scare here. police have thoroughly searched the woods. they still have not captured the man. >> reporter: police scoured an area off woodlawn drive, near the social security administration headquarters, where an ssa employee was shot just before noon. it understand while he was on his lunch break. the motive? police say it was a robbery, a brazen one that put the ssa where almost 12,000 people work on lockdown, as a precaution, because it happened so close to the campus. retired social security worker, cora tucker. >> even when it's not down here, when it's anywhere, you know, that somebody just shooting somebody. that didn't make any -- doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: the victim collapsed near the i-70 overpass. but is expected to survive. this mother who lives feet from the shooting scene, and asked us not to show her face is ned up with the -- fed up with the crime. >> this is showing us that we don't have a conscious anymore.

>> reporter: the manager of her apartment complex was shot to death a year ago. after this, she doesn't feel safe anymore. >> the stuff around here is ridiculous. >> reporter: police are taking away evidence collected at the scene. there was a fast and large response from federal and baltimore county officers as they searched for the gunman. >> reporter: and the commissioner sa -- is saying tonight, employees should be cautious. they are beefing up security at the campus. >> and the victim is being treated at sinai hospital. >> armed and dangerous after police say an officer is forced to open fire. >> well, vic, officers were called for reports of an armed man at the house. it happened here at the 3600 block of st. victor's street. when the suspect refused to comply with repeated orders to

drop the weapon. at least one officer opened fire. the victim's identity is not being released. however, they do say he is a 52- year-old man with no criminal record. >> they are investigating a practice that is standard in police-involved shootings. she lost four years of her life, spent in an italian prison. but just moments ago, amanda knox was set free. >> reporter: amanda knox has left an italian jail. this time for good. an appeals court overturned her conviction for the 2007 murder of her roommate. >> both are acquitted. >> we're thankful that amanda's nightmare is over. >> reporter: earlier in the day, the seattle native made an emotional plea to the jury. speaking in fluent italian, she insisted she had nothing to do with the brutal death of meredith kircher.

>> reporter: i did not kill. i did not rape. i did not steal, knox told the jury. i it wasn't there. >> reporter: knox has spent the last four years behind bars for killing cemper. she and her ex -- cemper. she and her ex-boyfriend, rafael raffaele sollecito were convicted. >> reporter: this case captured the world's attention, with hundreds of reporters and camera crews coming to italy for the verdict. >> reporter: kercher's family flew in. they say meredith has been forgotten in all of this. >> the fear she went through, and not knowing why. and she didn't deserve that. >> reporter: but knox's case got a big boost, when evidence linking the former couple to the crime was unreliable and possibly tainted. >> she suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit. >> reporter: for knox and her family, it's been a long road,

but one that will end with knox back in the u.s. in perugia, italy, monique ming laven. >> knox will leave italy with her family tomorrow. >> you watched a fire destroy a northwest automobile fire here on wjz. the flames could be seen for miles. and now, police say the man who started it worked there. he now faces a host of charges. wjz is live at city police headquarters. derek valcourt has more on the reason he said he did it. derek? >> reporter: detectives say that that employee started the fire because he was upset that one of his coworkers was using his favorite paint brush. >> reporter: it was just one week ago, when the belvedere tire shop erupted into a massive inferno. one week later, the building that housed the family shop was gone. but belvedere was back in,

selling. >> you're like a fighter. you get knocked down and come back up. >> fightfighting back harder. >> reporter: the family who runs the business, well aware that police arrested their employee, jason hicks. police said that hixs got upset that a coworker was using his faimptd paint brush. >> mr. hicks produced a lighter. that ignited one of the flammable substances that was coating a fire and resulted in the three-alarm fire. >> reporter: hicks suffered second-degree burns to his own arm. back at belvedere tire, managers don't think hicks intended to do harm. >> i don't think he got that upset to burn the building down, i don't think. so it was probably just a little playing got out of hand. >> so no hard feelings? >> not at all. he's just a human being. >> reporter: they are going to try to get back to business as usual. >> it's just a blessing they

open. i'm so glad. i've been coming here for years. >> reporter: even without a permanent roof over their heads, they say business goes on because the rubber always meets the road. >> reporter: in court today a judge decided to hold jason hicks in jail, denying him bail. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> hicks faces a long list of criminal charges, including first-degree arson. well, imagine witnessing your own mother's final moments. that's what happened to a maryland man, flying with his mother. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with more on this tragedy. jessica? >> reporter: 48-year-old lanson ross was flying a small plane with his 78-year-old mother. that's when the small plane had mechanical problems. ross and his motor tried swimming ashore in rough waters. but she was not able to continue on. ross was eventually able to make it to land. >> reporter: the plane has not

