river road. you can see police are still out here tonight. and they tell wjz they are investigating this as a murder- suicide. neighbors and family friends we spoke with are just in shock. >> reporter: family members checking on the elderly couple, found them shot dead, inside their living room. >> this was a husband and wife. he was 85 years old. she was 84 years old. they left a note. there is no suspicion of foul play. >> reporter: police have not released the content of that note. but a family friend says the husband had recently been sick. >> yes. he had been sick in the past year. i'm not exactly sure. i think he might have had a stroke. and he was having problems with dealing with that. >> reporter: neighbors distraught about the loss, the couple lived here a long time and had family in the area including two daughters. >> that's all she's got is her father -- stepmother and father and the sister in the back. >> reporter: and that family

friend tells us, he doesn't believe the family had any facility -- financial difficulties. meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> wjzville the -- wjz will have the latest on this developing story tonight at 11:00. a man accused of brutally murdering a teenager with a hatchet. 37-year-old larry horton was arrested yesterday in rural alabama. he's charged in the murder of 18-year-old ryan jackson, who police say was killed with a hatchet. his body discarded in a remote area of curtis bay. when police went to horton's lands down home, they found blood on the wall, carpet and ceiling, the apartment was recently cleaned. police are trying to determine how the men knew each other. the crime rocked charles village. a johns hopkins researcher, killed while walking home from penn station. tonight, his killer learns his fate. wjz is live. weijia jiang explains how long john waggoner will spend in

prison. >> police said the judge was showing the convicted killer the same mercy that was shown to the victim when he handed down the most serious punishment in this case. >> reporter: 38-year-old john waggoner will die in prison. a judge gave him a life sentence plus 20 years. for the murder of steven stephen pitcairn, a johns hopkins researchers stabbed it death. since the beginning, pitcairn's family have said little in public. they left the courthouse without commenting. >> i think they're happy with the verdict. it's hard for them because they have it move -- to move on with their lives at this point, without their son and brother am. >> reporter: pitcairn's mom was on the phone with him at the time of the attack. she called waggoner an eeferl man who doesn't belong in society after such a senseless, disgusting tragedy. she said, i would never want another family to bear the horror we have been through. >> reporter: waggoner addressed the court, too, and pitcairn's

family. even moments before he was sentenced are he maintained his nbc. -- innocence. >> reporter: waggoner said i don't believe justice was served because there is still a killer out there. he said, i can't apologize to the family because i am not responsible. >> i'm glad he got what was coming to him. >> reporter: prosecutors relied heavily on the testimony of lavelva merit. she was cleared of her charges in exchange for testimony against him. waggoner has a lengthy criminal past. now he'll never walk free again. >> and waggoner's public defender says he will file an appeal. reporting live tonight, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, weijia. lavelva merit is scheduled to be sentenced next month. prosecutors say walter bishop fate fatally shot bishop

she recorded without her knowledge are false, although they are still investigating. and people just can't stop talking about that viral video, posted on you tube, facebook and twitter. >> to me, the whole thing is repulsive. i wouldn't do that for anyone. i just wouldn't. >> in public. in school. which is like a major, major, major problem for me. >> you guys need to just cut it out and leave her alone. she did it. you spread it. you've seen it. oh, well. >> reporter: although it's considered child pornography, millions of people have watched the video around the world. >> i don't think this little girl should have did what she did. but she did it. i don't think this little boy should have got what he got but he got it. and now what are we going to do about it? >> reporter: the child's devastated father spoke exclusively to wjz and said his daughter had to transfer to another school. >> it hurts a lot of people. not just her. not just her reputation.

definitely be home for the holidays. >> reporter: from the white house briefing room, the president said all u.s. forces will be on their way home by the end of this year. his announcements came after a secure video conference with iraqi prime minister, nouri al- maliki. the two leaders congratulated each other and promised to move forward as allies. >> with our diplomats and civilian advisers in the lead, will help iraqis strengthen institutions that are just, representative, and accountable. >> the white house spent months negotiating with iraqi leaders to keep several thousand troops there as a training force. but in the end, officials wouldn't agree to give them impmunity from prosecution in iraqi courts. that was a deal breaker for the obama administration. >> reporter: the nearly 40,000 u.s. troops in iraq right now will come home or be redeployed. only a small group of marines will stay on to secure the u.s. embassy in baghdad. >> reporter: top administration advisers are confident, iraq is

the leaders of the revolution in libya are holding off on burying the body of moammar gadhafi, pending the investigation of how he died. it comes as nato's mission winds down. and they start to confront a challenging road ahead. >> reporter: officials in libya are waiting to bury the body of moammar gadhafi, leaders of the transitional government plan to follow islamic tradition and bury the former dictator today. but these gruesome images of his capture sparked new curiosity about his treatment. they are looking into what happened in the dictator's final moment. nato officials say they didn't

council says libya's interim dictator plans to declare the country free on saturday, the same place the revolution against gadhafi began. two nuclear reactors shut down. did not suffer significant damage and are ready to restart. crews have gone over the north finding nothing to prevent them from going back online. the reactors are about 11 miles from the quake's epicenter. the seismic vibrations from the 5.82 magnitude earthquake caused them to shut down automatically. odds are, right now, hackers are probing department of defense computers, look figure are -- looking for a way to peek in. now, mike schuh reports of a gathering. >> the weapons in this war aren't conventional. you can't see them, unless you know where to look. the disabling strike may come out of thin air. computer codes, delivered from next door are a continent away.

