hi, mike. >> the inner loop is a little bit sluggish. we traveled maryland and beyond to give you a closer look at how people are getting away. >> reporter: you can see some of the more than 160,000 people who will pass through the toll plaza today. maryland's busy. and at the airport, the lines were long but there were only a handful of delays. >> we got bumped from two flights and the third one got here okay. >> it's good to be home. i think everyone sort of goes the gauntlet to be home with family. >> this is like the super bowl for travel. airports and airlines, we work very hard throughout the year to plan and prepare for this thanksgiving travel period. >> reporter: the busiest day for thanksgiving travel was not without frustrations, though. big airport delays in nearby philly, gas prices are still higher than we were this time last year, and a strong storm system brought rain into the pacific northwest where getting around was like swimming upstream. and there was snow and ice,

too, but none here where a proud dad couldn't wait to welcome his daughter home from college. >> i think she was at the airport three hours early. so she may not act like she wants to be home but i think she really does. >> reporter: thankful for a smooth trip and this reunion. >> i'm ready to go back. [ laughter ] >> a good reunion, that's what thanksgiving is all about. also at dwi, keep in mind the air transflights have moved in with southwest so there's a change in terminals there and if you're hitting the roads, maryland has a new 511 system. you can call 511 on your cellphone for traffic updates. >> i don't want to jinx it but so far, behind you, it looks okay. complete coverage continues live at traffic control. we have a closer look at the delays. >> well, hi, everyone. i would say we're not out of the woods yet. let's take a live look. we have a live shot of 50 eastbound, things still continuing to build.

as far as 83 and northbound goes, you can see things really beginning to slow down there over to belfast. and also, the inner loop is beginning to back down as well, at least 30 minutes now over to hartford road. let's take a look at a graphic that we have about some slow spots that you will need to stop out for traveling this season. if you're traveling up in the delaware area, we already have some reported delays there over into the pennsylvania line, heavy traffic around the new jersey turn pike. accidents already reported at exit 8 and exit 13 and the gw bridge very, very busy there heading into new york. a lot of traffic expected on both levels. so we'll continue to bring you up to date as the evening progresses. back over to you. >> thank you very much. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are keeping an eye on our driving conditions. let's start with bob tracking first warning doppler radar. >> as you saw, there's some rain south of the city. you take a look at the radar, there's a little batch of rain

down 97 towards annapolis. also, down across much of southern maryland, some rain heading down in your general direction. as you head up towards the new york area and connecticut, still some rain on the jersey turn pike right now. you can see it but it's moving off to the east. so shortly, at least east of philadelphia, there's still a little rain but if you're heading up a little bit later this evening, generally should be dry. that's the good news. maybe one or two brief showers. tim has a look at what we can expect for the next three days and it's looking real good. >> well, after tomorrow night, this very strong low that bob talked about moving out and high pressure moving in, these winds will start to calm down. if you're driving a high- profile vehicle, the winds are going to play into the forecast because they will blow you around. there are no wind advisories in effect right now but the winds are definitely picking up out here right now and will be for the rest of this evening and into tomorrow. now, tomorrow, the low we're expecting about 34 degrees but the high right around 57 to 58. on friday for black friday in time for shopping, the

temperatures going up into the 60s to mid60-degree range. could be higher than that, the lows in the 40s and on sunday with sunshine, 64 degrees, back down into the 40s. it's going to be a really nice stretch moving into this holiday weekend for all of your travel and shopping plans. we'll have your complete updated forecast if i don't blow away in the meantime, coming up in just a few minutes. back inside. >> you become down there, young man. thank you. stay with wjz for complete thanksgiving travel coverage for the latest on the traffic, the airlines and weather, log onto www.wjz.com. 20 people are hurt in a crash involving a school bus and a suspected drunk driver in southern maryland. we have details on what happened. >> well, most of the victims are students who were traveling home from a basketball game. police say their school bus swerved into the woods to avoid a cut that truck that cut in front of them in an intersection. the driver of the truck is charged with dui. paramedics rushed 15 students to the hospital along with the

bus driver and another adult. two people from a third vehicle involved were also hurt. everyone has been treated and released. mary? >> okay. thank you. the suspected drunk driver is identified as 45-year-old john cravates of mechanicsville. a neighborhood feud turns deadly in hartford county. a man refuses to leave his neighbor's house and dies. we speak with a woman who witnessed the whole thing. >> oh, my god. joe! jay! where are you? >> reporter: janet green is in disbelief after learning her friend 53-year-old joseph breckinridge died tuesday evening, made even more distraught by the bizarre circumstances. >> he told me to get my husband, i got my husband, they were holding him down until he got there and when the cops came, he was gone. >> reporter: she watched the scene unfold at her friend's house in the 2,000 block.

