derek valcourt and meghan mccorkell are live with that. but we're going to start with derek on the howard street bridge. >> reporter: you have several hundred people out here now, marching across this bridge. this bridge, they say, an example of what is wrong with this country. they say it is in disrepair. and they say they could get a lot of jobs if they would be able to get back to work and put this bridge back in good repair. meanwhile, they say they are trying to send a message with this march that they need more jobs. that they are the 99%. and it is time to bridge the gap between the 99% and the top- earning, wealthy 1%. >> despite warnings that camping overnight at the inner harbor is illegal, occupy baltimore protestors spent another night there, though many in the city don't understand why. >> i had asked someone, you know, what are they doing over there? is that like occupy baltimore? and i said, yeah, that's our version. but they said, i don't see anybody doing anything. >> i think they've lost the protest. they're kind of protesting and hanging out, having a good

time. >> reporter: similar concerns voiced to wjz.com, where curt writes, just what 1% are they protesting? these people really don't make any sense. they're just being a nuisance to the working folk in torrance. jen asks when will mayor rawlings-blake get rid of this. on facebook, joshua wrote, as long as it is a peaceful protest, i think she should stay out of it. >> we continued to inform them, routinely, that camping is prohibited. and with hopes that we'll have some resolution to that particular issue. >> if it comes to the point where the cops are just soldiers, they follow orders. they come down here in riot gear. i'm fully prepared for that. >> reporter: at the occupy baltimore encampment, some say they are not sure what will happen if their movement gets evicted from mceldon square. >> that's an interesting question. we'll have to cross that bridge when we get to it. >> reporter: speaking of crossing the bridges, these folks here have already begun

to cross their bridge. they are now crossing over several hundred of them, making their way all the way over to the far side of the howard street bridge. we are live at the corner of howard street and north baltimore. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> complete coverage continues now live, with meghan mccorkell. megan is also speaking with protestors in north baltimore. what single where you are? >> reporter: we're right on the bridge, right in the middle of the protests. several hundred people marching across this bridge right now. i'm with wade brown from the labors union. wade, why was it so important for you to be a part of this today? >> it's so important for us to come out and represent our communities. we need jobs. it's 15% unemployment rate. and we represent that. that's why we're here today. >> is it -- heartening to see how many people are out here with you? >> actually, no. because there are demands. we need jobs. people are really starving. people are really hurting. and if we don't come out and

let them know that we're not going to stand for this anymore and that we represent the minority, they'll never do anything. >> what message do you hope this sends? >> i'm praying that this sends the message that we're unemployed, we're starving, but we're ready, willing and able to do the work necessary. they give us the jobs. we'll get it done. >> reporter: so many people have that same message. again, several hundred people marching across the bridge right now. they are all staying on the sidewalk. it's not affecting traffic. they have people kind of guiding the protests right now. they plan to march to opposite side of the bridge. and then turn around and march back again. we are right in the middle of the protests. and we'll have a lot more on this, tonight at 11:00. for now, reporting live, i'm meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> and thank you to the protestors who talked as well. complete coverage continues now with randall pinkston. he has the latest on the chaos in new york. police arrested protestors in zuccotti park, where the

occupy wall street movement started. one man's face was covered in blood when he was led away. several blocks away, officers in riot gear pushed back protestors. hundreds of protestors marched swolower manhattan to mark -- into lower manhattan to mark the anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. demonstrators cut off traffic and blocked some people from getting to work. causing several confrontations. >> i don't know. >> it's global. >> i want to get to work. >> they should all get a job. >> reporter: protestors who did not move were arrested and hauled away. >> reporter: dozens of demonstrators were arrested and several police officers were injured. but for the most part, the protests were peaceful. >> we're not that many people out here. most people express themselves and they went back about their business. >> reporter: marchers wanted to shut down the financial district but police set up

barricades, only letting in workers with identification. the stock exchange opened for business without incident. demonstrators believed their protests of corporate greed and economic inequality was still a success. >> right now, they have billions. and i have friends who are sleeping on the street. >> reporter: protestors plan to get their message out at subway stops and march on city hall in the evening. rantal pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. -- randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> protestors are holding actions in several major cities around the world. we'll have the latest on the los angeles protest, coming up new at 5:30. state police stage a child pornography sting. investigators say 24-year-old robert hudson tried to exchange child pornography imagings with an undercover state trooper. the two set up a meeting at the library, where hudson was then arrested. he is facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted. a former stevenson

