counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. detained in egypt. american students questioned by police for throwing fire bombs. >> what the students are telling their parents. >> i'm kai jackson. >> here's what people are talking about. >> the obama administration is calling for restraint. violent protests in egypt entered their fifth day. amidst the chaos are three american students in custody. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, one of them was able to call home today. >> reporter: protesters clashed with police across egypt for the sixth day in a row. they are demanding that the country's military generals hand over responsible for running the government to civilians. reports say more than 30 people have died in the violence. thousands more have been injured in clashes with police

firing tear gas at the crowd. this man is among them. >> translator: it's devastating, he says. >> reporter: three american students are still in custody. they were arrested on the roof of an university building, accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces. the three say they were just watching. one of them spoke to his parents by phone. he said he's being treated well under the circumstances. >> u.s. embassy officials in cairo have visited with the students. the obama administration is calling on protesters and police to end the violence. >> the vision security forces need to show more restraint. the parliamentary elections are set to take place on monday. egyptians express themselves in their desire for a democratic future through the ballot box. >> reporter: the ruling general tried to calm the crowds by saying the military would hold the presidential election in

july, much earlier than the original plan but that wasn't enough to make protesters happy. they want a temporary civilian administration in place now. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. this uprising in egypt is the longest one since the 18- day stretch of protesters that ultimately led to the fall of hosni mubarak. children and youth services are looking into new alleged cases of child sex abuse against jerry sandusky. we have more on the penn state scand. >> the two new cases were reported less than 60 days ago and one of them is a member of the sandusky family. children and youth services is investigating the allegations against sandusky because the alleged victims are still in the age of 18. the former defensive coordinator for penn state faces 40 criminal counts for allegedly sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period. 67-year-old sandusky says he is

innocent. sandusky is out on $100,000 bail but his status could change based on these new charges. >> all right, thank you. penn state's head coach joe paterno and the president of the university were fired for not reporting the allegations. a man with knives, a police officer with a gun. both came together in a baltimore city street. alex demetrick reports that confrontation has ended in death. >> two blocks were sealed off in west baltimore shortly after 9:00 this morning after a female police officer shot a man who was allegedly brandishing two knives. >> he refused verbal commands, did not drop the knives, so the officer fired upon the suspect. he was struck least once in the lower abdomen. >> reporter: the man was said to be alert and talking when taken to the hospital but by afternoon, police reported he had died from his gunshot wounds. >> homicide detectives will be investigating, as is routine, and once the findings are determined, we will present that to the state's attorney. >> reporter: neighbors have

seen trouble here before. >> every time you turn around, something's going on. somebody getting shot. there ain't never no good news. >> at this point, it's not clear whether the man threatened anybody else with the knives before the officer arrived. >> it's a little too early. we're waiting to get more witness statements and more things. >> reporter: one aspect is clear: >> it's the holidays and everything. it's just a shame. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> the officer wasn't hurt. neither she nor the man who died have yet been identified by police. a mysterious death in baltimore county is now being ruled a homicide. yulia pogrebenko, a russian woman living and visiting a relative, disappeared earlier this year. this summer, her remains were found in the chesapeake bay. police say she was murdered. detectives believe the homicide is demonstrate related. no charges have been filed. a multi-vehicle crash in baltimore county shuts down the

harrisburg expressway for hours. it happened just north of timonium on i-83 in the northbound lanes. eight people were hurt in the accident. details of the crash are still unclear at this hour. the road was closed for several hours while the crash was cleaned up. a school bus carrying children is hit in southern maryland. monique griego is live in the newsroom with more on the three- vehicle crash. >> 20 people were hurt in the accident, and now a truck driver is being charged with driving under the influence. the school bus was carrying students from great mills high school. they were heading home from a basketball game when the bus was hit last night. police say a truck failed to yield the right-of-way while turning at an intersection. and that truck driver was arrested and is charged with drunk driving. back to you. >> everybody injured has been treated and released. it seems the weather is adding insult to injury today as tens of thousands of marylanders hit the road for thanksgiving. wjz has complete coverage. mike mike has the latest.

