important programs will be triggered automatically. just moments ago, a fired up president obama spoke. >> one way or another, we will be trimming the deficit by a total of at least $2.2 trillion over the next 10 years. that's going to happen. one way or another we have $1 trillion locked in. and either congress comes up with $1.2 trillion which so far they've failed to do or the sequester kicks in and these automatic cuts will occur. danielle nottingham reporting on why the super committee could not reach a deal and what it means. >> reporter: with just hours to spare, some super committee members headed behind closed doors in search of a last minute deal. but in the end, the panel of six republicans and six democrats could not agree on how to slash $1.2 trillion from the deficit. each party is blaming the other

for not compromising enough on one big issue, taxes. >> senator john kerry says the democrats did offer an 11th hour proposal. >> that would have taken the most contentious issue off the table and we could have i think reached agreement as we did on so many of the other parts of this. >> reporter: but the gop rejected it. >> our democrats were not willing to cut a dollar would raising taxes. >> reporter: for two months, members of the super committee have been trading proposals and negotiating. the obama administration did not play a direct role in the talk. but as the deadline looms, the president spokesman pushed lawmakers to get back to work. >> instead of pointing fingers and playing the blame game. congress should act. >> now automatic spending cuts are set to kick in in 2013. but lawmakers will likely spend the next year looking for ways to prevent them from taking e if -- effect.

the pentagon alone faces to get cuts. danielle nottingham. wjz news. >> investors did not have a positive reaction to the super committee's failure to reach a deal. nasdaq also took a hit. frankic calls for help from a popular maryland couple. >> reporter: the couple was trapped in their home talking with energy dispatchers as firefighters tried to rescue them. a warning, some of the 911 calls are tough to listen to. >> reporter: both beloved school principals died in a fire. donald dialed 911 after a fire alarm went off in the middle of night. >> who's on fire? >> my house. the whole house is on fire. >> is a door open where you both can get out. >> yeah.

>> leave the house now. >> the fire is raging. >> reporter: seconds go by before donald responds to the dispatchers questions. >> do you have everybody with you? >> yeah, just my house. >> are you able to get you both out of the house? mr.donald. >> reporter: the patterson had put bars over their windows including their bedrooms one. they were fearful of recent break-ins in the neighborhood. these bars trapped the couple inside as firefighters rushed to the scene. donald is heard one last time on the 911 call. >> [screams ] help, help. >> reporter: seconds later firefighters arrive at the patterson's home. >> they can't get to him? >> donald and jenny patterson both died of smoke inhalation, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. vic. >> mary, thank you. hundreds turned out for their funeral including many of their

former students. right now baltimore county police are looking for solid leads after a string of fires. jessica cartalia is live with more. >> reporter: four goodwill stores have been hit. the most recent was at the cocky sville store. the townsend goodwill was robbed november 11 and 16th. the two robberies are likely related. police are now investigating possible connections. >> thank you jessica, if you have any information you are asked to call police. an investigation is underway after a dead body was found inside baltimore's world trade center. investigators have said the deaths are suspicious but have not revealed how the two died.

state senator curry will face investigation. wjz is live. derek valcourt explains the committee received a formal request for an investigation. >> reporter: the request arrived today, and the investigation will kick off today. convincing his colleagues in the legislature that he acted ethically will be a lot harder. curry will now have to plead his ethical innocence before the joint committee on legislative ethics. 12 colleagues, six from the house and six from the senate which will investigate if curry acted unethically when he voted on legislation that directly benefited shoppers and most importantly when he failed five years in a row to report his paid relationship with shoppers on financial ethic forms as

required. after the investigation, the joint committee makes a recommendation to the full senate which then decides on possible punishment ranging from a reprimand to expulsion. >> we feel that they are ethical violation aepbs that the -- violation and that the senate needs to send a strong message. >> reporter: princeton says with curry 22 years in the legislature and friendships he's made there it's possible his colleagues may excuse his behavior. >> on the other hand, they may also recognize that this makes the general assembly as a whole look pretty bad. >> reporter: senator curry will have the opportunity to testify before the ethics committee with his attorney present. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. derek thank you. so far no dates have been set for the hearing. when maryland's first all

electronic toll road the inner county connector opens tomorrow morning. >> reporter: this landmark road will open at 6:00 tomorrow and it's not going to be cheap if you want to take it. >> there's no stopping to pay the tolls just roll underneath the electronic eyes on the icc and the state charges your easy pass. the east-west toll way connects i65 with i270. you enter south of the county line. it follows decades of fighting . >> in some ways it's more important for the baltimore metro area than the washington metro area. because it connects montgomery county which has been one of the economic engines of the state to vwi thurgood marshall

it is just before 6:30, 50 degrees with some drizzle out there. good evening thanks for staying with wjz. another potentially deadly terror plot foiled at the last second. police say the suspect wanted to kill police and men and women returning from war from overseas. new york city officials describe terror suspect jose pemental as a lone wolf who sympathizing with al-qaida. police do not believe he had any connections with al-qaida. but was developing bombs.

federal terrorism charges. in new york, randall pinkston, wjz news. the associated press is reporting the fbi is refusing to investigate the case because pemintel did not have the ability to carry out his plan. -- he's charged with attempted assassination for shooting at a white house window. one round cracked a window where the first family lives. he was arrested last week. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on the penn sexual abuse case. >> reporter: louis free has been tapped to look into the scandal. jerry sandusky is accused of sexually abusing at least eight boys during a 15 year period

and some of that abuse happened on campus. the scandal cost the university president and legendary head coach joe paterno their jobs. two other officials face charges of lying to the federal authorities investigating the abuse. >> the investigation is at least one of four underway. two of them criminal. a 75-year-old wisconsin man missing for two weeks has been found in western maryland. alex demetric reports, despite a large search, he was found dead. >> reporter: by monday morning they had found 75-year-old james wilkins in the mountains of allegheny county. >> his body was located about 3/4 of a mile. in a heavily wooded and steep ravine. >> the reason is he was last seen -- wilson left his home in

barely time for the bruises to heal before they have to play again. mark is in owins mills with the fan sports report. hello mark. >> hi guys. practice just ended i just spoke with coach john harbaugh as the team came off the practice field. he said it was a spirited work out and this team gave it their all to detail. such short time between their sunday game and their thursday night game. outside of the bye week when the ravens don't practice at all this is the least physical week of preparation for the team and this keyword this week is rest. they did work out at the indoor facility here in owins mills. ray lewis was not present for the work out early on. of course he missed yesterday's game. a short week is a challenge. but the ravens are lucky to be the home team considering san

after they play san francisco they'll go to cleveland. the nfl changed the starting time for that game. what was to be a 1:00 kick off now a 4:00 game at cleveland december 4 for the ravens. it's a game you'll be able to see right here on wjz. one key to every team making a play off push in the nfl is to avoid injuries and to that end it's bad news for the chicago bears. they have lost starting quarterback jake cutler, he needs surgery after surging a broken right thumb. it happened when he tried to make a tackle on san diego's antwon casen. it's a bummer for the bears, they lose their quarterback back up caleb haney will take over as chicago's starter. the townsend tigers earn an invitation to the play off party. one of the great turn around stories in the nation. coach rob ambross and the