university lacrosse player, involved in a sex tape scandal. he admits he posted an intimate tape online as revenge against his ex-girlfriend. wjz is live on the stevenson campus. mike hellgren has the investigation into the viral video that is getting nationwide attention. mike? >> reporter: mary, the former lacrosse player here says he's sorry for posting that video. but that's not enough to keep him out of legal trouble. >> it's been called the exfrom hell. christopher scott faces charms in connection with a sex video he made with his former girlfriend, then posted online as revenge when they broke up. police say he made that video on campus, and it has students here buzzing. >> if you break up, it's move on. don't post it and try to get back at it just because he broke up with you. >> if i was in his shoes, i have taken it to the extent that he did.

i wouldn't have felt like, oh, maybe somebody bad can come out of this. >> reporter: according to the criminal complaint wjz obtained, scott said he was depressed over his breakup and was trying to be hateful and admitted he was sorry. >> reporter: the university would not comment on the case but pointed out, scott has not been a student here are more than a year. >> reporter: scott's ex, confronted him after getting harassed and losing her job over it. she said he continually tried to get her to do things sexually with some of his friends. police confiscated his computer at his home. they say he also found marijuana and child porn that drew strong reaction from neighbors there. >> that's just awful. i feel so sorry for that girl. >> reporter: this video has now spread to dozens of websites and tens of thousands of people have watched it. >> reporter: when police initially went to scott's home in pennsylvania, his mom answered the door. coming up tonight at 6:00, i'll tell you what happened next.

reporting live at stevenson, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> scott is free on bail. and the charges are misdemeanors. the mother of one of the alleged victims in the penn state sex abuse scandal is speaking out publicly for the first time. vic is in the newsroom with her shocking allegations. >> the counselor and principal tried to cover up abuse by jerry sandusky. the new allegations come from the motor of child listed as victim 1. sandusky allegedly took the boy out of class, without permission, and sexually assaulted him. but when the mother threatened to take police action, she was warned not to call police. >> i said, i will call the police right now. they said, no, i needed to think about the ramifications what b what would happen if i did that. >> the keystone central school district says it cannot comment because of the ongoing investigation against sandusky.

smith's battle with pancreatic cancer. >> kai, in the same matter of fact way, ron smith announced he is foregoing chemotherapy. but devoted listeners say they can't help but get emotional. >> a few weeks, i've been feeling, you know, not well. >> wval radio show host learned the reason why is stage 4 pancreatic cancer. on thursday, he told listeners, he's decided not to continue chemotherapy treatment, calling a second round futile. >> so the idea of some miracle, with a stage 4 pancreatic cancer, well, there isn't going to be any miracle. and this is the decision that was reached and agreed upon by everyone concerned. >> if that's his choice, you know, then let's all be there, you know, and cheer for him. >> reporter: the news brought

tears to yolanda's eyes. she called smith an icon. >> i grew up with richard sher, al sanders and all of those. he's been around -- i remember when i was younger, my father would listen to him. >> it's his impact on journalism. and this town has been amazing. >> reporter: oncologists say pancreatic cancer has been difficult to treat. >> there's no way of predicting how long i'm going to be functioning. so we're sort of playing it by ear from this time forward. i'll be on the air as i can. and as long as i can. and i guess that about covers it. >> reporter: and smith also says he's opting for paleative care-- pauleateive -- palliative care.

we continue to follow breaking news in west baltimore. occupy protestors are marching on the howard street bridge. we'll is there live now. meghan mccorkell is speaking with demonstrators. >> reporter: and right now, we are right in the middle of the howard street bridge. as you can see, hundreds of people are up here. they are lining the bridge right now. they have got american flags. they've got signs. they are waving to the traffic below. and there really is so many groups out here. right now, i'm with lee smith from local 33. lee, tell me, why is it so important for you to be out here today? >> it's important because you need jobs. i work for an organization called community churches united. we're coming together to make sure that local developments, local community members are working on local job sites. they're closing our schools down. if we don't have jobs, what are

