an overseas flight. the pilot is hailed a hero. >> how he manages to land the flight in the u.s. >> here's what people are talking about. >> he did everything right. passengers panic when a polish pilot is forced to land a jumbo jet. that originated in new jersey, without landing gear. manuel gallegus reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: the polish airlines, boeing 7 sketch, carrying 222 apparentlies, skidded on its belly down a runway in war saw, after the plane's landing gear failed. the pilot circled in the sky for about an hour, dumping

fuel, trying to fix the landing gear. the airline said the plane's central hydraulic system failed, the pilots reported the failure about half hour from when the plane took off from newark, new jersey. they laid down a special fire- retardant flame. the boeing 767 slid to a halt. crews doused it with water and foam. no passengers were injured. according to an airport spokesman, they were taken to a terminal, where psychologists were waiting to counsel them. in new york, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> terror scare. an explosion inside a baggage area inside an airport. vic has more on what forced the evacuation at o'hare. >> united airlines baggage

handler entered it in fair condition. a battery inside exploded, causing it to burst open. chicago fire says the incident appears to be accidental. the owner of the bag is being inspected by law enforcement officials. its final destination was chicago o'hare. >> and united spokesperson says flights were not affected, but there may be delays, retrieving bags. >> a very rough day on wall street. stocks drop at the opening bell over ongoing concerns with the greek economy. as of moments ago the dow is down nearly 300 points. s&p and nasdaq are also down big. we'll have the latest coming up in money watch. major decision. dr. conrad murray says he will not take the stand in his own defense. karen brown reports for we'll from los angeles with the latest on the michael jackson manslaughter trial. >> dr. conrad murray will not take the witness stand in his

own defense. his decision comes after weeks of speculation and as his defense team rested its case. >> subject to proceeding exhibits, we will rest. >> reporter: they analyzed charlottes and models, intending to explain how michael jackson died. >> these models are all subject to variability. >> white says jackson likely injected himself with the powerful dose of propofol. but the state's top expert blames dr. conrad murray, who was jackson's personal physician. >> reporter: the prosecution said dr. murray gave michael jackson too much propofol in an iv drip and left him unattended. now, jury has two different stories. they'll have to decide who to believe. >> reporter: they said he needed to justify why he never

told authorities he had given michael jackson propofol. >> is that a detail you overlooked? >> that was obviously overlooked. >> not obviously, right? it could also be a lie. correct? that's another option? >> if you say so, yeah. >> this witness was virtually destroyed by the prosecution. not only was he a mixed bag, but he might have hurt the defense's case more than helped. >> reporter: michael jackson was rehearsing for a series of comeback concerts when he died in 2009 at the age of 50. in los angeles, karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> court will resume thursday. a member of the mayor's security detail is recovering today after a car accident. the city officer was in an unmarked suv on the jfx near gilford avenue. he was on his way back to city hall, when he was struck by another vehicle. the mayor was not in the suv at the time. both were taken to shock trauma with injuries. school scare.

two students are taken to shock trauma after a hazmat spill. alex demetrick has more. >> two students found a bottle of the storage unit, opened it up and the fumes were so strong, they dropped it. sky eye chopper 13 was over the baltimore freedom academy on east lombard street. all students and faculty were evacuated from the three-story building. the city department says the bottle contained formaldehyde. both students were hospitalized as a precaution. and doctors checked out their eyes. the charter school with 600 students, grades 6 through 12, was evacuated for a moment. fire spill. all coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. tolls are going up in maryland transportation facilities statewide. derek valcourt is at the fort mchenry tunnel to crunch the numbers. >> this is one of two toll increases over the next few years, affecting state highways, bridges and tunnels.

