day of action. occupy wall street protestors cause chaos. >> more unrest as demonstrators enter the third month. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> the occupy wall street movement advances to the next level. derek valcourt with the future of the occupy movement here in baltimore. but we begin with randall pinkston at the nation's biggest protest in new york city. >> police arrested protestors in zuccotti park. where the occupy wall street protests started. one man's face was covered in blood when he was led away. several blocks away, officers

pushed riot gear. hundreds of protestors marched into lower manhattan to mark the two-month an verseaire -- anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. cutting off traffic and be blocking some people from getting to work. causing several confrontations. >> i don't know. >> it's global. >> i want to get to work. >> they should all get a job. >> step to the side! step to the side. >> protestors were hauled away. >> reporter: dozens were arrested. and several police officers were injured. but for the most part, the protests were peaceful. >> reporter: marchers wanted to shut down the financial district. but police set up barricades, only letting in workers with identification. the stock exchange opened for business without incident. demonstrators believed their protest of corporate greed and economic inquality, was still a success. >> right now, they have billions. and i have friends who are

sleeping on the streets. >> reporter: protestors plan to get their message out at subway stops and march on city hall in the evening. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> and at least 175 people were arrested during today's clashes. >> within the hour, a protest march is set to begin here in maryland, along the howard street bridge. right now, the occupy baltimore protest is in mceldon square. derek valcourt has more on the protest and the movement. >> reporter: they say they have no intention of taking down their campsite. and as protestors plan to marching the brooklyn bridge, protestors here say they will march across the howard street bridge. >> reporter: while cities across the country have camped down on occupy wall street sites. that kind of eviction has not happened here in baltimore, where occupy protestors have been living in their own tent city for six weeks.

mayor stephanie rawlings-blake says protestors have been ignoring rules at the campsite. but she would not specify how the city plan toss deal with the "occupy" movement. >> i have asked repeatedly that the tents be removed. and we're going to deal with it at a time of our choosing really. >> i don't think we'll be going anywhere. >> reporter: occupy protestors insist they will not budge from their spot, even in the face of police action. >> probably the time is coming that they'll have some action. i talked to the mayor and thanked her for keeping out of this so far. and the tents have got to go. but she also expressed interest about dialoguing with us in a way that sort of goes beyond the movement here. >> reporter: and more protestors are on the way. that's because a group from occupy wall street is marching from new york, down the i-95 corridor, as they move all the way to d.c. this weekend, they'll be stopping here in baltimore. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness

news. >> we are monitoring the activity at mceldon square and we'll bring you updates on the baltimore march as soon as it happens. attempting to assassinate the president. that's the charge facing the suspect who police say fired shots at the white house. vic is in the newsroom with new information on today's shooting. vic? >> reporter: a 21-year-old idaho man was just removed from court in pittsburgh. oscar ortega-hernandez had his hands free in court, but his feet were shackled. he will be brought to washington, d.c. to face charges. police believe hernandez fired at the living quarters friday night. they found an abandoned rifle inside. he was arrested tuesday. ortega-hernandez told the mother of his exfiance he thought he was jesus christ and the world was about to end. mary, back to you. >> ballistic glass stopped the bullet. and the president and first lady were not there at the time

of the shooting. two police officers ermt a guilt -- enter a guilty plea. they are charged with extortion and connection with the scheme involving majestic towing. the officers admit they took from majestic's owners. majestic is not an authorized towing company for the city. the officers face 25 years in prison. so far, 11 plor -- police officers have pled guilty. checking with baltimore county police. and the search continues for a rape suspect. this is a sketch. a 15-year-old girl says she was abducted and assaulted near woodlawn early this month. she was driven to an unknown location, where she says one man raped her. anyone with information is asked to call baltimore police. right now, it is still a mystery as to the source of the white powder and was what was

found in southwest baltimore. but the substance caused tense moments in south florida. >> reporter: breaking news from palm beach international airport tonight. a southwest airplane evacuated. >> reporter: as 137 passengers boarded a southwest airlines flight, a crewmember grabbed a tissue from the laboratory. millersville resident, shirley tindle was next. >> i grabbed a box. and all of this white stuff came towards him. he inhaled it. >> reporter: preparing for the worst. the hazmat team came in and the plane evacuated. >> just waiting to see what was going on. and then about 8 or 10 fire trucks, ambulances. >> reporter: passengers were left outside on the tarmac for hours, as crews determine the white substance was not dangerous. >> did some preliminary testing on the material, which would be considered to be inconclusive. and they sent the material down

