stepping down. long-time penn state head coach, joe paterno is retiring. >> and his first comments about the shocking child sex abuse scandal. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> well, his long and illustrious career is coming to an end. penn state football coach joe paterno is retiring. he is accused of covering up a scandal that rocked the university. jessica kartalija is in state college, pennsylvania, with reaction. but we begin with drew levinson, who reports for wjz. now, many on campus want the college president to leave as well. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's image is no longer on a mural at penn state, the art first painted over it.

-- artist painted over it. the former assistant football coach is charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years. graham spannier stepped down immediately. the outcry came after coach joe paterno told players he would leave at the end of the year. >> this is the first time i've seen him get teary-eyed. >> paterno said, it is one of the greatest sorrows of my life. with the benefit of hindsight, i wish i had done more. in 2002, a student told paterno he saw sandusky molest a boy in the showers. paterno told his superiors, but he did not call police. the board of trustees could still ask paterno to step down immediately. members are having meetings, and they have promised swift and direct action. >> reporter: the former attorney general plans to attend a trustee friday. >> he who preys on a child is

the worst type of person in the world, as far as ierm concerned. -- i'm concerned. >> reporter: in state college, pennsylvania, drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: police say a ninth alleged victim has come forward. sandusky denies all charges. and wjz has complete coverage of the scandal. it continues now. jessica kartalija has reaction from students. good afternoon, jessica. >> reporter: students and faculty. learned that paterno will retire at the end of the season. some are saying that he really had no choice but to retire. amid allegations that jerry sandusky abused those nine victims. still, some say it's a shame that he's caught in the middle of all of this, as for years, he's done so many positive things for the university, extending well beyond the football field. he and his wife sue have given more than $4 million to penn state. students that we spoke with say

that there is just a sadness around campus. you can feel it. one student even began to break down as we interviewed her. it's all very emotional for the students and the faculty here. also very important to mention, some who want to show support for paterno say they're afraid to do so, that it's unfair to all of the victims involved. and while they love the head coach, they're very saddened to hear that he didn't do more to alert police. mary, we talked to students. we hear from players tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. for now, we're live in state college, back to you guys. >> all right, jessica, thank you. and stay with wjz for complete coverage of the penn state scandal. jessica leads our complete coverage from penn state college, as we heard, coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. and breaking news from wall street. as stocks are down big today, over new european economy concerns. at one point, the dow is down over 400 points. right now, the dow is down 389 points. that's off 3% of its value.

the s&p nasdaq also posted big losses today. we'll have much more in money watch, coming up in just a few minutes. shock and sadness for the second time in 15 months, a frostburg student is murdered at an off-campus party. denise is in the newsroom with details of courtney mccoy's funeral and changes at the university. >> reporter: in an e-mail to parents, the president of frostburg said the university will be increasing security, on and off campus. 19-year-old poly tech graduate, courtney mccoy was stabbed to death this weekend outside an off-campus party. frostburg says it will teach civility and conflict resolution to all students. there will also be more campus officers available to provide escorts on campus. >> reporter: viewing services for courtney will be from 1:00 to 7:00 this friday, at empowerment temple. courtney will be laid to rest on saturday. >> police and witnesses say

court fee was trying to break up a fight when she was killed. behind bars, until at least thanksgiving. convicted of manslaughter in the michael jackson death trial. but where dr. conrad murray goes after that, and for how long is anybody's guess. ben tracy reports for wjz from los angeles. >> after dr. conrad murray was led away in handcuffs in the courtroom, he was taken here, to the twin towers of the county jail in downtown los angeles. this will be murray's home until his sentencing on november 29th, reportedly kept alone in his own cell, similar to this one. >> conrad murray is considered to be what is called a keep- away inmate. that means he's going to be kept away from the general population. he won't eat with them, visit with them spend any time with them. he will be kept in virtual isolation. really, it's all for his own safety. >> reporter: an l.a. county spokesperson says there is no truth to earlier reports that murray has been placed on a suicide watch.

