>> you dated somebody a month and moved into together? >> yes. >> it was less than that, wasn't it? >> yeah. >> he moved in with me about a week after we started dating. >> you dated somebody a week and moved in with them? >> yes. >> this is the plaintiff -- he says the defendant, his ex-girlfriend, who he lived with, is holding some of his stuff hostage and he needs the judge's help. he's nice as he can be to the defendant and her daughter. he's suing for $2,636.29.
12:01 pm
>> this is the defendant -- she says the plaintiff purchased the things while they were living together and never talked about who would get what if they split up because they never thought they would split up. the plaintiff is suing her because he she broke up with him and nothing more, nothing less. she's accused of holding on tight. >> all parties, please raise your right hand. >> what you are about to see is real. the participants are not actors. they are actual litigants with a case pending in civil court. both parties have agreed to drop their claims and have their cases settled here, before judge marilyn milian in our forum -- "the people's court." >> litigants have been sworn, your honor.
12:02 pm
>> thank you, douglas. you are suing your former girlfriend, tammy taylor? >> that is correct. >> for $$2,636.29 for items. what happened? >> we dated about a month and a half, two months. >> how long ago? >> from february until the end of april. >> ok. >> we met through a mutual friend. >> uh-huh. >> basically we hit it off, dated, moved in. >> you dated for a month and a half. >> yeah. >> ok. so where in that continuum was hit it off, started dating, moved in? moved in is on what date? >> it was like the first week of april. >> you dated somebody a month and moved in together? >> yes. >> it was less than that, wasn't it? >> yeah. we -- he moved in with me about a week after we started dating. >> you dated somebody a week
12:03 pm
and moved in with them? >> yes. >> how did that work out for you? [laughter] >> who are the people with you? >> this is my boyfriend. we have been dating on and off for two years. >> who is the woman with you? >> this is my daughter's mother who -- >> are you dating again? >> we went back to start dating again. >> how old are you? >> 25. >> how old are you? >> 32. >> ok. you have children, right? >> yes. >> so your little revolving door romance life is not always about on somebody else because you moved this man in and don't know if you are a pedophile -- >> you've known him, what? did you ever run his criminal background check? i have money in my wallet that's been there longer than your relationship and before you moved him into your house. serious. you can't do that when you have children. how old are your children? >> 16, 14 and 8. >> ok. do you think maybe this has an
12:04 pm
affect on the 16, 14 and 8? >> i have two girls and one girl. >> which is the girl? >> 14-year-old. >> what do you think she thinks? it's particularly important with that 14-year-old girl. >> no. she took it the hardest because she had a great relationship with brian. >> of course. she had a relationship with all of 25 seconds. you move in together after a nanosecond. what next? >> her couch was being held together by a two-by-four. i was in the middle of a custody battle. >> with her? >> yes. >> ok. you bought you a new living room set? >> no, i have my own. >> ok. go ahead. >> and with the agreement of it because i paid for the full thing was when and if we broke up that i was able to take it with me. >> ok. is that true? >> no, it is not. >> you know how people who are madly in love and write out some kind of agreement or have a verbal agreement about where stuff is going when they break up.
12:05 pm
if you thought -- if you were a planner you wouldn't move in. so you pay for an entire living room set. according to you you have a verbal agreement that goes to you. according to you, nobody discussed that because you are not planning on breaking up. so what happens? you move in. you buy a living room set. what happens? and you buy numerous other stuff. you buy her son a few ton. you buy your daughter a dressing. you bring in your own tv. >> correct. >> these are the things you are suing for. what happens after you move in? >> everything was going ok. some things started changing. >> what changed? from your long established pattern? >> the attitude. >> what, how? >> just always moody. always giving me an attitude. i'd work 10, 12-hour days and just -- it was always a problem when i came home and then i started finding out -- >> what was the problem, that you worked? >> the hours that i worked. basically we both came to an agreement and said this isn't going to work out. >> whose idea was it?