to miami. >> reporter: passengers were then able to reboard the plane. >> they did say don't worry about it. you know, we're going to get you to baltimore. >> reporter: six hours late, flight 793 arrived in baltimore, with irritation, but no injuries. >> but everybody stayed pretty grumbled, then kind of stopped grumbling. >> reporter: and the two crewmembers were exposed to the white powder and went through a decontamination process. at bwi thurgood marshall airport, i'm andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> they say the description of the white substance sounds like it could be a product detect. well, if you're hitting the road for the holiday, you will definitely have some company. triple a says 42 million people plan to visit family or friends this thanksgiving. this is the highest number since the start of the recession. 90% of them are driving. high airfares are forcing many

united louisiana, all the way to the carolinas. ron lee has more. >> a strong, deadly storm system, with more than a dozen reported tornadoes tore across wednesday, from the carolinas to the gulf coast. >> reporter: three people were killed and five others injured, when a twister swept through a rural community. a mobile home was scooped up and thrown 300 yards. >> maybe another two minutes went by. and it touched down. it may have been on the ground. maybe two minutes, three minutes at the most. >> as soon as i seen it coming toward the house, we went to the back closet to try to avoid it. and started praying to the lord. >> and another uprooted a tree that came crashing down on an suv, killing the owner inside. >> this is just a freak accident. we had a very dry season up here in north georgia. and quite possibly could have been the heavy rains we got. might have loosened the earth, along with the really heavy winds we took during the storm. it could have been the precipitating factors that

we continue to follow occupy baltimore. inviting community groups to join in a live demonstration. the march is just about to get under way. wjz will continue to bring you all of the latest developments throughout the evening. >> a big day in california in the rulings on gay marriage. the california supreme court ruled that supporters of prop 8, which defines marriage as only being between one man and one woman, can defend a ballot in court, even if public officials refuse to do so. this means they fight over the constitutionality of same-sex marriage will continue. a lisbon court has denied a u.s. order. they want george wright returned to serve the rest of

his 15- to 30-year jail sentence for a murder in 1970. he was also part of a plane jacking. wright was four decades on the run but is now claiming to be a portuguese citizen. a soldier set to return to federal court today. weijia jiang is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: the arraignment of naher abdoe begins today. ashdoe appeared in waco, texas on the six charges, which includes trying to use a weapon of mass destruction on the army post. he was indicted last week by a federal grand jury, on five other charges. abdo has not entered a plea yet. prosecutors say they plan to try him on the other six charges. >> abdo could be sentenced to a life in prison if convicted. federal agents say they have discovered a major drug- smuggling tunnel along the u.s.-

mexico border. they say it's three feet wide. investigators seized more than three tons of marijuana. the street value of the drugs, more than $25 million. the tunnel links a warehouse in tijuana, mexico, with one in san diego, california. airports here are banning x- ray bod scanners after fears they could cause cancer. they are the same ones used in airports here in the u.s. tina kraus reports from london. >> reporter: european lawmakers say passengers could be risking more than their modesty, when they pass through these x-ray body scanners that reveal all. the e.u. is banning the naked scanners at airports across europe because of a possible cancer risk from the radiation they give off. >> well, i work with radiation. personally, i wouldn't want to have to go through that if i have a choice. >> reporter: some airports like london's heathrow have already removed the scanners because of complaints about invasion of privacy. but they're still being used in united states and tested in

airports around europe. >> i travel quite a lot. >> reporter: south african tina teart has been through the body scanner several times in america. she says the cancer concern will make her think twice now. >> definitely. definitely. >> reporter: u.s. radiation expert dr. david brenner says the scanner can deliver up to 20 times more radiation than previously thought, potentially increasing the risk of cancer. but scientists at england's health protection agency says the scanners are safe for flyers to pass through, as many as 5,000 times a year. >> reporter: they say the amount of radiation you get while flying is more than you would get in two or three trips through the body scanner. >> reporter: many doctors call the radiation worries an overreaction. >> you are at higher risk driving to the airport by a long shot than any risks you may have of cancer or even deaths from that particular machine. >> reporter: e.u. says -- the e.u. says it will consider lifting a ban on the scanner fist it gets

