>> the wild attack inside, forced a wal-mart to be evacuated and made headlines across the nation. eyewitness news is live. jessica kartalija has revelations from the bail hearing with teresa jefferson. >> reporter: well, vic, it's a bizarre love triangle that proved to be dangerous for one woman and a host of other shoppers who were caught in the crossfire. and tonight issue the suspect, the defendant in this case, is sitting behind bars. >> reporter: 33-year-old theressa jefferson is accused of throwing bleach and pine- solo her ex-boyfriend, kevin pinel's fiance, in a lansdowne wal-mart. she and 18 other shoppers were taken to area hospitals for treatment. nows are a judge orders jefferson's bail will stand at $350,000. >> basically, we've -- we're asking for a bail that would assure the safety of our victims. i think the $350,000 will do that. >> reporter: charging documents say the victim, ebony odems and parnell, had filed a

restraining order against jefferson. >> reporter: saturday's attack at wal-mart happened before that restraining order could be served. >> reporter: the boyfriend in the center of this bizarre love triangle appeared in today's bail hearing, as did his father, but in support of the defendant, not his son. >> i'm not going to stand for my son when he's wrong. when he's wrong, he's wrong. why am am i going to stand next to him if he's wrong? >> it's like wagging the tail of a dog. when you consider the family of the alleged victim, ms. pinel, were here to indicate that their son and the other alleged victim have engaged in a pattern of harassment. >> reporter: parnell and his ex- girlfriend, theresa jefferson have been on bail for assaulting her two months ago. >> theresa is a nice gill. >> what did your son think about you being here today?

>> he was shocked. he was shocked. >> reporter: and his son, partnery, refused to talk with us on camera. a court date has yet to be set. live outside of the detention center, i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> what a mess, jeb jessica. -- jessica. thank you. drug smugglers are getting increasingly more creative, in their attempt to get drugs into the united states. mary is in the newsroom with the surprising picture you have to see to believe. >> reporter: customs and border protection officers at dulles made the surprising discovery. take a look. cocaine-filled bedpost knobs. they arrived as part of a group of goods carried by a courier from el salvador. agents were experience suspicious and called for some of the items to be x-rayed. and that's when they found the cocaine inside the bed posts. the drug his a street value more than $17,000 and were bound for a location in new york. >> the courier was apparently

unaware of what he was transporting and was sent back to el salvador. a plot to assassinate the saudi arabian ambassador to the fuzz. -- to the united states. >> reporter: federal officials say they broke a plot by the iranian government to assassinate the saudi ambassador to the united states, abdul aljabear on american soil. >> this conspiracy was conceived, sponsored and was directed from iran and constitutes a flagrant violation of u.s. and international law. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder says the justice department will take action against the iranian government, as early as tuesday. >> we will not let other countries use our soil as their battleground. >> reporter: two people were charged in federal court in new york. federal agents say one of them, golem shakury is a member of iran's special operations unit, known as the cut force, and is still at large in iran.

federal agents arrested 56-year- old monsour bonbear in new york on september 29th. the justice department says he offered an undercover dea agent, posing as a member of a mexican drug cartel, $1.5 million to carry out the assassination with bombs. >> reporter: a spokesman for the iranian mission to the united nations says the country's government categorically reject what is he calls the baseless allegations. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton says the thwarted plot will further isolated the country. >> in many ways, this brings the iran question, with all of its prickly parts back to the floor. >> reporter: the justice department says no one was ever in danger. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the whoises spokesman says president obama was first briefed on the plot in june. fighter jets scrambled to