>> reporter: in the first phase of toll hikes starting today, the fort mchenry, and harbor tunnel and key bridge goes up from $2 to $3. the commuter ez pass discount goes up as well. jumps from $2.50 to $4 cash at the other bridge, and ez pass stays the same until july 19th. and on i-95 and hadeem bridge, the toll goes up. special exemptions are made for the hadeem bridge only. >> it's going to make it rougher for folks like myself who have to use the bridges and tunnels all the time. >> especially with gas prices on the rise again. it's really rough. >> reporter: the state needs $225 million to stay current on its debt service to keep maryland moving. eastern shore senator e.j.

pipkin. >> shame on this board. >> reporter: they will raise the tolls to $6 until 2013. >> reporter: the new tolls are expected to generate $90 million for maryland in the first year. >> we have reaction from drivers who paid the new tolls today, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. a fiery crash ties up traffic for hours. sky eye chopper 13 is over the harrisburg expressway, near the parkton exit. a car was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer. the car caught fire in the middle lane of traffic. the road was closed, while state police investigated that crash and clooned -- cleaned up the scene. the month of november cleans up on such a great note outside. it is mild and sunny outside. a few degrees warmer than yesterday. we'll talk to kristy in just a second. but meteorologist bernadette woods is here with updated numbers from first warning weather. a couple of morning showers. but let's take a look at first warning doppler radar. that is gone.

and what a gorgeous afternoon we've had. we sit just around 60 degrees now. and i want to show you an overall picture of temperatures across the state. everyone nice and mild this afternoon. now, these are a couple of degrees below average. but they're up to where we have been over the weekend. 56 degrees in ocean city. 50 in elkton. otherwise, close to 50 all through the 95 corridor. >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. not a good start at all for northbound 95. we have an accident at the harbor tunnel throughway. it's blocking the two left-hand lanes. the delay is back to 175. and will take at least 30 minutes to get through. 70 westbound, heavy to marriottsville road. and we have delays on the west side inner loop from 70 to security. about 15 minutes to get through. over on the north side inner loop, about a 10-minute drive in that direction from the jones falls expressway to dulaney valley road. and a couple of accidents if you're in the harford county

a romanian soccer fan is charged with breaking a player's cheek in bucharest. check this out. after he is hit in the face, his teammates knock the guy to the ground and started beating him. he was whisked away by security. the player remains sidelined with a broken cheekbone and will be sidelined for 45 days. the referee called the game. caused by an improperly positioned track switch. the report went on to say that the track manager didn't override the switch. austin wonnenberg died in the accident. and his mother is suing disney. disney said they put new safety procedures in place since the accident. a new study shows even low amounts of alcohol can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer.

randall pinkston reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: tracy richards enjoys an occasional drink. >> probably one to two, maybe three on a friday night. >> reporter: but a new study shows even low levels of alcohol could have consequences. research in the journal medical association shows women who drink small amounts of alcohol, 3 to 6 a week, increase their risk of breast cancer by 15%. researchers also found heavy drinkers, women who had at least two drinks a day, increased their risk by 51%, compared to women who never drink. >> reporter: it's most important what someone does over a long period of time, not what she just does over the past week or past month. >> reporter: doctors aren't quite sure what the connection is between alcohol and breast cancer. but they think it has something to do with how alcohol affects estrogen levels in the body. >> alcohol may also change the

sensitivity of tissues to estrogen. >> reporter: the study's author says it's up to the individual to weigh the risks. a woman with a history of breast cancer may want to cut down on her drinking. but a woman with heart problems may want to continue having a glass of wine for the cardiovascular benefits. richardson said she will do her best. >> when i was in my 20s, it wouldn't have mattered to me. but being older and wiser, and a family history, it matters to me. >> family history? >> yes. my grandmother. >> reporter: but researchers say there is always time to cut back and lower your risk. >> the type of alcohol, beer, wine or liquor, did not make a difference in the study. as we told you earlier, to bees were down today, amid worries. about the economy in greece. nasdaq down 77. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update.

