their camps came and went. >> occupy wall street. occupy los angeles, occupy everything and never give it back! >> reporter: all morning, the situation remained tense, with minor scuffles and a few arrests. >> i don't think anyone has a plan. >> so you don't want to get arrested at this point? >> no. >> i don't think getting arrested is a good idea. so we're going to try to avoid that. >> reporter: many came to show down between police and protestors. now they're all gone. but the people who call this park home for nearly two months are still here. >> reporter: hundreds of tents remain. >> i think it's important to take a stand and defend it. and -- eventually, we will be evicted -- evicted. we know that. >> there's a strong police presence all around the encampment. but l.a.'s mayor says his city will give protestors plenty of time to move out, in an effort to avoid violent clashes that

played out if other parts of the country. in los angeles, sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> occupy protestors in baltimore delivered an application to the city to use mceldon square until april. a spokesman for mayor stephanie rawlings-blake says recreation and parks will make the decision on whether to grant the parks their permit. maryland man suspected in the disappearance of robyn gardner is about to be released from an aruban jail. vic has the latest on gary giordano. >> a court hearing will take place here on wednesday, a day after giordano is released from jail. he will be res heed -- released at 8:00 p.m. he is being allowed to return to the u.s. and likely maryland. giordano is the main suspect in the disappearance of robyn gardner. >> robyn gardner has not been

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: during the call, lori fine talked about confronting her husband. >> you know, go to a place, where there's gay boys. find yourself a gay boy. >> reporter: davis also claims he had a sexual relationship with fine's wife when he was 18. and zach thomaselli said fine molest 4eu78 ed -- molested him when he was 13. >> he put his hands down my shorts and molested me. >> reporter: but he may have credibility issues. his father says he is lying about fine. but fine lost all of the support where he worked for 36 years and from head coach jim bayheim. on facebook, bayheim said, i deeply regret any statements i made that may have been insensitive to victims of abuse. fine has not been charged with any crimes. >> the allegations at syracuse come on the heels of a sexual

abuse scandal at penn state, where former football coach jerry sandusky has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse. 61-year-old alvin wright was picked up by sex crimes detectives. he's charged with sexual assault. police say they found wright by using dna samples left on the young victim. now, his dna was in the database from previous drug arrests. wjz is in south baltimore right now. we'll have reaction to the arrests from residents coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. election night robocalls. they are the focus of courtroom action today. derek valcourt explains pretrial motions are under way for an aide to former governor bob ehrlich. >> jury selection under way after the judge in this case disclosed the fact that his own house received one of the robocalls in question on election night. he says his wife answered the phone. and he felt that was not enough to stop him from presiding over

this case. >> reporter: as governor bob ehrlich ran for election in 2010, paul suric led his campaign. and it's suric, not ehrlich who authorized this. they say it was suric who authorized the robocalls. hinting there was no need to go vote. >> governor o'malley and president obama have been successful. we're okay. relax. everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> now, suric and campaign consultant julius hensen each face counts. suric is also charged with obstruction of justice. prosecutors say he intentionally withheld documents. suric maintains his innocence. attorney dwight petty will hear this. >> i'm confident that when a jury hears all the facts he

will be found not guilty. >> reporter: they say it states the first and foremost desired outcome is voter suppression and targets african americans. >> reporter: you may remember on election night, congressman elijah cummings recorded his own robocalls, telling voters to head to the polls and to ignore any other calls telling hem them not to vote. defense attorneys want to know how he found out about the robocall that is now at the center of this case. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: and some other prominent political names may be called to testify. find out new coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. >> reporter: a major drug operation is discovered by accident in mount vernon today. officers confiscated 9,000 pounds from a home in the 800 block of north cothed ral street. police initially went to the home to serve an arrest warrant

for an unrelated case. one man was arrested at the scene. difficult news today for a long-time baltimore radio show host. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom now with ron smith's announcement about his health and his future. jessica? >> reporter: kai, smith announced today that he is hanging up his microphone. he's suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. he's been doing phone-ins with his guests. but he says he no longer has strength and is retiring. smith is at home and under hospice care. he has been on the air, on the radio for 26 years. >> smith's friends and family have set up team reason to help support johns hopkins pancreatic cancer research. our string of unseasonably warm weather continues outside. it is partly sunny and mild. but there is a change on the way. we'll has weather and traffic together. i'm going to start with bob.