get a plane out of the air, forcing it to land at bwi marshall. now, weijia jiang has more on homeland security in action. >> reporter: the government wasted no time getting this plane out of the sky. they say they did not want to take any chances. the governor says this is just one case that shows exactly what -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: 6:30 monday night. a civilian plane enters a restricted air space, above the nation's capital. >> reporter: although 9/11 happened 10 years ago, we still, first and foremost in our minds. and it's scary. >> reporter: the air force scrambles to send two fighter jets to escort the plane out of the area, forcing a landing at bwi thurgood marshall. authorities describe it as a general aviation aircraft out of communications. >> if you are a trained pilot, that shouldn't be happening. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after that, federal and state leaders came here to the university of maryland college park, to have an intimate discussion about the incident and ways to keep our country

safe. >> homeland security really has to begin with hometown security. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of homeland security, janet napolitano, and governor martin o'malley, led a forum about terrorism since 9/11, pointing to how crucial information is to deal with incidents like the one at bwi. they also address concerns about home-grown attacks. >> and a lone actor is a very difficult law enforcement thing to prevent. so let's not minimize the problem. it's real. it's difficult, and we struggle with it every day. >> reporter: just last month, wjz uncovered chilling new details about antonio martinez, a maryland teenager accused of trying to detonate explosives at a military recruiting center. he told informants, all he thinks about is jihad. >> this improves our ability to quickly respond. >> reporter: quickly responding to potential threats, exactly how out-of-place planes are removed. >> reporter: and the faa tells

us they're still investigating to see exactly what that plane was doing in restricted territory. we can tell you the pilot met with local authorities last night. reporting live at bwi thurgood marshall. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, thank you, weijia. the faa has not released the name of the pilot. testimony resumes in the trial of powerful senator ulysses currie, accused of using has influence to benefit a grocery store chain. mike schuh with the latest on the prosecution's case. mike? >> reporter: vic, what senator currie calls a consulting agreement, the government calls robbery. today, a trail of documents proving the link. >> reporter: when senator ulysses currie marched into court today, he was greeted by documents from shoppers warehouse, describing his connection to the country. the prosecutors say currie accepted $245,000 from shoppers over a five-year period.

currie did not disclose what he calls a consulting job, on state house ethics forms. there are many instances of currie trying to influence state officials, in a way that would benefit shoppers. >> reporter: on the stand, secretary for kevin small. the shoppers vice president who is also part of this case. small wrote to the vice president about what senator currie had done for the company. >> enclosed is a list of projects that senator currie is currently working on with us. saying he brought together state officials, helped speed development and the transfer of a liquor license. all along, currie's public defender says, what the senator did may be a conflict of interest, but that is a long way away from bribery and extortion. >> reporter: it's obvious that shoppers thought nothing wrong with this arrangement. they did nothing wrong to try to hide it. and there are volumes of documents talking about this consulting agreement and the costs, including one that was entered into court today, which

showed that senator currie's amount that he was given was $none,000 a year -- $91,000 a year in 2007. reporting live in federal court, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. vic, back to you on tv hill. >> among the politicians expected to testify for the defense, governor martin o'malley, former governor robert ehrlich, and the lieutenant governor, anthony brown. after a nice break from the rain. the wet weather is coming back. clouds are rolling in. and bob turk is in the weather center, with a look at first warning doppler radar. >> first of all, it won't be anything like we saw last month. we're in august. we're going to get some rain. down to the south, it's wet. but very, very light, honestly. for the time being, don't expect to see anything, except maybe a couple of sprinkles and light rain. late tonight and during the day tomorrow. it can get a little heavier. as an area of low pressure moves up to our region. the rain will also be following it. look for rain moving in during the daytime hours.

and a couple of spots might be moderate to heavy. but most of the rain, looks like it will be north of us, northwest of us, or east of us, looking generally at a half to maybe an inch of rain across much of central maryland. so wet wednesday, probably some showers thursday. and again, even into early friday. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. harnessing the wind. governor martin o'malley promotes wind power, despite the potential cost increase to marylanders. wjz is live. pat warren has more on what voters think about that. >> reporter: according to a new gonzalez poll, the majority of marylanders are willing to invest in a new source of injury. >> reporter: -- energy. >> reporter: it's no surprise, the american wind association is holding its offshore wind farm. >> i'd like us to pass the bill. pass the bill. pass the bill. >> pass the bill. >> but the general assembly chose to study it instead.