he will likely lose his medical license. and he's facing up to 4 years in prison. but many say he'll serve far less and probably in a jail because california's prisons are so overcrowded. >> it's overcrowded on the state level, on the local level. and on the state level, they can't just release you to the streets. so they release you to the l.a. county facilities. and because they can't house you, they then release you to house arrest, electronic monitoring. and in some instances, where it's a low-level crime, they even release you to beach cleanup. >> reporter: despite his role in the death of a pop icon, even the prosecution accepts the likely reality of a light sentence. >> it will be very difficult to achieve an appropriate sentence of incarceration for dr. conrad murray. >> reporter: however, the judge could go for the maximum sentence. he has already shown he intends to be tough on murray by immediately sending him to jail. >> one juror says most of the panel had decided murray's guilt last week on the first day of deliberations, but a vote was not yet unanimous.

moving on tonight, gop presidential hopeful herman cain will try to stay on focus about his tax plan. but he will likely face more allegations. another woman came forward saying she filed a complaint with the national restaurant association in 1999, claiming cain harassed her. cain is insisting it is not true. so far, four women have made claims of inappropriate behavior against him so far. bwi is reporting changes at the international airport. weijia jiang has more on the plans to make air travel safer and more convenient. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. to start, crews are moving the entire air tran operation as it merges with southwest. but that's just the start of big changes that come to bwi marshall. airport crews are building a new connector between concourses b and c.

it will include moving security checkpoints and new sidewalks. there will also be room for improved gatehold. it is scheduled to break ground in april, with hopes to wrap up by summer 2013. changes are also being made to handle increased traffic. we'll have more on that and more on the improvements coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. still without power. hundreds of frustrated business and homeowners in locust point do not have gas service. and for some, it is the third day. adam may speaks to bge about how the repairs to a broken gas main are progressing. >> a natural gas main break in locust point will be tougher to fix than originally thought. a contractor ruptured the 12- inch pipe monday morning. now, gas service has to be rerouted, leaving 900 people without heat and hot water. >> what's going on here. >> last night, residents met with bge officials for answers. >> obviously for us, we have to make sure we get service restored first and foremost.

>> reporter: making the situation more complicated, bge needs to get inside every home. baltimore police is watching as locksmiths break into homes. >> when i showed up from work, the cops are outside. i thought, what happened? >> reporter: carl dilorenzo said bge made a mistake, ernthing his -- entering his home twice. >> they didn't record that they shut off my gas. so they broke back in, just to just re-shut it off. >> whoops. >> yeah. >> businesses like lp steamers, also suffering. they have crabs waiting to be cooked. but no customers to eat them. >> we can't tell them. we don't know what to say. it's bad. we're losing a lot of money. >> reporter: the mayor is telling businesses to stay optimistic. >> we're all working together, trying to resolve this issue and get the project back on track. >> reporter: they're now running some tests on that gas main. if everything goes well, they'll start restoring business to hundreds of people later this afternoon. in locust point, adam may, wjz

a quiet morning turns to chaos on a major highway in arizona. police in phoenix say a milk truck driver was killed when he rear-ended another tanker truck hauling fuel.

the crash sparked a huge fire as you can see, snarling rush hour traffic for hours. some nearby hotels and schools were evacuated. and interstates around were closed. shutting down major ways in and out of the city. trying to figure out what may have caused the death of rapper heavy d. he reportedly suffered a heart attack inside his beverly hills home. heavy was the -- heavy d was the front man of heavy d in the 90s. he was 6'4, 334 pounds. his height and weight were recorded because of has sudden and unexpected passing. he was just 44 yearseld on. -- years old. another problem for rupert murdoch. one of his reporters is accused of spying on prince william and his mother. -- brother.

