sudden reversal. a terror trial comes to a surprising end. >> the underwear bomber's chilling statement in court. >> hi. i'm kai jackson! i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. the underwear bomber issues a threat. the terror suspect admits he tried to blow up an airliner and warns the united states will pay. manuel gallegus reports. >> reporter: umar farouq abdulmutallab pled guilty to all eight charges against him, including attempt to commit murder, conspiracy to commit terrorism. >> he just changed his mind. i can't get into his mind why. >> reporter: his court- appointed lawyer didn't want him to do it. >> he's a young man who may be

misguided, i think a young man who is impressionable. >> reporter: the 21-year-old nijeer yan admitted he tried to bring down a plane. in a statement he read aloud in clear english, abdulmutallab told the court he wanted to take down the plane to fulfill a religious obligation, participate in jihad and to retaliate against the u.s. for its relationship with israel. and for killing his brothers and sisters worldwide. >> reporter: his lawyer says they don't know why he pled guilty. but the prosecution was led to declare a number guilty. >> he did the right thing by pleading guilty. he needs to be responsible for what he did. accountable for it. and he needs to be punished and rehabilitated. >> reporter: abdulmutallab's statement ended with a threat, that the u.s. will eventually pay for what it has done.

in detroit, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> attorney general eric holder says today's outcome shows u.s. courts are effective in fighting terrorism and keeping american people safe. a new terror warning. it comes after the fbi foiled what they're calling an assassination plot. denise is in the newsroom with more on alert for all americans tonight. denise? >> well, mary, the state department is warning everyone to stay alert for potential terror attacks sponsored by iran. the worldwide warnings come after two men, one an american, are charged with plotting to kill the saudi ambassador to the u.s. the special operations unit launched the plan last springs. the plot involves planting a bomb inside a washington restaurant, as the ambassador dined. mary? >> thank you. the state department is talking with its allies about placing new international sanctions on iran. they say no option is off the

table. abandoning the argument. today in court, dr. conrad murray's attorneys say they're dropping the claim michael jackson ingested the fatal drugs that killed him. kendis gibson reports from los angeles. >> reporter: a cardiologist who reviewed dr. conrad murray's care found six instances of gross negligence on the day he died. >> all those deviations, all directly impacted has life. because if these deviations would not have happened, mr. jackson would have been alive. >> reporter: jackson died in his mansion in los angeles, from an overdose of propofol in june of 2009. >> reporter: the defense delivered a big surprise when it dropped its claims that michael jackson gave himself the fatal dose. >> reporter: the jury was out of the room when michael flanagan shows that any effect

from swallowing propofol would be trivial. it's a step for the defense. murray's witnesses are expected to step up. >> dr. murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter and faces four years in prison if convicted. we are facing sad news. patricia model, the wife of former ravens owner art modell, has died. mrs. model spent the last four months in the hospital before passing away this afternoon. she was a long-running actress, known for her roles on a couple of shows. the couple was known for their charity. they renamed the arthur and patricia model center. she was 80 years old. new weapons into an insight

inside a lansdowne wal-mart. andrea fujii is in the newsroom. >> reporter: the cleaning product spike temporarily shut down the baltimore county wal- mart for hours. >> baltimore county, 911. what's the address of the emergency? >> there's a fight in the middle of wal-mart, on washington boulevard. you need to get some radio cars up here real quick. >> are there weapons involved? >> no. but they're using chemicals to throw at each other. >> throwing chemicals? >> yes. >> throwing beach on each other? >> yeah. >> 33-year-old teresa jefferson is being held on $350,000 bond. she's charged with assault and theft. the fight is related to what police are calling a heated love triangle. police say stephanie odems was the intended victim in the attack. she was in a relationship with jefferson's love interest. a fatal accident is under

investigation in anne arundel county. just after 7:30 this morning, a car crashed in pasadena. killed when a car went out of control. wet roads and speeds are likely factors in the crash. city leaders want. thanks to a $2 million federal grant, they'll get it. and ilprove standback lines. while waiting across the street. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake also says 11 city schools will start a walking school bus program that allows parents and volunteers to walk with students to and from school every day. >> it's a great day inside. here's a live look; well, some rain is falling under just gray and dreary skies.