been found on the national transportation safety board has been called in to investigate. subway scare. baltimore's subway stations, evacuated after people smell potentially dangerous gas. alex demetrick has more. >> this impacts the line that runs downtown baltimore. >> reporter: baltimore has highly sensitive sniffers. while the mta evacuated eight metro stations downtown and sealed them off to riders. >> sir? the subway is closed. closed from mondawmin to johns hopkins. >> reporter: it was all triggered from a 911 call that someone either made from the tunnel or one of the station's platforms, complaining of a strong odor of gas shortly before noon. >> each of the underground subway stations to perform some air quality monitoring. >> reporter: some said they could smell the odor. >> it's real strong down there.

>> life is short. and you are just trying to get home. and now, you might die of an explosion. it's a monday, the workweek. like i'm trying to earn some money to feed my daughter. >> reporter: mta quickly established the bus bridge. and a lot of confusion and inconvenience follows. >> oh, man. that's crazy. >> as a precaution, we wanted to make sure that we got all of the passengers out of there, until the fire department and others could check the system out and make sure the system is safe. >> reporter: and a few hours later, the fire department gave the all-clear. >> we easied and got no-- assessed and got no readings whatsoever of any type of odors, which would certainly limit the threshold. >> reporter: meaning no ambulance rides. just a lot of crowded bises. the -- buses. the good news, by late this afternoon, all of the stations were reopened. and trains began to run. >> reporter: well, since the

stations reopened, there have been a couple of sporadic. >> alex, thank you. the fire department says it's not clear if the odor detected in the 911 call was natural gas or a gasoline smell. well, it's very early october. but sure doesn't feel like it. a live look outside now with chilly temperatures. bob has an updated look at rain on live doppler radar. bob? >> a little bit. take a look at radar. couple of light showers and sprinkles. looks like we'll be dealing with probably a little more of this for the next few hours. around the baltimore region. a batch moved through a little while ago. now, there's another light area of showers. moving down 83. and there's another little batch to the west of us. not heavy. but there were brief showers across west virginia. all of this eventually, eventually, later tonight, will begin to move out. and we do expect to see

sunshine tomorrow. as high pressure builds in. the winds go back to the northwest. looks like a very nice weather pattern, finally setting up over the region. and temperatures will be on the increase. but over the last three days, saturday's high was 59. normal, 72. yesterday, 51 was the high. and that was the record for the lowest minimum on that date. the normal being 72. and today, 56 the high. the normal is now down to 71 degrees. looks like we finally get back to normal. or even above normal, over the next four on five day -- four to five days. ravens are flying high. feeling pretty good, a quarter of the way through the season. sports director mark viviano joins us now. >> the guys in purple and blue calor. we know they won the super bowl about a decade ago, with a dom nant dallas. -- dominant dallas. this year's defense has the look of one that could also be

championship caliber. >> reporter: it's a defense that is show-stopping and eye- popping. just as they did in week 1 against the steelers, the ravens made a wreck of the new york jets. jumping all over jittery qb mark sanchez, forcing five fumbles. two that were returned for touchdowns, this one guy jared johnson. they suffered three tds. ravens continue to fly high on the wings of their defense. ask they're looking as good as ever. >> i guess when you go back and watch the film, you can rate that. i'll let you guys rate that. i think for us, the next best defensive performance is always the next one for us. >> we're developing our killer instincts. we have to. but it's a long season, man. and we just gotta keep building on that, and continue to get turnovers. >> we'll see where it takes us. but i couldn't be more proud of this team. you either do or you don't. and those guys didn't. >> reporter: we asked -- those

the first slots casino is open -- is the center for controversy. a 100-foot sign is dividing the community. >> reporter: martin mcclary is among the estimated 800,000 drivers who passed by the casino. but if he hadn't taken a wrong turn, he never would have known it was there. that's why the casino wants to put up a 170-foot sign. >> i might stop in just -- but it wouldn't be, you know, how high are my priorities. but we'd stop in to see if the food is any good, have a look around. >> i think it's a bad idea. because we live across the bridge, i think it would be disruptive. >> but at the same time, if it caused more economic growth for

