hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> an 11-year-old boy is missing and his mother is dead. a nationwide amber alert is issued for the child. weijia jiang has the latest from rockville with the latest on the murder suspect. weijia? >> reporter: mary, we have now learned police have a suspect in custody for murder and for possible child abduction. police say they have not found that little boy.

>> back here at police headquarters. police say they have that person in custody, but there's still a lot of unanswered questions. we're working to confirm the relationship between him, that victim, and the little boy. this all happened when a friend who was concerned called police around 2:15. around 8:30, police went to the victim's home, went inside and found her lifeless body. they also interviewed neighbors and realized the boy had been missing for about two weeks sovmenty they issue -- so they issued an amber alert this morning. we have no word on who the little boy is or who the suspect is. but police are expected to brief us in the next new moments. reporting live, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> and we will update this breaking news story coming up all new at 4:30. we have other breaking news we are following right now. two people are burned after an accident at johns hopkins university. it happened about an hour ago

in the basement of ames hall. two employees were working on the cooling system. one worker has first- and second-degree burns on his face and legs. the other has second-degree burns on his legs. it is now the deadliest food- born outbreak in 25 years. denoose is -- denise is in the newsroom with more on the listeria-at that pointed-- listeria-tainted cantaloupe. >> 23 people are dead from the fruit and 116 are sick. the two latest are from louisiana. they are likely off store shelves by now. the recall did start in mid- september. the number of deaths, however, continues to grow, because listeria can take up to two months to appear. the last time a food outbreak was this deadly in the u.s. was in 1985, when mexico's soft

cheeses killed 52 people. a child custody battle may be what led to a mass murder in a quiet california community. elizabeth sanchez reports for wjz. witnesses say the suspect walked into a crowded hair salon, where his ex-wife works and opened fire. >> reporter: mourners have started a makeshift memorial in seal beach, where 18 people were gunned down. >> my heart hurts for everybody involved. >> residents are trying to come to grips with the town's mass murderer. >> it was really quiet. everybody smiles. it's just kind of unnerving to think that something like that could happen just out of nowhere like that. >> reporter: 42-year-old scott dekraai is under arrest. workers say he walked into the busy salon yesterday afternoon, where his ex-wife worked and started shooting. >> just a tiny seaside community, where just about everybody knows each other.

>> it's a small, tight-knit community. and this is one of seal beach's greatest tragedies. >> reporter: witnesses captured -- officers captured him about a half mile from the scene. he was bearing body armor. those familiar with the couple say they were fighting over their son. >> i would assume he probably snapped, thinking, you know, she's going to try to get custody and they'll give her custody because she's a mom. >> others say dekraai doted on his son and often played catch with him in the yard. >> reporter: a ninth shooting victim is still in critical condition. police have still not released the names of those killed. disturbing discovery. a motorist in carroll county finds a body in a wooded area. the body is identified as 17- year-old caleb lee mott of westminster. he was last seen early tuesday

morning, walking home from a friend's house nearby. an autopsy will determine how mott died. an adult eagle found dead in cumberland died of natural causes. the bird was found september 16th. natural sources police initially thought a hole meant it was shot. a necropsy determined later that it was made after the animal was dead. tricky repairs climbed to the top of the national cathedral in washington. andrea is in the newsroom with the incredible pictures. andrea? >> engineers worked in the fog today to remove two tons of smoke from a pinnacle damaged in the august quake. take a look at this. a worker stands on top of the scaffolding, giving directions to a crane operator below. they worked carefully to lower the section of hand-carved stone work to the ground. three were severely damaged in the 5.82 magnitude quake.

the section removed today shifted more than 8 inches off its base. mary? >> old coins found in the mortar left there by masons who built the cathedral will be put back on the stone. >> as you saw in the video, another dreary day outside. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hi, bob. we had clearing last night and quickly clouded up. we had a warm front to the south of us. and that's moving to the region. and that's really created some of these showers to the west of us. there's actually a cool front. or let's call it a different air mass moving in. and that has more shower activity with it. and later tonight, we may see some steady rain and even some rumbles of thunder tonight and again tomorrow. but late in the day tomorrow, a front will come across the region. clear things out. it will get breezy by dinnertime. and we'll see some stars and moonlight tomorrow night. and the weekend shaping up to be breezy, but a lot dryer.