the governor will try again next year. this time, backed by a poll that suggests marylanders would be willing to pay more for wind power. to a point. >> they're saying, look, we're willing to make this up-front investment for all of the many benefits that come with offshore wind power. >> reporter: 805 voters answered this statement. i would be willing to pay $2 more per month if mine came from clean, offshore local wind farms. 62% said yes. 32% said no. >> i think in an era of austerity. and tightinning of belts all around, i think it's a pretty affirmative statement that the people of our state understand the connection to jobs, understand the connections to the environment, and understand the connection that that sort of choice makes for that cleaner, renewable energy future that is both more secure and also contributes to greater american prosperity. >> reporter: still, it's hard to nail down just what the cost to consumers would be in the long run, which is what made the idea such a hard sale this

the suspect in the murder of a young woman inside an upscale athletics shop goes on trial in less than a week. and tonight, we are hearing from the family. >> reporter: jayna murray was killed in may, and her coworker is accused of the gruesome crime. >> reporter: davis and phyllis murray say from an early age, their daughter's life was filled with love and laughter. she loved dance, world travel and helping those in need. she had a future as bright as

her smile. until march 11th, when the murray family's world would unravel in a web of crime scene tape and a late-night phone call from lulu lemon's chief financial officer. >> there was a death at lulu lemon and that one had been taken to the hospital. within about 10 minutes, she called us back to tell us that jayna had -- was the one that they had pronounced dead. >> reporter: within days, another shocking development. >> that they had made an arrest. and my immediate reaction was, thank god. then when he said who it was -- it was incomprehensible. >> it was baffling. just stunning. >> reporter: under arrest, coworker britney norwood, who police say lured jayna back to the store after closing time and attacked her with such violence, even veteran homicide

detectives were shaken. the incomprehensible murder, believed to be over a bag of lulu lemon clothing that norwood may have been trying to steal. >> why would you murder someone over lulu lemon clothes? >> reporter: if britney norwood needed this so badly for whatever -- >> jayna would have bought it for her. >> absolutely. >> she would have given it to her. she would have paid for it herself. >> reporter: phyllis and david murray and their sons hugh and dirk and extended family are now struggling to find the new normal of their lives. the murrays are now preparing for the murder trial and bracing themselves for the likelihood that they will come face to face with britney norwood and her parents. >> it's horrible for us. it can't be easy for them. >> of all of the steps of grieving, i have yet to leave anger. i think if i had a chance to say something to her, it would be one word. why? >> and jayna murray's parent

says she never spoke of a problem employee, only of how much she loved working at the store as a manager. denise? >> thank you, mary. britney norwood's trial is scheduled to begin october 24th. a gas line forces people from their home. the contractor struck a 4-inch gas line. six homes were evacuated for about an hour before the line was fixed. a local charter school is once again being recognized for its dedication to help students. >> reporter: kids can't always control their excitement. but for these students, the frenzy is for good reason. >> because we're going to the white house to meet the president and michelle obama. >> reporter: kevin kowser is one of 100 kids from hampstead hill academy who hopped on a

bus to meet the first lady. >> she's trying to break the guinness book of world records for number of kids doing jumping jacks. >> reporter: it's all part of michelle obama's let's move program. an initiative to find ways to get kids activity. -- active. and these kids seem to love it. >> it's an effort to end childhood obesity and promote health and nutrition. >> reporter: childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years. in maryland, it affects 19% of children ages 6 to 11. hampstead hills' garden is one of the ways they are getting children to eat better. >> it's very nice. we get to eat healthy. >> tomatoes, jalapenos, a lot of healthy stuff in our garden. >> reporter: but this isn't the first time that hampstead hills and the healthy eating has had the white house calling. >> they got a call from

here's a live look outside right now. centennial park today. the leaves really are starting to change, rather rapidly. >> certain varieties are starting to change. they're dropping levers like crazy. and it's just going to get worse. and tomorrow, with the rain, you'll have some wet leaves. that means maybe some slippery roads here. be careful. those leaves get really slippery. looking at the temperatures right now. it hasn't really dropped much at all. high was at 72. right now, we're at 71. 70 in washington. oakland at 59.

