inside their montgomery county home. and now he is missing. wjz is live in rockville. weijia jiang has breaking inform information about the suspect in custody. >> reporter: we have just learned that police have arrested 45-year-old curtis, who is the husband. here's the troubling part. police say they have not found that little boy. >> reporter: just before 8:30 wednesday night, police make a gruesome discovery inside the home of 51-year-old jane mcqueen. her lifeless body. >> oh, gosh. oh, gosh, oh, gosh. i mean, i was shaking just like this. >> reporter: police now have a suspect in custody for the murder and for the disappearance of the victim's son, 11-year-old william mcquain. an amber alert went out for him monday. he's described as being 5 feet tall, 85 pounds. though detectives may have the kidnapper, they have no idea where the boy is. >> i don't want to think the word. this is very sad.

very sad. i hope nothing happened to him. >> reporter: because the autopsy report is still in the works, police say they don't know how long mcquain has been dead. but they are not ruled out the possibility she was killed around the same time her son went missing. that was nearly two weeks ago. >> i hope he hasn't killed him. i swear to god, i hope they haven't. oh, god. >> reporter: mcquain's neighbor tells wjz, she noticed a strange man visiting the complex for the past several days, and that he was even driving mcquain's car. police found that honda crv earlier today but say no one was inside at the time. police are desperate to find william. >> we do believe that there are man possibility -- many possibilities that he is alive. we want as many people to know that he is missing. >> reporter: police say they arrested lopez in charlotte, north carolina earlier today. they are going to brief us

later on how this all unfold us and give us the latest details they have on 11-year-old william mcquain. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> police are waiting to hear from the medical examiner's office before determining an exact cause of death. an update on the breaking news from john hopkins university, where two employees are seriously injured in an accident on campus. they were working on the h-vac system in the hall when hot water started pouring out. the workers started suffering first- and second-degree burns. medics rushed them to the hospital for treatment. vic is in the newsroom with details. >> police say the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. take a close look at the pictures. jermaine stroud is being transported. he is a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred yesterday. detectives say he also has a history of past robberies. anyone with information on his whereabouts should call 911 immediately.

>> stay on the story. we'll let you know as soon as the suspect is caught. a little girl is attacked by a dog in her baltimore county neighborhood. it happened in the 2300 block of blue grass heights court in rosedale. a dog escaped from its owner's house and bit 6-year-old canigha harris in the leg. she received more than 40 stitches and is now at home recovering. so far, no charges are filed in this case. we'll have much more on the story coming up new at 6:00. a 16-year-old girl disappears in baltimore county. and her body is never found. now, the man charged with her murder is on trial. wjz is live in towson. mike schuh has been in the courtroom all day long. mike? >> reporter: well, mary, again. the big question, is circumstantial evidence enough when they can't find the body of the alleged victim? baltimore county prosecutors, for the second time in a year, think so. >> reporter: in this case, 16- year-old rochelle battle went missing in march of 2009. her family hasn't heard from

her since. her cell phone records quickly directed her family and police to jason gross. he is arrested. his property searched. but her body is never found. you'll remember this time last year, dennis tetso was convicted of murdering his wife, though her body was never found. legal scholars say few of these cases are brought to court because without a body, how can you prove the victim is dead, unless the person was murdered. >> can we speculate? sure. but that's not evidence. >> reporter: in opening arguments today, the prosecutor tells the jury, jason gross, he thought of the perfect murder. a csi fan, he thought he could get away with it. >> he tells the jury about the backyard of the accused murderer. and that metal tube, it's an incinerator. he burned her body in an incinerator at the back of his house. >> reporter: cell phone records for both the accused and the victim show they were in the same place at the same time, on

the night that she disappeared. and there are surveillance tapes, showing the accused trucks driving towards a rendezvous with the victim at a time when he said that he was at a bar and had an alibi. an alibi that a friend later says is not true. >> reporter: the defense, though, in a mocking tone, told the jury, you have no body. how do they know that rochelle battle is dead? and calls the prosecution's case speculation, conjecture, a guess. -- guess. >> both sides say that the two met online in an adult chat room. and they say rochelle used those times in the chat room to set up dates for prostitution. reporting live, mike schuh, towson, wjz eyewitness news. back to you. >> the prosecution will continue tomorrow. a gas leak. bge crews are on the scene after a contractor hit a 4-inch gas line on east ordinance