>> about a million marylanders will be traveling for the thanksgiving holiday. >> reporter: with roads wet and packed, lines to get on trains and some flights delayed, the thanksgiving travel rush was enough to make some throw tantrums. >> once i'm on the train and it leaves, i'll be fine. >> any strategies? >> leave early. >> reporter: most marylanders are staying closer to home but trips are still averaging 251 to 450 miles. they expect 36,000 departing travelers today. there were a few delays this morning but most flights got off on time. >> this is like the super bowl for travel. airports and airlines, we work very hard throughout the year to plan and prepare for this thanksgiving travel period. >> reporter: and it could be worse. in some parts of the northwest, flooding made traveling like swimming upstreet. some areas saw major snow and ice, too. >> instead of leaving on wednesday, they may have to leave on thursday or on friday

move away, up and down the eastern seaboard, that rain is still pushing away. funk there was an exceptional amount of rain over the last few days, you are not incorrect. that's a double negative. you are correct, how about that? we're looking at rain amounts about 3.25 inches, 2.5 near sparks, 2 inches of rain near marshall, 1.75-inches and around 1.5 to 3 inches of rain from wbi north and west. it was actually until you got down to salisbury, you didn't really see a lot of rain there but even in those areas between a half and 1 inch of rain, all of this over the last 24 to 36 hours. it has been exceptional. we will have your complete updated first warning forecast and talk more about your travel forecast, coming up in just a few moments. we're going to chick in on our roads right now. here's the traffic control, another busy day out there, christy. >> i don't know if anything can top yesterday but we're well on

workmen rushed to rescue the pilot. he walked away with only minor injuries. an investigation into the accident is underway. unbelievable. the search is on in new jersey for a suspected child killer. police say this man, arthur morgan, iii, may have killed his 2-year-old daughter. the child's body was discovered tuesday inside a car submerged in a stream in northeastern new jersey. police say the toddler was found still strapped in her carseat. morgan was supposed to return the little girl to her mom monday after a custody visit. she is a one-woman crime spree according to authorities. the fair fax county police say 26-year-old stephanie schwab has been committing multiple crimes in virginia and is now on the run. peggy fox reports with the latest. >> reporter: police say stephanie linn schwab has no fixed address. they say the 26-year-old with a tat on her neck robbed this virginia commerce bank in

manassas. the surveillance picture show her wearing a dark hoody. the next day on saturday afternoon, here in the parking lot of the nemen marcus at tyson's corner, schwab pretended to be out of gas and convinced a 59-year-old woman to give her a ride. >> the victim in this particular case was not injured. however she was extremely upset and very distraught by what happened. >> reporter: as the woman drove down the road, police say schwab pulled out a knife and told the woman to get out. schwab drove off in the woman's 2003 silver acura with virginia tags xek-8095. she may still be driving it. >> stephanie schwab is no stranger to police. she has a lengthy criminal record, including many traffic violations and felony charges such as grand larceny and shop- lifting. >> this individual could be dangerous. these were two rather high-profile violent crimes that were committed and so we are looking for this

[ closing bell ringing ] >> they look happy there. but you know what, investors heading into the holiday weekend on a very down note. the dow is off 236 points. s&p off 26, nasdaq off 61. let's go to new york right now where we have tonight's cbs watch money update. >> reporter: investors led a selloff before thanksgiving. consumers increased their spending only slightly in october, while more americans applied for unemployment benefits last week. it's the first rise in jobless claims in two months. there was some positive news. americans' incomes rose the most in seven months, a sign they may spend more in the

test. >> you're going to get more gray hair. >> or no hair. you're right. well, we are looking at a very confusing forecast. if you're trying to peg it, let's give you an idea of what's going on. if you're trying to peg exactly what time of year it is based on our temperatures, today right around 2:00 or 3:00 this morning, we had just around 65 degrees or so. and we hit our daytime high around, then. we started to drop. so now we're at 50. even 50 is close to our normal high for this day. so deep in mind, 66 degrees or so is well above our average. we're at 73% relative humidity, 29.79 is the barometer reading and the barometer's going to go up. high pressure is now trying to take over our forecast. we have 36 in oakland right now, 57 down on the shore. everyone coming in somewhere around that temperature range. but look at the winds. this has really been the telling story for the day. winds coming in from the northwest have helped to suppress our temperatures. so 16-mile-per-hour winds

