legendary penn state football coach is caught up in a scandal. >> will legendary coach, joe paterno be forced to step down? >> i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> joe paterno is charged with -- his former coach is charged with molesting eight students. some say he did not do enough to stop the abuse. >> reporter: penn state football coach joe patorno got a big show of support.

and his son told supporters, his father has no intention of resigning. paterno said his father wanted to address the scandal earlier today but the universality canceled it. >> we determined that today's press conference cannot be hold. >> reporter: paterno's former assistant coach, jerry sandusky is charged with molesting 15 boys over an eight-year period. paterno said that he saw sandusky assault a young boy in a locker room shower in 2002. the coach told administrators, as the law requires, but they failed to alert authorities. law enforcement is determining whether paterno had a legal obligation to do more. >> reporter: paterno, during his six decades of coaching, he's won two national championships and pushed his players to succeed on and off the field. >> reporter: matt millen played

in the late 60s and 70s. >> it's pretty disturbing. >> reporter: millen was also at the charity sandusky started for kids, and is where they said he started. >> makes you sick. to see that this could happen at this level, if, in fact, that has happened. >> reporter: it's a black eye on the university and its legendary coach, who may be forced to wrap up his last season with the litany lions. and today, another potential victim is coming forward. the man is in his 20s. and he said he knew sandusky from the second mile charity the coach founded in 1977. fear and anger in frostburg. a student is dead. another in jail for murder. and now, there is more information about the chaotic scene the night of the killing. denise is in the newsroom. >> reporter: the cumberland

times student is reporting the scene saying an ambulance did not respond quickly enough to the stabbing scene. sean a. liggens is charged with stabbing courtney mccoy sunday. mccoy died at an off-campus apartment at a house. there was a crowd of about 150 people there. frostburg police say when medics arrived, people began making verbal death 38s. -- threats. now, the frostburg city police department says it will also respond to 911 calls received off campus. kai? >> members of courtney's church talked about their grief. that's all new at 5:00 and 6:00. shocked by police. the identity of a suspect wounded by a howard county police officer is released today. 19-year-old jeffrey nichols is in critical condition at shock trauma. investigators were investigating the call for an armed man in the 7400 block of high tech road. they say nichols was armed with a gun and put it down.

that's when police opened fire, hitting nichols. howard county police are investigating the shooting. attacking his credibility. in less than an hour, republican presidential candidate herman cain is going to talk about the woman accused of sexual -- accusing him of sexual misconduct. >> reporter: republican national candidate herman cain is going on the offensive. >> there's not an ounce of truth in all of these accusations. >> reporter: he's set to hold a press conference to fight back against allegations from sharon biyalic. she accuses cain of making an unwanted sexual advance towards her. >> i wanted to be the voice and face for those women who couldn't or wouldn't come forward. >> reporter: tuesday, cain's camp put out a question saying, who is sharon biyalic. it lefts -- lists where she was a defendant, menges a bankruptcy filing and includes

behind closed doors, debating whether powerful attorney ulysses currie is guilty of taking bribes. derek valcourt has an update on the case. >> no verdict at all. in fact, it has been relatively quiet as that panel of 12 continues to hsh -- hash through six weeks of testimony. >> reporter: shoppers foot warehouse needed an ally in annapolis. and prosecutors say they needed one in the chair of the powerful budget and state taxation committee. senator ulysses currie admits he was working as a paid consultant for shoppersic -- shoppers, taking nearly a quarter million dollars. his attorneys maintain he did nothing illegal while prosecutors say he was selling his power in exchange for money. jurors must now choose which

side is right. legal analyst, andrew levy. >> right here, you have a defense of, i didn't do it on purpose, i meant well. some jurors are much more receptive to that kind of argument than others. and that can be the kind of thing that jurors can argue a long time about. >> and it, appears that is what is happening. they are now in day 4 of deliberations. and this jury has a lot to consider. keep in mind, there are two former executives from shoppers food warehouse on trial, along with senator ulysses currie. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> curie is charged with multiple counts of violating state and federal laws. he faces 20 years in prison if convicted. it is election day in baltimore city. wjz found voters out casting their ballots this afternoon. turnout is very low. right now, only 4% of regterred- - registered voters are visiting. the polls will remain open

