is wjz. maryland's news station. >> the hitman sentenced. a convicted killer learns his fate. >> will walter bishop pay for his crimes with his life? >> hello again, am don scott. >> i am jessica kartalija. >> we begin with breaking news, walter bishop was given his sentence for being part of a murder-for-hire plot. wjz and weijia jiang are live outside the courthouse. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, don, good afternoon to everyone. that is absolutely the best case scenario for walter bishop , jr. you will remember his life was on the line, he was eligible for the death penalty but the jury sentenced him to life imprisonment with the chance he might walk free. the jury decided his own life is too high a price to pay for the crime. though the death penalty was on the table bishop was sentenced to life with the possibility of

parole for killing towson gas station owner william ray porter in march 2010. his family visibly emotional moments after. >> it has been just been obviously very difficult, that is all i have. i mean like i say we just appreciate all the support we have gotten and the job that has been done. >> jurors told the judge there were several reasons why they decided against capitol punishment. they said it was because he had never been convicted of a crime before. he was manipulated and acting under duress from the victim's wife carla accused of planning the plot. they also pointed to his lack of family support, drug addiction and mental illness as to why they had mercy on bishop's life. >> very relieved. i mean obviously there is a victim's family here and this is -- you know, this is a tragedy but we believed in what we were telling this jury, that this was a complete

premeditated. the trial of curry is expected to close soon. he is accused of taking bribes from shoppers food between 2003 and 2008. he is charged with bribery, extortion, conspiracy and making false statements. if convicted he could face jail time. >> a baltimore county school has explaining to do after a mix up that left a 4-year-old lost in a strange neighborhood. ron matz is live with details on what happened. good afternoon. >> reporter: hi, don. it was a nightmare scenario for a local mother when she arrived to pick up her young son and found his class completely empty. >> nobody knew anything. they didn't know how -- where he was -- >> it turns out four-year-old pierre had been put on a school bus and dropped off in a different neighborhood. not only does pierre not ride that bus, pierre doesn't ride the bus at all. a concerned neighbor found him wondering alone and called his school. officials say the mix up is

totally unacceptable. >> it is the unthinkable, it is a parent's nightmare, it is a school system's nightmare. parents should be outraged. we are outraged that this happened. >> reporter: baltimore county school officials say there are safe guards in place to prevent incidents like this but admit there was a break down in the system. don, back to you. >> thank you very much, ron. the baltimore county school system says it has identified and disciplined the employees involved. >> we are learning more about the extent of the damage caused when a fire swept through the mount washington tavern. it caused 2.5 million worth of damage. workers are cleaning up. the owners plan on rebuilding the tavern. they say it will take at least a year. some bittersweet news for the city as the mayor prepares a new budget plan. city auditors have identified a 52 million dollar budget shortfall for next year. the mayor's administration will monitor pence costs after years of cut backs to city programs. however, there could be good

news for city employees who were slated to receive a 2% raise. the official budget proposal will be presented in march. >> wikileaks founder julian assange has lost his fight. we have the latest. >> reporter: julian assange walked out of britain's high court calling the ruling against him merely technical. >> i have not been charged with any crime in any country. we will be considering our next step in the days ahead. >> reporter: two judges ruled assange should be extradited to sweden where he is wanted for questioning in the attacks of two volunteers. the wikileaks founder says they were consensual.

♪[ music ] herman cane is back on the campaign trail today despite allegations of sexual harassment. he denies he has changed his stories on the allegations made when he was head of the national restaurant association

back in the 1990s. at least two women got financial payouts that included a confidentiality agreement. however an attorney for one of them now says his clients wants permission to tell her side of the stories. >> s naturally she has been very upset about all this since the story broke last sunday because mr. cane has been giving the impression that she is someone who came out and made false allegations and that is certainly not true. >> recently cane addressed the allegations, saying they were, totally baseless and totally false. >> we are learning more about the investigation into the death of a 16-year-old out in utah. alexis rasmussen disappeared after babysitting for a couple in the neighborhood. her body was later found in nearby woods. now investigators say the couple and the girl were involved in some sort of drug fueled relationship. police say eric and da have long been persons of interest but they still have not been charged with anything. teen pop star justin bieber is facing paternity allegations this noon. a 20-year-old woman has filed a

♪[ music ] >> now first the weather, complete forecast and the first warning of severe weather. >> welcome back, everybody. definitely aboding type of a day. we don't have a whole lot of wind out there, the sun is out and it is going to be a mild afternoon. now we are warming up, 58 in baltimore, closer to our averages. cooler in the valley here in cumberland at 41 but also 57 in

ocean city. now, here are the winds if you are heading out on the waters, very light out there and turning around to the south, that is about all for today. the thing is there is a front out in here and it is actually a major storm over the rockies once again dumping a lot of snow but the thing is that is going to weaken as if moves east. so for us sunshine out there today, clear skies tonight, then tomorrow as that storm approaches it is going to weaken and mainly just clouds dragging their way through here. that is about it. the second part of the storm is going to come through on friday. at this point it looks like the bulk of the moisture with that is going to pass to the south, so something we will be watching, probably getting clouds also from that round but not a lot in the way of showers. so the forecast really comes together like this, today is going to be a beautiful one out there, it already is, 62 degrees a lot of sunshine. tonight we go down into the 30s and then tomorrow sunshine mixing with high clouds from that one front to the west. not a whole lot to it.

♪[ music ] in today's wjz health watch, the centers for disease control reports overdosing on prescription painkillers is an epidemic in the united states, especially for men. government researchers say more people suffer deadly overdoses from prescription painkillers than heroin and cocaine combined. nearly 15,000 people died from