12:06 pm
neither one liked each other or -- >> it was my idea that we broke up. >> do you acknowledge that? >> yes. >> she breaks up with you and it's how many weeks now? >> about five weeks. >> and you agree with that? >> it was about six or seven. >> ok. >> and then what happened? >> i leave. she tells me i have until saturday to get all of my belongs out. >> ok. who was paying the rent? >> me. >> did you pay any rent? >> i didn't pay rent but i contributed with other things. >> how did you contribute with other things? >> groceries. driving her around because she was out on disability. taking time off from work. >> to do what? she was complaining that you were working too much. to do what? >> take her to the doctor. >> is that how you were to contribute or were you supposed to pay rent? >> whenever she asked money for bills i always gave. >> who says you can't find love in an instant? oh, right you can't. the testimony continues. >> who made you do that? who made you the big man on campus for a woman you knew for

day. >> so you took a bunch of stuff that day. what was the stuff you did take? >> my other tv. i took maybe half of the pot and pan set, if that. >> why didn't you just take it all? >> -- >> because -- >> she had everything packed up in the corner of her apartment >> hold on. you brought a tv in. >> yes. >> an extra tv. nobody needs 52 tv's. the tv that you brought in, why didn't you take? >> it wasn't there for me to take. and they said they wouldn't go into her son's bedroom to take it out. >> that tv was in your son's room? >> yes. >> why didn't you let him take the tv? >> i forgot about it. i text messaged him saying he could pick up the tv. i apologized. >> the living room was what? >> considering he made me throw my couch away, my end table and everything i had. so now if he takes it all i have to replace everything that i once had before.
12:12 pm
and the same with my daughter's dresser. he's the one that said, let's throw it away and let's buy her a new room. she's left with no dresser. i think that's unfair. and the same thing with my son's bed. my son had a bed and my son just wanted two mattresses on the floor. he didn't want the frame. the frame was sitting in my hallway and my son had made a comment saying he always wanted a few ton. brian went out and -- fouton. brian went out and bought him as a gift. he wants that back. >> is it your perception that the living room set is a gift from you? it belongs to the apartment and i'm keeping the apartment, what is your take on this? >> i want it. room set. i said, no you are not. you are not taking the living room set. and those were my exact words and do i have proof. i have the text messages saved in my phone. >> let me see that. >> these are the text messages since we broke up. >> just scroll up and down? >> yep. >> we'll be there after work to get my stuff and my couches. me. couches stay. try again. him, bought them, not you. i have the receipt. you, then i want all the blank i bought. i have those receipts. what are you talking about? >> i spent over $300 in babies r us for his daughter to have supplies, a car seat, a stroller, everything for her to have at my house. >> and he took that? >> yep. >> what blank? always -- i always paid. you are such a liar. liar is l-i-a-r.
12:18 pm
i am not playing these games with you. i will there after work to get my stuff. go ahead. i want the rent money you owe and half the utility money and then that equals that. ok. here's the problem, my friends. ok. what is your response to her response which is, what are you kidding, i paid the rent, i paid the utilities. we both paid stuff. how are you going to separate the pots and pans of my life, judge, during that time? you guys make stupid, rash decisions and then you want somebody with scientific precision to cut out exactly who had the salad and who had the soda and figure out who owes who exactly what because no matter what you say she owes you and then you say i paid this, she paid this. do you think we are equipped to do that? we neither have the interest in going through that nor are we equipped to do that. ok. rent is how much? >> 990 a month. >> and he's there almost two months in rent he didn't play. plus the utilities.
12:19 pm
and you have $1,700. now she has no set because you made her get rid of it. there's a value in that. there's a value you didn't pay in how much rent you had to pay. here's what's going to happen. the living room set, you're even. the kitchen set, part of it you're going to get outside. the part she says is still there and you have the other part. the dresser and the fouton is gifts to her children. i am not going to make her children give them back to you and sleep on nothing. the tv is yours. we are going to make arrangements for a third party to come and pick it up. and the trailer rental and storage rental, it could not be clear there was going to be debate about that. if you went and did that in anticipation the police would go your way, it turns out you are a bad gamble. >> according to the police, as long as i have proof of everything -- >> that didn't work out, did it? she's laying claim to it. who won in court? i understand it's a brand new living room set. who made you do that? who made you do that? who made you big man on campus
12:20 pm
for a woman you knew two weeks, this stuff isn't good enough? apparently it was good enough for her. i am buying new stuff for everybody. drinks around on me. drinks on me. all right. we broke up. you got to pay me. when you don't pay any of the expenses there. you pay for groceries? no. this is a very uneven business. return the tv to him. return the rest of his belongings that are there. ok. that's my verdict. good luck. >> thank you. >> all right. let's see what he thinks about his decisions now that the verdict is in. what's your feeling? >> i think it's a little harsh, honestly. i paid for everything, every time we went anywhere. i had to take time off of work and stuff to make sure she got back and forth from the doctor. >> we heard about that. >> it is what it is. >> are you ready to man up and say, ok, i made a bad decision and i will take my loss? >> did i make a bad decision.