we have breaking news right now out of connecticut, where a man in a home invasion murder is found guilty. just a moment ago, the jury found him guilty of strangling jessica covpetit and two of her daughters. prosecutors say he tortured and sexually assaulted one of the daughters and then set the home on fire and left the family to die. kansas city police are releasing surveillance video of the mother of the missing 10- month-old. she was shopping just hours before the baby disappears. on the video, deborah bradley buys groceries, diapers and a box of wine. police say this really doesn't answer questions about the case. a teacher uses a marker on

you can't see anything out there. >> can't see anything. >> how depressing. >> drizzle, fog. low clouds, showers. south of us, warmer. and there are thundershowers and a couple of thunderstorms out of virginia. take a look, south of washington, around fredericksburg, around i-95. they're moving northward now. some of those may get in now. but they'll probably die out. there are pretty gusty showers out there now. we will see shower activity moving in the area. some of this stuff in southeast virginia might make it in. we're not done with the rain just yet. and there's another chance, overnight into tomorrow of more showers. now, we finally reached our high for the day, close to 70 now. we're at 69. the dew points, way up. of course humidity at 96%. east winds at 8. later tonight, they go back to the south and southeast. that's going to bring that warm air in tonight. i don't think the low is going to get much lower than a 65 degrees most places. warm night. barometer just starting to fall

again. 29.62 inches. currently, 76 in washington. 77, easton. that warm front, just south of the baltimore region. and the warm air mass, humid. that's where the scattered showers and thundershowers come popping up. 55 in oakland and ocean city. rather mild, 71. locally. in the mid-60s. to near 70. we've got warm air moving in tonight. and it will be with us. at least half, well, maybe a little more than half tomorrow, before a front moves in the region. the winds will go back to the west/northwest. dry things out quickly by dinnertime. during the day tomorrow, shower and thunderstorm activity. right now, we generally have an east wind. and it's been pushing the water up the west side of the bay. so we're still looking at coastal flood issues. tides going to run 1 to 1 1/2 feet above normal. at time of high tide, again, later on the western side of the bay, particularly. low pressure that passed us yesterday is now way up to our

formation of some tornado activity. this box includes washington and southern maryland and eastern sections of virginia. and a little over the eastern shore. it's in effect from now until 11:00 tonight. we do have thunderstorm activity growing in that region. we see some of that stuff. and we've had gusty winds. that's why they've issued this watch. it's a watch. that's why it's possible some of these thunderstorms could produce an isolated tornado. of course, we'll update you if anything changes. but for now, just keep an eye on the skies. possibly strong thunderstorms across southern portions of our region. more testimony against dr. conrad murray. today, experts call an -- defense calls an expert on propofol. >> reporter: attorneys for michael jackson's doctor questioned a sleep expert about the 25 milligrams of the sedative propofol. dr. conrad murray admits he

propofol. >> reporter: but they said that propofol should only be used for sedation, not to help people sleep. >> in a standard setting, without appropriate monitoring, it is absolutely incomprehensible. >> reporter: the defense is expected to begin its case next week, calling their own panel of experts, calling for what they said for the past few weeks. >> reporter: in los angeles, sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> murray faces four years in prison if convicted of manslaughter. a helicopter crashes into new york's east river. >> reporter: that chopper went down last week with five people on board. now, a second person inside, from injuries sustained during the crash. medical examiners say 43-year- old helen tamaski died from nearly drowning. the couple was in new york to celebrate mara's birthday.

