this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, october 26th, 2011. good morning, everybody. appreciate you joining us. i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen this morning. in oakland california, over night, more violent confrontations between occupy wall street rioters and police. police used tear gas against hundreds of protesters. last night's clash was the latest in a series of standoffs between demonstrators and police. several were injured in the overnight clashes. earlier in the day, some 100 protesters were arrested. robert lyles of our san francisco station kpix has our report. >> reporter: occupy oakland demonstrators were told the plaza would be a free speech space until 10:00 p.m., so both sides faced off. >> you must leave now! >> reporter: and within minutes, the sound of explosions, tear gas canisters rocketed into the crowd of at least 800. >> protesters were not being violent. they provoked protesters. >> she shot tear gas into the

crowd. flash bangs. women, children, grandmothers, grandfathers, they are all standing in the same spot. >> it was like ridiculous. there was no need to do it. they weren't doing nothing but talking. >> reporter: one tear gas canister appeared to slam into the schedule of one demonstrator. his friend carried him away. the riot started peacefully just before rush hour. with a demand to release some 70 demonstrators arrested during the raid on the plaza. soon the demonstrators were on the move, snaking through the streets of downtown oakland. but at eighth and washington, the peace was prone. police fired grenades and rubber bullets at demonstrators who pushed back demanding the release of two men detained while marching. the confrontation drew so intense, police used clubs to turn the demonstrators back. at this hour, there have been 102 arrests. police tell us two officers have been injured.

in oakland, i'm robert lyles, for cbs news. meanwhile, we go to atlanta now. overnight, police remove occupy wall street protesters from a local park. protesters who set up in tents were told to leave woodruff park. more than 50 demonstrators protesting corporate greed were arrested. there was no violence. most americans have heard something about the occupy wall street movement. according to a new cbs news/"the new york times" poll, 43% say they agree with the movement's views, 27% disagree. a majority of americans say neither the president or republicans in congress have a clear plan for creating jobs. only 38% say the president has a clear idea for creating jobs. just 20% say the same about republicans in congress. job creation and ideas about fixing the ailing economy dominate the campaign season. today, the president unveils his plan to help those with student loans lower their payments. meanwhile, texas governor rick perry is now on board with instituting a flat income tax. we go to susan mcginnis in

washington with more on all of this. susan, good morning to you. >> hi. good morning, terrell. >> reporter: the president is in denver today where he will make than announcement of help to college graduates through another executive order. meanwhile, his gop challengers are just trying to stay in the spotlight. >> hello, colorado! >> reporter: president obama hit the fund-raising circuit in denver, trying to drum up support for his campaign. >> if you thought the last election was important, then wait until you get a load of this election. >> reporter: it was one of six fund-raisers scheduled during his three-day western swing. the president wraps up the trip today at the university of colorado where he'll announce another executive order, this one aimed at helping millions of college graduates pay back their student loans. in california tuesday, he stopped at "the tonight show" with jay leno and admitted he is not paying much attention to the gop field. >> i'm going to wait until everybody is voted off the island. >> really? >> reporter: with the iowa caucuses just ten weeks away,

gop candidates are doing everything they can to stay in the race and energize their campaigns. >> as president, i'll create at least 2.5 million new jobs. >> reporter: rick perry is launching this 30-second spot in iowa today. his campaign's first tv ad. it comes just a day after the texas governor unveiled an economic plan that includes a flat income tax, a lower corporate tax rate, and the option of private social security accounts. >> it reorders the way they do business in washington. >> reporter: but according to a new cbs news/"the new york times" poll, perry has a lot of ground to make up. the onetime front-runner is now in fifth place, behind herman cain who surged to the top with a four-point lead over mitt romney. terrell? >> a long way to go there, susan. susan mcginnis in washington for us this morning, thank you. >> a pleasure. the occupy wall street protests might have a reason for their anger.