consultation. back over to you. speeding down city streets will be legal again next year for three days. the baltimore grand prix returns next labor day weekend. pat warren has more on what, if anything, will change next year. >> reporter: race officials say they're looking for possible areas of improvement. >> reporter: an estimated 150,000 people attended baltimore's inaugural grand prix over the labor day weekend. and businesses like the pratt street ale house told wjz, it worked to their advantage. >> labor day weekend is not a weekend we look forward to, in the restaurant business downtown. this is one for the books. >> reporter: they tell wjz's midia partner, the baltimore sun, that officials are looking at improvements, like more crossover bridges around the court. mayor rawlings-blake is very positive about the event. >> i think it had a big impact on the city. we're waiting for the visit baltimore review of the evaluation of the actual economic impact to come in.

a tennessee pastor is busted for stealing pills and it is all caught on tape. an elderly woman who takes painkillers for shoulder injuries set up a hidden camera when she noticed her pills were disappearing. when she set the playback, she noticed her priest breaking into her home. the pastor is charged with aggravated burglary. he may have other victims. a call for help from a corn maze. >> i'm really scared. it's really dark. and we've got a 3-week-old baby with us. >> calm down. >> the couple and two children called 911, after hours of trying to find their way out. of this corn maze in massachusetts. it is massive. police arrived a few minutes later to help them find their way to the end.

a virginia father builds a treehouse for his two sons, just as he promised after he returned from iraq. but as lindsey mathis reports, he may have to break it down. >> it was promised to me on my last deployment to iraq. >> mark said he spent six weeks building this treehouse with his son. they're scouts. >> he earned his merit badge, his public speaking merit badge. >> reporter: but the treehouse might have to come down. he said he called fairfax county's building office, and he says he was told that he didn't need a building permit. >> i had no idea there was a zoning ordinance office that i had to step through. >> reporter: he spent $1400 in materials to build it, $1900 to the county, but they still say it has to come down. >> yes. but also, what else can we do? >> the zoning board of appeals will hear an appeal at the end

of november. he says if he loses again, he may just take his case to district court. another big rally on wall street. the dow once again posted triple digits. dow was up 103. s&p up 12. nasdaq up 22. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. stocks rallied. and the dow turned positive for the year. as europe takes bold steps to curve its financial crisis. the president of the european commission presented a plan to strengthen european banks and lower debt. analyst says it is the strongest effort yet to address the region's debt problem. u.s. employers advertised fewer jobs in august than the previous month. the labor department says it is the first drop in openings in the first month. and there is still heavy competition for each position. nearly 14 million people were out of work in august, which means an average of 4.6

>> karen, that's just cruel. i love you, but come on. >> let's go back to the beach. >> i'm ready. >> take a look at radar. we're finally getting rain. most of the day, it's just been cloudy and gray and cool. but right now, the rain moving into the area. there you see it. but it's not going to last that long. i think by 7:00, the bulk will be through the region. frederick, liberty town. now, in the city, a pretty good batch of rain. now, just west of the beltway, that's moving right across western sections of the city. liberty road area. reisterstown area, maybe towards owiptions mills. -- owings mills. heavy showers right near columbia, 29 and route 70 area. south of the city, a few more areas of heavy showers. these moving off to the east/northeast. i think by 7:00, 8:00, we're pretty much done with it. and overnight, some fog will form around the region as all of this rain leaves here. in fact, up until 4:00, the

airport has had a trace of rain. obviously that's going to change for now. take a look at temperatures. low 60s been here all day long. east/northeast winds at 10. 52, oakland. 70 in pax river. there is some warmer air down to the south. that will be with us tomorrow. we should get into the low to mid-70s. and with that said, warmer temperatures tomorrow, a front coming through. we're going to see some shower and thunderstorm activity developing late tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night. still 67, kent island, annapolis. got the east/northeast wind, bringing in the cool, damp air from the ocean. look at that. up at 21 on the ocean. pretty raw, nasty day. here's the low pressure underachieved for the baltimore region. most of it was north and west of us. this next front out to the west, has some energy with it. and that's going to bring a risk of more shower activity tomorrow night into friday, early afternoon. and it could be moderate shower activity. could even see a thundershower. but this, as you can see, to the west of it, is cleared up.

