some said the track was too small and the cars too fast. emergency crews rushed the 33- year-old british driver to the local hospital where he later died. three other drivers were injured, speeds at the indy 300 in las vegas exceeded 220-miles- an-hour. ed carpenter was in the race and was a close friend of dan wheldon. >> i think we all felt that there was a chance for there to be some crashes in the race because we were running close, it was fast. there were a lot of cars, you know the way the track was we we were going to be in a big pack. >> reporter: five time nascar champ was in a crash of his own but he's okay. the driver is calling to an end for indy in oval tracks. >> the oval in those speeds, there's very little zone next

to the driver. and you add open wheeling. >> reporter: wheldon's father spoke outside of their home in england. >> dan loved to be a racer and yesterday he left us doing what he loved to do. >> reporter: he won the indianapolis 400 two times and fans made a memorial outside of that track sunday. wheldon left behind a wife and two children. his is the first death in indy in 18 years. a bizarre tragedy strikes again at a high rise. emily house was found dead at the bottom of the trash shoot at the park house apartments.

police have not said yet how he died. an intention search for a missing 11-year-old boy. the boy's stepfather faces charges of killing the boy's mother. >> reporter: curtis lopez will head back to maryland under charges that he murdered his ex- wife. but what they want to do if if he can guide them to her son. who has not been seen since she was found dead ingerman town. >> i sit and cry because it's hard being in this building and you know what happened right upstairs. >> reporter: her friend says she spoke to lopez after the murder. a conversation that now gives her chills. >> i don't know the hairs on the back of my neck just went. whoop. he did not mention her, did not

mention william. >> reporter: investigators searched two parks for william but again found nothing. >> the hope is that he's still alive. however we are using teams and people experienced when the person is deceased. >> reporter: police arrested lopez in north carolina where they say he fled after the murder. according to new court records, police found another woman driving mcclain's suv, they also found mcclain's credit card and box cutter where they arrested lopez. police also found 18 copies of mcclain and his marriage certificate. >> he was she was the most kind person you would ever want to meet. >> reporter: police say they plan more searching for later in the week. in montgomery county, mike hellgren, wjz news.

lopez has not been charged in connection with williams disappearance. a maryland man won't be getting out of jail any time soon in aruba. a judge denied giordano bail. giordano says that her body slipped away when they went snorkeling. her body has not yet been found. ron smith tells his audience he is fighting pancreatic cancer. derek valcourt has the announcement and more on the disease. >> reporter: on the radio ron smith cut right to the chase. it is an advanced stage of cancer he will fight it and while he does he says his show must go on. >> a few weeks ago i began feeling unwell. >> reporter: wbal radio announcer ron smith made the

the cancer may have progressed excessively. >> something is going to get you in the end. what people should know is all is well. all is well. >> reporter: smith says that he is not happy about his diagnosis but he is at peace with it. and he says he knows he'll be in chemotherapy for the rest of whatever time he has left. we're live, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> most people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer live less than five years. workers already removed large chunks of the cathedral stone work that needs to be repaired. the cathedral is set to reopen next month.

get ready for a possible jump at the pump. governor o'malley wants to raise gas prices and now residents are outraged. >> reporter: this could be part of a jobs bill but some people tell us their jobs don't pay enough to pay for it. it wasn't the news he wanted to hear right after buying a new sports car. >> it doesn't sound so pleasing to me as i'm pulling up for gas. fifteen-cents a gallon. >> reporter: governor martin o'malley is considering an additional 15-cents a gallon to pay for infrastructure that creates jobs. >> what we have to figure out if we're willing to pay another penny to bring those things about, or another nickel or another dime or another 15- cents. >> what would you cut out of your budget? >> what would i cut out of my budget, snacks and ice cream.

to mid-50s. as you see pretty pleasant night after a very night evening. a very light wind now. tomorrow the winds will start turning more to the southeast. and that will start bringing in some atlantic moisture and look for clouds to be on the increase. why? because we have two systems not one but two headed our way. this one causing a lot of rain in south florida this afternoon. showers and thundershowers, another one across the midwest. this is headed almost due east so this one actually will be an area of low pressure over ohio that will pass just to our northwest. this low pressure is going to pass up the coast toward the carolinas, could become quite strong. they might see a wind gust over 40 miles per hour. right along the coast or so. there might be some issues even at ocean city by late wednesday early thursday. if that storm kind of rolls up the east coast it could get more powerful. in between that's where i think we're going to be in between two major storm systems. we'll have rain on wednesday, but looks like the bulk of the rain to the west or to the east of us. so we'll get rain on wednesday.

the heaviest probably coming during the morning hours. that low in florida is going to be very quick to move to the north. behind it another blast of chilly air coming in gets quite breezy behind the whole system on thursday and into friday as another cool air mass moves in. it'll get pretty chilly by the end of the week. by tomorrow both of these lows beginning to approach us. by early wednesday, i'm talking after midnight tomorrow night, probably see some showers and steady rain expected on wednesday morning and just becoming showers by late in the day. southeast winds at five to 10 knots. they'll be picking up late in the day. clear to partly cloudy, upper 40s which is pretty close to our average. tomorrow, a pretty breezy day. look for some rain to move in the area. looks like a rainy and windy wednesday. 68, 51, it'll start to clear
