why their fight is not over. here's what people are talking about. a prison inmate is killed in front of several correction officers. now the jury awards the family more than $18 millions, and they're speaking exclusively about their emotional fight. wjz is live at the super max downtown. we've got their candid words tonight. >> reporter: this is where the victim was -- the night he was murdered. this is the verdict sheet for what is believed to be the largest award of its kind in a case of this type. the victim's family says it stems from a failure of the state to protect their son. phillip parker's mother has been living a nightmare for six years when her son was strangled to death a. vicious murder on a prison bus bound

for baltimore. his family was awarded $18.5 million from the state of the maryland, finding the system was negligent in protecting phillip. >> and they've made sure that my only -- this is never going to be over for me. sit going to get better? i pray it does. >> the jury found four of the five officers on board that bus were negligent. attorneys for parker's family argued they did not properly retrain his killer, convicted killer kevin jones, and they waited to get medical care for parker. >> i hope somebody will take notice to provide better care, safekeeping and protection to people in the system. >> it's hard to say congratulations and be receptive of that. it's never congratulations for melissa and phil. >> it's bittersweet, but, you know, constantly bit yes. >> it's likely the state will

requested. >> police say yeardley love died at the hands of her ex- boyfriend hughley. now hughley's attorneys are seeking access to love's medical records. the defense claims love died from an irregular heartbeat that occurred from taking adder roll and drinking alcohol. now, last december a judge sealed the records. a hearing is scheduled tomorrow. >> hughley's trial will begin in february. he remains behind bars in virginia. a bus is evacuated and students are hospitalized because of a strong cleaning chemical. the rising star academy this morning, crews say the school was using a floor stripper that gave off strong fumes.

everybody was allowed back inside after crews cleared the building. occupy baltimore protesters are saying they're preparing for a fight, the city rejected a request for permits to remain camped out near the inner harbor. the city is suggesting a compromise to allow them stay there during the day, but only two people would be allowed to sleep there overnight. the protesters say they're preparing for an intervention. now, there's chaos at the occupy demonstration in oakland, california. police dragged protesters out early this morning for refusing to leave a plaza there. officers cleared out tents and used tear gas. the demonstrators claim they will come back. a maryland lawmaker accused of taking bribes in exchange for political favors, defense

attorneys call their client unintelligent but not dishonest. wjz is live at the federal courthouse. we have more on who took the stand today. >> reporter: hours today, prosecutors tried poking a lot of holes in that stupidity defense. they pointed out that he was trusted by his colleagues, had a lot of power and responsibility. >> attorneys for euless session session -- cummings described curry as an honest man, but the prince george's democrat stands accused of accepting nearly a quarter of a million dollars in bribes in exchange for political favors. curry's team is using something called the idiot defense. anthony brown told the jury curry is honest but

disorganized. prosecutors hit back, alluding that his powerful chairmanship is a complicated job requiring a certain level of intelligence. defense attorneys argue curry's work as a paid consultant for shopper's food was perfectly legal, but they acknowledge he failed to disclose on ethics forms. >> the case could wrap up and the jury could get it next week. between now and then, many more politicians could be called to the stand to testify on curry's behalf, including bob urlick. >> thank you, adam. curry faces up to 25 years in prison if he's convicted on all charges. well, monday night football turns into a nightmare for the ravens. wjz has complete coverage of their prime time loss to the jaguars. we've got tonight's emotional fan cam.

head coach john harbaugh just spoke about the disappointing performance last night. mark, it was hard to watch. >> it certainly was, i imagine, for the coach on the sidelines to see it all go down. and the regrouping process has begun. oftentimes in town we hear talk. baltimore complaining it doesn't get enough national recognition. well, after a nationally televised mess on monday night football, the ravens may have wished to be had seen it at all. >> na koa off the hands of rice. the baltimore offense looks awful right now. mike, you're being kind. >> the ravens were historically bad, especially in the 1st half when they gained just 16 yards and had zero 1st downs. now, the ravens did its defense usual stellar job. they did not allow a jacksonville touchdown, but that still wasn't enough because of a ravens essives

55, at the canal. believe it or not, we still have this hurricane in the caribbean. it's not too far from mexico. >> it looks like this is going to become a major hurricane, which means category three or higher. take a look at the latest. this storm is just off the coast of the yucatan. the thing is it's gaining strength. winds over 100 miles per hour. it's either going to make a slight landfall or it's going to skim the yucatan before turning off to the east. it will weaken the storm, eventually losing the strength when it turns off to the east. as far as the computer models go, they make the turn also, but what happens after they make the turn, it's still the big question mark. we're talking about hurricanes still while they're snow falling in the rockies. we'll have the forecast coming up. back inside. people in maryland get a glimpse of a phenomenon. local sky watchers report

an incredible story emerges in the aftermath of turkey's devastating earthquake. rescuers bull a newborn baby out of the rubble alive. it's being called a miracle. >> reporter: this dramatic video captures the moment turkish rescue crews found the smallest amount of life amongst so much death. they pulled a 2-week-old baby girl out of a collapsed apartment building alive. rescuers in turkey cheered as

paramedics you rushed her to an ambulance. this relative says the baby was found nearly 48 hours after the earthquake hit. but her mother was still trapped in a seven-story building, pinned next to a sofa. her grandmother was also buried in the wreckage. as doctors treated her at the hospital, rescuers spent hours digging through the rubble to try to save her mother, and they did, carrying the 25-year- old out on a stretcher. soon after they freed her 70- year-old grandmother too. the rescues came in one of the hardest hit quake zones where hope is fading, but after saving three generations of the same family, crews are not giving up. tina kraus, wjz, eyewitness news. >> the father is still trapped under the building. his condition is unknown.