road. the fire department is blocking access to the cromwell fountain apartments. anne arundel county schools also had to reroute their buses to avoid the area. tonight, 35 suspected gang members are facing charges. police and federal prosecutors just announced the indictment. >> the reality is, this makes community safer. because the result of the activities of these is that they are creating fear in their communities. they're engaged in robberies, home invasion robberies, burglaries. they're putting drugs in their communities. >> the suspects are allegedly members of a subset of the bloods gang that originated in california. they're facing several charges, including several federal charges, including racketeering. police believed the crime stretched to the eastern shore. engineers ventured to the top of the western cathedral to fix the earthquake damage. and they worked in the fog to remove two tons of stone. crews used a crane to bring

down the pieces from the central power. it reopened for the first time since the quake of november 12. >> something you don't often hear about these days. repealing a tax. the two-cent beverage tax is under review. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren has more on what is taking place. pat? >> reporter: that's right, kai. the beverage industry is raising the protest, claiming it is losing more in business and jobs than the city is gaining with the tax. >> reporter: there's a lot to be said for customer loyalty. >> i think coming since it was in a row home where they had this in their living room and their dining room. >> reporter: but marlene donahue isn't the typical customer. according to some, customers have been deserting them since the city imposed a 2-cent

beverage tax. >> that number is much larger as the whole industry goes. >> reporter: for some individuals, two cents more per container isn't a lot. >> not at all. not when gas is on 50 cents. >> well, i didn't like it. i really didn't. but our streets need a lot of fixing. so what are you going to do? ride over with your car and bust your wheels up? or take two cents a bottle. >> reporter: but for distributors and retailers, the better question is how do you stop consumers from riding over to the counties and doing business there? >> who wants to do business here? let's go to the county, where things are a lot easier, because we don't have this tax. it's an unfair burden. >> reporter: city council vice president ed rizinger said he is hearing a different story about why local businesses are losing money. >> it's the economy. people are laid off. they don't have jobs. they cut back their hours. >> reporter: repealing the tax a year early, would mean about $5 million less in the budget, which the city says it cannot

custody battle over a child may have led to the deaths of eight people inside a california salon. elizabeth sanchez reports for wjz, with the investigation into the mass shooting. >> reporter: mourners have started a makeshift memorial outside the beauty salon in seal beach, where eight people were gunned down. >> my heart just breaks for everybody involved. >> residents are trying to come to grips with the town's worst mass murder. >> it was really quiet. everybody is really nice. everybody smiles. so it's just kind of unnerving to think that something like that could happen just out of nowhere like that. >> reporter: 42-year-old scott dekraai is under arrest.

witnesses say he walked into the busy salon yesterday afternoon, where his ex-wife worked and started shooting. >> reporter: this is a tiny seaside community and just about everybody in town is familiar with the salon. >> it's a small, tight-knit community. and this is one of seal beach's greatest tragedies. >> reporter: police captured dekraai about a half mile from the scene. witnesses say he was wearing body armor and did not resist arrest. those familiar with the couple say the divorced couple was fighting over their son. >> i would assume he probably snap snapped, thinking, you know, maybe they'll give her custody because she's a mom. >> reporter: neighbors say he doted on his son and often played catch with him in the yard. >> none of the names of those killed has been officially released. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads now

that box. you see that box. that's the area that the weather service has put under a tornado watch until 9:00 tonight. the d.c. area, portions of southern maryland, calvert county. yeah, st. mary's county. charles county, p.g. county. and a little piece of dorchester and montgomery county as well. possibly some severe weather in these regions from now until about 9:00. hopefully they cancel that sooner. but in the baltimore region, still rather unstable. it has warmed up. temperatures warm again all day, up to 70 degrees. look how warm to the south of us. d.c. just jumped up to 76. so it's a very juicy atmosphere. and rather unstable now. north and west of us, very stable. cooler temperatures, not really conducive to those kinds of storms. but down here. look at that. easton, some sun and 77. ocean city, 69. 73 in pax river. big storms down across virginia. just had about an hour ago. a small tremor reported 30 miles east of richmond.