>> the perryville casino has grossed more than $100 million since it opened last year. baltimore native josh charles returned home this weekend to take in the ravens game. mary joins us now with more on the local boy done good. >> reporter: it's something the local actor does a lot. because like so many of us, he is an obsessed football fan. >> actor josh charles. you see his true color, purple. a ravens patch on his arm. >> years ago, i once turned a movie down. and the ravens weren't even very good at that point. so that will give you an idea of how big of a ravens fan i am. >> reporter: last year, charles spent time on the sideline, a thrill for the actor. >> the ravens winning sadly affects my emotional state more than it probably should, considering i just turned 40.

here's a live look outside now. we saw the sun for a few moments this evening. just a few moments. >> i'm pretty confident that over the next several days, we'll have a lot more sun. a lot less clouds. and it's going to get a lot warmer. it's going to feel pretty nice. take a look at radar. it's still a few areas of light rain, moving down from the northwest. low pressure is beginning to pull out. so all of this precip will eventually, later this evening, get out of here. but we still have a little light rain coming down from pennsylvania that will probably move across the baltimore area, very shortly. not a lot of stabbing. some places won't even see a drop. but you might see some drizzles and sprinkles out to the west of us as well. a little more out there in washington, allegheny county. take a lock at temperatures

now. -- the been chilly all day long. 52, 52. 50, only 41 in oakland. most of the weekend, garrett county, was in the 30s. and they did get some light snow flurry activity. in fact, south of oakland, in some of the mountains there, in west virginia, and along the skyline, dry. as much as an inch of wet snow. fell on saturday. and each friday night. 54 now in ocean city. locally, right around the 50- degree mark. a little higher, where we saw a little bright sunshine, moving through a little bit. west winds now. tomorrow will be the west/northwest wind. that will be dryer air and even yes, sunshine. should be with us, like most of the country, from florida to california. hardly a cloud to be seen, except here in the northeast. well, we're stuck at the first storm of the winter fall season coming into the northwest, causing rain there in seattle and washington, oregon area. out there, they'll probably see some decent rain. even had thundershowers near

san francisco for the first time in about six months. rain, you see it wrapping around this low pressure. but it's beginning to pull out toward new jersey and northeast of our region. so we'll start to see a diminishing area of clouds and precipitation. finally, as high pressure builds in, nice, dry for the most part, sunny conditions. looks like for the rest of the week, into the weekend, and a nice warmup. temperatures coming back up, a little above normal. northwest winds at 10 to 15 knots. and the small craft advisory on the bay tomorrow. bay temp dropped with all of this cool rain down to that 66 degrees. tonight, then, still a few showers. and then patchy clouds later on. mid-40s. a chilly night. then tomorrow, partly sunny by afternoon. may start off cloudy. given a little fog and much milder than today. back up in the upper 60s. low 70s for the rest of the week. our normal high for tomorrow is around 70. so it would be even warmer than that most of the week. >> wonderful. thank you, bob. still to and on wjz eyewitness news.

it is just before 6:30. mostly cloudy. 52 degrees. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. reaction is pouring in to the verdict of the amanda knox appeals trial. just a short time ago, she was cleared of killing her roommate. and mary has more on the ruling and reaction to it. >> reporter: well, mary, knox was just released from her italian prison, after serving four years of hard time, according to a friend who was with her as she left the prison, she just wants to go home and restart her life. the appeals court found her not guilty of killing her roommate in 2007. friends watched in washington state and reacted to the news. to amanda herself, we say, way to go, kid. we look forward to welcoming

cooper, who described one of the short conversations she had with dr. murray on june 25th, 2009, the day jackson was rushed to ucla medical center. >> i asked him what happened. >> and what did he say? >> he reported that mr. jackson had been working very hard, that he was , he thought -- dehydrated. >> reporter: dr. cooper told the court, jackson died before he reached the hospital. she gaif permission for paramedics to pronounce him dead after they tried to resuscitate him at his home. but they asked for additional treatment at the hospital. >> but there was no chance of treating mr. jackson, was there, successfully? >> from what i know now? no. but at the same time, i had a 50-year-oldman male who was dead. and in my mind, there are many are the conditions that may cause a cardiac arrest. i therefore asked information on the history. >> reporter: dr. cooper testified she asked murray what medications jackson may have been taking. and dr. murray never mentioned

propofol. >> reporter: prosecutors say murray gave jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic that led to his death. the defense claims jackson gave the propofol to himself when murray left the room. afterward, they called an at&t representative to the stand to talk about jackson -- murray's phone calls. >> reporter: if convicted on the manslaughter charge, dr. murray faces four years in prison. stay with wjz for the latest on the jackson court crile. -- trial. a rabid cat is causing some concern in one cecil county town tonight. the cat bit two people near rising sun high school. they were attacked near a parking lot. the cat died and tested positive at the state health department. anyone scratched or bitten by an unknown cat in the last week is urged to call their doctor.