a woman who witnessed it said he was performing a lewd act as he was staring into her front window. in the wrong place at the wrong time. tonight we're learning about a 15-year-old girl wounded in a school shooting in north carolina. new details on the case. >> reporter: police say the teen was outside during a lunch break when a bullet struck her in the neck. police later arrested two teenagers in connection with the shooting. tonight surveillance video led detectives to the suspect. the pair is inside the school building with a rifle. investigators are not sure of the motive, but they're looking into the possibility that it was gang-related theism do not believe the tenth grader was the intended target. >> the girl is hospitalized in stable condition. the high school reopened today with additional police on campus. the occupation is over in oakland, california as police clear out protesters who have been camped out out at city hall. karen brown reports that anyone

who didn't leave voluntarily left in handcuffs. riot police cleared protesters in the plaza in front of oakland city hall. dozens of antiwall street demonstrators who refused to leave the makeshift camp were arrested in the early morning. >> this is so degrading. >> most were taken peacefully, but officers used tear gas to protect themselves. >> we were being pelted with rocks and bottles and over kitchen utensils. >> reporter: demonstrators began camping out at the plaza two weeks ago, setting up 150 tents. the protesters on the outside and the police on the inside. now, in the beginning city officials supported the demonstration, but then it deteriorated. >> the plaza was -- with

graffiti, litter and sanitation. >> what they're saying are sanitation issues, as far as i'm concerned, all of that was false. >> reporter: with the protesters gone, cleanup crews moved in to remove debris left behind. they will be allowed back, but no one will be permitted to camp out overnight. >> police made about a half dozen arrest while clearing out a smaller protest site not far away. moammar gadhafi's body has been buried in a nondisclosed location. his body has been in a freezer since thursday. he was buried along with one of his sons in an islamic ceremony near dawn. there's calls for investigation into how he was killed. today we know the names of the jurors who acquitted casey anthony of murdering her

10-foot long great white shark. why some shark experts are hoping to learn more about what led to the attack. shark attacks hit a 10-year high. we spoke with an underwater photographer who has experience with sharks and shark bites, and he wants to know what may have led to this latest attack. >> reporter: 32-year-old george wayne wright was diving alone in western australia when he was faye -- fatally attacked by a shark. they saw bubbles coming from the water and called for help. a 10-foot great white surfaced and nudged the dive boat. as wainwright's friends retrieved his body. >> he floated to the surface and the shark was seen to come back into thompson's bay.

>> we try to pride ourselves in collecting enough dat to be able to predict behavior of these animals. >> he's an underwater film maker who has made a career of swimming towards these dangerous sharks. he says shark attacks like this one are all too familiar. i think about this accident of mine. it was provoked. i hope the story that comes out is filled with accurate information. >> it's important to understand shark behavior before determining whether there's a shark problem or if this was just an unfortunate incident. >> sometimes -- i hate to use this, but it's just bad luck. he may have been in the wrong place in the wrong time. >> wainwright moved to australia six months ago to work for a marine company. his family says he had a passion for being on the water. we're told most attacks are provoked, meaning someone

boys. the shots protect against a sexually transmitted virus. susie silver thought it was in her son's best interest to have him vaccinated against the human papillomavirus. >> making sure that he stays safe, making sure the women he's with in the future are safe. >> now a government panel is recommending all 11 and 12-year- old boys receive the vaccination to prevent the virus. the shots are already recommended for girls and young women because hpv increases the risk of cervical cancer. >> it can be transmitted from girls to boys and boys to girls very easily that's led to the new recommendations that the boys also receive the vaccination. >> hpv is a very common infection. most people don't know they have it because the virus doesn't cause symptoms. but the virus can be deadly.

it's responsible for 70% of -- cancer. it can reduce the risk of mouth, throat, anal cancer and it may increase a woman's chance of having a heart attack or stroke. the centers for disease control says the key is for boys and girls to get vaccinated before becoming sexually active. susie silvers says for her the decision was easy. >> why would we want them to get diseases that can be eradicated. >> obviously she was doing what she thought was best for me, and i think it was the right decision. >> the cdc is looking to approve the recommendation. hpv shots were recommended for girls five years ago and only a third have been vaccinated. their son was murdered on a prison bus, and they believe the state should have done more