7:15. in the afternoon, it's going to get darker and darker and darker. until december 21st, when the sun will be setting around 4:40. and then the days get longer once again. so for the next month or two, it's going to get dark every afternoon. take a look at temps around the region now. we're at 55. oakland at 37. 58, ocean city. locally, in the low to mid-50s around the region. and it will be chilly tonight, with the winds dying down. we still have a breeze at 12 miles per hour. but many polices below 10. that will help to drop temperatures. low pressure to our north. still over quebec and slowly moving away. but it's still spinning around and still bringing moisture and clouds around. some of this has already create sprinkles of rain to our north. wasn't quite cold enough for show.

we really didn't see anything in the way of wet snowflakes. but nice, high pressure over the eastern half of the united states. will give us a nice fall weekend. now there's a weak front going to pass to our north. by the latter part of the weekend, shouldn't do anything for us. for the most part, looking for a lot of sunshine. monday, maybe a few clouds. and as high pressure moves off the coast, our winds go back to the southwest. a little warmer air coming in. may bring a few clouds. that warm air overrides the cool air that we'll have around here. on the bay, very light winds on the bay tomorrow. i 5 knots. that's about it. sunrise, 7:23. sets, just a little while ago. 6:19. and the bay temp now down to 63. tonight, it will clear out. it will be chilly. 36 to 45 overnight, big change. we'll call it an average of 41. tomorrow, a lot of sunshine. a beautiful day. maybe just a few passing clouds in the afternoon. tomorrow's high, close to normal. normal high tomorrow is around 64, 65. so we'll call it 63 degrees.

it is just before 6:30. a few clouds and 55 degrees on this friday. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the prosecution winds down its manslaughter case against michael jackson's doctor. as karen brown reports for wjz, from the courthouse, defense lawyers are getting their chance to cross-examine a key witness.

>> reporter: a leading expert on propofol set up an iv line in court to show jurors what was in michael jackson's bedroom. dr. steven schaefer testified that it's highly unlikely the pop singer could have given himself the fatal dose of a powerful anesthetic. >> reporter: people just don't wake up, hell bent to grab the next dose in a syringe, draw it up and shove it in their iv again. it's a crazy scenario. >> reporter: the key witness for the prosecution repeatedly blamed dr. conrad murray for jackson's death. >> he has been entrusted, by michael jackson, to look out for his safety every night. and he has failed that responsibility. >> reporter: the trial has been going on for a month now. and next week, the defense will finally start calling more than a dozen witnesses, including a propofol expert of its own, dr. schaefer's former teacher. >> reporter: dr. paul white has been taking notes in court.

he's expected to back the defense's claims that jackson could have administered the fatal dose himself. lawyers for dr. murray are also expected to call character witnesses, maybe even the singer's long-time makeup artist. she claims the singer was distraught and was in no shape to launch a comeback. in los angeles, karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> the defense is expected to call about 15 witnesses and could be wrapped up by the middle of next week. for the first time california police released the frantic calls to 911 as a man opens fire on coworkersa the a quarry. heavily-armed police flooded the cupertino neighborhood. last month, he killed three people and wounded seven. allman had an assault rifle and a handgun when he walked into work and began shooting. what happened was we were having a safety meeting and one guy went postal. he went home, and went postal and pulled out an ak-47.

year-old thea cohen. >> he killed her. and he also, really in a sense killed me. >> reporter: thea's mother says for 23 years, her family and others have been denied justice. but now she feels some vindication that moammar gadhafi has been captured and killed. >> i make no apologies for wanting to dance on his grave. i am delighted. >> reporter: susan cohen said she watched the video over and over and then saw this. >> wonderful picture am i'm going to attempt to put it on my wall. i'm not kidding about that. i'll throw darts at it every morning. >> reporter: a maryland mother, rosemary mild, of severna park, lost her 21-year-old daughter miriam in the pan am scatter. >> i'm choked up all day. she was deprived of her beautiful life. but she lives on in spirit. >> reporter: on thursday night, libyan americans celebrated in front of the white house. many remember the terror of gadhafi's regime. just like so many victims, family members of pan am do, too.

