where is william mcquain? the maryland boy still missing. >> his stepfather is suspect in his mother's murder, what happened to the boy? hi everybody, i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. >> a frantic search, a maryland boy is still missing and chilling new details are emerging about the man in police custody for his mother's murder. weijia jiang has the latest. >> reporter: police were hoping to find the 11-year-old with the suspect but that didn't happen and even though they've spent hours questioning the man, they're no closer the finding the little boy. police are scrambling to uncover clues that could lead them to 11-year-old william

mcquain. an amber alert for the sixth grader has the country on watch. >> my hope is that he may be with a family member or a friend. that perhaps has no idea that -- what's occurred with his mother. >> reporter: his mother, 51- year-old jane mcquain was found dead inside her bedroom wednesday night in the 13100 block of briar cliff terrace, at the same time police realized her son was missing. he hasn't been to class at dr. martin luther king jr. middle school since september30th. neighbors haven't seen either of them for two weeks. >> we just kind of waves and that was it. and i don't remember seeing her since. >> reporter: mcquain's estranged husband curtis lopez is in police custody charged with her murder. authorities used cell phone records to find him at a hotel with mcquain's car but no trace of william. the investigation now spans the east coast. detectives from montgomery county are working in north

carolina. they admit as more teenage passes finding the boy unharmed becomes more of a long shot. >> i hope he hasn't killed him. i swear to god i do. i hope they haven't. oh god. >> reporter: police say they've shifted all of their energy now to finding william mcquain. at least described as being 5'0" and about 85 pounds. at this time they're not revealing what if anything lopez is saying about his whereabouts. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> take another look at william mcquain's picture, if you have any information about him, you are urged to call 911 immediately. gunman on the loose. some new information from police in the shooting of a man inside a baltimore parking garage. andrea fujii is live with more on the victim's condition. >> reporter: mary, police say this is the second time in several days the unidentified man has become the victim of a violent crime. he was shot three times and seriously injured last night in an underground parking garage

at green and redwood streets. he was not garage for follow-up treatment at a nearby hospital. according to our media partner, the "baltimore sun," the police union says he was being treated for a stab wound he received in a recent home invasion. they are investigating. mary? the fraternal order of police is blasting the city and the police department for not releasing more information about the shooting. peaceful demonstrations turned violent in new york. "occupy wall street" protestors and police square off with bottles and batons. manuel gallegus reports from lower manhattan. >> reporter: the demonstration in downtown new york turned ugly when protestors took to the streets and headed for the stock exchange. [ people chanting ] police stepped in to make arrests and clear the crowd. eyewitnesses say this demonstrator was struck by an nypd motorcycle. he tried to free his trapped foot and officers dragged him

away. the trouble followed what had been a victory for the hundreds camped out here in a nearby park. the city had threated to move everybody out to clean the area but at the last-minute decided to relate them stay. >> we are articulate people. we are considerate people. we take care of this park and we care for humanity and we are here to stand up for humanity. >> reporter: protestors in cities around the country including seattle, and denver, blame corporate greed for unemployment and the economic state of america. those who work on wall street say the protestors are targeting the wrong people. but new yorker kelly at kinson who used to work in finance sympathizes with the crowd. he's been out of work for four months. >> you think the men and women up there are listening to. >> absolutely, absolutely, no one is ignoring them. they're not ignoring them but you know the guys up there don't have the solution. it's going to take more than the wall street guys to have a