these storms are moving up north. they probably will be expecting you folks, particularly in southern maryland, charles county, st. mary's county, and maybe western calvert county, pg county and d.c. area. right now, still for about the next five minutes. prince william and faulkner county, virginia understand a tornado warning. those storms will have some rotation with them. if you're heading down that way, watch the sky. be careful. locally, temperatures have warmed up. upper 60s to the low 70s. the warmest we have been all day. still the east wind, however, bringing lots of moisture in. south winds and southeast winds down to the south. now, tomorrow, late in the day. a front will come through the region, with more showers later tonight. maybe heavy downpours, and even a couple of thunderstorms with that system moving through. right across the region tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night. we'll have a risk of more rain with that. and then it clears out, just in time for the weekend. by tomorrow, dinnertime. the front comes through. breezy and lower humidity.

is now stretching to north carolina. a nationwide amber alert has been issued for 11-year-old william mcquain. his mother was found in germantown last night. her car turned up in north carolina this morning. a short time later, police arrested curtis lopez, her husband and the boy's stepfather. right now, there is no sign of 11-year-old william. police are updating the case. we'll go live right now to lessen to police in montgomery county. >> curtis lopez, a 45-year-old man, was ms. mcquain's husband and was known to frequent the area, but did not live there. according to residents, he was seen in the area of ms. mcquain's residence and was seen taking property from the residence and loading it into the victim's vehicle. mr. lopez was contacted by detectives last night in connection with ms. lopez's discovering e.

her body. once detectives determined this was a homicide, mr. lopez, based on his inconsistent statements became a person of interest. an amber alert was issued for ms. mcquain and her son william. based on the amber alert, charlotte mecklenburg pd located locatedat approximately 8:30 this morning. based on additional information, a warrant was obtained for mr. lopez. and he was arrested at approximately 9:30 this morning. 11-year-old william mcquain is still missing. he is described as a biracial male. approximately 5 feet tall, weighing 85 pounds. our focus and our priorities now is locating william mcquain. we're asking for the public's help. if you have any information with regard to the whereabouts

disappeared. denise is in the newsroom. denise. >> reporter: kansas city police just released the surveillance video of deborah bradley, the mother of lisa irwin. she walked in to buy wine and baby supplies. and this was several hours before she said her daughter was abducted from the crib. the fbi questioned a store clerk, hoping to get an idea of bradley's state of mind before the disappearance. >> i told them, she never looked depressed around me. she always seemed to have a smile on her face when her kids were around. >> reporter: police brought out atvs and search dogs today to comb the area where lisa lives to make sure they voluntary missed anything. >> reporter: lisa's parents have now hired a private investigator in the search. new security concerns authority -- after authorities stop a plot. today, officials say they believe iran is considering another terror attack. bill plant has more for wjz.

helicopter crash. doctors say a 43-year-old woman, critically hurt in the crash succumbed to her injuries yesterday. the helicopter plunged into the water shortly after takeoff october 4th. another woman immediately drowned. federal verdicts are looking into the cause. -- investigators are looking into the cause. an amtrak train slams into another. most were taken in minor injuries suffered last night. amtrak officials say it appears the train went straight through the red light. this is the second significant amtrak crash in the bay area in just two weeks. an expert on propofol takes the stand as the prosecution's final witness in the trial of michael jackson's personal doctor. now, attorneys for dr. conrad murray are preepg -- preparing their case. sandra hughes reports for the courthouse in los angeles. >> reporter: attorneys for michael jackson's doctor questioned the sleep expert about the 25 milligrams of the sedative propofol. dr. conrad murray admits he

gave to the pop star on the day he died. >> that is a low dose. yeah. >> and that's not a dose that you would expect to cause complications, would you? >> not necessarily. >> reporter: defense attorneys suggested another doctor was treating jackson simultaneously, for insomnia, without murray's murray's knowledge. and it was the overall cocktail of drugs in the pop star's system that killed him. they also say murray was trying to wean jackson off propofol, something jackson was not happy about. >> i recall dr. murray stating that that is what mr. jackson was asking for. but as physicians, we are not just there to enable and provide patients with what they ask us for but to do what is right. >> reporter: defense attorneys have abandoned their theory that michael jackson drank the final dose of propofol. but they may still argue that he injected the sedative or another drug into his iv drip to try to get some sleep. >> reporter: but in thursday's

