a threat to the president. shots fired at the white house. >> the suspect now in custody after a massive manhunt. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> a suspect is taken into custody a short time ago, in connection with shots fired at the white house. protective glass blocks that bullet. it hit a window in the area where the first family eats and sleeps. danielle nottingham reports. the president was not at home at the time. >> reporter: police in pennsylvania arrested this man, oscar ortega hernandez. the secret service wants to talk to him about the bullet that hit the white house. agents found a cracked exterior window at 1600 pennsylvania avenue tuesday morning. protective glass stopped the bullet from entering the part of the white house where

president obama's family lives. the secret service is investigating whether or not the bullets are linked to an incident friday night. police swarmed an area around the white house, after witnesses heard gunfire. authorities tracked down a car and an ak-47, a few blocks away near the roosevelt bridge. >> reporter: president obama was not here at the white house when the shots upon were fired. he was in california. >> reporter: evidence collected from the car found on friday let u.s. park police to issue an arrest warrant for 21-year- old ascar-- oscar ortega hernandez. >> this is a man who discharged a rifle in downtown d.c. i think that speaks volumes. >> reporter: state troopers caught up with ortega-hernandez at a hotel wednesday afternoon. he has an arrest record in three states. and investigators say evidence shows he has a fixation with the white house. >> reporter: in washington,

danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: early this year, police charged a marine corps reservist with the predawn shootings at military buildings around washington. now to the latest on the penn state child sex abuse scandal. vic is in the newsroom with more on what mike mcqueary is saying. >> reporter: the e-mail says he did talk to police, after the alleged attack in the shower involving jerry sandusky. mcqueary said when he allegedly saw san dunky sodomize a boy, he went to the police. he said, no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to to be in my shoes for those 30 to 45 seconds, trust me, end quote. san dunky is facing 45 counts of child sex abuse. >> coach mcqueary is on paid leave. the crackdown on "occupy protestors" is growing. demonstrators in baltimore are feeling the heat.

derek valcourt has more on what baltimore's mayor is saying in response to action in new york and oakland. >> reporter: occupy baltimore protestors have been asked not to camp downtown. so far, they have refused to move, and the city has refused to force them out. >> if you refuse to leave the park, you'll be subject to arrest. >> reporter: in new york, police in riot gear occupied the park. tensions also high in denver as police moved to push protestors off the sidewalk. >> every time they do cramp down on a free speech movement like that, the movement only grows. >> reporter: at occupy baltimore, word is out about what is happening in other cities. protestors they is say -- say they hope that doesn't happen here. >> we never know how the police force is going to react to coming into the square. >> i think it's important to stand by our principals as peaceful demonstrators and to not let the threat of violence sway our belief. >> we're going to deal with it

at a time of our choosing really. >> reporter: this morning, mayor stephanie rawlings-blake acknowledged protestors are icnorring rule -- ignoring rules at the campsite. but she would not say at all how the city plans to deal with the occupy protest movement. >> we have some that have joined the encampment. and i need to make sure that we do what's right by them as well. >> reporter: more protestors may be on the way this weekend. a group of occupy wall street protestors in the middle of their march, from new york to d.c., are expected to stop at the "occupy baltimore" movement downtown. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, what former presidential adviser karl rove tells wjz about being heckled by occupy baltimore protestors last night. new details about that wild fbi raid in southwest baltimore. charging documents are revealing about the federal operation. adam? >> reporter: according to the

criminal complaint, atf agents are trying to stop a home invasion robbery. dozens moved in after the suspect outlined those plans. one suspect tried to escape in a ford explorer you see here. he crashed into a minivan and a fence and then another vehicle and slammed into a telephone pole. the group is believed to have ties to a mexican drug cartel. the six suspects are currently facing drug and firearms charges. >> one atf agent is injured in the incident. but he is expected to fully recover. risking a deadly showdown. prosecutors release a -- four men in georgia would be a mistake. the attorneys for the elderly men says keeping them locked up while awaiting trial is a virtual death sentence for his ill client. the u.s. magistrate did not immediately issue a decision. more travelers have carry-

on luggage, trying to avoid the airline baggage fees. bigat shiban is reporting, this is also causing taxpayer money and raising security concerns. >> reporter: michael and marilyn mccartel are in for a white before their -- wait before their flight to florida. >> it's almost like a zoo. >> reporter: like many others, they are flying with carry-on bags that must go through the security lines. airline passengers are packing about 90 million more carry-ons than just two years ago. avoiding the checked luggage fees. >> sometimes they're difficult for us to manage. we're on a fixed income. it's one more expense. >> reporter: but the surplus of bags, often stuffed to the max, presents an extra challenge for airport security screeners. >> if we're trying to get everybody through in the next line of fashion, we need to spend more time to resolve those potential risks. and if they are not packed,