[ people chanting ] >> reporter: atkinson was going to a job interview as protestors vow to occupy downtown indefinitely. in new york, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> in san diego, tensions rise as more than 100 protestors link in a human chain refusing to leave their camp outside city hall. one person was arrested. important developments in the case of a maryland woman missing in aruba. denise is in the newsroom with more on a new court hearing in the disappearance of robyn gardner. >> judge in aruba is going to consider whether to release gaithersburg resident gary giordano. police in aruba have been searching for gardner since she disappeared in august. giordano says she disappeared while the two were snorkeling. giordano has hired a new attorney with ties to the natalie hollowway case. >> his new attorney says his

client is feeling boxed in and has broken down in tears of frustration. a school bus accident is under investigation in northeast baltimore. the school bus and car collided around 8:30 this morning at frankfort and walters avenue. four people including two children were taken to the hospital. none of the injuries is life- threatening. the national weather service is looking at damage in virginia to see if several tornadoes touched down there. this is home video in charles county, virginia. one twister definitely quantico, virginia hit quantico, virginia during violent storms yesterday. about a dozen homes and a roof is damaged. one person was slightly hurt. this is the area hardest hit by the quake this summer. a big wind blowing the rain and the clouds out of our area right now. here's a live look outside at what has become a sunny breezy afternoon. who knew? bob turk knew. he's here with the updated look at doppler radar for us. bob? >> push that rain out of here.

take a look at radar, it's gone. the only place where we're really seeing any shower activity is way over on the eastern shore, a little bit in the elken area moving into new jersey and there it goes this afternoon. the front came through and the winds have shifted drying things out. looks like a really nice weekend. it's going to be breezy though. new york state, that way, wind gusts up there get up to 40 and 50 miles an hour. it's going to be breezy here 20, maybe 30-mile an hour winds tomorrow afternoon. so those leaves that are now blowing around are going to be everywhere over the next couple of days. want to borrow somebody's phone to make a call? you may want to think twice. it may be contaminated with harmful bacteria a new study finds. tina krause reports for wjz in the health watch tonight. >> reporter: doctors in britain have a new health warrant for cell phone users. they say phones across the

country are harboring dangerous e. coli bacteria. >> it may unfortunately the people are going to the toilet and hands are getting contaminated and they're not washing their hands with soap. >> reporter: researchers studied 400 people in 12 british cities taking samples from their hands and cell phones. they found fecal bacteria on one in six phones. >> yuck. nasty. >> reporter: even though 95% of brits questioned claim they always washed their hands with soap after using the bathroom. >> yes. i do. >> three dimes a day average i'd say. >> are you sure is this. >> i always wash my hands after going to the bathroom. >> reporter: while researchers used cell phones in their study, the same germs can fester on everyday objects especially the ones people share. >> it's public health problem number one. >> reporter: researchers timed their study with global hand washing day. the campaign aims to make hand washing an automatic habit. doctors say always use soap and

let's check on the roads with christy b rezlin at wjz traffic control. >> the major problem is southbound i-95. i was stuck in the mess, we have an accident at riverside parkway blocking the two left hand lanes, delays all the way back to the tidings memorial bridge. about 50 minutes to get through. northbound 95 from 152 up to 543 and the beltway a 30 minute delay on the north side inner loop there from 95 to the jfx. as far as the north side outer loop goes also heavy from providence road over to 83 and not much better on the westbound outer loop just bumper to bumper from security boulevard to the pike. traveling 70 westbound, heavy traffic there from the river bridge over to mariesville road

the toddler was standing all alone on a county road. two passengers noticed the child and safely rescued him from on coming traffic. also just inches away from a huge cornfield. the child's in foster care as police look for his parents. it's a perfume sold by susan g. komen for the cure, but the breast cancer action group wants promise me off store shelves. elizabeth cook reports for wjz. >> reporter: annie never leaves home without wearing a little perfume. >> so i personally use a lot of natural oils! we had her try on the latest scent called promise me. >> very soft feminine floral. >> reporter: but when we told her the perfume may contain ingredients that actually cause cancer the fragrance turned foul. >> it's quite contradicting. >> it contains a number of chemicals of concern that are

not listed on the ingredients. >> reporter: she's the executive director of breast cancer action a nonprofit group that promotes education and does not fund raise. she has some concerns about promise me after it came out this year earlier so she had it tested and found it contained a number of ingredients links to cancer. she immediately brought her findings to the susan g. komen foundation. >> a confusing way. on one hand, they said their scientific and medical advisory team felt the perfume was safe. on the other hand they are work welcome the manufacturer to reform late the perfume. >> reporter: promise me is being sold nationwide at big stores like jcpenney and lord and taylor but breast cancer action wants to fragrance to be taken off the shelves immediately. >> in a situation where not enough is known about putting women at risk be why are so many women getting breast cancer, we feel that every precaution should be taken. >> reporter: cbs 5 didn't return our phone calls and