breaking news. there is a verdict in the bribery trial of maryland state senator ulysses currie. currie is accused of taking bribes from a popular chain of grocery stores. he admits he was working as a paid consultant for shoppers. food warehouse taking in nearly a quarter million dollars from the grocery chain. during the trial, currie and his attorneys maintain he did nothing illegal, while prosecutors insist he was selling his power and influence and pushing the grocery store agenda in annapolis in exchange for money. wjz will bring you the verdict as soon as it is announced, but it is in. we have breaking news to report as well. a five-story building in new york comes crashing down,

trapping three workers. those workers were pulled from the rubble a short time ago. this was the scene in brooklyn, new york. there is no condition on the workers at this time. an investigation is under way into what caused that collapse. a school in new mexico is making a push to end bullying. this video shows two ninth graders beating up the third grader in the blue jacket. now, all students are taking classes on bullying. the two teens are charged with a number of offenses and are suspended for the rest of the school year. the sports world is mourning the loss of one of boxing's all-time greats, smoking joe frazier. he passed away last night after a brief battle with liver cancer. susan mcginnis reports for wjz and has more on frazier's life. >> reporter: smoking joe frazier's vicious left hook earned him a place in boxing history. born in south carolina, in 1944, he picked up the sport at an early age.

a top amateur, he won olympic gold and turned pro the following year. in 1971, frazier became the first man to beat muhammad ali, knocking the boxing great to the canvas in the fight of the century in new york's madison square garden. frazier fought ali twice more, losing both battles, including the famous thriller in manila. ali called that fight the closest he ever came to death. in all, the two men traded a total of 241 punches during their total rounds. >> in the three fights. [ indiscernible ] [ laughter ] >> reporter: outside the ring, ali taunted frazier mercilessly. but following his death, ali released a statement saying, the world has lost a great champion, i will always remember joe with great respect and admiration. in later years, frazier ran

will resign. he lost majority in parliament during a routine vote. italy needs to pass new measures to avoid defaulting on its massive debt. a vote on the measure is planned for next week. here in the u.s., a hopeful sign that the job market is improving. employers advertise more jobs in september than at any other point in the last three years. the labor department says they posted more than 3.3 million job openings. that's a 7% increase since august. and the most since the summer of 2008, just before the financial crisis hit. wall street bonuses are set to shrink by an average of 20 to 30% this year from a year ago. it would be the weakest bonus season since the financial crisis of '08. the sluggish economy is hurting businesses at many wall street firms. bonus payments could climb as much as 25%. and tsunami back in march,

>> this video, which has been watched by millions on you tube, shows judge william adams whipping his then-16-year-old daughter with a belt. today, protestors in rockport took to the streets, calling for adams to be removed from the bench. a texas judicial conduct is reviewing the judge's actions. a surprising new study on spanking pins experts against parents. 74% of mothers believe spanking is acceptable for children ages 1 to 3. and 60% condone spanking as a regular form of punishment for young children. meanwhile, for decades, a long list of experts has denounced spanking as ineffective. mary is live in the newsroom with the details. >> reporter: a panel of 22 nutritionists in the u.s. just released their top five. helping people lose weight. topping it with number 1 is the

federal courthouse downtown. the ulysses currie trial has reached a verdict. derek valcourt has more on the verdict. >> reporter: this was a sweeping victory for the defense here. this was not guilty, all the way around, for senator ulysses currie, the embattled 74-year- old prince george's county senator, has been found not guilty on every single one of the charges that he faced. he also found not guilty with him two of the former executives, along with shoppers from shoppers food warehouse who were accused of paying him bribery money. the jury did not buy the prosecution's arguments in this case, that currie intended to commit illegal acts. the jury clearly sided with the defense, who argued that currie thought he was working in a perfectly legal manner for shoppers food warehouse, thought he was not violating any laws, thought he was working with no criminal intent. he was also charged with lying to federal prosecutors. the jury found him not guilty

i guarantee you by 5:00, it will probably be down in the low 50s. south/southeast wind at 60. humidity, 40%. barometer holding steady. 30.21. 68, cumberland. 67, elkton. and by the water, ocean city, 59 degrees. locally, still in the mid- to upper 60s. the cooler spots by the water, annapolis and kent island, at 60, 71, 36. kind of hard to know what to wear. you go out, it's 36 degrees. in the afternoon, it's 71. 59, 39 are the averages now. records, 80 and 24 back in 1960. a light southeast and southerly wind keep us in the warm air for the wind. then we have this front to the west. been talking about it. but the main area of low pressure is going to pass way to our west. a little piece of that will pass through our region thursday. we'll have clouds. a few showers associated with it. not a lot of activity with it. by the time it gets to our region, most of the energy is going to pass way to our region. we might even get through the