sustained it e airport, 20 down in d.c. but look at the gusts, just over the last hour. 29-mile-per-hour gusts. 35 down in d.c., 30 out towards oakland. we're not talking really a wind chill but it is going to start to get your attention when these winds start to finally pick up and the temperatures start to change. we're going to dry out right on through tomorrow. we're going to start to start tapping into some very mild air that's going to start building into the south and southwest. with high pressure moving in, this low that has brought us all this rain over the last few days is going to push out of here. the temperatures go up and with cooler air to our north, that high settles in and through the weekend, we're going to look at temperatures through the 60s. tonight, going down to just around 35 degrees, turning out clear and cool. for tomorrow, temperatures going to up to about 58 degrees, and then for the famed bowl, we are looking at kickoff temperature at 48 degrees, 49ers in town 8:20 so we're

the fbi, the cops. >> a government informants recorded the four accused men discussing their plans. they each face charges for allegedly plotting to attack officials with explosives. fbi agents arrested the men november 1st after identifying them as being part of a fringe militia group. a federal judge has denied bond for all four suspects. picking up the pieces. the chancellor at the university of california davis addresses students at a town hall meeting. as we report, she is apologizing for the pepper- spraying of peaceful demonstrators. >> reporter: chancellor linda katehi at the university of california davis apologized to students but deflected blame over how campus police handled the peaceful demonstration. >> i explicitly directed the chief of police that violence should be avoided at all costs. >> reporter: but that's not what happened last week when

police broke down an occupy camp. footage posted online shows officers pepper-spraying over a dozen students protesting tuition hikes. the rebuilt camp sits outside the packed town hall. it includes a food station, medical tent, and even a community calendar. >> the camp is now double its original size. despite university rules banning tents, the administration is allowing them to stay, at least for now. >> a lot of people in the administration are just as stubborn as we are. so hopefully, we'll be able to hold out. >> i wanttuse take back this university. >> reporter: on monday, over a thousand students and faculty members rallied against the police response. now, the university's student government association is calling on california's attorney general to investigate. >> i think it's a problem that we still don't know who gave the order to pepper-spray students. we don't know if it was a chief from our administration, they have said it was not them. >> reporter: the campus police chief and two other officers are on administrative leave. the president of the university

of california has appointed former los angeles police chief william bratten to investigate the incident. state lawmakers also announced they'll hold a hearing. wjz eyewitness news. >> now, while the university allowed the tents to remain, so far they have yet to announce any long-term decision. the fbi razeed an amish compound. the men are confused of forcefully cutting the beards and hair of amish men and women in ohio. cutting hair is a highly offensive act to the amish. the goal of the attacks were to humiliate those not following the sex-strict rules. all seven suspects are now in federal custody. howard county police are now loaded with life-saving gear. police patrol cars are equipped with automatic external defibrillators. they can treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest. they hope this will help officer who often arrive on the scene of a medical emergency

first to begin life-saving efforts. we have more on a study that shows coffee could cut your risk of cancer. >> well, the new study shows women who drink several cups of coffee a day may be less likely than their peers to develop cancer in the lining of their uterus. researchers at harvard university followed women between the ages of 34 and 59. they found compared to women who drink little or no coffee, those who averaged four or more- ups a day have a lower chance of developing endometrial cancer. >> thank you, mary. the most effective way for women to detect endometrial cancer is to look out for irregular menstrual bleeding. rain-slicked roads jammed up traffic here on interstate 85 in maryland this morning and it's not just the roads. flights were delayed at the airport. according to triple a., most