[ bell dinging ] the markets closed back-to-back weekend gains for the first time since july and hopes the european debt crisis is easing. here's a look at the closing numbers -- let's go to new york right now and alexis christoforous is there. >> reporter: the dow had the best three week winning streak since july 2009. stocks rose on strong corporate profits and news that consumers are still spending. americans bought more cars, clothing and furniture last month.

that pushed retail sales up more than 1%. the biggest gain in seven months and nearly double what analysts predicted. experts say it's proof the economy is not falling back into recession. apple is expected to sell as many as four million new iphone 4s units this weekend after customers around the world lined up the buy one of the last products developed under steve jobs. steve wozniak who founded apple with steve jobs was first in line at this store in california. the new iphone 4s is getting mostly positive reviews for its voice recognition software, speedier processor and improved camera. the release represents the end of apple's era under jobs who died wills week. shares of google climbed more than 5% after online advertising helped push quarterly profits up 26%. an internet video chat service skype is now officially a part of microsoft. the two companies joined forces late thursday when microsoft completed its $8.5 billion buyout of skype.

that is the welcome sight. it was raining so much today. >> i told you yesterday before dinner we'd clear out? we cleared out around 3:00. >> earlier, thanks. >> we did get some pretty heavy showers in a couple of spots and it's all gone. some of the mountains areas to the west a few sprinkles in the mountains, that's about it. here in the baltimore, washington, annapolis area it should stay dry. the temperatures right now. we're at 70. the west winds now west southwest at around 16. gusting in the 20s. 70 degrees now. it's 54% humidity and it's going down and barometer on the way back up 29-point of 4 inches. it's -- 29.64 inches. it's 59 in oakland. they recovered with some

sunshine. 63 up in cumberland. 71 ocean city and ocean city getting some light showers and that's moving to the east right now quickly as the winds going to shift more to the west. things will clear out and that's going to get quite breezy tomorrow. 64 westminster and bel air. there's the west wind, everybody now beginning to dry out nicely. 21-mile an hour winds and hagerstown and 16 here and only 15 and 7 over in easton. low pressure that's been bugging us for about the last three days. and a front, finally moving through the region, there you can kind of see it wrapping around and moving up forward new england. it's going to be quite windy up with the low pressure and the high pressure in the ohio valley, winds across ontario, new york and new england could get up to 40 or 50 miles an hour. in our location, maybe 30-mile an hour winds tomorrow. you can see the little bit of the leftover shower activity here in west virginia. that's going to not make it over the mountains it will just dry out. the west winds just dry those

hello, i'm denise koch, thanks for staying with wjz eyewitness news. shocking video surfaces of a brawl during a high school biology class in chicago. dean reynolds reports for wjz the dispute started online and spilled over into the classroom. we have to warn you some of the video may be dig tush -- disturbing. >> reporter: the beating took place on chicago's north side and just now surfaced in all its gory detail. captured by a cell phone camera. two teenage sisters are seen attacking a fellow student during biology class on october 6th as the rest of the class including the teacher stand by and out of harm's way. the cause? apparently some insult on a social networking site. >> no one deserves to get hit like that. no one deserves to get beat up like that. >> reporter: at one point on the tape the two attackers appear to slam the head on the lab table. >> she couldn't defend herself, two people against one. >> reporter: the attackers 17 and 18 years old have been

charged with battery and suspended from school. their victim suffered bruises but was not seriously injured. in a statement, a spokesman said -- >> reporter: dean reynolds, cbs news, chicago. >> well, the 14-year-old who was attacked returned to school yesterday. right now, an amber alert remains in effect for 11-year- old william mcquain who has not been seen for nearly two weeks and kai is in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: today, station station lab telling you -- wjz has been telling you about the amber alert. the husband, 45-year-old curtis lopez was arrested in north carolina yesterday. he was driving mcquain's suv. but there was no sign of 11- year-old william. police found jane mcquain's body after a friend called police to say she hadn't heard from her in two weeks. for now lopez is charged with first degree murder.

