through maryland on their way to washington, d.c., to deliver their message to congress. wjz is live in mceldon square, where occupy baltimore movement is in place. mike hellgren has more on what that is. >> well, denise, while a lot of other cities are pushing protestors out, the encampment here is thriving. and the people headed to d.c.,a you said, there are about two dozen or so. maybe 30. well, we caught up with them in harford county. >> reporter: from the birth place of occupy movement erupted, some were already there way to maryland. >> we started off in zuccotti park. >> reporter: they started last week. some barefoot. and their travels through maryland have included a few bumps in the road. >> we were outside of one general store, where people were purchasing items. then the owner asked us to leave. so that, you know, that kind of struck a nerve with some people. and it wasn't great for morale.

>> it's a little rough. but it's not anything to really worry about. you just gotta keep pushing. push through the pain. >> reporter: the entire journey is about 230 miles. many in the loosely organized movement are upset over bank bailouts. the lack of job and lack of action in washington, as they pushed back, so have police, with raifts from coast to coast -- arrests from coast to coast. but baltimore has largely remained peaceful. despite efforts to convict in mceldon square. it will be one walk and they should get a warm welcome. >> they're actually out there, putting in the work. getting blisters on their feet. they are stars in my eyes. superstars. >> reporter: and they said overnight. last night in haf are they grace -- havre de grace. they are expected here in baltimore now sometime tomorrow. and they are keeping people up to date on twitter. reporting live at mceldon square, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, about 200 people

marched across the howard street bridge in baltimore yesterday as part of the occupy protest. less than a week after being fired, more bad news for joe paterno. his song says paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer. scott paterno says his father is undergoing treatment and doctors are confident he'll make a full recovery. diagnose was made last week for a bronchial illness. paterno was fired as head coach of penn state after not filing a formal report about sexual abuse to police. he only told his boss about the allegations. paterno says he regrets not doing more. and two people have come forward, claiming they were molested by an assistant basketball coach at syracuse university. >> reporter: they have placed assistant basketball coach bernie fine on administrative leave. two former ball boys accuse

them of molesting teens at syracuse university. 39-year-old bobby davis was the first to come forward. he said the sexual contact started in 1984, when he was only 12 years old and lasted until he was 27. davis is now publicly telling his story. >> first thing he'd start rubbing my leg. and he'd sit next to me and rub my leg. and just gradually put his hand down my pants. >> davis's stepbrother and claiming he was sexually abused by fine. and the investigation is in its recall stages. >> syracuse university said it conducted its own investigation into the matter in 2005. but the allegations were unfounded. bernie fine just released a statement, calling the allegations, patently false. it's a case being closely watched by animal abuse advocates. twin brothers are back on trial for allegedly setting the dog back on fire. the dogularity died -- dog later died. weijia jiang has the latest.

>> reporter: advocate sat in court with us all day long. they say a conviction in this case would mean so much more than just justice for one dog. it would serve as protection for all animals that might be abused. in may 2009, this pit bull, known as phoenix, was set on fire, left to die in baltimore street, burned so badly, she had to be euthanized. friday, steps for a new trial for the 19 brothers accused of killing her. travers and tremain johnson entered the court in shackles. both held on unrelated charges, including drugs, and attempted burglary. the pair had already been tried once before in the phoenix case, but the judge declared a mistrial. >> reporter: johnson's first trial ended in a hung jury in february. a single holdout could not be convinced they were the ones to start the fire. >> reporter: but animal -- they could not be convinced. the mayor established an anti- animal abuse task force as a result, the first of its kind

in the country. >> we hope that there is a good verdict in the case. but either way, this case has brought enormous attention to animal abuse here in our city. and we'll be here next week. >> reporter: during the pretrial process, the judge ruled defense attorneys will be permitted to call on a new expert who will testify about surveillance video taken at the scene. prosecutors argue two people running away from the dog are the johnsons. experts will dispute that. outside the courthouse, the twins' mothers declined to comment on camera. but tells wjz, her boys are innocent. >> reporter: the judge who also presided said the jury pool would usually be 40 people. but it's nearly doubled because of the high publicity in this case. jury selection begins on monday. for now, we're live, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> once the jury is selected, the trial is expected to last 4 to 5 days. more charges are filed against a man accused of being