breckinridge walked into his next door neighbor's unlocked home uninvited. when he refused to leave, a fight broke out. >> it was a struggle, it was physical, there were no weapons involved and we'll need to wait for the results from the office of the chief medical examiner. >> reporter: neighbors say he would often walk up and down the street, knocking on many doors, trying to get inside. >> i don't know him and he would want to use the phone, can i use your phone? i mean, bang, bang, bang. >> reporter: green says he suffered from mental illness. >> how can i look at him as a criminal? >> he's never disrespected me. the most is he would use my phone or i would give him something to eat. >> reporter: police continue to investigate what went wrong. >> it's horrible. i didn't want that man to die. he has a family. why would i want that on anybody? >> police do not plan to file any charges in this case but say that could change depending what the autopsy report

reveals. >> thank you. breckinridge was transported to the hospital where he later died. government debt, taxes, unemployment benefits, major issues left unsolved by congress. now, growing outrage among voters. wjz is live in north baltimore. adam may has a stunning new poll. >> tonight, a lot of people say they have had enough. >> reporter: disgust with congress reaches the highest level in more than two decades. a new poll find a quarter of americans have a favorable view of congress. a supercommittee failed to reach an agreement to cut $1.2 trillion from the federal deficit. >> do you like the job that congress is doing right now? >> no, no. >> i just say the word congress and your reaction is -- >> is not positive. >> let them fight amongst themselves. >> would you say our government's broken? >> i would say it's broken and it's broke. >> reporter: congress' job approval rating is also at a

record low, falling more than 25 points to just 12%. >> what could they be doing better? >> calm down and stay away from the political bickering and think about really what's best for the country. and not what's best for each political party. >> they just want to get together and think of the country. >> they're not compromising. >> exactly, exactly. >> reporter: the washington post points out the approval ratings are lower than bp's handling of the gulf oil spill, lower than banks and the irs, all more popular than congress. >> i know, i know. >> are you surprised? >> i'm not surprised. >> well, i'm not a crook. >> reporter: even president nixon during watergate found more approval than this congress. >> so of course, we heard all kinds of possible solutions to this problem. people talking about campaign finance reform, term limits, but a very popular phrase we heard today, fire them all. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. and that being said, 33 senators and the entire house

of representatives will be up for election next november. it is another rough day on wall street amid growing concerns over europe's debt crisis. the dow is out of 236 points, nasdaq down 61. this is the sixth straight day of losses. john and jim harbaugh are preparing to make nfl history. tomorrow, they become the first brothers to compete as head coaches when the ravens take on the 49ers. wjz is live with complete coverage. jessica kartalija has fan reaction, but sports director mark viviano has a preview of the game and our expert prediction. >> how are you doing? this game does set up as a battle of two of the nfl's best teams. add to that circumstances and story lines that could make for an intriguing holiday treat. >> reporter: the ravens play on turkey day. that's a first. two brothers go head to head as head coaches. that's never happened before. san francisco has to travel coast to coast on four days'

this man is among them. it's devastating, he says. three american students are still in custody. they were arrested on the roof of an university building, accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces. the three say they were just watching. one of them, derrik sweeney, spoke to his parents by phone. he said he's being treated well under the circumstances. >> u.s. embassy officials in cairo have visited with the students. the obama administration is calling on protesters and police to end the violence. >> egyptian security forces need to show more restraint. parliamentary elections slated to take place on monday, that needs to be where egyptians express themselves and their desire for a democratic future for their country, through the ballot box. >> reporter: the ruling general tried to calm the crowds by saying the military would hold the presidential election in july, much earlier than the original plan, but that wasn't enough to make protesters

happy. they want a temporary civilian administration in place now. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the students being held are from georgetown university, drexel university and indiana university. they are in egypt through a study abroad program. new information about the investigation involving baltimore clerk of circuit court frank conoway. an outside prosecutor will take charge of his case. he is accused of displaying a gun during an argument with blogger adam meister. he says he has a permit to carry the weapon but state police records so it's expired. we continue to track the thanksgiving travel rush. take another look at the roads right now from sky chopper 13, it's all lit up out there. you can see heavy delays on the baltimore beltway. we'll have another traffic update coming up all-new at 5:30. well, as many people travel to their thanksgiving

destinations, goodwill volunteers are serving up turkey dinners to those in need. monique griego is there as thousands of people receive a free holiday meal. >> you're welcome. happy holidays. >> reporter: turkey and all the fixin's. >> the food is really good and the atmosphere is really nice. they're going out of their way to make us feel comfortable. >> reporter: she and her family shared an early thanksgiving with a crowd of people as goodwill served up free turkey dinners at the downtown convention there. >> there's people out here that don't have family and the people here who maybe feel like there's no family. >> reporter: 1,800 pounds of turkey is what goodwill expects to go through in order to feed the 3,500 people flowing through these doors. >> follow that pretty young lady. >> it really does take a lot of goodwill. there are around 250 volunteers here and all this food is don't want -- is donated. >> giving is always better than receiving. >> reporter: for many, if it