the winds, still a bit of a factor now. they will be calming down late tonight. if you're heading out, it will take some kind of wrap. gloves, scarf. it's going to feel pretty cold. temperatures have dropped down as low as 28 in oakland. 39 the other side of the mountain there in cumberland. and we're at 43. cloudy skies, even light drizzle last hour. so it's really dropped the temperature there. they actually will go up a little bit and then cool down later. 44, elkton. 45 in washington. locally, temperatures in the low to mid-40s. it will be a chilly night. our normal high now is around 56. so today's high was only in the mid- to upper 40s. northwest wind is beginning to come down a little bit. earlier, we in wind gusts to 65 miles an hour. lighter winds and clear skies, it will get pretty cold. to our south this morning, we had pretty good rain in the carolinas in portions of virginia. but for the most part, it slid right southeast of the baltimore washington area. there was snow shower activity

in the mountains to our west. and late this afternoon, still a few of those flakes falling across the highest peaks there. garrett county, 2,000 feet up, it's still coming down a little bit. to the north, another ban of snow activity, from michigan over toward ontario and western new york. pretty much lake-effect stuff. winds already coming off the lakes. lakes are warm. cold air picks that moisture up. squeeze its out in the form of snow showers as it goes up a couple hundred feet. here in the maryland area, cleared out pretty niceful a -- nice. a clear and cold night. not going to last that long. cool air tonight into tomorrow, gets pushed off to the north. this moves off. winds go back to the southwest. and a warmup begins saturday into sunday. looks like a nice day for football here in baltimore. and sunday afternoon. west winds on the bay. 5 to 10 knots, tomorrow.

meghan mccorkell has the very latest for us. meghan, big crowd out there for us as well. >> yes. several hundred people out here, mary. and right now, they're marching off the bridge, after marching on top of it. and they were waving to crowds below. and this is susan. listen. tell me why it was so important for you to be out here today. >> because i know we need to build these jobs for baltimore city, as well as build our bridges, give people jobs that they have lost back. the no cuts on the medicare and medicaid. and that's why i'm out here because i know we need them. >> reporter: how much is everybody hurting right now? >> a lot. a whole lot. i can only imagine. it's a whole lot. >> what message do you hope this sends? and are you heartened by seeing several hundred people out here tonight. >> well, we hope this message gets back to congressmen and the president so they know not to cut medicare, and medicaid. >> great. thank you very much. we'll let you get back to

thank you. we'll update you on the results and have much more on the protests coming up at 6:00. >> the controversial and popular alcoholic drink four loko is being targeted again by state leaders. >> reporter: it's been called binge in a can. and liquid cocaine. but family and friends of courtney spury call it a killer, after the 21-year-old drank four loko and crashed her truck into a telephone pole. >> she blacked out within 30 minutes of having the alcoholic beverage. >> reporter: one serving contains the equivalent alcohol of four beers. >> if you would brink one or two cans of four loko, you wouldn't feel it because the energy drink kept you awake. >> reporter: they supported the effort that led to removal of caffeine from the can because of the dangers. >> enormous amounts of alcohol poisoning. increased car crashes. >> reporter: despite the

backlash, gimble says it is still as popular as ever. and others are poisoned. >> they all flavored. same amount of california alcohol -- alcohol. >> we wanted to change it from maximum, having five drinks in a can to having two drinks in the can. >> reporter: drinking one can of any of these drinks, gimble says would put a 180-pound man over the legal limit of .18. >> when teenagers drink, they'll use a beer bong. >> that's why he believes changing four loko to two loko could save lives. >> and the attorney general is also pushing for the drinks to display the number of alcohol servings on the can. and he wants those cans to be refillable so people don't have to drink them all in one sitting. >> maryland's attorney general is one of 34 nationwide that support these new measures. baltimore county police need your help, identifying this man, suspected of lobbying

a bank in initous -- robbing a bank in towson. investigators say the man walked into the bank, took money from a teller after she said he had a -- he said he had a weapon. anybody who recognizes the man in the photo should give county police or metro crimestoppers a call. a fierce string of storms is blamed for at least six deaths across the southeastern united states. a suspected tornado flattened homes near rock hill, south carolina. twisters, strong winds and hail, pounded communities from north carolina all the way to the gulf coast. crews are now on the ground, trying to assess the full extent of the damage. the man accused of firing shotsa the -- shots at the white house is now charged with attempted assassination. he appeared before a judge today, as investigators look for a motive. danielle nottingham has the latest for wjz from washington. 21-year-old oscar ramiro ortega-hernandez, made his first court appearance in pittsburgh. he is charged with trying to

