and we now know police used his accused killer, his stepdad's cell phone to track the remains close to the woods close by. >> reporter: emotion was on display of loved ones as 11- year-old william mcquain mourned those. >> this is almost like in my backyard. i live in clarks burg. and it's just tragic. just really touched my heart. >> reporter: flowers and pictures line the memorial, near where police found his body in clarks burg, along with footballs and personal messages from the 6th grader's classmates. >> william was the greatest, most beautiful, most wonderful, cheerful child in the entire world. entirely world. and there's no reason this should have ever happened to him. >> reporter: as loved ones struggle to understand what happened here. police are releasing new information about their unfolding investigation. >> reporter: detectives say they uncovered more video of william with his accused killer, his stepdad, just hours

before the killing. investigators believe holo pez murdered william's mother jane, then set his sights on the boy. they saw a smiling, playful william on video with him at a storage shed, just a few hundred feet from where his body was found. never imagining what was about to happen. >> shock. horror. anger. that something like that would happen. >> reporter: lopez had a violent past. and just days before the murder, a friend claimed he fought with william's mom so much, she feared for her life. many, though, simply can't understand how someone could do something so evil. >> that's just -- it's heartbreaking. devastating. >> reporter: and as the memorial grows here, mr. lopez is going to be headed back to maryland. he is right now in north carolina and being extradited back. police are not revealing exactly when he will get here, citing safety concerns.

reporting reporting live at the memorial, as you see someone is putting something here now, in montgomery county, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news remember. >> and police say they will charge lopez with william's murder, once he is back in maryland. more than 80 cats are discovered inside a frederick county home. denise is in the newsroom with the disturbing animal abuse investigation. >> reporter: hazmat officers say they had to wear respirators to rescue the cats because the fumes in the homes were so toxic. the neglected animals were fused. one of them had to be euthanized. and the rest were recovering at frederick animal control. many suffered from respiratory problems and flea infestation. >> denise, thank you. animal control hopes to make the cats healthy enough for adoption. dozens of lions, tigers, wolves and bears escape from an exotic animal farm in ohio, forcing police to hunt them down and kill them with high- powered rifles.

danielle nottingham reports from zanesville. >> reporter: dozens of dangerous animals escaped yesterday. a couple believes it is still on the loose. >> that leave us with only two animals. one would be a muggy -- a monkey and the other, a wolf. >> reporter: he released animals, including lions, tigers and bears, before he killed himself. >> we cannot have animals running loose in this county. we were not going to have that. >> some are criticizing the sheriff for not using tranquilizers. but he has supporters. >> somebody had to do something. you can't say, i'll check on it in the morning. you can't do that with lions and tigers. he did what he had to do, period. >> reporter: the animals are

putting people in this small town on edge. >> we work on cattle. and some brought a gun. >> ken maxwell drove 50 miles, hoping to see an exotic animal. >> i'm retired and i thought i'd come down. >> reporter: police say they have received numerous complaints about animals on the reserve. authorities were reportedly in the process of trying to close it down. >> in total, there were 56 dangerous animals on the loose. 18 of them tigers. ohio has some of the nation's weakest restrictions on exotic pets and some of the highest numbers of injuries and deaths from them. a maryland man is behind bars, charged with sexually abusing a teenager in baltimore county. police say he contacted his victims, using facebook. jessica kartalija has the latest. >> reporter: police tell wjz, that at least two victims have been abused in this case. they believe there may be many more out there.

>> reporter: 22-year-old branon sukforth sits in a cell at the baltimore county detention center, charged with multiple sex offenses, against two teens. >> one of the victims is 14 years old. and his mother became suspicious. when she found some communications that indicated that her son was having some kind of sexual activity with a man. >> reporter: that's when police began investigating sukforth, who used the alias, braden clark on a facebook page, to contact his victims. >> that investigation not only confirmed the sexual activity with this victim, but also revealed that this suspect had been having sexual activity with another victim, a 13-year- old. >> reporter: police tell us that sukforth lived here in severn, on the 8200 block of quarterfield road. at this point, it's unclear where his victims live. >> it's tragic. i think god had something special for those who harm children.