a preliminary investigation found the helicopter had been inspected two days before the crash. denise? >> thank you, kai. the ntsb report does not give the cause of the accident. that could take several more months. two american hikers recently freed by iran make their rounds on capitol hill. shane bower and josh fatal were arrested along with sarah shower. all three are at capital hill. conflicting reports today in libya, about the fate of one of the sons of ousted dictator moammar gadhafi. revlution fighters say they have him in custody. but the military denies it. >> libya fired shot of celebration, after hearing reports revolutionary forces had captured one of moammar gadhafi's son. this man said we got the little

seif islam. the proposed dictator is believed to be hiding somewhere far to the south in the vast libyan desert. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> gadhafi loyalists still control the desert town. but libya's transitional government will stabilize the country enough to move toward democracy. in baltimore county, a murder trial without a body. 34-year-old jason gross is charged with killing 16-year- old 16-year-old tricia battle. investigators believe he may have abducted the girl on an mta bus. this is the second case in baltimore prosecuted without a body. and baltimore county police are asking for your help to find the man who vanished more than a week ago. 53-year-old michael diffendorfer was last seen in his home in baltimore on october 25th. his wife said he had gotten a note saying he had moved out and gone to dinner.

anyone with information is asked to call state police. the number is there on your screen. we have an update for you on a story wjz has been following all day long. the search for a missing maryland boy stretches to north carolina. his mother, jane mclane, is found murdered inside their home. the car turned up in charlotte around 8:30 this morning. police say they have a man in custody for the murder but there is no sign of william. parents, you may want to check your child's booster seat. a new study shows startling information about their risk. >> reporter: well, vic, researchers at the insurance institute for highway safety examined more than 80 booster seats. 41 of them don't properly fit seat belts in every vehicle. six models were so bad, parents are being told to avoid them entirely. researchers did get more

encouraging results. the institute found 31 booster seats as best bets or good bets. and that's a record high. >> maryland requires booster seats for children who have outgrown their safety seats. >> well, those new monthly fees for debit cards have customers up in arms. bank of america recently announced a $5 monthly fee. chase and wells fargo are testing similar charges. a group of democratic lawmakers now wants the justice department to figure out whether the banks violate antitrust laws by coordinating those increases. let's check on the roads now with kristy breslin. >> hi, everyone. slick roads, dere duced visibility. a -- reduced visibility. a lot of problems to talk about on the beltway. we have a problem to talk about between southeast boulevard and east. that's blocking the right-hand lane. another one from 795 to the bw parkway. and not much better on the west side inner loop.

aggression against writer tristan ben identity but it's too late to prosecute because it happened earlier. another case was made but that case was also dropped. the suspect in the 2001 shooting rampage is on the move. jared lee loughner was brought to a prison facility today. loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges, stemming from the shooting that killed 13 people -- six people and injured 13. andrea fujii has more on a battle for privacy. >> reporter: vic, the man known only as m.d. has asked a judge to turn his name over to attorneys, representing tyler clooney's roommate. here is a video streaming of

him kissing. without his knowledge. clemente committed suicide days after this incident. mb's attorney says the intense media interest in his death is one reason he doesn't want his identity revealed. >> he dropped out of rutgers weeks after the suicide. a stuttering student speaks out. the new jersey professor said -- student said the teacher told him not to speak out in class. now this story has the nation's attention. >> stut -- stuttering is something to laugh at. and it's not something to take seriously. >> reporter: this outspoken 16- year-old who stutters has been taking two classes here at the college county north in new jersey to overcome his disability. but imagine how he felt when he

says an adjunct professor in a history course told him not to ask questions in class, so as not to disrupt the other students. >> the first feeling was, i -- i just -- shock. >> reporter: phillip gar ber jr. said he was even more shocked when the adjurcht professor told him to write out the questions before and after class. that's where the college board moved him to a class where he would feel more comfortable. >> he was, in fact, discriminated against. that's something we take seriously. >> reporter: garber has struggled with stuttering all his life. he's been home schooled and has gotten speech therapy. >> at this level of discrimination. >> reporter: we were unable to get comment from the adjunct professor. but the majority of students in

