saying. eyewitness news at 4:00 starts right now. deadly and devastating, a powerful earthquake rocks turkey. >> hundreds are killed and the race is on to rescue any survivors. >> i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. >> digging for survivors. more than two dozen search and rescue teams are scouring the rubble for people trapped. >> reporter: an emergency worker in turkey cradled a rescue toddler after search teams pulled him out of the rubble alive. crews say each survivor gives them hope, a day after a

powerful earthquake killed about 300 people. this man says i was pulled out allove, but my brother is still trap -- alive, but my brother is still trapped under debris. rescuers are still trying to find some trapped beneath buildings. survivors spent a cold night in the streets. they are fighting to get their hands on tents and supplies. authorities are warning people to stay out of damaged homes becausing strong aftershocks are still shaking the region. the devastation is even too much for some rescuers to take. and it is overwhelming relatives who are starting to hold funerals for the dead, wjz eyewitness news. in 1999 two large earthquakes killed more than 20,000 people in the northwestern part of the country. >> wjz is following some breaking news right now. two north carolina schools are in lockdown after a shooting.

the school officials in fayetteville say a 15-year-old student is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the neck. police say the shooting started when the students were outside for lunch. police are scouring the scene for a suspect. students will not be released until the scene is secure. we'll update this story as soon as we get more information. a brutal murder inside the upscale yoga shop. they were accused of killing a co-worker goes to trial. and we have the problems that attorneys are already facing in assembling the journey, monique? >> reporter: the extensive coverage deplorable about 300 potential jurors are being questioned. accused of killing the 30-year- old murray in march of this year. she killed her after being found with stolen merchandise. they believe that she then made up a story involving two masked men. investigators say murray was stabbed and her cool was

crushed -- her school was crushed. >> monique, thank you. wjz is in court and we'll have a live update all new for you at 5:00. the face of terror charge, today, they pleaded not guilty to charges he helped plot the holy war. the 18 can-year-old is accused of help -- the 18-year-old is accused of helping to provide money. she is facing life in prison for another terror plot. now, she faces 15 years in prison and deportation to pakistan. a not-guilty plea in the new york court today by the man charged of plotting to assassinate the saudi arabian ambassador. he admitted his role in the plot to kill the diplomat with bombs while dining in the washington, d.c. restaurant. he is being held in new york city without bail. a boost to the economy today. president obama announces a series of steps to help put money back in the pockets of americans. we'll report for wjz, the

proposals don't need approval from congress. >> reporter: the president left the white house headed for las vegas, where he is bedding a new plan for struggling homeowners will help give the economy a boost. and about 11 million americans are currently under water on their mortgages. meaning that they owe more on their home than what is worth. nevada is one of the hardest hit states. the president is expanding a program that could help up to 1 million homeowners refinance with a much lower interest rate. >> and that would save the average homeowner about $2,000 a year. that could be the difference of being able to stay in the house and not stay in the house. >> reporter: the plan is an executive action, not approving the -- not requiring the approval of congress. the white house is looking for ways to work around lawmakers. the obama administration says that the american people need help now and they can't wait for congress. economists say that the refinancing program is good

news for some borrowers, but it won't have a major effect on the overall economy. >> it will be a modest impact. frankly that will probably be too small for us to notice because of some of the other things that hit us. what went on in europe, that could be relatively small. >> reporter: not every struggling homeowner will qualify. they must have made their last six mortgage payments and have a steady source of income. at the white house, danielle noddingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> they will issue the final pricing information and other details to banks next month, which means homeowners could start submitting new applications for refinancing by september 1. from the south pole to john hopkins hospital. right now, researcher is on her way to baltimore. rescued from the south pole after suffering stroke-like symptoms, undergoing treatment at hopkins, expected to arrive in maryland sometime tonight.