witnesses jump into action to save a life after a car accident in california. this cell phone video shows several people who together managed to lift up an overturned pickup truck yesterday. some even arrived at the scene. the accident killed one person and left several others injured. >> it happened at an alumni luncheon. as two go at it at the podium. they start throwing punches when one offered a wilted

flower to others it apparently goes all the way back to a game back in 1963. let's hope they shook hands afterward. daring search and rescue mission. mark phillips has the story for wjz. >> by the time the helicopter which he was copilotting arrived on the scene, the russian cargo ship that had put out a distress call had already sunk. the task was to try to find and rescue survivors. two of which were found and one by one, he manages to put a harness around this. but one is known to have died.

five others are thought to be missing. the strong gale was still blowing as other helicopters and ships joined the search. but the russian cargo ship had gone down too fast. >> it was struck by an enormous wave. and broke her bike. and obviously, it was such a catastrophic feeling. she sank very quickly. >> prince william is on a three- year assignment. working toward his captain ticket. this summer in canada, he was at the controls, as he tried to land it on the surface waters. not a technique the british used and not one that would have been used in the conditions of this weekend's rescue. >> prince william and the other on the ship. mark phillips, cbs news,

and temperatures running almost 20 degrees above normal. it's just been amazing the last three or four days. beautiful, dry, sunny and warm. it's about to change, of course. it can't last forever. especially here at the end of november. almost december. we do have rain on the way, probably starting around 10:00, 11:00 in the morning, tomorrow. ending maybe 7:00, 8:00 in the evening. so six, eight, nine hours or so of rain expected on your tuesday. take a look at temps right now. still very warm at 66. east/southeast winds beginning. turning a little more off the ocean. and the barometer is just beginning to fall. 30.05 inches. right now, it's warm everywhere. easton, 70. ocean city, 61. 65, pax river. and the cool spot, oakland. more clouds out there at 54. dew point at 53. they'll be coming up. temperatures tonight, getting probably in the mid-50s, maybe low 50s. drizzle, fog forming maybe late

tonight, which will transition into rain. looks like a wet day. 67, bel air. westminster, 67. southeast winds, beginning to bring in that moisture off the ocean. and there's plenty of rain out to the west of us, i guess for our region. we're looking anywhere from a half inch to maybe as much as an inch in some spots because the main area of low pressure is going to get really past to our west. so some of this will be going. clear skies today. clouds. broken sky. maybe even clearing tonight. you'll see that for a while. we'll see clear skies, which may help to form that fog. down to the south, sooner or later, that rain is going to be with us and be with us through tomorrow evening. once that rain goes past us, it starts to turn to rain. wednesday, much cooler. by the end of the week, temperatures running just about normal. or maybe slightly below normal for this time of year. not a bad forecast, once we get rid of that rain. southeast winds, 10 to 15

it is 4:30. 66 degrees and partly sunny hello, everyone. i'm vic carter. denise is off today. here's what people are talking about. clicking their way to christmas. cyber monday shoppers snag their ways to deals without leaving homes. retailers are hoping for record- breaking shopping season. >> reporter: more americans than ever before went shopping this weekend. up nearly 70% this last year according to the retail federation. and even though they're back at