marylanders are staying closer to home this year but trips are still averaging 251 to 400 miles. so how is the weather shaping up for the holiday? taking a live look outside right now, wjz has complete coverage of the thanksgiving weather and the thanksgiving traffic and bob is here first with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> some sprinkles this afternoon. now, south of the washington area, that's where it's still raining just a bit. take a look at radar, the d.c. area, the beltway, 95 down to way, still a little bit of light rain that's heading off to the south. if you're heading up 95 all the way up to boston, pretty much to connecticut, there are still some rain showers along i-95. so you'll be dealing with that unfortunately, at least for the next few hours. it is moving off to the east and eventually will get out of that region. it looks like a much better weather picture coming up tomorrow. everywhere it's going to be pretty much sunny and dry. take a look at these rainfall numbers. as much as 3.75 inches fell.

there were some serious flooding in washington and carl county and portions of baltimore county, as well. westminster a little bit over three, baltimore county, 2.82. the airport about 1.5 inches. south and east, a lot less, less than an inch in salisbury. the good news is dry, sunny weather for the entire holiday. >> that does sound good. let's check in on the roads with the wjz traffic control. >> hi, everyone. well, 95 continuing to build out there in the northbound direction. you'll see a lot of brake lights there from the split all the way up to white marsh boulevard. as far as 70 goes, the problems in both directions, westbound heavy from 29 over to mariesville road. traveling the west side inner loop, 25 minutes there. and another 40 minutes on the top side inner loop from park heights avenue over to harbor road.

at least three people are dead after mud slides in southern italy. this is video of the aftermath. a 10-year-old boy was killed as his family tried to escape from their home. the mudslides swept away cars and washed out bridges. some of the flooding is being blamed on the government's failure to regularly clean storm drains. george clooney may trial in the trial of the -- they are among more than 200 witnesses accepted today. he was invited to a party at berlusconi's villa but declined. the texas judge who is seen beating his daughter is suspended. we have more on this.

>> that video has been viewed online by millions of people. now, the texas supreme court has suspended the arkansas county judge spending the outcome of a review. judge williams adams seen here beating his daughter is suspended immediately with pay. the state commission on judicial conduct started an investigation earlier this month. adams is suspended until the results come back. adams did agree to the suspension but does not admit guilt, fault or wrongdoing regarding the allegations. >> all right, thank you. adams' now 23-year-old daughter hillary uploaded the 24 video of her father beating her. the father of another missing boy as a warning for the boy's parents. kyron horman disappeared over a year ago. >> we need to focus on them and bring him home. that's it. >> reporter: he last kissed his son the morning this picture was taken. it was june 4th, 2010.

kenny williams returned home monday night and found that someone had been drinking his beer, lying in his bed and had even defrosted a lobster. they had big plans. his 2005 world series ring was missing, as well. police arrested the suspect that night when they found him peeking through a window. at the time, he was wearing williams' clothes and his world series ring. well, it's not even thanksgiving yet and some people are already camping out to get black friday deals. lines are starting to form all over outside big retailers. in michigan, one man decided to dress up for deals. he's waiting in line outside a best buy store in a tiger costume. he says it's keeping him warm. a holiday classic, a christmas story, is being turned into a musical and the new version is getting help from the original ralphie. it's already opened in detroit and will hit five cities. the songs include a major award

rain, there's the snow across northern new england, as much as 6 to 8 inches. rain continues to head out luckily for our region. still have a few lingering clouds, that one little batch of showers. it will clear out tomorrow. beautiful, bright sunshine, a really nice day. the wind will diminish. it will be cooler because our high was early today, it was 64 degrees. but friday with the hide moves off. here comes the mild air just in time for the weekend. it's going to be beautiful. northwest winds up at 25 knots. small craft advisory until 6:00 p.m. tonight, then, clearing skies, cooler down to 35. tomorrow, plenty of sunshine, average high around the low 50s. it will be warmer than that. 58 degrees, a really pleasant thanksgiving day and if you're going to the ravens game tomorrow night, it will be basically in the mid- to upper 40s. good football weather tomorrow night. >> it's going to be hot, hot, hot in those stands.