crash. two others were seriously injured. potentially deadly peanut allergies could soon become a thing of the past, as scientists find a way to turn off allergic reactions upon. >> scientists at northwestern university say they have figured out a way to trick the immune system, shutting off allergic reactions reactions to peanuts and other foods. they attached peanut proteins to blood cells braun from mice then reintroduced them into the mice's body. when the mice were fed a peanut extract, there was no allergic reaction. they say the immune system recognizes the peanut protein as safe since it's already presence -- present in the body. but they are still years away from testing on people. >> every year, more than 100 americans die every year from food allergic reactions. it's been cloudy and cool all day. now, light rain is falling here on tv hill. wjz has weather and traffic

together. bob is tracking first warning doppler radar. >> actually, this is the bulk of rain we've expected earlier. unfortunately, drive time not great. but we have rain in the region. moderate to heavy in a few spots. south of us, much lighter. in the frederick area, portions of howard and montgomery county. some light rain in the city. heaviest activity, finks burg to the southwest of the beltway down there, from columbia to arbutus, linthicum area. and south of the city, another little batch of rain. heavy stuff there, from south of the anne arundel county line, through calvert county and the bay through la plata. that's moving off to the east and northeast. i think about 7:00, most of us will be done. and we'll be left with drizzle and fog. tomorrow, we'll actually be in between two systems. this rain moves off to new england, in between. we'll have fog and sunshine. but late in the day tomorrow night. the next system coming in with a front will give us another chance of rain. could see some thunder activity

as well tomorrow night into friday. denise? >> thank you, bob. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin, at wjz traffic control. >> hi, denise. hi, everyone. your drive is going to be a messy one this afternoon. southbound 95, delays from, from caton avenue. already, a solid 30 minutes to harford road. another 25 minutes on the north side outer loop of bel air road to falls road. and the southwest side of the inner loop, still struggling in that direction. we're looking at almost 30 minutes there from 895 to security boulevard. as far as 70 goes, trouble in both directions. westbound jammed up from 29 to marriottsville road. and also eastbound slow over towards the beltway. in owings mills, we have an accident there. south howard at west lombard. and also, northbound on the jones falls expressway. an accident there at northern parkway with the delay, pretty solid now, back to cold spring lane. let's now take a live look.

a private investigator is hired in the search for a 10- month-old baby girl who went missing. the investigator is hired to look for lisa irwin. meanwhile, dozens of searchers come up empty in the search of a vacant well or house. detectives are looking for more information in the serial killer john wayne gasey. how investigators plan to identify them 30 years later. >> reporter: 30 years ago,

after a collection of skeletal remains were found beneath gasey's home, detectives secretly exhumed bones of eight young men who were never identified. now, investigators are urging anyone who had a loved one go missing in that time frame to undergo a dna saliva test. gasey was known to lure some of them to his chicago home for sex. the sheriff's department is setting up a phone bank to field calls across the country. denise? >> gailsy was executed -- gasey was executed in 1994. brian stow makes a big move. the san francisco giants fan suffered a brain injury after an attack outside the stadium in march. >> reporter: san francisco general released this photo of brian stow and his family leaving the hospital, although not under his own power, the doctor said he was cognizant, and even talking as he transferred to an undisclosed