testimony, the sleep heks pert repeated that propofol should only be used in sedation, not to help people sleep. >> in standard practice, particularly in a home setting without appropriate monitoring, it is absolutely incomprehensible. >> reporter: the defense is expected to begin its case next week, calling their own panel of experts who will counter what more than 30 witnesses for the prosecution have said for the past three weeks. >> reporter: in los angeles, sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> murray faces four years in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter. the debit card fee debate spreads to washington. bank of america recently announced a $5 monthly fee. chase and wells fargo are testing similar charges. a group of lawmakers now wants to investigate whether they violated antitrust laws by coordinating those increases. former restaurant executive herman cain catapults to the lead in the republican presidential nomination.

mr. k -- cain's blunt style seems to be winning over voters. his plan to replace the entire tax code and loopholes is drawing a lot of attention. blackberries around the world are buzzing again after a three-day outage affects millions of customers. blackberry says its system returned to normal early this morning. but it's customers whose phones have been out of touch for a long time may need to take the battery out and reinstall it to reboost the device. air tran airways is adopting a new policy for passengers. it's called "customers of size." beginning in march, the airline will require flyers to purchase a second seat if they cannot sit in one seat with both arm rests down. southwest bought air tran earlier this year. on its website, southwest said it would refund the additional seat purchased if the flight was not oversold. in tomorrow morning's edition of the baltimore sun. a rediscovered film about cars

an iranian prison are now free and visiting capitol hill. shane bower and jash fatal were arrested in 2009. along with sara shower for straying. they were freed. the hikers were meeting with secretary of state hillary clinton and others to give thanks for helping bring them home. a 51-car pileup in chile. the accident killed five people and ininjury -- injiewrd more than 20. police say one car stopped because of poor visibility. in total, 23 trucks and cars were involved in that crash. a mother and daughter are charge and in custody for robbing a bank in colorado. police say the mother waited in the car while the young woman went into the bank. the younger woman apparently said she had a timothy mcveighb in her pants. the mother said she thought she

was driving her daughter to the bank to run an errand. a roman catholic priest says he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his parish to support his gambling addiction. monsignor admits to taking it over an eight-year period. mcauliffe could face up to 60 years behind bars and up to $750,000 in fines. i can't believe this next story actually happens. a rhino makes a run for it at the miami zoo. the rhino escapes from his pen but didn't make it out of the park. visitors were moved to a safe area to prevent attacks while workers secured all of the entrances and the exits. it took 25 minutes to catch the rhino. >> the key thing was to be calm, as long as we had him contained and we knew we could just edge him at his own pace, back this that area. and it worked perfectly. >> i do not think i would be calm if i were there.

former rank derrick mason will be back in town from the visiting houston texans. mark viviano has more. >> it is a transient league. we see situations like this. former teammates who go head to head in an nfl game. and we'll see that experience for a couple of ravens who came to baltimore this year after their time with the texans. hard-hitting defensive back, bernard pollard played two times in houston. he's been a welcome addition. and full-back daunte leech is a raven now, after five standout years in houston, where he was a pro bowl performer.

is missing some key players. plus, a look ahead to this weekend's baltimore running festival. 25,000 runners will hit the streets of our town. i'll have details in sports at 6:00. kai, back to you for now. >> mark, thank you. in tonight's wjz healthwatch, a listeria outbreak, linked to cantaloupe, is now responsible for 23 deaths in the united states. the count makes listeria, the deadliest known outbreak of foodborn illness in more than 25 years. the centers for disease control confirmed two more deaths in louisiana and says 116 people have been sickened by the disease. deaths were reported in 11 other states, including maryland. a simple saliva test could one day help doctors screen for pancreatic cancer. doctors in the uk have found that certain types of mouth bacteria are associated with the disease. pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms. at the moment, there is no reliable test for the disease. still to come on wjz