>> reporter: this neighbor asks that we not show her face on camera. >> it concerned me because i have a disabled child. who doesn't talk. so it would be a concern to me. you know? and i never know if something could happen to him. and being in the neighborhood, just moving into the neighborhood, those are definite concerns. >> reporter: police say sukforth lied to his victims, telling them he was 17 and 19 years old. he's now charged with sexual solicitation of a minor, perverted practice, and second, third, and fourth degree sex offense. >> reporter: and again, police tell wjz, they believe there may be many more victims out there. if you have any information or can help, you are urged to call baltimore county police. >> police say the teens were sexually abused in february and september of this year. more key witnesses take the stand today. the bribery trial against maryland state senator ulysses

s. curry. weijia jiang is following today's testimony. weema? -- weekia? >> -- weijia. >> they're hoping to paint a picture of a trustworthy lawmaker who is not a criminal. >> reporter: in federal court, a parade of high-profile politicians is threatening to take the stand. it in support of their colleague. currie is accused of taking a bribe for $245,000. on wednesday, maryland senator brian thrush testified currie is honest. he said, quote, in annapolis, people tend to become full of themselves when they're elected, they act arrogant, senator currie is opposite of that. he doesn't try to spin things. he doesn't try to tell you what he thinks you want to hear. he tells you the truth, end

quote. >> reporter: defense attorneys admit currie worked as a consultant for shoppers, but they say he didn't realize he had to disclose that. >> some say he is not bright enough to organize a scam. >> reporter: but prosecutors aren't buying the so-called stupidity plea. they're also trying to convict two shoppers executives. the defense continues to try to build profiles of all three men as being upstanding and unaware they were breaking any laws. >> when court wrapped up a short time ago, jurors were hearing from another shop consultant-- another consultant for shoppers. for now, we're live at the federal courthouse, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. both governor martin o'malley and former governor bob ehrlich

are expected to testify on currie's behalf at some point during the trial. it's overcast now, with showers moving through the area. let's check in with bob turk who is tracking live doppler radar. >> we have drizzle and showers now to the south of us. take a look at radar. most of northern maryland. just cloudy skies with light drizzle. but to the south of us, we have a batch of thundershowers. popping up across central virginia. ask they're moving to the north. they may be affecting areas west of d.c. and west of the baltimore region later this evening. it's still possible we could see a thundershower in our region. right now, south of the city, from annapolis, down toward waldorf, queenstown. light activity. and in delaware, heavy activity, all moving off to the north. so we have a chance of more showers tonight. and yes, maybe even a gusty thundershower or a thunderstorm. now, tomorrow, the rain will be gone. low pressure to the west gets really wrapped up. that means winds will be pushing out of here. we'll have a lot of sunshine.

prosecutors in the trial of michael jackson's doctor could rest their case today. attorneys for dr. conrad murray will then try to convince the jury that the pop singer caused his own death. sandra hughes reports for wjz

from the courthouse in los angeles. >> reporter: prosecutors questioned their final witness, an anesthesiologist, who uses propofol to put patients under during surgery. >> i am asked every day i'm in the operating room, i tell patients what i'm going to do. and i'm asked the question, are you going to give me the drug that killed michael jackson? >> reporter: dr. schaefer contends that it is safe when used savely. but prosecutors contend it was not safe for dr. murray to use the drug as a sleeping aid, and that it ultimately killed his superstar patient. prosecutors are expected to rest their case today. they say mur seguilty of voluntary manslaughter and have used experts and eyewitnesses and even a recording of an impaired michael jackson to try to prove their case. >> reporter: murray's lawyers are expected to lay out his defense on friday. they'll try to convince jurors that michael jackson caused his ob own death. >> reporter: the defense is expected to claim the singer

take a look at this. you can barely see the ground from our tower cam. it's the at the harbor cam. >> these clouds. probably around 200, 300 feet. that's about it. or even lower. fog is really clouds on the ground. so technically, it's really not fog. they are just low clouds. now, if you look up, you won't see the top of the building. because the clouds are so low. but on the ground, that's when we call it fog. now, we do have some rain in the region. south of us right now. and shower and thundershower activity. and across virginia. all of that is moving to the north. we may see these thundershowers. northeast of charlottesville. light rain moving in to aa county and east of washington. and across the upper eastern shore. that's moving toward us as well. also, the portions of kent county, queen anne's county. delaware. that's moving up toward the north. we'll see some of that rain