then it's frankly easier to do that. >> reporter: and the transportation security administration says screening all of those carry-ons, cost about $260 million a year. the u.s. travel association is lobbying to bring back the days of at least one free checked bag. but last year, baggage fees brought the airline industry about $3.4 billion. >> fees is relatively small. helped the airlines maintain any area of profitability at all. >> i have our grandkids' christmas gift in this one. try to get that through. try to get to the post office. they've gone up, too. >> which means the winding wait at the airport won't be any shorter. >> those baggage fees are also attracted to airlines because they're exempt from federal taxes. the grace period is over in howard county. if you speed, a camera will get you, and you're going to pay.

as of 6:00 this morning, drivers caught by speeds 12 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit will face a $40 fine. so far, the county only has two cameras, but hopes to eventually get more. >> reporter: it is a wet, gray day outside. here's a live look at a mild afternoon, where the rain appears to be over for now. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> it's a temporary lull because there's more rain coming. we've had about 28/100ths of an inch. a little less than a third. as you see around the baltimore region, more rain. but further west, there's even more. in fact, quite a bit down to the south and west. let me show you. let me open up and go down to virginia and kentucky. look at all of that rain down there. not all of that is going to be in our region. but we expect another batch of rain moving in tonight. and it will probably last until

maybe 9:00 or 10:00 now, before your thursday morning clearing up. but eventually, tomorrow afternoon, rain moves out, breezy and turning a lot colder in the last couple of days. it will be chilly for the end of the week, but it will be dryer. kai? >> bob, thank you. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. the rain definitely not making your drive a pleasant one. that's for sure. if you're traveling westbound, accident at 97, blocking all lanes. the westbound traffic is being diverted onto telegraph road. we also have an accident in the fallston area. 95 southbound at 195 for another crash in that region. and as far as the beltway goes, on the west side inner loop, at least 15 minutes there, from 95 to security boulevard. and 25-minute delay on the outer loop. that's in harford road to the harrisburg expressway. taking 70 westbound, pretty jammed up there, from 29 to marriottsville road. and several accidents, pulaski highway, at north point road, east cold spring lane at

a man shot by police on the university of california berkeley campus has died. police found christopher travis in the business school, after an employee reported seeing him with a gun. when police ordered him to drop his weapon, he refused, and officers opened fire. the 32-year-old was an undergrad student. police say travis's gun was loaded. an investigation is under way in ohio, after a huge gas line explodes, shooting flames, hundreds of feet into the air. it happened this morning near gloucester. smoke and flames could be seen from miles away. there's no word on exactly how the explosion happened. no one was hurt. the date is set for the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards. that trial will begin january 30th. edwards is accused of asking

two campaign donors to provide nearly $1 million in secret payments to hide his pregnant mistress. edwards said he didn't know about the money and private jets to fly hunter around the country and put her up in luxury homes and hotels. they are two of the navy's smallest ships, but they arrive in baltimore, ahead of what will be a major convoy. alex demetrick reports on why dozens of ships are headed our way. >> reporter: the navy calls them cyclone classes. small patrol ships with names like hurricane and monsoons. >> we are the part of the navy that goes out and reaches out and touches someone. in all levels of escalation conflict. but our job is to be out there, and to be out in the front lines. >> reporter: that means for small vessels, they pack plenty of fire power. and as they dock at the inner harbor, they had people stopping to watch. >> we were just walking through solid and thought this was pretty neat, that we're

s&p off 21. nasdaq down 27. let's go to new york, where alexis alexis alexis christoforous's has tonight's cbs money watch update. oil topped $100 a barrel for the first time in four months. the u.s. economy is finally showing signs of life. and investors are beth that will increase demand. but rising prices for oil could mean higher gas and could squeeze costs. target beat the street. the retailer says higher improvement and credit card pushed profits above wall wall street's estimates. barnes and noble pushed the nook tablet. this came just after amazon began shipping its similar kindle fire. both hope their tablets will be popular gifts for the holidays. apple's ipad has so far dominated the market. that device starts at $500.