video is now posted online. now, last week, they held a private service for jobs, including thousands of stores so employees could watch it online. jobs died earlier this month of pancreatic cancer. a kentucky man takes a 60- foot plunge and lives to tell the tale, that happens near the red river gorge. the man climbing his front when he lost his footing and fell, taking crews hours to reach the loved ones, saying the injuries are not life threatening, expected to recover. they kill an american diver in the waters of australia, reporting for wjz. >> reporter: the 32-year-old

was diving alone off the boat on saturday near the island here in western australia, when he was fatally attacked by a shark. two of his friends saw the bubbles coming from the water calling for help. police say that their shark, a 10-foot great white, surfaced, and as he writes that friends retrieved his body. >> yes, they floated to the surface, and the shark, they were saying, as they were leaving the area to come back and see that there. >> reporter: the local government said that they hook baits in the water in order to protect the public. >> yes, the action taken was as quick as could be humanly possible. >> reporter: he grew up inpanama city, florida, grew up two months ago from there. he had a passion for being on the water. >> he just loved it over there, saying, you know, it was just amazing. just beautiful, the nature of the water, the fishing, the people. he said that everything was just fantastic. i think that it was just, you

know, a wrong place, a wrong time. there could be a rogue man- eating shark in the water. they are saying it is more likely that three separate sharks are are responsible. a good start for the week on wall street. all the major markets are posting significant gain. s&p 500 back up. let's go to new york right now, she has tonight's cbs money watch outdate. >> reporter: investors were in a buying mood on this merger monday. more than $6 billion worth of acquisitions were announced,

including their $3.8 billion buyout. and the toy maker is buying the company behind thomas the tank engine for $680 million. that is the biggest acquisition for them in more than 10 years. better than expected earnings from caterpillars sent the dow higher. the maker of the construction equipment reported a 44% surge in profits. that's due to strong growth and experts, announcing the global economy to continue to slowly recover. now, fedex says they plan to hire about 20,000 seasonal workers this holiday. the delivery company, they expect to handle more than $17 million packages on december 12. that should be their busiest day of the year. fedex says they are wrapping up their work force as more people do their holiday shopping online. and wal-mart, they are turning up the holiday heat on the competition. it is guaranteeing that customers will get the lowest price no matter when they buy during the season. shoppers that make purchases between november 1 and december 25, then find the identical product elsewhere for less to get a gift card for the price

difference. and that's your money watch. for more, stay with cbsmoneywatch.com. baltimore is joining the country wide push for the healthy eating on national food day. he has more on how the city hopes to encourage the residents to make smarter eating choices. >> reporter: the city is receiving more than $2 million in federal grant money to promote their message of healthy eating. getting americans to eat fish, healthy food is the goal of national food day and baltimore is joining in on the effort. >> having access to healthy diets in combination of reducing things like, well, diabetes, smoking in the end will have people living longer. >> reporter: starting with children. 83 city schools are receiving the $1.7 million federal grant so they could eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day. and there is also a $759,000 federal grant to open up a new grocery store at howard park, now considered a food desert.

that means there are no grocery stores for residents within a mile. >> this is a great example of how the grocery stores could increase the community access to healthy foods as well as job creations. >> reporter: the national food day is a grass roots movement, spearheaded by the center for science and public interest to encourage americans to eat healthy food grown in a sustainable and humane way. and the community farm and reservoir here, they have tried to provide just that. >> growing it in a way that is environmentally friendly. and also socially just. so you know, trying to take care of the people here, either the people that are growing the food and the people that the food is grown for. >> reporter: a major step towards getting good food like this into these young mouths. and that new grocery store is expected to open by next year. andrea fujii, eyewitness news. the food days are being conserved in more than 2,000 events across the country.