this evening. maybe thundershowers as well. 67 degrees now. this is as warm as it has been now. 70, easton. a little sun. only 50s to the west. slightly dryer air, trying to move into the western areas. we can see that later tonight. temperatures in the mid-60s to low 70s, now reported in annapolis and kent island. it has warmed up. that means there is a little instability in the atmosphere. as the temperatures warm. that's why some of these thunderstorms are forming to the south. we have a risk of thunder and lightning later this evening. right now, east winds very strong at pax river. most areas anywhere from 5 to 15 miles an hour. and because of that, the winds are pushing the water. and at a coastal flood warning for these areas. high tide late tonight. and on the eastern shore for

tomorrow, because the winds will shift more to the west and push the water across the bay. tomorrow going to be 1 to 2- foot above normal tides on the bay. south of our region. carolinas moved offshore. the bulk. rain now moved well to the northwest. and also, you can see the low pressure spinning across ohio, indiana. that rain is moving up to the north. but the southern limit a front associated with it. and also maybe a thundershower. then it dries out quickly tomorrow. as the lows pass the region. dryer air quickly moving in. and eventually, it will turn cooler tomorrow night. friday and sidesaturday. the weekend. lots of sunshine. specifically cooler than we've seen the last couple of days. winds on the bay, picking up gusts as high as 30 knots on the bay. and a small craft advisory through the afternoon tomorrow. bay temp, 66. showers, maybe drizzle. and maybe thunder possible with

maryland and virginiaargs a little over 30 tornadoes every year. we are already well past that. 2011 has been a hyperactive year. >> reporter: without any notice, they can strike? >> i have never actually see one develop in front of my eyes before. >> just last week in virginia, folks there saw seven tornadoes that left behind hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, all confirmed by the national weather service. >> whoa. look at that. it's a tornado. >> reporter: last month, it happened in ocean city. a twister ripped right through the resort town. >> furniture was just slamming against everything. >> reporter: in the maryland- virginia region alone, more than 50 twisters have touched ground this year, it's the second most active year on record, compared to 2004, when 87 tornadoes swept through the area. >> for the whole country, this has been a record-breaking

year. >> reporter: wjz meteorologist bernadette woods says the storms are stronger than average, too. she said the boost in tornadoes comes from a perfect combination of weather patterns nationwide. >> there was a clash of really cold air from the north. extremely warm air from the south that came together the right way. >> reporter: while tornado season hits between may and september, experts are seeing tornadoes strike later in the year, like this one in baltimore city that hit this apartment complex, back in november last year. >> that is very late in the season for that to happen, although it can happen any time, if you have the right set of parameters coming together. >> reporter: so you have to always be prepared. and to put this into even more perspective, maryland and virginia have had more twisters than kansas ask just as many as oklahoma. back to you. >> first warning weather coverage continues with bob turk. he's tracking showers in the area. bob? >> oddly enough, we have some

thundershower activity going on in virginia right now. take a look at radar. stuff going on southwest of washington. all moving off to the north as you can see take a closer look at this stuff. thunderstorms developing. a little warmer activity down there. and southwest of fredericksburg. there's a possibility that even in the baltimore metro, washington area and west of us, we'll see some thundershower activity yet this evening, along with some more showers. but it will clear out late tonight. looks like a lot of sun headed our way. a powerful tornado in florida leaves a trail of destruction behind. the storm peeled off roofs and tossed cars into the air in broward county. heavy rain soaked an already soggy region leaving behind flooded roads and fallen trees. the tornado packed 130-mile-per- hour winds. stay with wjz first warning weather to find forecast updates on live doppler radar any time, log onto wjz.com. there's new video from the ohio town, where more than 50