evidence they're considered safe. in london, tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> the full body scanners were introduced after a 24-year-old nigerian man hid plastic explosives in his underwear to try to blow up a plane in 2009. >> what started out as a normal day for three girls takes a terrifying turn. >> i'm sorry. hello? >> we're trapped under an elevator at high school. >> it happened at a high school in oklahoma. the three girls became trapped when they wandered through an open door for the elevator shaft. and it slammed shut and locked behind them. then the elevator started to come down on top of them. >> i pretty much thought that we were going to die. and me and my friends actually said goodbye to each other under there. >> it will take about 45 minutes for crews to rescue savannah and her friends. she did hurt her foot. and another girl was also hurt. they're both expected to be

okay. >> a delaware mother is facing charges after she lets her young son get behind the wheel. he isn't even close to the legal driving age. and jeremy tucker has the story. >> when they turn on the ignition and head out onto our road, we assume everyone who is driving is at least 16 years old. but along this road yesterday, a 9-year-old boy was driving himself here to riley brown elementary school. >> oh well. when i first heard about it, i couldn't believe it. i was shocked. i got a couple of phone calls. >> reporter: the boy's mom, 44- year-old tammy o'neill, has been charged with reckless endangering and endangering the welfare of a child. police say o'neill sat in the passenger seat while her 9-year- old son drove the the quarter mile from her apartment to the elementary school. it was a short drive, but a distance those who know o'neill and her son say could have killed them both. >> really shocked. i couldn't believe it.

a 9-year-old. did he know what he could have did to himself? he could have killed him. -- himself. i don't know what she was thinking. >> folks here say they always thought tammy was a good mother. it's an opinion that has now changed. >> actually, i think it's totally irresponsible. and i think she needs to be severely punished for that. >> reporter: we tried to talk to o'neill today. but we couldn't reach her. and folks who know tammy say they can't imagine what she was thinking. >> are you kidding me? never. never. i won't each think about it -- even think about it. no, never. >> reporter: police say o'neill told officers she has aloud -- allowed her son to drive since he was 5 years old. and we have been developing this story as occupy protestors gathered with community leaders for the howard street bridge downtown. meghan mccorkell is live downtown. >> reporter: you can see, there are several hundred people out here. we have been out here for an hour. we have been watching this crowd grow and grow. their speakers at the podium right now. and there's a lot of people

here's a live look outside now. sun, it's gone bye bye. look at the leaves. >> finally clearing out. which means it's going to be a cold night out there. temperatures back around the freezing mark. and even lower in many of the suburban areas. if you go out tonight, yeah, it's going to be a chilly night. but they'll be dry. all of the precip is dry. dew point down to 44 degrees. very dry air. 39% humidity. make the 44 feel like 35 if you're heading out. right now, the barometer on the way back up. 29.98 inches. 28, down to 28 in oakland right now. 41 in cumberland. there have been some snow showers in the higher elevation of garrett county. and a lot of the high elevations of virginia. some of the mountains, you know, over 4,000 feet. so they're really cold.

and they had some snow showers. 45 now in washington. and chilly, with light drizzle, ending near ocean city, only 39 now. locally, temperatures only in the low to mid-40s. warmest spots closer to the water, kent island and annapolis. northwest wind. as the front has gone through the area, taking the clouds with it. we'll clear out tonight. but the winds will slowly die down. it will be a very chilly night. once again, if you are heading out, take a winter wrap of some kind. moved through florida this morning. off the coast. now, all of that moisture is pretty much gone. colder, dryer air moving in. and because of the winds coming to us, the warm great lakes. we're getting lake-effect snow, western michigan. in the mountains, west virginia, around the buffalo area, north of erie, snow shower activity. just widely scattered stuff. very typical of a winter pattern. warm lakes, particularly in the early part of the winter, lakes are still warm. pick up that air and squeeze