weren't for this place, they wouldn't have a thanksgiving. >> i know what they've been through because i was homeless at one time. >> reporter: once walter rice got back on his feet, he decided to volunteer. this is his 18th year at this dinner. >> i love it. i love to see the smile on people's face. >> reporter: besides being happy and satisfied, many here like rice want to give back. >> ei hoped to participate in something like this. >> this is the 56th time goodwill has served up a free thanksgiving dinner. >> god bless 'em, thank you. most of the food served today was donated by martin's west caterers so thank you to martin's west, as well. >> a terrific volunteer effort. real meaning of these holidays. it's cooling down as it should for thanksgiving, 49 now with a north-northwest at 12, makes it feel like 42. the barometer back up and we'll come back with a dry and very pleasant holiday. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

oh, man, what a beautiful sunset. after some of that rain in the region, some drier and cooler air moving in at least for tonight. let's take a look at radar.

there's one little batch of light shower activity just south of the baltimore region and it continues to move across the bay. so you folks in the eastern shore may see a little bit of light rain in the next hour or two moving into the southern counties, st. mary's, a little bit of charles county. look for some showers. it moves out. there have been some snowflakes. 36 now out in oakland. they had some flurries earlier but it's pretty much done. 46 in cumberland, we're down to 49. the dew point's down to 40 and i notice we'll get back down into the 30s. tonight, it will be a little bit breezy. it's going to feel a little bit colder than we've seen. 51 in ocean city and the warm spot in putuxen. temperatures almost at 70 degrees before that front came through. you see the northwest wins that's bringing in this drier and cooler air. that's where the showers are, like a secondary front.

21-mile-per-hour winds up inelkton, 28 at pax river, and 14 with a temperature of 36 out in oakland, feeling pretty chilly out there. d.c. at 16. some areas picked up more than 2.5 inches, almost 3 inches in some spots. northern baltimore county, the airport picked up a little bit more than an inch and a half and there was some flooding in some areas in baltimore, carol, washington county. to the north of us today, just a little good batch of snow towards maine. one to as much as 6 inches in maine. heavy rain all along the 95 corridor. earlier today it's pretty much moved off, thank goodness but there's a little bit of shower activity in the portions of new jersey just east of new york, you see some rain. and some scattered stuff in new jersey. the area of rain moving away. so for the time being, we'll look for clearing skies, a much nicer day coming up tomorrow and high pressure not much of a breeze, sunshine, it will be

officer shot and man who was allegedly brandishing two knives. >> he refused verbal commands, so in fear for her life, the officer fired upon the suspect. he was struck at least once in the lower abdomen. >> reporter: the man was said to be alert and talking when taken to the hospital but by afternoon, police reported he had died from his gunshot wounds. >> homicide detectives will be investigating as is routine and once the findings are determined, we'll present that to the state's attorney. >> reporter: neighbors have seen trouble here before. >> every time you turn around, something going on, man. somebody getting shot. never get no good news. >> at this point, it's not clear whether the man threatened anyone else with the knives. >> just a little too early. we're waiting to get more witness statements and more things. >> reporter: one aspect is clear. >> i mean, it's so close to thanksgiving. the always and everything, it's just a shame. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> the officer was not injured. neither she nor the man who

died have been identified by police. baltimore county police say the son of a russian woman is a suspect in her mysterious death. yulia pogrebenko disappeared while driving from the airport to maryland in february. her remains were discovered four months later in the chesapeake bay. police say her son has not been charged. he's in prison for a delaware bank robbery. new allegations of child sex abuse have surfaced against jerry sandusky. vic is in the newsroom with more on the unique nature of this investigation. >> these are the first known cases in which the accusers are still minors. they are in the initial stages of their investigation. the two new cases were reported less than 60 days and are not included in the grand jury report. a lawyer for the former coach says one of the allegations was made by a member of sandusky's family. sandusky is charged with 40 counts of sex crimes against boys. he's currently out on bail and

faces a preliminary hearing on december the 13th. back to you. >> thank you. all of the other young men who have come forward in this case are now over the age of 18. a pilot's brush with death is caught on tape when his helicopter crashes into a holiday display in new zealand. the chopper was setting up a huge christmas tree when it became tangled in some of the cables. workers on the ground rushed to pull that pilot from the wreckage. he was shaken up but otherwise okay. investigators are reviewing the video to find out what exactly went wrong. >> unbelievable. their story has captivated the world. now, the parents of missing british toddler madeleine mccann are venting their anger at the press. the mccanns are testifying in an investigation into media ethics in london. >> reporter: kate and jerry mccann told a british judge the media invaded their privacy and

