the privately own.zuccotti park at the southern tip of manhat n manhattan. at least 40 people were arrested. the park had been occupied continuously for two months. manuel is at the park at the latest. what's the situation down there now? >> good morning, terrell. hundreds of police officers are blocking the streets here in lower manhattan. there were many arrests. demonstrators, we understand many of them are still holding out occupying zuccotti park, but most dispersed into groups and scattered around this part of the city trying to avoid arrest. police officers in riot gear moved into lower manhattan to clear out protesters. the encampment has become the focal point of the occupy wall street movement. but about 1:00 a.m. this morning, police ordered everyone to leave saying the park had become unsanitary and hazardous. officers arrested everyone who resisted.

for nearly eight weeks, demonstrators used the park to protest economic inequality. it sparked a movement around the country. but people who live and work near the park have increasingly complained about their neighbors. >> a lot of waste and dump behind my alleyway. where i dump the garbage -- >> by waste, you mean human waste? >> yeah, human waste. >> protesters have been told they can return once the park is cleaned, but they will not be able to bring back tents or sleeping bags. monday, police dismantled an occupational encampment. manhattan protesters were planning a demonstration this thursday to mark the two-month anniversary of their encampment. police are doing a pretty good job of trying to keep the media of seeing what's going on right at the park, even restricting the air space up above and keeping a lot of cameras and a lot of the major media outlets on the other side of the block aid.

>> and you mentioned allow protesters back in the park but not with tents or sleeping bags. what will protesters say to that? >> they're thinking of moving to another nearby park and moving to central park later today to do some kind of march through central park and set up shop there. we'll see where the protesters set up. everybody is using social media to keep a step ahead of where to go next. >> could be a long day in new york city. manny, thanks. this morning, the campus of the university of north carolina wilmington is on lockdown. police have been searching for a gunman. the suspect held up four people late last night and headed into campus. to the scandal at penn state university now. the "new york times" is reporting the case may be growing as more alleged victims come forward. and the former penn state football coach charged with sexually abusing eight young boys says he is innocent.

jerry sandusky says he is no a pedophile. jerry sandusky says he is nod a pedophile. >> reporter: jerry sandusky denies he abused any young boys. in a television interview with bob costas, he refused the allegations. >> i say that i am innocent of those charges. >> are you a pedophile? >> no. >> reporter: sandusky was charged last week with 40 counts of sexually abusing eight boys he met through his charitable program, the second mile, which helps at risk youths. the complain details claims with victims including at the penn state shower room. >> i have horsed around with kids. i -- i have showered after workouts. i have hugged them and touched their leg without intent of sexual contact. >> the president of second mile resigned monday in what he called after effort to restore faith in the organization. the former philadelphia district

attorney is now representing the charity's board. >> we do know that pedophiles don't become pedophiles at age 50. i think a lot more about mr. sandusky is going to come out. but that doesn't mean the board knew about it. >> reporter: the board is doing its own digging to find out what could have been done differently. there's criticism on many levels as to why charges against sandusky haven't been brought forth sooner. >> it takes a lot to develop a case. the people should be assured that we tried to move that case as quickly as we possibly could. >> late monday, the "new york times" reported close to ten additional victims have come forward. sandra hughes, cbs news. >> and at the center of the penn state case is the man who says he saw sandusky sexually assault a young boy in 2002. it's been unclear how immediately he reacted or what he saw. now for the first time mcqueary is trying to clarify. in an e-mail object stained by cbs news, he wrote, i did the

right thing. you guys know me. i didn't just turn and run. i made sure it stopped. mcqueary is currently on administrative leave. powerful winds estimated to be near 80 miles per hour and possible tornado caused damage in upstate new york. in southern indiana, a possible trees and power lines were knocked down. politics now, a stumble by herman cain and a surge in the poll of newt gingerich. cnn poll of likely republican voters finds statistical ties between mitt romney and newt gingerich. yesterday, cain struggled to answer a question on libya during an interview with the milwaukee sentinel. >> so you agree with president obama on libya, or not? >> okay. libya.