work, consumers are still shopping they're bargain hunterring online. >> there's got to be a new deal to keep customers coming back. and cyber monday is just another vehicle for that. >> industry trackers say nearly half are aur offering discounts this cyber monday. many of the deals were available even before today. in fact, 38% of the weekend sales took place on the internet. >> whether online or in the stores, the more americans shop, the more cash goes into the economy. wall street is already celebrating. >> reporter: the stock market posted triple-digit gains. and the economists are hoping the black friday enthusiasm continues. >> we don't know if that's the desperate consumer trying to get the best purchase right now. or if it will last into the holiday season. >> most say they'll split their sales between internet and stores. buying online cuts out the crowds. but consumers say those long

over the next eight weeks. the final results are expected by january. >> presidential elections won't be held until next june. the man accused of plotting an attack at the pentagon will remain behind bars. today, a judge ordered resjuan feres held without bail. he pled not guilty to charges that he plotted to fly an airplane low into the pentagon. he was arrested after an undercover operation. an idaho man, accused of shooting at the white house is back in court. oscar ortega hernandez is accused of firing shots at the white house this month. one actually hit the building near the family's living quarters. an initial evaluation found him competent to stand trial. he faces attempted assassination charges. an elderly man is carjacked outside a maryland grocery store. no now, police say it's a third similar robbery there in a week. and investigators believe the

same man is responsible for the crimes. >> reporter: the 60-year-old victim didn't want to talk to reporters earlier today, after going through that horrible ordeal. montgomery county police say he was loading his groceries into a car at a giant supermarket in wheaton, when another man used a sharp object to force him into his car and drive away. the suspect then forced the man to drive around, and withdraw money from at least one atm, before letting him go free in northwest d.c. >> the gas station attendant said the carjacker let the man go near the tacoma metro stop. the man then called over to the gas station, where he called for help. >> reporter: investigators say the one who robbed and kidnapped this man is the same person who robbed and kidnapped another one earlier this week. in both cases, the suspect picked him up and drives him around. both times, the suspect is also believed to have gotten away using the metro. his victims were not hurt.

>> and that suspect remains at large. we have breaking news right now. moments ago, a connecticut judge agrees to expedite the east coast rapist authorities say darn links him to 17 women from virginia to connecticut over the last decade. at least four of those crimes took place in maryland. virginia prosecutors planned to have thomas face trial in their state. officials have agreed, thomas has pled not guilty. lawyers for senator robert kennedy say they have new evidence that clears their client. lawyers for sirhan sirhan say he was influenced to fire the shots. he is currently serving a life sentence for the 1968 shooting. a mysterious highjacker continues to captivate the country. mary has the latest in the db

cooper case. >> reporter: a panel hopes to break new ground on the cold case at a public symposium in portland. the man known as db cooper hijacked a flight and demanded a $2,000 ransom. he jumped from the plane with a parachute strapped to him. he's never been seen again the symposium brought together many people in the past few years. one of the most high-profile people is marlg marla cooper, who claims her uncle is the deceased killer. chevy volt. during government crash tests last week, one lithium ion battery pack caught fire. while there had been no fires reported in highway crashes, a volt parked in a test facility did catch fire. gm insists the volt is safe. it is a great day to roll

hazing lawsuit. the parents of a drum major ata&m university are suing for their son's death. he had been vomiting and complained he could not breathe before he collapsed. police suspect hazing but have not ruled on an official cause of death. championship officials say the school's band may have been covering up hazing for years. a trial date is set for the

murder -- the main suspect -- joran van der sloot. he claims his right to counsel was violated during extradition. vander sloatd is the main suspect in natalee holloway's disappearance. he was never charged. rising violence. mandy clark reports for wjz near the afghanistan border. >> we're here at the border crossing that pakistan has closed in retaliation to nato air strikes. now, more than 300 trucks, carrying supplies to international forces in afghanistan are stranded on the other side of the border. >> this is the aftermath of the air strikes. dead soldiers, here beneath white blankets, scattered among the wounded. the cell phone footage, obtained by cbs news, was shot by soldiers, picking their way through the bodies. >> so many of us.