update. >> the stocks tumbled on uncertainty about the italian and greek economies. the major stock indexes fell more than 3%, following big sell-offs earlier in the european markets. italy's president, named mario monty as senator for life. that means he may lead italy's next government. borrowing costs in italy have soared above 7%. analysts say it's a sign investors are losing faith in italy being able to repay its debt. greece, portugal and ireland. unlike those countries, italy's $2.6 trillion in debt is too big for other european countries to rescue. >> federal reserve chairman ben bernanke held a conference in d.c. that small businesses are struggling to get loans more than two years after the recession ended. bernanke said it could ease.

numbers will be. and we're right there again today, with a good bit of sunshine. we have a good east/southeasterly wind. barometer in control. temperatures across the state, ranging from 59 in oakland. also down in patuxent river. up into the mid-60s. 61 on the shore. 63 in northeast maryland. we have 63. mid-50s to mid- to upper 50s across the state. a little cooler down on kent island and annapolis. that's kind of regulating the temperatures right along the water's edge. the winds are coming along with a souther southerly component. southwest winds. we have southeast winds around baltimore, elkton and around hagerstown. again, a southerly component, keeping us in the mild zone, even though we have rain on the

way. what we are watching here is this. we are going to start to see this later. but there's not a lot of moisture with it. while we do have a chance of rain, what we do know is we will see the temperatures cool down for a bit of time. it moves on out of here. and we'll start to see more sunshine, heading into the middle of the week. the cooldown happens for saturday. it will be a little breezy on saturday as well. and then on sunday, right on through monday, tuesday, and wednesday, more high pressure builds in. this cool air gets pushed off. and we'll start to look for temperatures getting up into the above-average range again. still keeping an eye on sean, tropical storm. that is going to absorb some energy. and also help to denect sean away. this is -- deflect sean away.

about. >> the pentagon is sending an investigation. investigators say workers lost parts of the remains of at least two soldiers. >> what i want to talk about is tough stuff. >> air force chief of staff eric norton is talking about caskets, coming home from iraq and afghanistan. a federal investigation has found gross mismanagement at the dover air force base mortuary in delaware. >> we found a pattern of wrongdoing, and the air force has refused to admit culpability. >> reporter: carol lerner's office, investigated whiftle blower complaints and found two cases in which body parts of a soldier and air force pilot were either lost or misplaced. in another case, an arm bone was sawed off, in order to fit a marine killed by a roadside

occasionally smile at the j. he's facing charges for setting up the 2000 bombing at yemen. this saturday first potential death penalty case at guantanamo under president obama. vic, back to you. >> thank you, kai. his lawyers say that almasiry was subjected to harsh interrogation tactics that amount to torture. thousands take to the streets, fighting for education. and they're not alone. as tina kraus reports, hundreds are on hand in case the protest turns ugly. >> reporter: massive crowds of students march through the streets of london, to protest -- higher education fees. >> near the stock exchange. >> reporter: police in brightly- colored jackets, surrounded the crowd and kept them moving. >> you can see how heavily they

are. >> reporter: about 4,000 police officers were on duty for the march. they had threatened to use rubber bullets for things loo like they did last year. >> reporter: last november, about 55,000 students took part in a demonstration that turned violent. that protest was also about education costs. a small group attacked the headquarters of the conservative party, shattering glass windows and starting fires. a month later, demonstrators battled. and attacked a car carrying prince charles. alt wednesday's protest, police made several arrests. but it remains mostly freal. >> some say they will have to

triple theirtrician rate. an attempted armed robbery at a rest stop. it happened at the maryland house near aberdeen. there are few details now. but state police say it happened at an exxon gas station. no one was injured. new information about a police- involved shooting in howard county. 19-year-old jeffrey nichols was shot by police earlier this week when he refused to drop a weapon. last month, officers responded to a similar incident with nichols who was armed then as well. the officers involved in the incident are on administrative duty. nichols is in critical condition. in today's wjz healthwatch, a new study raises serious questions about whether or not doctors who treat injured children are recognizing signs of abuse. mary bubala has the latest. >> police say too many doctors are indecisive, when it comes to reporting suspected abuse. they examined 92 child injury cases. they found more than a dozen should have been reported but were not.