pretty much all over the place. no real, real direction. now, low pressure that has caused pretty severe weather, portions of georgia had tornado watches out. even a couple of tornado warnings. a little snow in western kansas right there. colder air out there. all across the east, you see the ohio valley, batch of rain, all moving off to the east/northeast. a lot of it is going to pass from the west and northwest. we're in this nice lull right now, which is great for the drive home. but there's more rain. some of it moving late tonight into tomorrow morning before it finally clears out. then we'll get sunny, breezy and turn colder during the day tomorrow. winds will shift more to the northwest. a lot colder tomorrow night. friday, another chilly day. but for the weekend, high pressure movessa off the coast. and guess what. another warmup just in time for the weekend. with dry conditions. pretty nice weekend shaping up. northwest winds. that will be picking up at the bay up to 20 knots. and it will be a small craft

>> here's what people are talking about. >> occupy protestors in new york prepare for a big march on wall street, just as they lose camp where the movement was to launch moments ago. >> occupy wall street protestors stay dry on a rainy day. they insist their movement is not over, even though a court order put an end to the camp they set up in zuccotti park. >> right now, it sound like the movement is over. because we don't have these tents. there's not a huge visual presence. are still here and very much involved. >> reporter: overnight, police moved out, leaving security to private guards, hired by the park's owner, to enforce the rules, which includes no tents, no sleeping. many who live and work in the area, applaud the city's decision to remove the camp. >> i do support people organizing and voicing their opinions. but it has to be within

reasonable grounds. >> reporter: protestors no longer have a park to camp in. but insist they don't need one in order to keep their movement going. >> how does like civil rights remain viable if there is no march on washington? how does like gay rights remain viable, if there's no march in san francisco? it's an intellectual idea. it's like this idea is not dying, it's not going anywhere. >> reporter: to prove their point, organizers say they will stage marches and events through new york and around the world, to mark the two-month anniversary of the day they launched. occupy wall street. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> marchers are also -- marches are also planned in spain, belgium and germany. the woman accused of locking mentally disabled adults in a basement is facing trial. >> 54-year-old linda weston and three others are charged with keeping the adults locked up in a boiler room to keep them from

collecting their social security checks. a judge ruled today weston is competent to stand trial, based on the results of a psychiatric evaluation. the evaluation did note she has numerous mental health problems. >> in 1983, weston served four years in prison for locking her sister's boyfriend in a closet until he died of starvation. this morning, police went to a home to serve a warrant for failure to pay child support. the suspect invited officers inside and peacefully surrendered. >> state police cut a hole in the side of the house. the gunman was now in custody. noabs nobody was seriously injured. -- nobody was injured. subject of high-level meetings. with conditions improving, nato is ready to hand control back to afghans.

>> slowly nato's transferring the security of afghanistan over to afghans. the next regions to be handed over will soon be announced by president hamid karzai. nato and afghan officials have told cnn, including two of what have been the most violent parts. first, in hellman, there's the district of nad e. ali, where many british troops have died over the years. buttals in kandahar, the organ dale valley. where many americans have also died. now, an afghan official tells us security is a lot better. but that's because the americans are there in force if they leave, he tells us, it may get worse and fast. but the logic of this, they say, is that they face the toughest work while nato still has help. >> it is good to have a significant presence in afghanistan.

and that will provide the security for the afghan security forces to defend themselves in the meantime, have the support of nato. >> reporter: transition, end america's long-term role in afghanistan, security are to be discussed here in kabul. a meeting of tribal elders, called by president hamid karzai. but still, the hills around lined with police. the security of the meeting itself is the real story. the taliban claiming on sunday, they had a leaked security plan for the event. >> now, among the topics up for debate today, how long american troops stay. the possibility of peace with the taliban and the future of night raids by u.s. special forces. president obama is in australia to announce an increase in america's military presence there. 250 marines will arrive down under next year with a full military staff of 2500 within a few years. u.s. military officials say the agreement is about providing disaster aid and combatting

pipeace -- piracy. governor martin o'malley is pushing congress to repeal a federal law, denying benefits to same-sex partners. o'malley is one of urging defendants to overturn the same- sex marriage acts. federal health benefits and family medical leave. o'malley has also pledged to sponsor a same-sex marriage bill in annapolis next year. police in montgomery county are looking for thieves targeting two elderly victims. the men that stole at gas stations, most recently have an 87-year-old woman. the men also stole the wallet of an 89-year-old man. a wave of new spam messages, targeting facebook accounts, is more than just a nuisance. it has left many people disturbed. >> reporter: the spam messages trick users into pasting links

in their web browser by advertising a free ipod shuffle. but the link actually floods a user's facebook account with links to graphic sex and violence. the contents spread further when friends click on the link, thinking they were posted on purpose. the social networking site says it has stopped most of the spam. but users -- should always be aware of suspicious content. facebook says it is working on security to prevent similar attacks. >> facebook says no user data or accounts were compromised by this. it is mild but overcast and damp. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is tracking first warning doppler radar. >> damp it is. can't be more moist than it is. but the rain temporarily is gone. but there's more rain out to the west. and we'll start seeing more shower activity overnight. in fact, when we open up, there's a lot more down to the south and southwest of us.