a police impersonator. monique griego has more on the suspect and the charges against him. >> reporter: well, denise, a joint investigation by baltimore city and baltimore county police resulted in a host of charges. 18-year-old walter is charged with impersonation, handgun charges and theft. police say he had a gun and radio, while working his job as a private security officer. investigators also say he told his employer, he was a cadet with a city plement. and when police -- police department. when police searched his home, they found a bulletproof vest, strobe light and other police items. >> reporter: oliver is a former member of the police explorer program with both city and county police. right now, police on the university of maryland campus are looking for a student who was robbed at knife point. >> reporter: it was this time last year that the university of maryland sua -- saw a robbery on campus. detectives there say this kind

of crime is rare. >> reporter: minutes before midnight, two masked men approached the university of maryland student near a dark parking lot yesterday on campus. they had a knife. the victim had cash and electronics. he was robbed. >> i feel like if i saw some masked men, i'd probably just run away. >> reporter: now, as university police are searching for suspects, the campus is on alert. >> if something doesn't seem right. if you see some individuals that don't really kind of fit in with what you'd expect to see on a college campus, heading the other direction. >> i'm not that concerned. but i think i probably should be more concerned. >> reporter: police sent text messages and e-mails to students this morning, telling them about the crime that happened close to cecil hall and a warning to be careful. >> it was a couple of days ago. between like 11:00 to 3:00 in the morning. and cecil hall is not far from there. >> the last time maryland saw this type of crime on campus was a year ago. almost to the date. police say with the holidays

handle the cincinnati bengals? sports director mark viviano joins us now with ray lewis's injury and our expert panel with their predictions. >> we'll start with ray lewis, vic. he has a foot injury. he missed practice. that is something to factor in with a panel of experts as we look ahead to the matchup with cincinnati. one final full practice in owings mills. without the team's top tackler, an emotional leader, ray lewis. the team is sharing very little information on information on his injury. but coach john harbaugh was quick to point out that louis may still play. he's quick to overcome injuries throughout his play. >> that's a louis. and the injury is not any kind of a serious, serious thing, where it's career threatening. i think i saw a report that it was career-threatening at this point. >> reporter: the cincinnati bengals have more issues than the ravens and our panel of experts likes the ravens'

president obama orders immigration officials to stop deporting illegal immigrants in baltimore. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren explains, baltimore is a test city for a new policy. pat? >> that's right, vic. baltimore and denver are the two test cities that will look at the obama policy that restricts deportations, only to people with criminal records. >> reporter: this action by the president is more far-reaching for the baltimore immigrant

community than the dream of in- state tuition for students here illegally. president obama is testing a policy that freezes deportation for those with no criminal records. that puts about 85% of cases on hold. crowds of people in the u.s. illegally, stage demonstrations like this one, protesting u.s. immigration laws. this new policy has imgrailings lawyers -- immigration lawyers here rejoicing. >> reporter: of course, from a maryland perspective, it's great. because now you have a law enforcement, financial resources, everything being focused where it needs to be focused most, which is to try and deal with committed criminals. >> reporter: state delegate pat mcdonogh tells wjz was picked because it -- baltimore was picked because it is considered a sawrchght -- sanctuary city. >> reporter: they felt baltimore was not complying with the law. that baltimore already had a policy of not arresting this 85

to 90%. and as a result, they felt that baltimore city, which is a sanctuary city, was violating federal law. now, obama is saying, no, it's okay to do that. the federal government agrees with you. and the congress believes he's violating the law. >> reporter: while congress hashes out its own issues, the test policies start here december 4th. >> reporter: and that pilot program runs for 7 weeks, after with which, it could be expanded in january. reporting live now, i'm pat warren. >> fewer than 27% of the cases involve people with criminal records. it is the opportunity for people. participating in the macy annual thanksgiving day parade. and some students are doing just that. andrea fujii spoke with two of them. >> reporter: it kicks off the holiday season. the macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york city. one of the highlights of the show...