you've certainly noticed by now, but gas prices are the lowest they have been in months. rye now, we -- right now, we are paying an average of $3.57, -- $3.21. how low will they go? and how long will it last? >> reporter: pumped up recently? you might get a pleasant surprise. >> well, if the gas prices were a little lower. $3.31. >> reporter: the price for gas is the lowest it's been in months. >> it's going to be great. great and beautiful. [ laughter ] >> reporter: the national average dropped 17 cents within the past month to $3.45 a gallon. for drivers in baltimore, pumping up was even less painful, with drivers taking advantage of prices around $3.30 a gallon. >> yeah, i fill up my tank all the way now. >> reporter: triple a says the drop shouldn't be a shock. >> we typically see gas prices come down somewhat during this time of year. >> filling up could cost you

less in the coming months. analysts are predicting prices could be going up. >> that being said, they don't want people to be too comfortable because the price prices will likely rebound at the beginning of 2012. >> doesn't surprise me. prices always go up and down. >> reporter: prices at the pump may be going up and down. but they're still not necessarily low. >> reporter: the national average is still 76 cents higher than a year ago. still, most drivers welcome any drop. >> i'm happy they're down for now. >> reporter: monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> u.s. drivers are on track to spend $490 billion on gas this year. that's the most in history. engineers are once again inspecting the earthquake- damaged washington monument. the earthquake caused numerous cracks. and the engineers are removing loose stone and mortar. because of the weather-related delays, it's unclear now when this work will be finished.

concerns at a fire near a chemical plant. black smoke could be seen for hours. the epa says the vapor has been detected. the plant's manager says all of the employees got out safely. and an eight-block area around the having has been evacuated. an suv crashed. there were no injuries. the driver was able to escape before the fire started. a decision to move the south carolina primary changes the calendar for republican

wow, what a win. number 1. mark is here with the wjz the fan sports report. >> it would be hard to convince any ravens fan that any victory isn't beautiful. ravens are going to take it. much for the ravens to celebrate. they are alone in first place. the ravens defense, dom nant. they grounded the new york jets in prime time. but the game brought some renewed concerns about joe flacco and the ravens' offense. coming off the best game of his career a week ago, last night, one of the worst for the qb. last night, it was a short toss to ray rice that turned into a big 52-yard game gain. it was the biggest offense. but flacco completed less than a third-s passes. suffered a fumble. flacco did not complete a pass in the second or third quarter. misfired on 12 straight attempts at one point. for the assessments on what went wrong.

>> well, it was a variety of things. a good defense. defense pressures you. i think you saw on both sides that kind of happened. that was sort of the theme in that game, no doubt. but there were times the guys recovered. there were times the pressure got to him and he had to throw it around. and there were times where some balls, because of that, just weren't quite on the money. >> it just kind of happens that way. obviously, it was a cold streak. you know, i don't know. i don't really know it what to do. you gotta go out there and continue to do it. and continue to grind. >> reporter: flacco has completed less than 50% of his passes this season. his completion percentage and overall passer rating are at their worst in his four-year career. well, the ravens do reach the bye week. extra rest. time for injuries to heal. then back to action. when the houston texans come to town. that will be a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. now, the tixans did the ravens a favor in houston yesterday. not only did they beat the

steelers. they put a hurting on houston qb ben roethlisberger. on this late hit, roethlisberger suffered a sprained left foot. further exam today revealed no broken bones, but there could be structural damage. he stayed in the game and threw this interception to end a desperate comeback. the steelers will play tennessee sunday. it is unclear at this time if roethlisberger will be able to play. no word from the orioles on the status of team president andy macphail. an announcement on his future is expected any day, after macphail had met with owner peter angelos and buck showalter. showalter could move up to the front office. the play-offs are under way. the yankees find themselves in a fight with the tigers in the division series. freddie garcia and the yanks lost to the tigers. miguel cabrera's home run got the score.
