without power, two days after the unusual fall snowstorm. >> the way it's going to look, it will be a couple of weeks before we are caught up to all of this stuff. >> there were some close calls. >> all of a sudden, there was a noise and the house shook. >> reporter: it shook from these two trees that fell on the ecrich home. >> must have been pretty scary, huh? >> no. the house went like this. >> reporter: in many neighborhoods here in new jersey, the snow from the season caused more damage than hurricane irene. this will cause major repairs after a 100-foot tree fell on top of it. >> we have trees down all across the northern part of the state that have taken wires down, both supply waters -- wires, transmission lines and lines to homes. >> reporter: it's the same storm in massachusetts and connecticut, where crews are trying to repair sagging or severed power lines. >> it looks kind of what i think a war zone would look like.

>> hundreds of thousands of residents on the east coast may not get their power back until the end of the week. in upper saddle, new jersey, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> first warning weather coverage continues now with meteorologist bernadetteed woos -- bernadette woods who has a closer look at the storm that tore up the east coast. >> hello there, kai. this is amazing. a lot of people were shoveling before they were raking. and they had their first snow before their first freeze. here's when the storm came in at the height of it. a lot, changed over to snow. it was during this time frame that it happened. you can see the bright colors. that's when it came down to the southeast. it did mix a little farther north and west. but you don't have to go that far to the north and west, where you saw most of the snowfall accumulations. this is what it left behind. not that far away from the city, there was a coating in the area. and you see, it jumps to that 3-

to 6-inch mark, through central parts of western maryland. and see how that swath goes up to the northeast and actually intensifies to a 12-plus inch area around new england and upstate new york. so yes, this is impressive storm for any time of year, let alone october. we'll have our forecast shortly for all of those trick or treaters. a popular bar is in ruins today. fire investigators are sifting through the cinders at the mount washington tavern now. adam may is trying to explain what sparked the two-alarm fire. >> firefighters remained here on the scene. putting out hot spots and actually inside the building, inspecting the damage and looking for the cause. you can see here from the front of the building, the devastation here is widespread. and it's going to take quite sometime to rebuild. >> reporter: flames lit up the early morning skies in mount washington, when a two-alarm fire broke out at the tavern. >> initially, we were concerned

about the structure. >> the 30-year-old's restaurant, a fixture in mount washington village. the interior, decorated with local arts and antiques, such as antiques. but for patrons, it's more than a historic landmark. >> you went there. last year, three and my friends, actually, we were out of town. we spent christmas there together. so you know, hopefully it will rebuild. >> in fact, when we bought our house, the day we signed on it, my husband and i came here for dinner, in between the signing signinga as a celebration. because it's an icon. >> reporter: on the tavern, owners write, we may be down but we are certainly not out. the fire has taken the tavern for now, but we look forward to rebuilding and being better than ever observe. >> reporter: as of right now, investigators are trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the investigation. luckily, no one was hurt, while fighting this blaze. in mount washington, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> and wjz speaks to the tavern

former governor robert ehrlich, congressman elijah cummings and lieutenant governor anthony brown have testified for currie. >> senator currie will not testify on his own behalf. presidential candidate herman cain is being forced to address claims that he sexually harassed twoem with. -- two women. >> reporter: republican front runner herman cain denied allegations he engaged in improper behavior with two former employees. >> in all of my over 40 years' business experience, running businesses and corporations, i have never sexually harassed anyone. >> reporter: anonymous sources told politico, the inappropriate conduct happened in the 1990s, when cain was the head of the national restaurant

association. the candidate insists, it turned up no evidence to support the two women's claims. >> i was falsely accused of sexual harassment. >> reporter: cain called this a witch hunt. as they promote his 999 tax plan. >> yes. it's a bold idea and a bold plan. but america can't wait. >> reporter: cain is coming under more scrutiny now that he's ahead in the polls. a new poll put him just ahead of mitt romney in iowa. >> reporter: cain poked fun at gop strategists who predicted he would fail. >> this flavor of the week is still flavor of the month, and it still tastes good. >> reporter: cain is eager to move past the allegations and put the focus back on his 9-9-9 plan, something that helped propel him to the front of the pack.

a national restaurant association official will not comment on the allegation, saying they are personnel issues that allegedly, end quote, took place nearly 15 years ago. well, 50 is open now in easton after a gas station fire. these are still pictures taken by talbot county emergency responders. the shell station burst into flames. firefightersers from talbot, dorchester and caroline counties helped extinguish the flames. no one was hurt. the cause is under investigation. eight stories in the air. today, three workers are back on solid ground. the men dangled by harnesses, while the montgomery county fire department conducted the high rescue. maryland occupational safety and health is investigating the incident. in central maryland now, it's a more pleasant afternoon. here's a live look outside, partly cloudy skies.

london's phone hacking scandal grows after it is revealed several officers investigating a murder may have had their phones hacked. police said there is evidence that officers investigating the 2002 murder of millie dowler were targeted. the force heavily criticized after saying it knew dowler's phone had been hacked but failed to act. many are getting into the hidden fee business. guests are getting charged for everything from early access to a pool and gyms. the fees are adding up. u.s. hotels are bringing on -- are on track to bring in a record $1.8 billion in fees this year. that's up 80% from a decade ago. trick-or-treating can give your kids more than a stomachache, especially if they have allergies. >> reporter: jasmine wright has sensitive skin.