>> reporter: stocks plunged in the u.s. and around the world on fears that europe's recently- announced debt deal is in danger of falling apart. greece surprised investors, calling for a referendum on the country's latest package. a no vote could result in a devastating debt default in greece. could possibly force greece out of the european union. automakers had a good october. general motors said sales were up 2%. ford sales rose 6%. and chrysler had its best gain in four years. investors worry that a collapse could trigger an economic crisis that would derail the slow but steady growth here in the u.s. and hurt car sales. macy's is giving its flagship stores a makeover. macy's will spend $400 million and overhaul. the renovation will begin next

yeah. >> okay. back to the weather. we did have showers this morning. they moved across southern parts of the state. even sprinkles across the city. but awe -- all of that got here. and a breeze out of the northeast has kept temperatures somewhat down. but still, we're sitting at 60 degrees this afternoon. and when you combine that with a lot of sunshine. not too shabby outside. a little cooler in the mountains. in the 50s. and we did manage a high of 61 so far. the average of 62. look at ta. very close for our -- that. very close for our averages. and look how it's going to be the next couple of days, very close to our averages. not a whole lot going on in our weather department. we got rid of that little storm. that's not going to be much of a storm for us either. and then there's a third one that we're talking about. this is how it all comes together. first off, tonight, clear skies. temperatures are going to drop. it's going to be a chilly one. but tomorrow, with those skies, temperatures start to build back up again. and again, close to average. then we see the storm to the northwest. it comes our way on thursday.

parameters were from 12 years ago is a little difficult. >> reporter: so far, cain's fundraising has not been hurt. his chief of staff said he raised a quarter million dollars online in one day. >> reporter: danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> and mitt romney, who trails cain in the poll, was also a no- show at the event. a tugboat crashes and the pilot is headed to prison. >> reporter: today, matthew dublin was sentenced to one year and one day behind bars. devlin admitted to talking on a phone as he steered a huge bar on a tour boat, sending 35 people into the river. two students drowned. lawyers say devlin say he was consumed by a family emergency on the day of the crash. but prosecutors say he should have had another captain take the wheel.

devlin spoke at his trial for the first time, saying he sees bodies in the water every day. >> families of the victims have filed suit. the government investigation into a jet blue flight that left passengers on a tarmac for more than seven hours. as peter greenberg reports for wjz, the passengers bill of rights may not help these passengers. >> it's ridiculous. this airport is just leaving us here and not doing anything about it. >> reporter: jet blue's 5 -- 504 was among those forced to land at hartfield's bradley airport overnight. >> is there any way you can get a tug and a tow bar out here to us and get us towed somewhere, to a gate or something? >> reporter: 129 passengers were stuck on the tarmac for more than seven hours, without water and working rest rooms. >> they're filled. totally filled. nobody can go in them anywhere. you just have to hold it. >> i have a problem here on the

airplane. >> reporter: jimmy brown was a passenger on jet blue flight 504. >> there was almost a fight behind us, in front of us, people were just yelling, just bring the stairs, let us get off the plane. >> jet blue ceo rob marrister apologized. >> we know we let some of you down. for that, we are truly sorry. >> reporter: the passenger bill of rights says if passengers are kept on a plane for more than three hours, they can be fined $30,000. but the bill excludes airports from any responsibility. >> when they recognized that they, too, were starting to get overloaded, they should have said, this is going to be a situation where we cannot accommodate all the aircraft and you need to divert somewhere else. >> our passengers and our crews need these situations to be able to be resolved much quicker than this. >> reporter: cbs news, aviation

expert, pilot chesley sullenberger believes everybody needs to work together. >> the airlines, the air traffic controllers, the airports, all have to have action plans in place that they can quickly turn to, in adverse weather events to get stairs to buses and airplanes that cannot make it to gates. >> reporter: in the 16 months prior to when the 3-hour delay rule was adopted by the faa, there were more than 900 incidents reported. but in that same length of time, after the rule was added, the numbers dropped to 54. one of five men suspected in the gang rape of a baltimore girl is behind bars. police were able to track down lucky christopher crosby, jr., using his gps monitoring ankelt bracelet. the girl was -- ankle bracelet. the girl was walking when she was attacked. wjz has more on this and the gps monitoring system coming up at 5:00. a sneeze causes a deadly crash in salisbury. maryland state police say a