ocean city at 66. a little light rain this afternoon. south of the region. very light. some light rain in virginia. a little heavier south and west of the region. we'll be looking at that later tonight, moving into the western areas. 70, rock hall, kent island, annapolis and d.c. once again, bel air at 69. northeast winds. those will stay with us tonight and tomorrow. may get a little stronger. and they're bringing moisture in, low levels from the atlantic ocean. so it just gets wetter and wetter. humidity builds. and eventually, we'll start seeing showers out of these clouds. most of the activity, across the carolinas, georgia area. south carolina, north carolina. slowly moving in our direction. also, that flow off the ocean will continue to feed that. but looks like areas west of us, particularly the higher land, and higher ground. mountain areas, garrett county, western p.a., sections of new york state, with the wind coming off the ocean, it gets lifted up. and we'll see what we call

orographic lifting. in other words, the air is forced up where it forces out the moisture. it's sort of like lake-effect snow up in western new york, where the land just goes up. and the snow just comes down. this will not be a snow event. way too warm. but looks like heavier showers west of us, southeast of us. we'll see some of this rain in the carolinas moving in tonight and tomorrow. mostly late tonight. and on thursday, unfortunately, looks like we might see some additional shower activity. because of a front out to the west. that front is going to kind of bring some moisture up from the south. in addition to the front itself, we'll have shower activity. but early on friday, before it begins to clear out, and turn dryer and cooler for the weekend. east winds on the bay, kind of strong, up to 20 knots. and a small craft advisory. bay temp, around 67. tonight, look for rain and rain developing overnight. 58 tonight. looks like a wet day, at least most of the day, with cooler temps and a breeze. tomorrow's high, in the mid- 60s. so pack the poncho tomorrow. days after michael jackson's death. >> were you aware of any other medications he was taking? >> i was not aware of other medications he was taking. but i heard that he was seeing a dr. klein, three days a week. >> reporter: on the tape, murray says he believes jackson was getting drugs from a dermatologist. prosecutors allege it was murray who carelessly overdosed his patient with the anesthetic propofol and then he failed to correctly monitor him. jackson's defense team says it was jackson himself who administered the fatal overdose. >> reporter: murray also talked about how jackson's children learned their father was dead. >> so they cried and cried and cried. and real sad. real sad.

>> reporter: murray also calmly told police detectives about how he broke the news to jackson's mother and held her hand while she cried. kendis gibson, wjz eyewitness news. >> check in with wjz for complete coverage of the death trial of michael jackson. count on us to bring you the latest developments from the courtroom. a new search is under way for the missing 10-month-old baby girl from kansas city. mary is in the newsroom with more on where crews are focusing now. mary? >> reporter: crews have turned their attention to a vacant kansas city home. the home is just five blocks from where the house where lisa irwin was reported missing by her parents. jeremy and debbie said that she disappeared. they said know some must have crept into the family home while the dad was at work. the crews are looking into a well. the house itself was abandoned for four years. >> neither parent is named as a suspect but bradley said police

told her she failed a lie detector test. another bid for a maryland man. an attorney for gary giordano is asking the court to release him immediately, or at least let him go, pending any trial. giordano is being held on the presumed death of 35-year-old robyn gardner. he denies any wrongdoing, saying she was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. going on trial on unrelated larceny charges. yonathon milacue. he is scheduled to plead to the charges against him. the latest republican debate takes place tonight at dartmouth in new hampshire. mitt romney has picked up a key endorsement. randall pinkston has the latest. >> reporter: a major endorsement for mitt romney.