all right, taking a live look out here, the sun. >> yeah, that's a nice thought. that was beautiful. >> pretty nice day all things concerned. >> yeah, but we also get this at times too. not too bad overall. okay. e we do have a front coming our way with a couple of showers. here is how it looks right now. there's a little bit of rain right around here. and you'll notice this batch is breaking up, giving their way to clouds. now, this batch right in here, it's breaking up somewhat, but still a chance for the few showers as it passes by this evening. now, we'll switch it over and show you that we have been in and out of the clouds all day

after the morning fog. that's generally going to be the case for the next couple of hours here with the front coming on through. winds are out of the south with everything going on. and that brought our temperatures back to above fair today. still 60 in hagueerstown. but we did manage to get up to a high of 67, above the average. now down to 64. we started off today in the low 40s. the day before in the 30s, so not quite the same level, but we're going back down there again in this forecast. it's going to be because of a second front coming our way. so first up, it's this front right here. that will get out of here by tomorrow. sunshine returns. we're back above average and then the next front will come our way. the next front is going to have more moisture with it. wednesday into thursday. now after it gets out of here on thursday, we will get to much cooler air that returns this way for the second half of the weekend. and those numbers are really going to take a hit. let me show you this later. one more thing to talk about down in the tropics, now we're

talking about chilly air around here. still very great. this is hurricane rena. witness are 70 miles per hour. you can see on the track, it keeps it way down to the south, maybe getting up to a major hurricane here of category three or higher. and the spaghetti miles are all over the place. but at this point, they keep it far out here for the next couple of days at least. something we'll track and keep you updated on. for our forecast, our waters are much quieter around here. they will go back into effect as they pick out of the northwest tomorrow behind this front. a couple of showers this evening. that will get out of here. going down to 48. and then tomorrow, up to 67 degrees. the sunshine out there will be breezy. drier air coming with it. another mild day on wednesday before that front will come on through that knocks all of that warm air out of here for the second half of the week. back into the 60s for our highs. we are getting used to it slowly. >> yeah, the end of october. we need to come to terms with that, right?

defense is trying to tell dr. conrad murray's side of the story. >> reporter: lawyers for dr. conrad murray challenge the expert testimony of the prosecutions final witness. >> are you sure about that? >> i'll have to check the paper, but that's my recollection. >> reporter: doctors claim that dr. murray is responsible for the pop singer's death, but during cross-examination, he was to explain the computer models he used for the analysis. >> you have no information for the exposals. many testified that dr. murray was wreckless.

>> they also heard the slurred voice of jackson, speaking while under the influence of drugs, recording the phone call just weeks before they died. they claim it's proof that he knew his patient had a drug problem and did nothing about it. the defense is expected to counter with more than a dozen witnesses. lawyers for dr. murray will likely admit his treatment of jackson was unorthodoxed and imperfect, but that they will try to make the case that nothing he did or did not do amounts to involuntary manslaughter. in los angeles, karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> most of them consider it unlikely. and crossing the u.s. on the road to recovery for gabrielle giffords touches down in north carolina as she continues to recover from the gunshot wound. mary is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: giffords arrived in asheville tonight for two

weeks of extensive therapy as part of her recovery after getting shot in the head of a mass shooting in january. the 42-year-old has been undergoing speech therapy using it as a part of her rehabilitation. giffords has what doctors call a miraculous recovery since the supermarket shooting, which left six people dead and 12 others wounded. the man charged in the shooting, jared loughner is undergoing health treatment, he will be reelias abuelazam valuated to determine if -- reevaluated to determine if he is competent to stand trial. experts have determined that he suffers from schizophrenia. but police are investigating an apparent murder/suicide inside the lutheran home in rockville. the 80-year-old came to visit his wife, the 74-year-old who lived in the nursing home. he opened fire after walking into her room, killing her, then turning the gun on himself. in the jury's hand, surrounding baltimore prison death is coming to a close.

