look for the truth and overturn this conviction. >> here's a look outside the courthouse in peruggia, italy, where a big crowd was there earlier. supporters and onlookers were gathered there. mainly, we just see a lot of police at this point. you know, the case made international headlines, has been a huge scandal in italy really. our continued coverage continues at 4:30. flames ripped through a texas chemical plant. plumes of smoke could be seen for miles. the fire spread to trains near the plant and is feeding off dry brush and grass in the area. the warehouse houses ammonia, along with other chemicals. students and staff at a nearby school have been asked to remain inside, in case any dangerous gases may be released. >> reporter: a bear breaks into a pennsylvania home and attacks a couple. it happened inside a newport home, which is just outside of

harrisburg. the couple let their dog out early this morning. and when they let him back in, a black bear followed. the bear attacked the man and when the woman tried to get the bear off him, it turned on her. the couple was taken to the hospital for scratches and bites. the pennsylvania game commission still looking for that black bear right now. >> a rough start to the week on wall street. stocks dropped dramatically, through this afternoon. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow is down 258 points. s&p off 32. and nasdaq down 80. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the u.s. economy is growing modestly, despite high unemployment, and concerns about europe's debt crisis. a new report shows manufacturing rose in september for the first time in three months. but the pace of growth remains weak. and construction spending picked up in august because of a rise in state and local government projects.

americans return to car show rooms in september. they bought more pickups and suvs. and that helped sales at general motors climb 20%. chrysler had its best september in 24 years at 27%, while ford posted a more modest 9% increase in sales. toyota said its september auto sales fell 18%, as it continued to deal with supply shortages, stemming from the earthquake and tsunami in japan. more bad news coming out of greece. the government said it will miss deficit reduction charges it had agreed to as part of its bailout agreement. that raised worries that greece could default on its debt. the greek government also announced it is laying off 3,000 government workers to save money. >> shares of eastland kodak. after a disputed report. that report sent the stock down about 50% on friday. kodak released a statement, saying it has no intention of filing for bankruptcy.

[ crying ] >> both are acquitted. for not having committed the -- because the fact does not exist. >> reporter: earlier this n the day, the -- in the day, the seattle native made a plea to the italian natives, saying she had nothing to do with the murder of meredith kirchner. >> i did not rape, i did not steal steal, i did not kill, she

said. >> reporter: knox was sentenced. she and her boyfriend, raffaele sollecito were convicted of killing her roommate in the apartment the two shared. >> reporter: this case captured the world's attention, with hundreds of reporters and camera crews coming to perugia for the verdict. >> reporter: kircher's family came in from england for the verdict. they say meredith has been forgotten in all of this. >> everything meredith went through that night, everything she went through, the fear and the terror, and not knowing why, um -- and she didn't deserve that. >> reporter: but knox's case got a big boost when independent experts testified that key dna evidence, linking the couple to the crime was unreliable and possibly tainted. for knox and her family, it's been a long road, but one that will end up with knox back home in the u.s. in peruggia, italy.

breaking story at 5:00 and 6:00. journalists scoured the island where a bloody massacre took place. lawyers said back in july, admitted killer anders breivik is serving. meanwhile, breivik is behind bars, awaiting trial. a victim has been recovered. the body of a woman killed in a small plane crash in the chesapeake bay is found. the single-engine plane crashed in chrisfield, somerset county. they were piloting the plane with a 78-year-old mother on board. when the many hit the water, both were on shore. mary did not make it. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a scientist who won the nobel prize for medicine dies just days before receiving the award. calling it bittersweet news, coworkers of canadian-borne ralph stineman said he had

prolonged his own life based on research from the prize-winning immune system. he passed away after a four- year battle with pancreatic cancer. it appears some parents still have concerns about the safety of vaccinations am. >> a new report finds one in 10 new parents do not follow the recommended vaccination schedule for children. only 2% of children in the -- parents refused all vaccines. but many showed distrust for the recommended vaccination schedule. 13% reported using an alternative vaccine schedule, meaning they skipped or delayed vac vaccines. doctors say skepticism is fueled by misconceptions. >> federal health officials recommend that by age 6, children should have vaccinations against 14 diseases. a groomy and chilly start. here's a live look outside.