the dancers and cheerleaders of spirit america. and delaney high school seniors, caitlin walther and summer hall were chose tone cheer with them. -- chosen to cheer with them. >> i was excited to get a chance to be in the parade and go to new york for six days. >> reporter: the group is made up of about 2,000 high schoolers and middle schoolers nationwide. delaney varsity cheer captains, both applied for the opportunity. >> it's a big honor because a lot of people don't get chosen or don't have the opportunity to go to this big event. >> reporter: in all, six maryland students are going, including four from carroll county. they've already learned the minute and a half routine. next, they leave on saturday, to practice with the entire group and shake off their nerves. ♪ [ music ] >> i just hope that i don't mess up. because it is in front of the whole country. but i'm really excited, too. >> reporter: 90 seconds of doing what they love for the nation to see.

live look outside right now. beautiful evening out there for friday. >> chilly, yes. heading out to take a winter coat or something. it's cold out there. only 37 now. and it's going to get a little colder before the night is heading up. but there's no wind to deal with. that's a big, big plus. take a look at temps around the state. we're at 37. cold spot, 32. oakland. but ocean city at the airport there, away from the beach. they have dropped to a pretty formidable 43 degrees. 43 over at national airport in washington. 41 up in elkton. and 38 up in hagerstown. locally, temperatures in the 30s to around the 40-degree mark.

43, annapolis, kent island. and by the water, it certainly is mild. 37 in columbia. very little wind. we won't have much to be dealing with in the form of wind. winds will start going to the west. as this cold high pressure moves offshore. the winds are always clockwise. so that means the winds come back to the southwest tomorrow. once that high moves off the coast, that will bring in mild air. look at these temperatures. 50, atlanta. 54, 54. 48, chicago. minneapolis at 47. 10 degrees colder. that milder air out here in the midwest and the plains, moves in our direction. 60 now in denver. pretty nice. stor in miami. same as phoenix as you can see. l.a. at 61. boston at 42. the cold spot up in northern tier there. 27 now in bismarck. and that's where there is light snow. a little snow in minnesota north of minneapolis. and snow. there could be pretty good amounts.

natalie wood is being reopened. and this morning, the yacht captain on board the night she died is telling reporters he lied to investigators. dennis davern now blames woods' husband, robert wagner for her death. after a night of heavy drinking with actor christopher walken, davern says that she and wagner had a fight and she went angrily into the woods and didn't come out. >> i just want the truth to come out. >> the coroner ruled it a drowning death. >> we're going to follow up on the leads we have, re-interview some people, interview some new people, talk to people and reevaluate some of the evidence. >> reporter: wood was 43 years old when she died. the three-time oscar nominee, who starred in such classic as miracle on 34th street, rebel without a cause and west side

story. >> i feel pretty, oh, on pretty ♪ >> reporter: she had a stormy relationship with wagner. they divorced and remarried. a spokesperson for wagner says he fully supports the new investigation. in los angeles, bigat bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. the report ruled her death an accidental drowning, speculating that she play-off slipped off the yacht while trying to step aboard a small, inflatable boat. second similar type of tragedy in the last decade. >> reporter: well, vic, the woman's basketball coach and a top assistant are killed in a plane crash. the plane went down near perryville, arkansas. coach budkey and miranda serna were on a trip. national transportation safety board is sending investigators to the scene. the crash is the second major tragedy for the sports program in about a decade. in january 2001, 10 men affiliated with the men's