>> especially for the day in court. >> at arlington national cemetery, there is a memorial dedicated to the victims of night 103 and many visited throughout the day. a recent graduate from morgan state university is one of two young people killed in a violent crash in fells point. the crash happened here at the intersection of south broadway. 23-year-old julian benson, collided with a mitsubishi eclipse. an 18-year-old apparently in the eclipse was also killed. police are investigating. it is possible one of the victims may have run a red light at the intersection. and a disturbing incident inside a dorm room at a maryland college. police arrest justin morgan for illegally entering a torm and hiding in a women's bathroom. he was arrested for trespassing. he is being held on $25,000 bail. time now for a look at some

used cell phones over an 18- year period. scientists found cell users were not at a greater risk of developing brain cancer. >> they didn't find an excess risk of tumors in their head or central nervous system tumors. >> reporter: but london epidemiologist, paul elliott, says more research must be done on people who use the cell phone for decades. >> about 5 billion people worldwide use the cell phone. and many say the convenience will always outweigh any potential health risk. >> you've got a phone. you use it. and that's it. >> okay. >> hope for the best, right? >> i text more than i talk. right? so i'm not really worried about it. >> reporter: health expert says texting and other ways of keeping the phone away go your head is always good advice. >> reduce your exposure. >> reporter: scientists admit their exposure was somewhat limited because they examined personal accounts not corporate ones and business people

installment from the european bailout fund a survival story caught on tape. take a look as a car crashes through a store front. caught up in the wreckage is a stroller with a 17-month-old baby boy inside. miraculously, the child is unharmed. no one else is injured in the accident. witnesses say the car veered off the road to avoid hitting another vehicle. a high-speed chase. police say they initially began pursuing the car. because the driver didn't have his lights on and was passing people on the shoulder. they say he continued driving for over an hour, reaching speeds of 80 miles an hour. he eventually came to a stop and was taken into custody without incident. an ohio governor agrees to sign an executive order to crack down on pets. this comes as they released others. sylvia has more about why they

did it. >> six animals, including these leopards are all that remains of terry thompson's pelts. thursday pictures are in sharp contrast to the those at the massacre inflicted on others. including 18 rare bengal tigers. all set free by thompson, prior to his suicide. photos whose release angered local sheriff matt let's. >> we understand there are people angered and frustrated and mad. we are. we're the ones that have been put in in situation. we're the ones that had to deal with this situation. >> this shows just how far they wandered. sheriffs found and shot tigers and bears in at least three locations around farms. here, close to a neighbor. and in this area, just yards from interstate 70. a black bear was shot near a local road. >> reporter: thompson did not leave a suicide note, explaining why she took has life. but there are clues. these tax records indicate that last year, he owed the federal government more than 67,000

dollars. a lien had been placed on his property and his wife had recently left him. >> reporter: cynthia bours, cbs news, zanesville, ohio. >> thompson's wife says they took the animals because no one else would. one surfer nearly loses his life and his board when a shark attacked him. a shark chomped about two feet off of his board. said shark attacked gum just 200 yards from shore. gum's friend, ron clifford, was surfing with him when it happened. >> it looked like piranha, just churning up the water. it just looked like the frenzy. then all of a sudden, i saw a 2- foot bend coming out of the water. and then it lifted my friend up about 10 feet up in the air. >> reporter: gum says he's grateful to be alive and won't be going into the water any time soon. >> i can understand why. scott pelley has a preview

mark is here with the wjz the fan sports report. it's purple friday. >> double dose of purple, and everybody can see it. you are so right. a strong ravens defense could soon get stronger in the secondary. cornerbacks, jimmy smith and chris car, both practiced today. smith is trying to come back from an ankle injury. car is attempting to return from a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined. he is limited but said he's preparing to play monday night in jacksonville. for car, he had never missed a game in his career before the injury. he just says he's happy to be back on the field with a chance now to contribute. >> helmet on with the guys. and catching some balls and stuff. definitely felt a little foreign, you know. but after a couple of minutes and it was fine. so it feels really good to be out there.

now, o'brien watched from the sideline side, while brown made a dazzling debut as the terps' starter. school record, with 162 rushing yards in a loss to clemson. he said there are no hard feelings between him and his fellow qb. >> me and him are still great friends. we talk. and i see him every day. and i was there for him when he was going through all of this. and now he's there for me. i don't think anything has changed in terms of our friendship or our relationship as quarterback is on and off the field. >> brown's takeover has led to talk that danny o'brien might consider talking to another school. brown starts tomorrow afternoon, against florida state in tallahassee. baseball's world series rolls from st. louis to texas, all even after two games, thanks to a cluff come-- clutch comeback. shortstop rangers. incredible dive. keeping the cards from scoring there.