denise? >> all right, thank you kai. wjz continues to follow developments in the story and we will bring you enough information as soon as we get it. the baltimore ravens will pay tribute to patricia modell at this weekend's game. she passed away this week. all members of the team will have this patch with the initials pbm on the back of their helmets when they take on the sec sans this sunday -- texans this sunday and also a moment of silence in her honor. her funeral is held monday and pat modell died wednesday at the age of 80. howard county police are asking for your help identifying a man who tried to rob a woman. take uplook at the surveillance -- a look at the surveillance photos. she was using the bank of america on old annapolis road when a man approached with some kind of weapon. he demanded money and she gave him money. a cab pulled up and the woman yelled. the police had arrived. the suspect took off without any money and anyone with information should call howard

county police. a troubling turn today in the federal government's gun walking scandal involving an even more dangerous weapon. cheryl atkinson reports for wjz with the latest from washington. >> reporter: police say john kingerry is u.s. citizen was a veritable grenade machine. he's accused of smuggling parts into mexico for killer drug cartels. sometimes under the direct watch of u.s. law enforcement. law enforcement sources say kingerry could have been prosecutorred twice in the u.s. for violating export control laws. but that each time, prosecutors in arizona refused to make a case. grenades are weapons of choice for the cartels. a recent attack on a casino killed 53 people. sources tell cbs news that in january 2010, atf had kingerry under surveillance after he bought about 50 grenade bodies and headed to mexico but they say prosecutors wouldn't agree to make a case. so with atf agents looking on, he and the parts crossed the

border and simply disappeared. six months later, kingerry allegedly got caught leaving the u.s. for mexico with 114 disassembled grenades and a tire. one agent told investigators he literally begged prosecutors to keep kingerry in custody the time fearing he was supplying terrorists but was again ordered to let him go. the prosecutors already the target of controversy for overseeing fast and furious couldn't comment on the grenade case. dennis burke recently resigned and his assistance was transferred. sources say hurley is the one who let kingerry go saying grenade parts are novelty items and the case lacks jury appeal. >> kingerry allegedly admitted to not only making grenades but teaching cartels how to make them. one official says there's no telling how much damage he did. well, the family of a texas rangers' baseball fan who fell to his death during a game speaks publicly for the first time. shannon stone was trying to

catch a ball tossed into the stands when he fell over a railing. his son, cooper was by his side. the mother believes the rangers are destined to play in the world series and that shannon will be watching it all. >> i think that we're going to win it for shannon this year. i think the series -- we're going to win the series. and it will be for shannon. >> the rangers are one win away from a spot in the world series. next season, the team will unveil a statue in honor of shannon and cooper at the ballpark. triple a is out with a new report on teen drivers and parents you may want to listen up beforehanding over the car keys. too late. mary is in the newsroom with the story. >> reporter: for sure, triple a looked at crashes in north carolina where a new driver was at least partially responsible. the study found teenagers are 50% more likely to crash in the first month of unsupervised driving compared to teens who had been behind the wheel with a supervised driver for a full

it is day 11 in the search for missing baby lisa irwin in kansas city. investigators just announced a $100,000 cash reward for the safe return of the baby. parties have been looking desperately within a wooded area blocks away if her home for the clues to the disappearance. the parents of the 11-month-old claim she went missing during night after they put her to sleep. new information on the imminent release of israeli soldier captured by gaza militants. sergeant gee lad sha lit likely will return home tuesday after