dangerous animals escaped from a farm. this cell phone video shows one of the bears on the loose dozens of lions and tigers. most of the exotic animals have been killed, according to police. schools in the area were closed. and neighbors were told to stay at home. new developments tonight on the search for a missing baby in kansas city. denise has moron -- more on where police are focusing their efforts. >> reporter: police obtained a search warrant for the home where 10-month-old lisa irwin was last seen weeks ago. investigators combed through the backyard. the warrant also bars the irwin family from returning home. the mother, deborah bradley, admitted to heavily drinking the night the baby disappeared. >> jeremy irwin says the little girl's bedroom window was

tampered with the night she disappeared. a fourth person was arrested in a horrific case of four mentally disabled adult being held. >> reporter: philadelphia authorities took 10 people into protective custody tuesday, including six children, ranging in age from 2 to 19 nconnection with their case against linda weston and her two alleged accomplices. one of those in custody is weston's 19-year-old niece, who was reported missing in 2009. police say she was found severely malnourished and had signs of physical abuse. >> you'll have to remember, juveniles involved in this had traveled with them, from pennsylvania, texas, virginia and florida. >> reporter: weston and thomas and wright were arrested saturday night, after the discovery of four mentally- gabled adults in a locked basement. police say weston claimed to be a caregiver, but was, in fact,

taking their social security checks. authority says there may have been as many as 50 victims. it doesn't appear any of the children were held captive. but several were found malnourished. police say more kests -- tests are needed to figure out who their parents are. two of them could have belonged to tamara breeden, one of weston's alleged victims. >> police identified one of the those arrested as the daughter of the ringleader linda weston. lindsay lohan is back in handcuffs. lohan just posted $100,000 bail. the judge says she must work at a county morgue, 16 hours a week, until her next court appointment in november. the life and accomplishments of apple ceo steve jobs are celebrated today at the company's headquarters. employees gathered at the outdoor amphitheater. the private service was also broadcast to employees at apple stores across the country.

converged on parliament to block lawmakers from entering the building to vote on the new measure. riot police fired tear gas on demonstrators, who threw gas bombs and stones and lit several fires. the government deployed 3,000 officers in central athens to try to contain the violence. this is the first of a two-day strike. union members say it's the biggest in years. this woman says, i'm joining in because the situation is tragic. people from all walks of life stayed away from their jobs. flights were canceled. and ferries remained at the port. stores and schools were shut down. and tourists were kept away from the acropolis. >> yeah, it is very disappointing. >> reporter: greece's prime minister pleaded with demonstrators to return to their jobs, saying the clashes were not helping matters. greece must pass the spending plan to keep getting cash from

an international bailout. otherwise, the government warns it will go bankrupt. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. european leaders are working on a new rescue plan for greece to protect neighboring countries from being dragged deeper into debt. the european summit is set for sunday in brussels. in australia, a woman is attacked by a kangaroo, while walking her dogs. the woman says she believes it's a miracle she survived the attack. she needed more than 20 stitches after the kangaroo clawed more than her face and body. although kangaroos are common in australia, attacks are very rare. scary moments on a plane, caught on tape. passengers scream as oxygen masks drop from the ceiling. >> put on your mask! >> reporter: a passenger on board the flight from denver to las vegas took this video on a cell phone. he said as the plane approached aspen, the plane lost cabin pressure, forcing the oxygen

>> now, leading experts from the american cancer society and the u.s. preventive traffic force says for most women, they don't need to be done every year. >> the more often you do your test, the higher chance you will come up with what we call a false positive. and that can can be harm -- harmful. >> overtreatment is a big concern in women, especially those who plan to have children. because it can damage parts of the cervix. >> reporter: but the pap has led to a significant drop in cervical cancer in the past 30 years. >> we know about 50% of those who have had invasive cervical cancer have not had adequate screening in the years prior to that diagnosis. >> reporter: the virus causes cervical cancer.

but experts say they should not replace the pap test. >> new guidelines say women should begin at 21. and most healthy women do not need to be tested. the united states healthcare system doesn't get good grades on a report card. the commonwelt gives -- commonwealth gives 64 out of 100 points. the report also says obama care has the potential to improve the system. the number of friends you have on facebook hay indicate the size of your brain. british scientists say clem students with a large number of facebook friends also have more brain tissue in the region which processes memory and emotional responses. it's not known if having more facebook friends makes your brain larger or if some people are just predisposed to having more friends. >> there are a number of