rehabilitation center. >> when brian came here, he was in a comatose state. and when he left us today, he was able to begin to speak, interact with his family, and he's now beginning to eat as well. and he's making dramatic progress. >> reporter: he still can't stand up or walk, but the doctor said stow is able to move his body and sit up on his own. >> i had a report back from the hospital that he has now gone to. and one of my colleagues who is there said that she had mentioned my name to brian. and he said, "tell him i said hello." >> reporter: stow arrived in may, after being treated for a traumatic brain injury, following a severe beating after the dodgers game. he was attacked by men wearing dodger jerseys after the game. >> this was an extremely compit caked -- complicated and very difficult case, taking care of brian stow. >> reporter: the family has requested that the name of the

rehab center he's being sent to not be released to give them privacy. >> now we're seeing patients like stow and congresswoman giffords, that not only are we treating them, but patients are surviving. and not only are they surviving but going on to have meaningful recoveries. this does give hope. where he's going to be, where he's going to plateau, we just don't know yet. >> reporter: the trial for the two men who have been charged in the beating case is set, and they have pleaded not guilty. 17-year-old evan vander spry was in the middle of a mountain reserve when the antelope ran into him. the teen says he has seen the video hundreds of times, and he still can't believe it. >> sometimes i think to myself -- every time i look at it, i was in shock. as it hit me, i went unconscious. so i don't know much of the

actual experience myself. >> reporter: he spent much of the night in the hospital with a concussion and whiplash. he said the helmet he was wearing probably saved his life. smart phones are experiencing sporadic outages all over the world. today, the company that makes them is finally talking. >> reporter: millions of blackberry users in the united states and canada can't get their e-mail orin -- or instant messages. >> having trouble sending, having trouble receiving. sending five or six blackberry messages. and delay that -- they don't get through. they say a crucial link in its infrastructure as well as its backup failed three days ago, causing its worst outage in years. >> we are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience. >> reporter: blackberry is using twitter to update its customers about sporadic

outside now. we can actually hear the rain coming down here at television hill. bob is in the weather center with more. bob? >> unfortunately, folks heading on the highway now, we have rain in the region. this morning was pretty quiet. but we have rain right now. it's not going to last a long time. up until about 3:00, 4:00, we only had traces of rain. now we're getting about maybe a quarter to a third of an inch in some spots. and a few spots, it's locally heavy, as can you see. we're stuck in the low 60s, with 100% humidity. that dew point, there you go. 63 degrees. the dew point, 63 degrees. east/northeast winds, 13. and they have been breezy all day, up to 20 miles per hour. barometer still falling, 29.92

inches. in the 50s to the west of us. still 70s to the south. and that warmer air, believe it or not, is going to come in our direction tomorrow. we should be in the low to mid- 70s, with sun. then tomorrow night, with another front coming in. another system. we'll see another batch of rain and probably some thunder by tomorrow night. a little odd for october, but with this front coming in and these warm temps, that's what can happen. 60 in westminster. so the breeze off the ocean. northeast wind, kept temperatures way down this afternoon. as can you see, anywhere from 5 to 10, 15 miles an hour. once again, a nasty night. to the west of us, this next system, it has had some energy with it, juice. it will pick up a little more energy. kind of see that low developing there. this rain we had today, now moving up toward new england, really weakened quite a bit. southwest of us, it's cleared out. however, with clear skies late tonight, we really won't see much tonight. it will fog up quickly because the winds are so light.

so this batch of rain now is pretty much it for this first system. and we'll wait for the next one to come by tomorrow night into friday. then it clears out, friday afternoon, we should probably clear out. and cooler, dryer air moving in for the weekend. nup the -- up in the mountains. lake-effect. maybe scattered showers, with chilly air coming in aloft on friday afternoon and saturday afternoon. southeast winds, around 5 knots. and a small craft advisory, until 11:00 tonight only. bay temp, 67 degrees. still rather mild. tonight, then, rain early on. and then areas of fog coming in later tonight, as things clear out. and then tomorrow morning, fog -- pretty good bet. sunshine. and then, look for some afternoon, late afternoon, evening shower activity. and tomorrow night, into friday, maybe until about noontime friday. showers. and maybe a thundershower. front comes through the region. >> okay. >> weekend looks good. >> and it really is fall out there, isn't it? the leaves are coming with all