well, back to the breaking news we first brought you alt the top -- at the top of the hour. american student amanda knox goes free. the seattle native burst into tears as the not guilty verdict was read. the appeals court acquitted her, agreeing with expert that key dna evidence in the case was unreliable, and possibly tainted. and this is another live look at the jail in perugia, italy. knox could be on her way out of that jail and home as soon as tonight. we'll have complete coverage coming up. the somali man charged in

the hijacking learned their fate. a federal judge sentenced the men to life in prison today. while in court, one said he was sorry to the families of the victims. all four americans on board were shot to death, including the yacht's owners, jean and scott adam. still no word on what caused a deadly air crash at an air show. the report says nothing broke off of the 1950s-era crash that killed the pilot. it happened in martinsburg, just one day after an air race crash in had nevada -- in nevada killed 11. the wife of george wright said she had no idea about his criminal past. >> reporter: denise, maria del rosario valenti said she was shocked to learn about her husband's past, after they caught him. they caught him after 41 years

on the lam. the u.s. is trying to extradite wright to serve the remainder of his sentence. the fbi says he broke out of prison and later took part in highjacking a plane to algeria in 1972. valenti said she and her grown children are grief-stricken about this arrest. jailhouse videos are now being released. a florida judge reveals never- before-seen pictures of casey anthony in jail. it shows anthony reacting to the news her daughter's remains were found. >> hyperventilating and in grief, a newly released video shows a grieving casey an anthony as she learned a child's body had been discovered near her parents' home. it would be nearly a week before the remains were identified as that of her daughter, caylee.

this video had been under seal, considered too inflammatory to show jurors. >> we had specific concerns. and the main concern, of course, was keeping this from the public view, initially, to not prejudice ms. anthony's right to a fair trial. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: anthony was acquitted of killing her daughter in july. and 10 days later, she walked out of jail for the first time in three years. in the three months since anthony's release, she's become a different kind of prisoner. forced into hiding by a threatening public. and though she is clear, her legal troubles remain far from over. she remains in florida on probation for check fraud. and the court re -- ordered her to repay taxpayers $97,000 for sending police on a wild goose chase in the weeks after caylee

went missing. >> casey's parents say they have no desire to be in touch with their daughter. the mental hospital home of john hinckley, jr., wants the attempted assassin sent home. now, the government mental hospital where he lives is asking the federal court to release him. but prosecutor says the 56-year- old is still dangerous. a judge will consider both sides next month. a 9-year-old crashes a car in pennsylvania. philadelphia police say the boy was driving down the road sunday morning when she lost control, flipped the car, crashed into a tree. the boy was taken to a hospital for head injuries and is in stable continue. no word yet on how far he drove or where his parents were at the time. a penny saved is a penny earned. and what if you could track down the best deals with the click of a mouse. >> we're in the market for a new tv. >> that's just the beginning of the wish list for emily

here's a live look outside right now. boy, it's still kind of hazy. >> somewhere, there's a bridge there. >> we still have some rain around, too. we had a little sun this morning. a few peeks this afternoon. but take a look at radar. there's another batch. it's beginning to shrink. but it is still moving across central maryland. baltimore county into the city. and it is shrinking, as you can see. so over the next hour or two, look for a little light rain. and finally, finally it will get out of here. and there's a big improvement coming. we'll show you that in just a minute. take a look at temperatures. it's chilly. 51. yeah, that was yesterday's high, which is really ridiculous this time of year. our normal high is 71. 44, dew point. humidity, 76%. west/northwest winds. and tomorrow, that will allow much dryer air to move in at 8 miles an hour. the barometer now beginning to rise. 41 in oakland. they were pretty much in the 30s all weekend long. and yes, there were light snow flurries in garrett county.

not too far south of oakland, they had about an inch of snow and 4,000 feet there in west virginia. couple of spots there did have a light accumulation of snow on saturday. 53 in washington. 59 in ocean city. we're at 51. around the local area. upper 40s to low to mid-50s. and that's about as warm as it got today. west/northwest winds today, around 8 miles per hour. generally pretty light. tomorrow, they pick up over us. moves out. that will bring us much dryer air. although here in the east, you still see plenty of clouds. just south of richmond, bright sunshine. beautiful weather. in fact, pretty much from west virginia, all the way out to california, hardly a cloud can be seen right now. we have been stuck with this low pressure. it's slowly beginning to mauve out toward new jersey. it will take the clouds with it. and eventually, we start getting some dry are air behind that. and that will be with us for really, looks like high pressure may actually govern our weather for 4, 5, 6, maybe