the class are behind the 16- year-old. >> he paid for his tuition like everybody else did. and it's not fair that he's not allowed to speak out in class. >> reporter: the national institutes of health report that about 5% of people stutter at some point in their lives and around 1% stutter as adults. an eye-popping trend could put you in a risky situation. decorative contact lenses may look cool, but they can do serious damage to your eyes. that's why the maryland society of eye physicians and surgeons is warning parents and teens about the products. doctors say many of the lenses are not fda-approved and can cause serious disorders, which may lead to blindness. a plane makes an emergency landing. ted scouten reports on the dramatic scene. >> reporter: a single-engine plane makes an emergency landing right in the middle of the turnpike. investigators tell us the plane was headed from opa locka to the airport when it called the tower to report it had to land. the first place it could find

was at a highway, just shy of the airport. >> it was trying to land on the northbound lane of the turnpike. >> reporter: it appears it hit the dividing wall, spun around and ended up crossing three lanes of traffic. what is truly incredible is that when the plane landed, nobody on the ground was hit. >> it was a tremendous effort to the pilot's part to bring it down and not get anybody hurt. just quudos -- kudos to him. >> reporter: another concern, traffic. both northbound and southbound were closed. now, they finally opened up the southbound lanes. another concern, leaking fuel. emergency crews worked quickly to sop up the fuel with dirt and sand. >> there is no reason why the pilot had to make the emergency landing. air tran airways says they have adopted a new policy for what they call customers of size. they are now adopting a two-

they documented footprints and stray pieces of hair. the evidence was presented at a conference in russia, and near an area, where there have been an increased number of sightings in recent years. what kind of conference would that be? >> i don't know. but soon it will be the yeti tour. and we can all do a ecosearch for yeti. potential dangers for maryland. a tornado watch is in effect for parts of our area. >> bob is tracking first warning doppler radar next. ,,,,

as you just mentioned, the weather service just issued a tornado box. this box you see, including aa county, charles, st. mary's, calvert and a little bit of dorchester county, under a tornado watch until 9:00 tonight. that means some of these storms that are developing could, in fact, one or two small tornadoes, have been reported in louisa county, virginia, in the last hour or so. so certainly a possibility that some of these thunderstorms could have very gusty winds. and may -- may spin a small tornado. so to keep abreast of the tornado for you.

certainly the biggest now in maryland would be across extreme southern portions of the western shore. calvert county, st. mary's, and i think particularly p.g. county and the d.c. region. take a look at temperatures now. we've warmed up to 69. humidity way up. barometer falling. 29.96 inches. that's helping to feed the storms. temperatures, a little unusual in the mid to even upper 70s down in virginia. that's any these storms have developed a front south of baltimore. the warm front has been that warm sector. the rest of us, a lot cooler. 61, 55. 67. south and east of our region, that's where that warm air is sitting. and locally, temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s to about the low to mid-70s. washington already, up to 75 degrees. so i think that area, that we just showed you, that's where the warm air is. and we've already had reports of two small tornadoes in louisa county, virginia. between 30 to around 3:40 this afternoon.

very small. that's one of the reasons the weather service says you shoot a tornado watch. we've already seen two small storms. hopefully we won't see much more tonight. in our region, the winds turn to the east, a rather unstable air mass. down here, still unstable. can produce violent thundershower activity. and maybe a small tornado. to the west of us, another batch of rain with thunderstorm activity. that's coming in tonight and again tomorrow, as that swings by, we'll have another threat of more showers and maybe thundershower activity, with that system. once we get rid of this batch tonight, still a risk of a few more of those happening tomorrow. but by late in the day, dryer air moves in. the front moves through. it will get breezy. much nicer for the weekend. sunshine for the most part. but it will be breezy. southwest winds on the bay tomorrow. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, around 67. tonight, showers or maybe thundershower activity. south and west of us, maybe some thunderstorms. 64, 72 tomorrow. a couple of showers.