assassinate the president or presidential staff. investigators say the idaho pan drove to an -- man drove to an area near the white house friday and fired an ak-47-style weapon from his car. one bullet hit the exterior of the mansion. another round cracked the second floor window of the first family's living quarters. authorities caught up with ortega-hernandez, five days later in a hotel lobby about an hour outside pittsburgh. a front desk officer recognized his picture and called police. >> the white house is not commenting on who is at home at the time. the president and first lady are on their way home to hawaii. >> authorities are examining ortega's mental state. idaho businessman, monty mccall, recently met ortega- hernandez and said he compared president obama to the anti- christ. >> he seemed very sincere in what he believed.

but he did seem very, rather troubled. >> reporter: others say he had become troubled in recent months and told his family he believed that the world was going to end. if he's convicted, he could face life in prison. >> in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> ortegaorteg hernandez will decide if he should stay in jail until trial. take a look. averages say a tunnel linked warehouses in san diego and tijuana. and was responsible for transporting large amounts of drugs. 17 tons of marijuana were confiscated during that raid. so far, two men have been arrested in connection with the discovery of the tunnel. a terrifying situation for three girls at a school in oklahoma city. they were about to be crushed under a falling elevator, when they placed these 911 calls.

>> elevator. >> i'm sorry. >> oh, god. >> hello? >> we're trapped under an elevator, at compton high school. >> students say they heard the girl screaming. they became trapped when they accidentally wandered into an open elevator shaft. the elevator stopped, though, a foot away from the 6th graders. one of them said they thought they were going to die. >> me and my friends actually said goodbye to each other under there. i just remember closing my eyes and feeling numb and then not being able to move or speak or breathe. >> 12-year-old savannah said she wedged her boot between the floor and the elevator to try to stop the car. it took about 45 minutes for the three girls to be pulled to safety. they were all treated for just minor injuries. right now, investigators are trying to identify a mysterious white powder that caused a scare on a southwest airlines flight, headed to baltimore. andrea fujii has the tense

moments on board. >> reporter: this breaking news from palm beach international airport. tonight, a southwest airplane evacuated, as 137 passengers boarded a southwest airlines flight wednesday afternoon, from west palm beach to baltimore, a crewmember grabbed a tissue from the lavatory. millersville resident shirley kindle saw what happened next. >> i was out of kleenex. and all of this white stuff cames towards him. he inhaled it. he said it was all over the floor. >> reporter: preparing for the worst, a hazmat team was called in and the plane evacuated. >> there were about eight or 10 fire trucks, ambulances. >> reporter: passengers were left outside on the tarmac for hours, as crews determined the white substance was not dangerous. >> did some preliminary testing on the material, which we considered to be inconclusive. and they sent the material down to miami. >> reporter: passengers were then able to reboard the plane.

>> they did say, don't worry about it. you know, we're going to get you to baltimore. >> reporter: six hours late, flight 793 arrived in baltimore, with some irritations but no injuries. >> did everybody stay pretty grumbled, then stopped grumbling. >> reporter: two crewmembers were exposed to the white powder and went through a de decontamination process. at the airport, i'm andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> the manufacturer of the tissue on board the plane says the description of the white substance sounds like it could be a product defect. well, a major part of the thanksgiving weekend is black friday shopping. but there is a growing trend against those early openings. a best buy employee has started an online campaign against the store's midnight opening. this comes a few days after a target employee started a similar petition against his employer. they want a return to more

save. for more information, go to wjz.com. scroll down the right-hand side of the page. and click on our special section. the fbi says one of its most wanted terrorists may be hiding in western massachusetts. daniel andreas is wanted for alleged bombings in san francisco in 2003. the fbi says he has ties to animal rights extremist groups. a $250,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest. in colorado, a man ran a stop sign. he was broadsided by another vehicle. the impact of crash threw his three daughters from the vehicle. that's when two fort carson soldiers on scene jumped into action, began treating the victims, saving their lives. the three girls are in critical condition. but doctors are hopeful they will make a full recovery. the bicentennial of the war of 1812 could be a profitable anniversary for baltimore.