the family of the slain inmate is suing the state and the correctional officers working the day their son died. claiming the guards failed to prevent strangulation back in 2005 by the fellow inmate, kevin johns. parker's relatives are seeking $21 million in damages. heart disease is linked to an alarming new study. researchers show the tie between hpv virus and the number one killer for women. randall pinkston has tonight's health watch. >> reporter: two years ago, doctors told them that she was infected with the strain of the human virus causing cervical cancer. >> no one wants to find out that they have cancer or are close to having study. >> reporter: it shows a link between hpv and cardiovascular disease. >> women with the cancer- causing strain had the increased risk for heart

disease. >> reporter: researchers found in an association, even for women that didn't have high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes. 22 people with cardiovascular disease do not have risk factors. pinpointing a new car such to the link of hpv will help save lives. >> we have to identify the new risk markers and risk factors, leading us to predict the heart disease before people have their heart attacks. >> reporter: she has a healthy heart, but will pay closer attention from now on. >> now that we know this, it's something for me to be on the lookout. >> she is now hpv free and has regular checkups to stay healthy. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. approximately 20 million americans are affected with hpv. some types of plastic pose a problem for pregnant moms when they go live in the newsroom. >> reporter: well, according to researchers, girls may develop

behavioral problems by the time they turn three. and that will have bpa while pregnant. bpa is a chemical used to make plastics, used to seal hundreds of cans and soda bottles. researchers found the girls in the study were more likely to show signs of hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression. and so far there is no explanation as to why girls are affected and not boys. >> thank you. pregnant women may be avoiding sources of bpa by not eating packaged or canned foods. bears beware, hunting season kicked off early in maryland. the five-day season will run until saturday, stopped early if the 80-bear limit is reached. this year, more than 250 permits were awarded. there is a moratorium for bear hunting, but brought back in 2004. it is a partly sunny mild autumn afternoon. here is a live look as we enjoy the normal conditions for this time of the year. wjz has news weather and

federal lawmakers will be involved on the bipartisan group of the lawmakers, asking owners to appear before the house committee. they tracked the outbreak back to the farm and say that the conditions are partly to be blamed. they have killed a dozen people including a woman from maryland. 100 more had been sickened. libya's transitional

government is just getting on their feet, but one of the first job is to bury moammar gadhafi. the country's government says that they will have the final say as to where he will be laid to rest. the country has been criticized for allowing his body to be remained on public display for last week. they launched an investigation into the former dictator's arrest. today, we're learning more about the suspected case. mary is in the newsroom with what the woman's attorney is saying. >> reporter: the attorneys for linda westton may not fully understand the seriousness of the charges against her. weston and four others are charged with a slew of crimes including kidnapping and false imprisonment. the group kept four mentally challenged adults locked inside a boiler room so they could steal their social security checks. the attorney is now asking for a competency evaluation, declining to discuss the woman's mental health histories, back to you. the investigation is still

growing. they found more than 50 social security cards and returning documents in the apartment of one of the suspects. a serial rapist in texas is apparently targeting members of the sorority. now, police are asking the public for help. investigators released this video of the person of interest in this case. police want to question him about sexual assaults on several women, all members of the sorority. the women were all attacked in their homes and police are telling everyone to be on guard until he is caught. possible new lead in the case of the missing toddler in missouri. police are looking at video that could shed light on the night that lisa irwin disappeared. >> reporter: 3:00 a.m. tuesday october 4, this surveillance video from the bp gas station recorded someone walking away from a wooded area across the street. the gas station is located less than a mile from this home where baby lisa went missing 20 days ago. and they assured that the local attorneys of baby lisa seen

here tonight outside the home said that the new video could help in their investigation. >> i have heard about it. i think that, you know, whenever you are doing these kinds of investigations, you are look the at timelines. you are looking at, well, the areas, things that are unusual. whoever wants to get that bp tape, i applaud them. >> reporter: take a good look at the upper left hand part of your screen just above the curser, there you can see someone walking out of the woods directly across from the bp gas station at brighton. the owner of the gas station declined to go on camera, but told me that he hopes this helps them in their search for more clues. police have been following up on reports of a man seen in the neighborhood that night with a baby. it's not clear if any of these tips will turn up anything substantial. any tip at this point is helpful. >> i've talked to one of the