trick-or-treating weather. not everyone is benefiting from the beautiful weather. but for most of maryland, we're continuing okay. see the front batch of this continues to fizzle out. also, all of this should hold off in the eastern shore until after trick-or-treating. let's start it out with sunshine and fog out there. highs between the two storms approaching. and while that's happening, wends have turned to the east. but the other big factor in the trick or treat temperatures, 56 in d.c. a little cooler. 50s at the ocean. and we will drop when the sun goes down. but not to the level of last night. you'll need the jacket, but not all that extreme. 30 was our morning low. we'll be a little above that.

richmond police gave "occupy" protestors, about 45 minutes to pack up tents before arresting the handful who refused to leave. this was inspired by the anti- wall stit street protest. that all changed when police rolled in at 1:00 a.m., clearing strangers from the park. there was no violence, but some vow to come back. city officials say once the cloo cleanup is completed, the park will be roped off. >> they plan to rally later tonight. the taliban in afghanistan unleashes deadly attacks against foreigners. the latest came this morning. rita nissan in london reports for wjz on the growing violence. >> reporter: rubble filled the streets after two attacks killed five people. first, an insurgent drove a pickup truck, loaded with explosives into a checkpoint.

this eyewitness says, i was in my house when a huge explosion broke my windows and woke up my children. then three insurgents took control. touching one gun battle with afghan and nato forces. the fight lasted more than 2 hours before the attacker was killed. this was the taliban's second major assault on foreigners in three days. on saturday, a suicide bomber struck a convoy, killing 17 people, including a dozen americans. the brazen attack in the middle of the day came just hours after afghan and western officials met to discuss security handovers. it was the deadliest single ground attack against the coalition since the 10-year-old war began. with latest attacks, insurgents are sending the message they're still a force to be wreckonned with. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness

news. >> they are slowly handing over security to afghan forces. and plans to completely withdraw from the country by the end of 2014. a florida woman whose husband died in the anthrax mailings will receive $50 million from the government. marla sued, saying poor research led to the attacks. an fbi conclusion that he mailed it. ivins committed suicide in 2008 before he was ever charged. a check into what caused a truck to crash. fire official says no one was in the house at the time. but the driver was -- driver of the truck was taken with injuries. new york members of congress are calling for an investigation into what -- whether or not an airline company covered up.

>> well, denise, it was back in february 2009, when the flight crashed, killing all 49 people on board and a man on the ground. now, a lawyer of four families suing over the crash says e- mails show colgan managers doubted captain marvin renlow's ability to fly. after an investigation, the national transportation safety board concluded the cause was crash was pilot error. eric holder says the failure to release those e-mails is possibly criminal. >> had only flown just over 3,000 hours before the crash. the government is now investigating a jet blue flight that left travelers stranded for less than three hours. they were to land in harford, new york. once they landed, more than 100 passengers were left on board the plane without food, water or functioning bathrooms, for

rescue crews pull three more bodies. a violent explosion rocked the facility, killing six people and trapping seven others. rescue crews tried to reach them. but damage from the blast caused them to postpone their search. the cause is still under investigation. a phoenix-based flight attendant is killed during a layover in mexico city. colleagues found nick aronson at his room of the hilton hotel. officials don't think there was a forced entry at the hotel. new testimony in the case of the so-called home invasion killer. kai is in the newsroom with more. kai? >> denise, carly labotee claims her nephew doesn't deserve the

death penalty. joshua was convicted of killing a connecticut woman and her two daughters. his aunt claims he deserves another chance. she says her nephew should be sentenced to life in prison because she's been rejected since birth and has a daughter she loves. she said her son visited more than 900 adult porn sites, during the days leading up to the attack. >> the 9-year-old daughter may be called to take the stand. >> the murder case that terrified los angeles for more than two decades just got bigger. as serene branson reports, six more murders are linked to the alleged grim sleeper. >> reporter: he's been dubbed the longest-running serial killer, west of the mississippi. now, lonnie franklin, jr.'s list may be growing. detectives have linked him to six more slayings after a viewing a cold case. and a cache of photos found inside of a south l.a.

home. >> he has been arrested. the district attorney's office has been filing multiple counts. >> reporter: accused of molesting multiple women. investigators say he killed from 1985 to 1998. and again from 2002 to 2007. the gap gave him the name grim sleeper. although police believe he never really stopped. >> lonnie franklin's reign of terror, in the city of los angeles was spent well over two decades, culminating with almost a dozen murder victims, certainly needs to be investigated further. and we certainly do not believe that we are so lucky or sogood as to know all of his victims. >> reporter: at the time, detectives said they would be working to tie the 59-year-old mechanic to unsolved crimes. according to this, dna has linked them to three murders. circumstantial evidence. items found at his home and a phone call are being used to link the other three. franklin's attorney told us

tonight, she's skeptical of the other cases. from day 1, we heard that the lapd would be investigating every unsolved mystery. no bodies were found in three of the cases. this is an attempt to taint the jury pool and make him look guilty of every unsolved crime in the city. >> franklin has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of murder. in california, a store owner is behind bars, charged with overcharging for the price of a drink. one of the customers allegedly purned -- punched the owner. that's when he opened fire, shooting one in the chest. the other tried to run bur the owner shot him before he could escape. bastrop county, texas goes up in flames. now, more than two months later, we get a rare look inside the fire moment afers it started. take a look as this county sheriff tries to respond to a call for help. the fire destroyed at least 1500 homes and blackened more

here's a live look outside right now. it's nice and dry compared to the weekend. it's going to be nice for trick- or-treating, i hope. >> it was a lot worse, obviously west of the city. east of 95. basically, with just a cold rain with wet snowflakes. as you saw, some areas, not far from baltimore at all, had 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 1/2 inches in sabillasville. that's pretty high, northern frederick county. only talking like 40, 45 miles north/northwest of the region.