>> reporter: carried live on tv, with politicians and military generals in attendance. the funerals for the pakistani soldiers were treated like general. the grief spilled onto the streets in pakistan. nato forces have apologized for the incident and launched a full investigation. afghan officials say coalition forces came under fire prompting the air strikes. >> pakistan sealed this border strike after u.s. forces killed two pakistani soldiers. but with so many more soldiers dead, and anti-american sentiment in pakistan running high, this border could be closed for much longer. mandy clark, cbs news, afghanistan. nato has said it is investigating. but it has not questioned

pakistan's claim that soldiers were killed. police in orlando raid a home as part of the search for a missing mother. 33-year-old michelle parker disappeared. her episode of the people's court aired. they say it belongs to dale smith. her ex-fiance is not named as a suspect in her disappearance. police won't say what, if anything, was found in the home. the case of a missing baby, lisa irwin. jessica kartalija has the latest. >> reporter: a psychic in texas claims she had a vision, showing her where to search for lisa irwin. the psychic started posting everything she saw on her blog, the day baby lisa went missing. she claims to have seen the baby in a hole by the water. rescuered discovered a well similar to what was described but there was no baby. >> kansas police say they plan

to investigate the well that the searchers found. a new study on kindergarten students was shocking. their wastelines are bigger than ever. researchers found that nearly 40% of the kindergarteners had a body mass index of 75 percentile or higher. that's a 20% increase. more babies are developing flat heads from sleeping on their backs. now, the academy of pediatrics is releasing guidelines from the syndrome. randall pinkston has the latest from new york. >> reporter: one side of vincent antonnucci's head is flat. so the you're-year-old is wearing a helmet to try to shapen it. >> i noticed it.

>> there has been an increase since doctors recommend babies sleeping on their backs to reduce s.i.d.s. now they are out with guidelines to try to treat flat head. physical therapy on the neck muscles can correct most cases. >> these do form rr -- deformities do happen, but most are benign and will resolve on their own. >> parents should increase stomach play time, and turn the child's head, each night, from left to right in the crib. >> reporter: doctors say if there is no improvement in six months, that's when parents should see a specialist. but some experts say, in severe cases, acting sooner is best. >> if we know the child is going to need the helmet anyway, because of the numbers and the asymmetry is so great, i recommend not waiting. because the younger the baby is, the softer the bones are, and the faster the bones grow. >> reporter: the anton upies

beginning to bring in low-level moisture. duplicate is going to be coming up later tonight. maybe as early as 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. some fog and clouds could develop over the region. barometer beginning to fall. it's warm everywhere. 61 in ocean city. 54. with clouds out in oakland now. didn't get quite as warm. 64 there in quum ber land. and locally, mid- to upper 60s. 63, rock hall by the bay. 64 annapolis and kent island. so very nice. what a beautiful thanksgiving holiday weather we had. southeast winds now. bringing that moisture in. that will be increasing tonight. and by tomorrow, here's what's happening. to the west of us, low pressure sitting over kentucky, tennessee moving toward ohio. the bulk of that rain will pass to the north of us. but this is going to swing by our region tomorrow. maybe by 10:00, 11:00 in the morning, start see something

rain. during the afternoon, maybe some steady rain. moderate shower activity. and by tomorrow evening, maybe after 9:00, 10:00, it's pretty much done as that low passes by as the front moves through. you can see from maryland into virginia now. a lot of clear skies. what they'll do with that moisture coming in is to create low-level clouds or fog and maybe drizzle. watch out for that late tonight. early in the morning, before the rain begins, that low passing west of us, eventually, the whole passes by and cooler air coming in for tomorrow night. wednesday, a lot cooler than we've we've seen. probably around 50 or so. and the rest of the week will be generally sunny, with temperatures close to normal. we're talking low 50s. maybe above normal. southeast winds on the bay today. small craft advisory. bay temp around 52 still. tonight, then look for the clouds moving in tonight. maybe patchy fog forming. and drizzle. 63, still mild, at least early in the day. with cloudy skies and breezy, mild day. then the rain developing. probably continuing throughout