made the search for their daughter madeleine unavailable. >> we were shouting out please stop what you're doing. we're trying to find our daughter. >> reporter: the mccanns say at first, the press was helpful, showing photos of their 4-year- old, abducted at the family's vacation villa in portugal in 2007. but soon, they say the tabloids shifted blame on them and even made stories up, printing headlines full of lies. >> the front page of the daily media with a photograph of madeleine with the headline she's dead. >> reporter: kate mccann says she felt quote mentally raped when the news of the world published part of her private diary, which described her feelings after madeleine's disappearance. >> i felt totally violated. i had written these words at the most desperate time of my life. >> it was the phone hacking scandal that triggered the ethics hearing now underway

here at britain's high court. >> reporter: celebrities and families of murder and terror victims are testifying about how the media has treated them. harry potter author j.k. roweling is set to speak on thursday with her battles with the press to protect the privacy of her children. there could be major changes in the way britain's media operates. in london, tina krause, wjz eyewitness news. recuperate murdock's son has resigned as director of the company. the fbi arrested seven amish men in ohio on federal hate crime charges. prosecutors say the men forcefully cut the beards and hair of several amish men and women. that act is considered highly offensive to the amish. the acts were reportedly ordered by the group leader in order to push those who were not considered faithful enough. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich is taking criticism today for

proposing that illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country. >> i don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century. >> his rivals fired back during last night's foreign policy debate calling gingrich's proposal a magnet for illegal aliens. a clear choice for the g.o.p. nominee has not emerged from the debates but in six weeks, voters will begin making the decision in iowa. believe it or not, some people are already camping out for black friday deals. more than 50 million americans are expected to brave the crowds for the bargains. we have the report on the biggest trends this year. >> reporter: it's not even thanksgiving and santa has been settled in at the mall for days. it's the final countdown to black friday, the official start of the holiday shopping season, and consumer experts think it could be a big one. >> 55 million americans, around

29% of adults, tell us they're going to be shopping on black friday. that's a big number. that's the first uptick we've seen in a few years. >> reporter: the more they shop, the more cash goes into the economy, which is why the stakes are so high. with many americans struggling financially, consumers will be looking for practical gifts like clothing, things people need, not just want. that works for michelle shovack, who's on a tight budget this year. >> i'm going to ask for more practical gifts like sneakers. >> reporter: electronics will also be big, and gift cards, even though one in four americans will have one left over from last year. >> to pack in the shoppers, big retailers are extending their hours on black friday and many stores like toys "r" us are opening on thanksgiving. >> reporter: online retailers are also hunting for business with steep discounts and free shipping even before cyber

monday and your cellphone could be your best shopping buddy this weekend. >> there's an evolution going on. 13% of people use smart phones to get their deal information. >> reporter: stores are now sending coupons through mobile applications so shoppers can swipe the discounts straight from their phones. wjz eyewitness news. >> and we know that cyber monday is catching up to black friday sales with consumers spending a record $32.6 billion online last year. it's also one of the busiest travel days of the year and maryland roads are packed for the second night in a row. let's check in again with the traffic control. any changes? >> actually, it's gotten a little bit lighter but we still do some plenty of delays to talk about. traveling on the west side of the inner loop from the western boulevard over to security boulevard, 35 minutes at least to get through. as far as 95 goes, a couple of slow spots to update you on. northbound from the howard county line over to the harvard

lunch, dinner. >> reporter: she writes everything down to make sure she doesn't take the wrong dose. >> you really have to watch it. it can get a little complicated. >> reporter: a new study from the centers for disease control finds that each year, nearly 100,000 adults over 65 end up in the emergency room because of the wrong combination or dose of their medications. doctors say the mixups can lead to everything from allergic reactions to unintentional overdoses. >> elderly patients are usually taking multiple medications that sometimes interact with each other and many of these patients end up in the hospital where other problems with develop. >> the study found that most of the emergency hospitalizations were due to a few commonly used drugs, mainly blood thinners and diabetes medications. >> reporter: nearly half of those emergency visits were for patients 80 or older. they need to stay informed about the meds they're taking

also included a dye pack. the men found the dye pack and threw it into the bushes. police are still searching for those suspects. cheating on college entrance exams. the investigation into an s.a.t. scam in new york is growing as more students turn themselves in. kristin thorne reports for wjz with details. >> reporter: three young men now facing felony charges and jail time. prosecutors say they impersonated students taking the s.a.t. and in exchange, were paid huge sums of money. >> do you want to say anything to your family? >> reporter: and then one by one, at least seven other students surrendered. >> why are you hiding your face? >> reporter: sources tell cbs two that these students, the ones hiding their faces, are being charged misdemeanors for allegedly paying for the impostors to take the test for them. attorney melvin ross says his client, a 17-year-old boy,
