meghan mccorkell has details just released by police. meghan? >> reporter: mary, you can see baltimore county police are still out here at this house, on bird river road in whitemarsh. it is the scene of a reported murder-suicide. an 85-year-old man and his 84- year-old wife, found dead just before 3:00 this afternoon. we're told that a family member had come to check on them and found them shot and killed in the living room. now, detectives tell us that a suicide note was found inside the home here. i just spoke with a family friend who said the couple was not having any kind. financial difficulties, but he tells me the husband had been sick. he had apparently been in and out of the hospital this year. he thinks it was potentially because of a stroke. now, at this point, county police are not releasing the identities of the couple until all of the family is informed. but they will be out here on the scene and so will we. for now, we're in whitemarsh, i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> such a sad story.

we're still working to get more information. we'll bring you the latest tonight on eyewitness news at 6:00. justice for a promising johns hopkins researcher, who was murdered, just blocks from his baltimore home. today, his killer learns his fate. but he still says he didn't do it. wjz is live at mitchell courthouse. weijia jiang is there for today's sentencing. >> reporter: denise, frankly, the judge clearly didn't care what john waggoner had to say. he said he would show john waggoner the same mercy shown to the victim by handing down the harshest punishment allowed in this case. >> reporter: 38-year-old john waggoner will die in prison. a judge gave him a life sentence plus 20 years, for felony murder of stephen pitcairn, a johns hopkins student in 2010. since the beginning, pitcairn's family have said little. they left the courthouse without a public comment. >> it's hard for them. because they have to move on

with their life, without their son and brother. >> reporter: steven pits karen's mother was on -- pitcairn's mother was on the phone when he was attacked. she said the attacker doesn't belong to be free. she said i would never want another family to be through the horror we have been through. >> reporter: waggoner addressed the court and the family. waggoner said, i do not believe that justice has been served. because there is still a killer out there. i can't stand here and apologize or be apologetic to the family because i am not responsible. >> i'm glad he got what was coming to him. >> reporter: prosecutors relied heavily on his girlfriend, lavelva meritt. it's a case state attorney greg gregg bernstein used to win his job. waggoner has a lengthy criminal past. now he'll never walk free again.

>> reporter: and waggoner's public defender says he will file an appeal. we're live in downtown baltimore tonight. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you, weijia. lavelva meritt is scheduled to be sentenced next month. a trial is under way for a man charged with murder in a murder murder-for-hire plot. prosecutors say he shot william porter. during opening statements, the defense said bishop acted under extreme pressure from porter's wife carla. she allegedly hired several people to help with the murder. the trial is being held in harford county because of publicity surrounding the case. videos of local high school students having sex on school property are gaining worldwide attention. wjz first broke the story. and now, some of the teens could face criminal charges. we're live until northwest baltimore. mike hellgren has the fallout and the latest from police. mike? >> reporter: well, these scandals, denise, have caused a lot of pain for several families, both here in the city

and with the county. and with the technology that is available these days other it's so easy for a video to go from one campus to around the globe. >> reporter: video of students as young as 14, having sex on school grounds in baltimore has spread online. police say rumors of an arrest, involving frederick douglas high students, where a girl says she was recorded without her knowledge, are false. although they are still investigating. and people just can't stop talking about that viral video posted on you tube, facebook and twitter. >> it's really nothing new. it's just that her age is what is worrying everybody. >> everybody else thought it was a cool idea and thought it would be cooler to videotape it and put it up on their web. of all revolting, disgusting things to do to you. >> of those individuals who find pleasure in other people's pain, i wonder what makes you so special to give you the right to do so? >> reporter: it's -- although

it's considered child pornography, millions of people have watched the video around the world. >> i said, no, not my child. >> reporter: one father said his daughter had to transfer to another school. >> it hurts a lot of people. not just her, not just her reputation, but also her family. >> reporter: there's an ongoing investigation in baltimore county, where police have charged three young people with having sex in the auditorium, at milford mill academy, during class. deputies believe the encounter was taped and shared. >> it really becomes like a victim wraigz with -- victimization process. when they take the pictures and put them on you tube. no respect, disregard and cheapening, if you will, the physical intimacy act. >> reporter: and with the internet, it's a scandal nearly impossible to erase. >> reporter: in the baltimore county case, it is unclear now what disciplinary actions have been taken against the students from the schools.

we're waiting for a new statement from them. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> the students in the milford mills case are charged with indecent exposure and performing a perverted sex act. a teenager and a recent morgan state university graduate are both killed in an accident in fells point. their vehicles collided late last night on south broadway. the victims are 18-year-old zoe crump ton and 23-year-old julie benson. benson was a popular homecoming king at morgan state. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. the end is in sight for thousands of troops. today, president obama announced all american forces in iraq will come home by the end of the year. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from the white house. >> reporter: president obama is declaring an end to the war in iraq. >> our troops in iraq. will definitely be home for the holidays. >> reporter: from the white house briefing room, the president said all u.s. forces will be on their way home by the end of this year.