12:21 pm
it is what it is. >> does this cause you to think twice about anything? >> maybe. maybe. >> all right. go around the corner there and sign out. all right. so come on in here. are you satisfied how this has worked out finally? >> absolutely. >> well, you look a little like -- >> i was nervous but fair is fair. we did put out a lot of money towards each other but, you know, it's equal. >> what did you learn from this whole thing? >> never to take a advice from friends that people are good guys and let him move in. >> your friends told you to have him move in? >> they said he was a good guy and take their advice. help him out. >> harvey. >> when you move in with somebody it is so important that you have to establish the ground rules who owns what going into the relationship so you can -- in case it doesn't work out you know how things get divided up. it is simply the grownup thing
12:22 pm
to do. that will do it for this case. litigants in the next case on their way to the courtroom right now. >> this is the plaintiff -- anthony. he says he and his daughter bought some cherry kitchen cabinets from the defendant and they were delivered in the wrong sizes and one of them was the wrong color. the defendant said he could correct the problem but it would cost him another $500 to fix the mistake. hah. he wants all his money back and here he is suing for the $1,500 he's owed. >> this is the defendant -- he says the plaintiff did all the measuring himself and ordered just what he wanted and that is just what was delivered. he tried talking to the plaintiff about the problem but the guy wouldn't communicate with him. bottom line, he tried to do right by him but was ignored. he's accused of not getting it right. >> all parties, please raise

your right hands. >> what is the only -- trust me. i have been doing this a long time and i am not going to forget what i'm asking. he's going to be so uncomfortable it's not worth to he's going to be so uncomfortable it's not worth to try and [ gasp ] [ mom ] my husband -- he thinks it's a 3-sheeter. i say 1-sheeter. bounty can clean the mess with less. the plaintiff to pay to fix them. but the defendant says the plaintiff did the measuring. it's the case of size does matter. >> thank you, douglas. anthony, you are suing the furniture company -- asked us not to use the name of the furniture company -- represented by -- - u are not the owner of the company, correct? >> i'm the owner. >> oh, you are the owner. owner of the company. you asked us to refer to us as your first name. for $1,500 for kitchen cabinets that were ordered in the wrong size by their mistake and not yours. tell me what's going on. >> yes, i own a couple of apartment buildings and my daughter was moving into one. and we noticed that we wanted to update it with new cabinets so i asked my daughter to go and purchase cabinets of her like and she went to lowe's and -- >> who is this -- >> this is my daughter. >> ok. go ahead. >> she went to lowe's and she
12:27 pm
liked some that were there and she didn't like the color so she proceeded to the gentleman's place. >> ok. come on up. and were you with her? were you with her? >> no. >> how did you learn of their place? >> well, my cousin and i were shopping around and we stumbled upon his facility. >> ok. >> so during brousing i saw some i really liked so then i told my daughter the location. i asked him to come with me to come see him and see -- >> ok. you've already been to lowe's and they did those cute computerized program. so you have those with you? >> yes. >> but they were nice enough to sketch the whole thing out. then what? >> so they sketched it out. we came back. >> it's a computer program that actually puts everything in its place and sort of tells you the size cabinets you need. >> yes. >> ok. do you have what lowe's gave you? >> yes.
12:28 pm
>> yes. >> and did you give what lowe's gave -- so now you're in the picture, right? >> yes, i'm in the picture. >> and do you give to the -- is this a sale's person? was he the sale's person that day? >> did you help them? >> i am not 100% sure. >> is your name on the paperwork? >> yes. i was the person who -- >> is your name ever on it when you are not the person who helped? >> no. >> you don't have an actual recollection of them? >> no. >> ok. that's fine. hopefully you do that much business where you wouldn't. and you apparently buy a lot of cabinets because you don't remember him either. do you give him the lowe's sheets? >> yes. >> ok. and what happened? >> we talked about the price. we looked at colors and at that point i showed my daughter in and she said these are the ones we want so i gave them my specs and my measurement. he took the information down and basically -- >> so you did the measurements?