passenger in a van died after the driver suffered a sneezing attack, lost control and hit a tree. the driver suffered six broken ribs and remains hospitalized. police have charged him with reckless and negligent driving. secretary of state hillary clinton is mourning the loss of her mother. dorothy howl rodham die -- howell rodham died last night. clinton canceled plans and stayed with her mother last night, and was with her when she died. her mother was 92 years old. doctors say millions of children with hyperactivity do not raise their risk of heart problems. >> reporter: this latest study comes on the heels of concerns that adhd medications increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events in children. but in this study, researchers looked at health records of more than 1 million children and found that heart attacks,

strokes and death, were no more common on those on adhd medicine than nonusers. this was the largest safety review ever done on adhd drugs. >> more than 2.7 million children are prescribed adhd drugs in the u.s. every year. a baby shampoo causes cancer-causing chemicals. it says the shampoo causes two chemicals. in response, johnson & johnson says formaldehyde releasing preservatives are safe and improving regulators. but that it is gradually phasing them out of its products. nascar is recovering after a plane crash. rick hendrick who owns hendrick motor sports, suffered broken bones while a teen ran off in florida. also on board were two pilots and hendrick's wife, who also suffered minor cuts and bruises. according to a report, the team

a disturbing crime in new york leaves two boys in jail and a woman fighting for her

life. police say the two 12-year-olds push a shopping cart off the fourth floor of a parking garage. she's now in critical condition. police say it's unclear if the boys were actually aiming at the person they hit. they are charged with juvenile felony assault. a taser incident at a gold's gym. a gym member became enraged, attacking several people inside the gym, as well as responding police officers. they say they tazed the man several times. he later went into cardiac arrest and died. two others inside the gym received minor injuries. two -- a huge explosion at a plant in kansas. >> reporter: callers weren't sure what happened. they just heard a deafening blast and knew people needed help. >> 911, where is your emergency? >> hurry! oh, my god. >> okay. well, get everybody there. >> we'll get them there. >> hurry.

hurry. oh, my god. it blew up. >> that woman wasn't the only one who saw the fireball that lit the sky at the grain elevator. police say they received more than 300 calls. the blast killed four employees and two grain inspectors. the cause of the explosion still under investigation. investigators say it's possible that dust from milled grain ignited. back to you, denise. >> thank you very much, mary. two more workers remain in intensive care with serious burns. a sanctuary for animals goes up in flames, as a popular new jersey zoo burns to the ground. now, they are trying to figure out what happened. >> workers say about 300 animals, including hyenas and giraffes, call the animal kingdom home. sunday night's fire in the springfield township gutted the main building where puppies, cats and exotic animals are sold and indoor zoo items are displayed. >> we lost two of our own house dogs that grew up here. we lost one puppy and four cats. >> reporter: and the bird's

owner, burton simp said he lost two dogs and a giraffe. >> the baby, the one that they were actually able to get out and bring out. >> she died this morning. >> reporter: as investigators from state police and the countery and -- county and state fire markets look for a cause, animal handlers spent the afternoon, trying to corral the seven remaining giraffes for temporary shelter at six flags great adventure. it was no easy task. 25 puppies were rescued and being sold at cost. roberta huma bought a cocker spaniel mix. >> we heard some of the puppies were saved. and we came over to save at least one. >> reporter: zip, who lost his wife in april when their home burned down. he believes the freezer started that fire. he believes the furnace for the giraffes may have started this one. >> you see the heavy equipment behind me. we hope to get that in tomorrow, hoping to proceed to

bal yevo woke up to the horror that the 12-year-old daughter she raised from birth, irenna, was not her own. then came the realization, her real daughter, anna, had been raised by another family. it came to light on a russian tv show. her husband wanted a divorce and refused to pay child support, saying irenea looked nothing like him. a dna test proved not only wasn't the girl his, but she wasn't hers either. they claim the matern itward mixed up -- maternity ward mixed up tags. while irenea was raised by a christian family, anna was raised by muslim. they got a settlement. irenea's biological father says some of the money may be used to buy a house so the families can live under one roof.