his announcements came after a secure video conference with iraqi prime minister nouri al- maliki. the two leaders congratulated each other and promised to move forward as allies. >> but our diplomats and civilian advisers in the lead, will help iraqis strengthen leaders who are just and accountable. >> reporter: the white house spent months negotiating with iraqi forces there. but in the end, officials wouldn't agree to give them immunity from prosecution from the court. that was a deal breaker for the obama administration. >> reporter: nearly 40,000 u.s. troops will come home or be deployed. only a small number of marines will stay on to secure the u.s. embassy in baghdad. >> reporter: top administration advisers are confident, iraq is ready to stand on its own. >> iraq is emerging as a secure, stable and self-reliant

marriage. >> in the event that the bill ask pass the 2012 legislation, it is most likely it will go on the general referendum in november. governor o'malley also appears on you tube, in support of same-sex marriage. more people are out of a job in maryland. the state's unemployment rate went up again in december to -- september to 7.4%. economists are warning that the numbers may be skewed, though. because it was done when 7,000 verizon employees were on strike. well, enjoying some fall weather. tonight, it's calm. it's dry. we are hoping these conditions last. let's check in with bob turk and the first warning weather center. bob? >> we've had a few clouds around. but tonight, it's going to clear out. it's going to be a chilly night. but all in all, looks like a very nice weekend. at 56 degrees now. the dew points low at 40, which means tonight, it will get pretty chilly.

new fallout. tonight, the investigation is calling for an investigation into how he was killed. gigi barnett reports with the latest. officials in libya are waiting to bury the body of moammar gadhafi. leaders of the tradition plan to bury the dictator today. but these gruesome images about his capture sparked questions about his treatment. the humane rights office called for an investigation into what happened in the dictator's final moments. neighboring officials say they didn't know gadhafi was riding in the group of vehicles they targeted on thursday. after a pair of air strikes on the convoy, commanders say they learned their actions likely helped the rebels capture gadhafi. >> reporter: nato's top

and with calm conditions and clear skies, you can have temperatures dropping down close to the dew point, which is 40. that's probably going to be our average temperature tonight. some of the neighborhoods, north and west of town, interior sections, even in the eastern shore, away from the water, could come down to 36 or 37 tonight. it's going to be a chilly night. if you have any of those tender plants outside, tropicals, they should not be outside tonight. in fact, the last couple of weeks, you probably should have been inside. a lot of those tropicals can't take temperatures much less than 50 degrees. so it's going to hurt them if you leave them out. even though we don't expect to see frost, it will still hurt them. as far as the east coast is concerned, up to our north, still cloudy, still some rain shower activity across northern new england. that low still spinning around over quebec. and it's because of that low that we're getting some clouds still coming off the great lakes. you see those sprinkles up to our north. new york state, pennsylvania. south of us, sunshine all day long. really just south of the baltimore, washington area.

it's been really pleasant. over the next 24 hours. that low continues to move away. high pressure moves in. nice fall conditions. it will be dry, a lot of sunshine all weekend long. with a weak front passing to the north. really of no consequence at all. looks like the next weather maker has another front coming down. at this point, looks like dry conditions for saturday, sunday. probably monday, a few clouds. as a little warmer air comes in as this high moves off the coast, the winds go a little more to the southwest, bringing in some milder conditions. on the bay, west winds, barely moving at 5 knots. the bay temp around 63. sunrise, 7:23. boy, that's getting late. sun sets now at 6:19. so tonight, look for clear conditions. it will be chilly. but temperatures ranging from 36 to 45 overnight. tomorrow, a lot of sunshine. very pleasant, nice afternoon. high, a little warmer than today. back up to 63 degrees.

it is 5:28. 56 degrees and partly sunny. good evening and thank you for staying with eyewitness news. we are following breaking news in harford county. sky eye chopper 13 is over a multicar accident in bel air. captain mike perry has more for us. mike? >> reporter: hello, denise. we're on the bypass. three-car collision is completely closed. the southbound bel air bypass. apparently, three of these cars or one striking a guardrail and several colliding with each other. at least two people are going to be transported to local area hospitals. as you can see, fire personnel and police do have the bel air bypass closed and the backup extends for about two miles.