basketball team, died in a colorado plane crash. >> reporter: oklahoma state has canceled the women's games tonight and tomorrow. eight days after being kidnapped in his hometown of venezuela, washington nationals catcher returned to d.c., after a dramatic rescue. monique griego has more on the traumatic ordeal. >> reporter: just days after being rescued from kidnappers in venezuela, washington nationals catcher, wilson ramos was back in d.c. to thank his fans. >> i just want to say thanks and have fun for your phrase and -- praise and your support. >> reporter: the harrowing experience began overnight. he was in his hometown to play winter ball. that's when four men kidnapped him at gunpoint. as investigators search for clues, the nationals team, including general manager, mike rizzo, waited and worried. >> a lot of people were sitting on their hands, waiting for information. it was very, very difficult. >> reporter: fans in washington held vigils, along with his

friends back home, who pleaded for his safe return. two days later, their prayers were answered. after a dramatic gunfight, ramos was rescued. commandos also arrested six of his 10 alleged kidnappers. it didn't take long for word to get back to rizzo. >> i get emotional when i talk about it now. it's one of our own. he is a family member. >> reporter: despite his ordeal, ramos' focus already seems to be back on baseball. >> i'm happy to be here. happy to be with my family. see see you in spring training. >> reporter: and despite everything that happened to him, ramos still plans to return to venezuela. >> it is believed the kidnappers planned to hold ramos for ransom. police arrest a man they blame for a string of robberies in baltimore county. 25-year-old michael mal pass. police say he's behind the series of armed robberies. gas stations and convenience

stealing tons of fish. it means some species might disappear. our increased demand means more fish come from overseas. but a government watchdog group warns of imported seafood from asia. >> imported seafood is not safe to eat. >> reporter: wjz obtained this video from a food safety watchdog group. you're looking at dirty, contaminated water, sewage from these homes on stilts, flows directly into a river that feeds an overcrowded fish pond. >> you packed millions of fish into cages and to nets. and in order to keep the fish healthy, you dump a lot of animal drugs. many of those drugs are not approved in the united states. >> reporter: those allegations are backed up in this government seafood safety report. it found that imported seafood may contain drug residues that can cause cancer. it also found, in china, for example, 98% of seafood processing facilities are not inspected by the fda.

while two-thirds of american facilities are expected. despite the disparity and oversight, the national fisheries institute defends the safety of imported seafood. >> unfortunately, this is part of a fake seafood safety scare. >> if you saw it say imported from china, for example, you would have no problem eating it and feeding it to your family. >> absolutely not. and i do. >> as the debate rages, claude anderson thinks he found the answer. raising his own fish on maryland's eastern shore. >> how is what you're doing here different than what they're doing overseas? >> overseas, they're raising their fish in the contaminated sewer water. >> sewer water? >> that's right. >> the fish that we're buying in supermarkets is raised in supermarkets, you're telling me? >> they have human waste and animal waste in this country. >> reporter: inside, you'll find a million pounds of clean, healthy tilapia. but his way is more expensive than cheaper, imported fish.

raging wildfire continues to threaten reno. firefighters say that 20 homes have been lost as the blazes spread to 2,000 acres. one death has been attributed to the wildfire. a 30-year-old man suffered a heart attack while fighting the wildfire. in tonight's wjz healthwatch, the fda has revoked approval of avistan. the fda says the drug should no longer be used in advanced breast cancer patients because there is no proof that it extends lives. this is the best-selling cancer drug and is used to treat certain forms of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer. military kids known as brack. but eight large cargo planes were taken away from the air national guard. now, mike schuh has the first of its kind mission. >> reporter: it is about half

specialist this week. and today missed his third straight practice. the team is not speaking of the specifics of the injury. he played in seattle sunday. and watch louis here. -- lewis here. joule see his foot with an awkward right twist to it. don't if that did it. coach john harbaugh said today, he doesn't consider the lewis injury a serious one and has not ruled out the linebacker just yet. but the backup will be ready. >> i think it's something he could play with possibly. but we are very confident in our linebackers. and confident in our defense. >> young guys are going going to have to step in. and hopefully it won't be a letdown on sunday. if it's any consolation. he has a knee injury. and they have already lost their top defensive player.