researchers say physicians are unclear about what meets the standard of reasonable suspicion for abuse. they also fear that parents will be upset and blame them. although it is a relatively small study, researchers say it is proof many doctors could use more training on the signs of abuse. >> the study appears in the most receipt issue of the journal academic pediatrics. once you have children, there is not nearly enough time to stop bad habits. the 19-year study assessed more than 200 males between 12 and 31 years old, fathers in their mid-20s and 30s, show the biggest decline in bad habits. also less likely to admit decline. if you had only seen the day through the window. must get outside for a breath of beautiful fresh air. here's a look at sunny, mild conditions. but it was gorgeous. wjz has weather and traffic together. >> it was cooler but beautiful.

right now, take a look at radar. nothing around here. a few high clouds out to the west. because there was a front out there. and there are some showers well west of us. but overnight, with that front approaching, clouds will be on the increase. and tomorrow, once the front gets through the region, it will turn chilly again and be breezy. temperatures actually on friday will actually go below normal for a few days. back in the low 50s. so we do have cooler air. and just a risk of a few showers late tonight. probably more likely thursday morning. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin. >> 95 northbound was starting to see slowing in that direction. if you're heading in the harbor tunnel throughway past the beltway. and that's greenspring avenue to harford road. the north side outer loop, not doing quite as well. you're looking at 25 minutes there. that's from providence road to greenspring. traveling west side inner loop, at least 15 minutes there.

detectives in louisiana are looking for answers after a man is found dead at the occupy new orleans camp. they say the body of the 53- year-old man may have been at the camp in duncan plaza for two days. there are no visible signs of trauma. an autopsy to determine the cause of death is expected in the next few days. an investigation is under way in washington, d.c. after a

secret service average accidentally discharges his gun. the agent was sitting in a parole car when the -- patrol car when the gun accidentally went off. >> election day goes wrong for one man as he shows up to cast his vote in ohio. mike schuh is in the newsroom with more on what happened. mike? >> reporter: well, denise, the men walked in cleveland and was attacked by one of the last people you would expect. 45-year-old greg flanagan said he noticed a poll worker was talking. flanagan said he thought things were getting out of hand. so he told the poll worker to calm down. that's when the worker turned on him and head-butted him and bit him. flanagan says another poll worker pulled the man off of him. denise, back to you. >> all right. the man who attacked flanagan has surrendered to police. an amazing story of survival out in louisiana. a farmer's leg is cut off and he manages to drive himself to get help. his foot slipped into an augur.

he broke off the foot and drove to where a medivac helicopter picked him up. the man said he plans to get a prosthetic leg and go back to work on the farm. tracing steps in mississippi. police are frustrated because the story the boy's mother tells detectives doesn't make sense. craig legeros has the latest from bellevue. >> reporter: three electronic billboards are up in bellevue. police asking for help to find a missing 2-year-old, sky. >> we're very much alarmed. >> reporter: the boy was left in a car sunday morning, according to his mother, julia bur cova. when she rather ran out of gas. she left him in the car only to return to find him missing. the boy's sister said sky was riding with him. but when we asked who else saw this little boy besides mom, we got a surprise answer. >> so far, we have only been

for this date. yesterday, of course, for the upper 60s. 61, ocean city. and a mild 66 in cumberland. those clouds will continue, increased tonight. by morning, maybe 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 a.m. chance of showers aren't even that great. it is possible some of the areas won't even see the rain coming through. but one thing, it will get cooler. 55, kent island and annapolis. right now, southeast winds. they kept us cooler today. because the winds are off the bay and the ocean. so, temperatures running 6 or 7 degrees cooler. eventually, by tomorrow, winds will begin to shift to the west/northwest, with that front, a little chillier this afternoon. iowa over portions of western wisconsin. you can see, the front doesn't have a lot of moisture. most of the energy heading up toward the great lakes. a little skinny line of showers in west virginia. that will continue to progress