victims of flight 103. many of the families visited throughout the day. major developments in the case of a missing kansas city baby, including three new witnesses who have come forward. all three say they saw a man walking the streets with an infant on the night lisa irwin went missing. also, lawyers for the parents of baby lisa say the police tried to force confessions from jeremy irwin and deborah bradley. bradley recently admitted to drinking heavily on the night her daughter went missing. reno will be without a valuable piece of information. the national transportation board says there is no readable information. 11 people were killed, include the pilot, jimmyley -- jimmy leeward. the prosecution is winding down its manslaughter case against michael jackson's doctor. as karen brown reports for wjz, conrad murray's defense team will get their chance to cross-

examine a key witness. >> the difference. >> reporter: a leading expert on propofol set up an iv line in court, to show jurors what was in michael jackson's bedroom. dr. steve schaefer testified that it's highly unlikely the pop singer could have given himself the fatal dose of a powerful anesthetic. >> people don't just wake up hell bent to grab the next dose in a sir ridge, -- syringe, draw it up and inject themselves. >> reporter: the prosecution repeatedly blamed dr. can rad murray for michael jackson's death. >> he has been entrusted by michael jackson to look out for his safety every night. and he has failed that responsibility. >> reporter: the trial has been going on for a month now. and next week, the defense will start calling more than a dozen witnesses, including a propofol expert of its own. dr. schaefer's former teacher. >> reporter: dr. paul white has

been taking notes in court. he's expected to back the defense's claims that jackson could have administered the fatal dose himself. lawyers for dr. murray are also expected to call character witnesses. maybe even the singer's makeup artist. she claims the singer was distraught and in no shape to launch a comeback. >> the defense says its case should be wrapped up by the end of next week. the biographer of apple ceo steve jobs is speaking for the first time about how the visionary handled the disease that took his life. he said for nine months, jobs delayed potentially life-saving surgery for cancer. instead, he opted for alternative therapies. he was asked why jobs initially refused the surgery. >> i think that he kind of felt that if you ignore something, if you don't want something to exist, you can have magical thinking. and it had worked for him in

teenagers rescued from weston and three other suspects after they had allegedly kidnapped and abused them. >> it hurts. it is hurtful, you see what i'm saying? and they do have my sister jean in custody. >> reporter: as a dsa worker brought the children's files in court, we have learned that one of the teenagers, in fact, is weston's daughter, who is 8 months pregnant, and already has a 2-year-old child. another one of those rescued. police revealing at a press conference on wednesday, they believe weston may have attempted to get those she abducted and held captive to produce children so that she and the other suspects could continue stealing social security earnings. >> hopefully she doesn't have nothing to do with it. if she did, like i said, justice will be served. >> reporter: as a judge ordered dna testing to determine the exact identities of all nine children and teenagers, the case that began in a in a grimy

watch as the out-of-control car smashes through a newspaper store in sydney, australia. it sent this tumbling down with the baby boy inside. the car crashed through. but nobody was hurt in the accident. many people in a california community opened their wallets to help pay for a baby's funeral. but imagine their surprise when they found out the funeral was fake. ed lawrence reports for wjz. four people are arrested. and the victims are speaking out. >> reporter: they say four people preyed on the gen rosility -- gen rossity of others. the woman had a picture of a child and said the woman holding it said she needed money for a funeral for the baby. nichols told police she didn't even know the baby in the picture. sessy salin fell for it. >> i've seen her a couple of times. and you other than -- you know,

i even gave them some money, too. >> billy green said this was an organized scam. after arresting nichols, police picked up katherine mendez, chastity doll, all charged with theft under false pretenses. sergeant green says they made between $ en00 -- $700 and $1400 a day. >> instead of seeking gainful employment, they decided they'd rather stand on street corners and tell lies. and based on the emotional aspects involved with it, to get people to given them -- give them large sums of money. >> police say carter convinced them to stand on the corner and do the scam. >> reporter: fontana police say they duped the people on the corner for years. >> they're just low lifes. they decided to pull at people's emotions and to

swindle them out of money. >> because they know the weakness of other people. >> now, she says they will be at the sign. >> two other people were arrested in june for a similar scheme. the image of the baby was taken off the internet. some were arrested after advertising to the community. police were tipped off to the operation by neighbors who found, quote, heroin for sale signs posted near their homes. residents took license plate numbers and took pictures of suspected drug activity. police found a small meth lab, drugs, guns, cash. and six people were arrested. a great white shark attacks and almost kills a surfer. the shark chomped about two feet off. despite warning signs, many are undeterred. gum's friend ron clifford was

>> in tonight's wjz healthwatch, the largest study to date on cell phones and cancer has just been released. as tina kraus reports for wjz, the findings are good news for cell phone users. >> reporter: the possible link between cell phones and cancer is something that has worried people for years. >> i think there is a link, frankly. >> do you? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: but researchers in denmark say their new study shows long-term use of cell phones does not cause brain cancer. the largest study of its kind examined 350,000 people who used cell phones over an 18- year period. scientists found cell use was not at a greater use for developing brain cancer. >> they didn't find a greater risk of tumors in the head or central system tumors. >> but london epidemiologist paul elliott says more research must be done on people who use the cell phone for decades.