a new report from the congressional budget office says incomes of the wealthiest 1% of americans nearly tripled between 1979 and 2007. middle class incomes, about 60% of the population, grew 40%. and the 20% at the bottom of the economic scale saw income growth of only about 18%. also a cbs news/"the new york times" poll found most americans believe the economy is getting worse. norah o'donnell sat down with treasure secretary timothy geithner yesterday and asked if americans are right to feel that way. >> it's still very tough out there. the people are very frustrated and still hurting a lot. >> reporter: but is it getting worse? >> the economy as a whole? the economy is just not growing fast enough. >> reporter: are you convinced we have hit rock bottom? could there be a second recession? >> i think the strength of the economy right now depends on two things. it depends on how successful europe is in resolving their financial chronic and people in and it depends on the people in

washington. if congress does not act on these proposals in the president's jobs act, taxes will go up for most americans and most businesses and growth be weaker and more americans out of work longer. >> reporter: did the president take his eye off the ball on jobs? >> absolutely not. he was relentlessly focusing on it. he was doing things that were deeply difficult politically for him. >> reporter: but people say he was focused on health care, not on jobs in the economy. >> we were passing a recovery act that made huge investments of getting americans back to work' help restart economic growth. he was rescuing and the restructuring the automotive industry. he was fixing a terribly damaged and broken financial system and no country can grow without a financial system. those were all about jobs and about trying to protect the economy from a devastating crisis. >> geithner urged republicans to join democrats in helping the economy to improve. as night ger sa-- geithner says

the economy hinges on what happens in europe. 600 billion dollar rescue package to end the debt crisis in the euro zone. the plan calls no taxpayer money to be used in that bailout. on the cbs "moneywatch" this morning, it was a mixed day for most stocks in asia. traders waited to see what happened in europe. nikkei lost .02%. hang seng was higher by over 1.5%. stocks dropped on wall street. the dow sank 207 points. the nasdaq was down 61. a prominent former goldman sachs board member is expected to surrender to federal authorities in new york today. rajat gupta is accused of providing information that allowed a convicted former billionaire hedge fund manager earn $1 million. there is some hope in the housing market. home prices rose slightly in august for the fifth straight month. the biggest price cities were in washington, chicago, and detroit. home prices fell the most in atlanta and los angeles. if you're the parent of a

college kid, this is not news to you. cost of college is going up. a report published by the college board shows an average instate tuition and fees of four-year public colleges rose an additional $631 this year. that is 8.3%, compared to a year ago. nationally, the cost of a full credit loan is past $8,000, that is a an all-time high. consumer reports are out with this year's auto reliability scores. the three brands most likely to be reliable. the three least reliable. audi, porsche and jaguar. hurricane rina is bearing down on mexico's popular coast. latest satellite picture shows the storm centered about 250 miles southeast of cozumel. it's packing winds of 110 miles per hour. tourists and residents are urged to evacuate. rina is expected to strengthen to a powerful category 3 storm. forecasters say it should roll over cozumel tonight and then move up the coast to cancun.

mr. obama said tuesday, it sends a strong message to dictators that people long to be free. meanwhile, there are questions this morning about the way libyan rebels are dealing with gadhafi's supporters. allen pizzey reports. >> reporter: whether rebel fighters executed gadhafi is still under investigation. so far, the new libyan government has shown little interest in getting to the bottom of the matter. more than 300 bodies, some with their hands tied behind their back, were collected from a cross search and buried in a mass grave. libyan officials have been slow to confront accusations of atrocities by their fighters despite repeated calls for them to do so. there are no names in this graveyard, only numbers. 572 so far and still counting, that's because the graves contain the bodies of alleged mercenaries. most of them were killed in the fighting, but some local officials freely admit were summarily executed. the governor of this prison in misrata thinks that amounted to justice. there was no mercy for

an early season snowstorm is bringing a for the or more of snow to colorado. as it moves toward the southern plains, colder than normal air is heading no midwest. scattered showers are lining up from oklahoma to new england. here is another look at this morning's top stories. a violent confrontation overnight in oakland, california. police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of occupy wall street protesters. at least five demonstrators were arrested and several other injured. it was the fifth time over the course of several hours that police were forced to break up the crowd. and president obama wraps up his three-day western trip in colorado today. he'll announce plans to help college grads consolidate their loans and lower their payments. the trial in the doctor charged in the death of superstar michael jackson continues morning. lawyers for dr. conrad murray are expected to bring in witnesses who will talk about how good a doctor he is. yesterday, michael jackson's nurse took the stand. a tearful cherilyn lee