popular b.o.b. jogging strollers are being recalled because of choking concerns. the consumer product safety commission says the backing on a patch can come loose. the strollers were sold at r.e.i., babies r us, between 1998 and 2011. for years, scientists have been studying the potential benefits of taking vitamin e and the mineral selenium for prostate cancer. now, a new report shows this could be putting men at risk for the disease. sandra hughes reports for wjz. >> reporter: ralph sanderson decided to be an experiment to see whether vitamin e could prevent him from getting prostate cancer. he was healthy and had no family history of the disease. >> i had a couple of friends who had had prostate cancer. and i thought this would be worth doing. >> reporter: now, new findings show the vitamin e sanders took

has put him at higher risk for the disease. >> men who took the vitamin e alone were at a 17% greater risk for developing prostate cancer. >> reporter: the study looked at healthy men who took vitamin e, the mineral selenium or a placebo. >> we don't know why men who took vitamin e were at higher risk for prostate cancer. interestingly, those who took vitamin e and selenium were not at higher risk. >> the dose they took was more than found in standard daily vitamins. >> reporter: he has no regrets in participating in the research. >> i do feel as though we learned something. >> reporter: researchers will study to see if their cancer risk decreases over time. >> reporter: in los angeles, sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> the clinical trial also shows no benefits from taking

caught on tape, a stickup at a houston gas station doesn't go the way the robbers planned. two men hop into the store with handguns, shooting the clerk in the leg. he then grabs a gun and fires back. police caught one alleged robber who was hit in the arm. the other man is still on the loose. well, he isn't your typical terror suspect. the trial for the so-called underwear bomber is in detroit. manuel gallegus has more. >> reporter: umar farouq abdulmutallab sat quietly in court as the prosecution described him as a will terrorist. he was labeled an al qaeda operative, determined to kill

all 300 people on board his flight from amsterdam to detroit, on christmas day two years ago. >> reporter: prosecutor jonathan tuckle told jurors, the 24-year-old nigerrian, went into the plane's bathroom put on perfume and prayed, prepared to die in flight as a martyr. he had hidden bomb in his underwear. the first witness described a loud pop like a firecracker. a man seated next to abdulmutallab yelled, "dude, your pants are on fire." but there was no response. several passengers put him on the floor to put him out. >> reporter: they made no opening statements to the three men and nine women of the jury. >> reporter: in an early defeat for the defense, the judge refused to ban the word "bomb "from the trial. >> everyone assumes that he had a bomb. the statute requires that the prosecution prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was an explosive device. >> reporter: but prosecutors

allege that before abdul abdulmutallab even got off the plane, he confessed to a flight attendant and another passenger that he was trying to blow up a bomb on the jetliner. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> abdul mutalab is charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism and attempted murder. he faces up to life in prison if convicted. a switcheroo scam. one man asks questions to distract the jewel rear -- jeweler while the other takes another bag. they both walk away. so far, they don't have leads, but the store owner believes they have scammed other shops before. one self-proclaimed hero. phoenix jones. he is a crime fight ner washington. police are accusing jones of pepper spraying a group of people who he says were

bye week is over. time to gear up for this coming game. mark is here with the wjz the fan sports report. . >> it is back to work for sure. four games into this ravens season. baltimore certainly has the look of a championship contender. 3-1 record. first place in the afc north division. and the ravens' defense, as dominant as ever. what about the offense, though? in a play-off, quarterback joe flacco, one quarter into the season. it is fair to say his play has been up and down. certainly down over a win over the jets. jets return this interception for a touchdown. but looking at flacco and the offense overall, coach john harbaugh has used the bye week to assess what he has seen so far. >> just a little specific situation, things were doing well. other things, not doing so well. we just try to break all of that stuff down and see where we can get better. but i think he's playing well