eyewitnesses that saw the man with the baby. he's a very good man, 41 years married. he happened to be in a spot where he saw something very unusual, went home and told his wife about it because it worried him, but he didn't know that guy. once he did, you know, once his bodies brought it to the attention, he called it in. that's all you can do. >> the parents joined dozens of people outside their home for a prayer service for their daughter. the son of the british media man has another day with the parliament, more questions for them about their role in the phone hacking scandal that brought down the news of the world newspaper. both of them testified that they never knew the extent of the hacking practices. they are accused of illegally hacking into voice mails of celebrities, politicians, crime victims. a day of family fun in ohio says that a dozen of people

land one man in jail. >> reporter: this was the terrifying scene along the road here in perkins township, moments after the wagon on the hayride tumbles over into a corn field. investigators say the guy driving the tractor pulling the wagon, the 47-year-old was drunk. police say that the tracker pulled two trailers and they were going down the street this way when one of them went off the right side of the road overturned. a lot of the people inside the trailer were thrown out of it on to the ground. and 28 were hurt. two riders had to be life flighted. he was arrested, charged with dui, vehicular assault. but it turns out this was not just any fall hayride. more like a country style booze cruise. the wagon ride started here at the mason jar. >> yeah, it was a bar hopping right. they left an establishment here on mason road, traveled out

>> reporter: it's called the love ride because thousands of cyclists will give them heart and time to fight against autism. but this year as they road the i-5 from glendale over towards the lake, hearts were broken when they saw two of their own on the asphalt near the exit. >> as we were riding, tears are just where streaming down my face, hitting my shield. it was pretty emotional. >> reporter: traffic backed up for miles as cyclists scattered about, and too many became drive-by witnesses. >> the freeways are insane out there sometime. people are in a hurry. >> i see the truck veered over there. the biker didn't have a chance. >> reporter: one bike carrying the woman and man, age is unknown. neither survived. >> the coroner is conducting their investigation, and for their investigation, statements will be taken. >> it seems like an older couple on the bike, knowing that they just passed.

here's a live look outside right now, courtesy of the skies. not a bad day at all, bob. the numbers are above normal getting into the upper 60s. the normal high is down 67. pretty close out here. couple showers to the west. really very little consequence. take a quick look at radar. most of the activity, it will probably stay out in the far western mountains as you can see the activity is not too far from this area. most of it is moving off to the east and to the northeast, it is still rather light. we might see a sprinkle out of this. and that is about it. yes, you know, out washington in frederick county, needing to leave in about an hour or two. but these are not heavy showers, most of them are drying up.

67 right now, which is above the normal. dew points are still pleasant. 64%. southwest wind at 6. barometer, you can set your barometer, 30.00 inches. turning that out there as they hit even and watch it rise and fall over the next couple of days. 46 in oakland, 60 in hagerstown. 60 here in the ocean city region and 67 over in washington and baltimore. and so you know, it's a pleasant afternoon, and to get out here in southwestern. later on it will be switching to the west as the weak front will come through the area with a sprinkle. and most of them are just kind of drying up as they hit across the mountains. not a lot of support, in fact, beautiful sunny really nice tuesday afternoon.

and lots of sunshine tomorrow, the government hit in the upper to mid-60s once again for the weak front going through the area of minor consequences. high pressure will be building on in and the next system, more potent, cool front with some shower activity as probably late wednesday night and a good chance on thursday and then behind that, some chilly air is coming in for the end of the week. in fact, one of the models have a low pressure forming off the east coast. how far out, we're determining to see if we'll get the precipitation out of it. right now it is possible that some spots are out here. you could see the rain by saturday, but probably at least be partly cloudy at that time. and northwest winds are picking up during the day tomorrow. gusting up to 29 and a small craft advisory. sunrise, oh, it's late. 7:26. sets at 6:14. and it will be around 63 degrees. they are dropping into the 9th. maybe a brief sprinkle or shower then clearing out. tonight in the mid to upper 40s, low 50s in the city tomorrow. a nice day, very pleasant, a high of 67, which is above our