so we do have to deal with rain overnight. probably into maybe 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 on your thursday before things turn around. the low pressure will finally move off shore. and they'll get breezy and turn pretty chilly. tomorrow's high, only around the 50-degree mark. and tomorrow night, zip, back down below freezing once again. denise? >> all right. thank you, bob. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin, wjz traffic control. unfortunately, the traffic still continues to build. and it's definitely getting very heavy out there. northbound on the harrisburg expressway. heavy from shawan to belfast. and the delay on the top side inner loop, up to 30 minutes now, from the jones falls expressway to harford road. another 25 minutes from the west side inner loop from 95 to security boulevard. and the outer loop, also backing down there, from security boulevard to baltimore national pike. average speed at this point, about 35 miles per hour. some brake lights to watch out for. and as far as accidents go, in

east carolina university is whack open after being placed on lockdown when an armed man is spotted on campus. this morning, reports surfaced that a man with a gun was running near campus. police say they were spotted with surveillance cameras. there have been no reports of hospitals, injuries or arrests on campus. a mother is behind bars after her missing 1-year-old boy is found dead in missouri. the body of tyler dasher, born last year, was found in a wooded area -- about a mile away from his home. the cause of death has not been determined.

shelby dasher has not been arrested. a minnesota woman is thanking the driver who was behind her. he saved her life, after her car launched into an icy lake. liz collins reports on the miraculous rescue. >> just got done wrapping up tv interviews. >> reporter: he's used to being in front of a camera as a spokesman for the state patrol. but it's what happened right in front of sergeant jesse graybow and what he did about it that has him in the spotlight now. >> the vehicle is now anything from the -- going from the right lane to the left lane. >> reporter: seconds later, that car going more than 70 miles an hour, plunged into lake latoke a. >> best way i can describe it is like something out of dukes of hazard. >> reporter: sophia eversvick had suffered a seizure and lost control of her car on i-94 in alexandria. she wasn't moving and he soon learned sophia's door wasn't locked. >> it was sinking.

and i was afraid that we wouldn't be able to get inside. >> reporter: but the trooper broke a back window. >> and the trooper stayed just 15 seconds after pulling sophia out. the car sank. >> how lucky for me. i can't even imagine. i wouldn't be here today if he wasn't there. >> reporter: the day of the rescue, sophia turned 27. >> feels good to be part of something that turned out for the positive. >> reporter: an unforgettable birthday for everyone that day who met under an interstate bridge. >> every second counts. >> sophia, a nurse from florida, will meet sergeant grabow this weekend, to thank him for his heroic efforts. it's the season of gift giving. and they have something to share to those buying gifts for children. >> the safety commission says adults have a big role, too, when it comes to keeping kids safe. stricter regulations has made for safer toys. but the commission urges adults

here's a live look outside right now. looks like it should this time of year. but it's still very warm. >> it is warm. >> actually, today's temperatures are actually the normal high today is 57. that's where we are right now. but overnight's lows have been in the 50s. so pretty mild. take a look at radar. just few, very light echoes around the baltimore area. not a whole lot of rain. we've had rain this morning. about a third of an inch a lot

of spots. there's heavier stuff to the south of us and a lot more to the west of us. in fact, we've got a pretty good bunch of rain that is developing over west virginia, western maryland. and we'll see some of that rain moving into the area overnight. we're not done with the rain. it looks like it will probably last into tomorrow morning, before we start seeing some clearing. and there may be some heavier echoes from time to time. with 57. that that is really the normal high for the day. 100% humidity. because the dew point is 57 degrees. northwest winds at 7. barometer 29.73. and right now, it's rising. out to the west, 43 in oakland. in garrett county, tomorrow, there will probably be some snow shower activity because of colder air moving in. that's something you might want to keep in mind. 54 in cumberland. 55 in hagerstown. the warm spot, south of us, 66 in pax river. 70s in virginia. and probably thundershower activity down there later tonight. don't expect anything like that
