at least three vehicles now we see that are involved in this collision. you see the minivan. then there's a car actually next to that, which has been pretty much taken apart by fire officials during the course of a rescue. we know that at least two people have been transported from the scene here to shock trauma. looks like another medic unit just left the scene. and further up the scene here, we noticed a school bus, looks like one of the smaller buses -- buses involved in this. it is not clear if any of them are significantly injured. we just saw a medic unit going in. minor damage on the back of the bus. but as you can see, really, really significant damage, causing patapsco avenue to be closed in its entirety as baltimore city police conduct their investigation. police are detouring traffic from the hanover street side and also from points north of the accident scene. expect delays in the area. we'll stay on top of the scene and keep you updated.

back to you. >> thank you. captain mike perry, reporting live. a damaging phone conversation forces sir accuse university to -- syracuse university to fire long-time basketball coach. and another accuses bernie fine of sexual abuse. manuel gallegus has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: syracuse university fired assistant basketball coach bernie fine after a third allegation of sexual abuse and the discovery of a 10-year-old audio recording. on the tape, fine's wife acknowledges her husband's alleged sexual abuse, while speaking with one of the accusers, bobby davis. >> bobby is in denial. i think he somehow, through his own mental telepathy, erased him out of his mind. >> reporter: davis accuses fine of molesting him repeatedly at their home and on syracuse basketball trips. he was a ball boy for several

abused. >> this comes on the heels of the child sex abuse scandal. >> reporter: police are searching for a man who is kidnapping and robbing elderly people outside of a business maryland shopping center. vic is in the newsroom with details of the attack. >> reporter: a third kidnapping happened yesterday afternoon, in the parking lot of a target store in wheaton. montgomery county police say the attacker wanted a victim to withdraw cash from an atm. police believe the suspect is responsible for two additional crimes in which elderly people were kidnapped from a giant supermarket in wheaton. in those cases, they also forced the victims to withdraw cash from their bank accounts. >> crime solvers is offering a $1,000 reward for information. you can call. the head of bob ehrlich's campaign for governor last year is defending himself in a baltimore courtroom.

prosecutors say he used illegal robocalls to try to win the election against governor o'malley. wjz is live at the mitchell courthouse. derek valcourt has the latest. >> reporter: the jury was seated just moments ago. they'll now be asked to decide whether those robocalls amounted to an innocent expression of free speech or dirty politics. >> reporter: the phone started ringing on election night, with robocalls to 112,000 registered voters. baltimore judge, lawrence fletcher hill stone was one of them. they heard this. >> governor o'malley and president obama were successful. we're okay. relax. everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> reporter: but the judge said that wouldn't stop him from conducting a fair trial for bob ehrlich's campaign manager, paul shuric, who now faces allegations that he and julian henson attempted to suppress

prison time and fines if convicted. campaign consultant julius henson is scheduled to go on trial on february 6th. officers discovered $25,000 worth of marijuana inside a home in the 800 block of north cathedral street. police initially went to the home to serve an arrest warrant for the unrelated case. they recovered 9 pounds of marijuana andest arrested one man at the scene. the rape of a 13-year-old girl leads to the arrest of a 61-year-old man in baltimore. how science helped police track down their suspect. >> police took a hard line on a suspect they arrested. >> an arrest. and there's really no other way to describe this individual than an utter animal. 61-year-old alvin wright was arrested by baltimore police. >> oh, thank you, jesus. thank you, jesus.

oh, i'm so -- oh, jesus, i'm so happy. >> a 13-year-old girl was grabbed and forced inside. the house is so dilapidated. >> she fell through the first floor into the basement. our suspect then came in, viciously attacked and sexually assaulted her. >> reporter: the strongest lead came from dna samples left by the man on his young victim. because of the nature of the attack, the police dna lab put the case on a fast track. >> this case was prioritized. it was put to the front of the cue. >> reporter: police say the suspect does not have a history of violent crime, but has been arrested in the past on drug charges. and that's how his dna got in the system. >> reporter: from the evidence that we recovered from the forensic medical examination, put that into the database. the two matched up. and that's how we identified mr. wright. >> reporter: who was arrested 24 hours after the lap made the match. and while a trial will determine his guilt or innocence, on north caroline street. >> i don't feel no sympathy for

police say charges are possible for the driver who caused a car crash that killed two teens. andrea fujii has more on this. >> both say the driver was speeding down a dark, windy road. >> family members say john deckman and jeff jiles were inseparable. and friday night, died together. >> they were best friends. >> very close friends. >> reporter: the tworp passengers in a car of five people, driving on lawyers hill road in howard county, when police say the driver was speeding and crashed into a tree. >> only the driver was wearing his seat belt. the other four passengers weren't. and that's something police say could have saved the young men's lives. >> there's a good chance if he would have had his seat belt on, he would have still been alive today. >> reporter: john's family remembered the 18-year-old who wanted to be a math teacher. >> you hear people talk about

their kids and how wonderful their kids are. but i can honestly say, he was ray perfect child. >> reporter: on saturday night, a vigil was held for 19-year- old jeff, at his alma mater, at his high school, where parents talked about his attitude. >> jeffrey was just an incredible kid, young man who literally changed the world. >> reporter: as police considered charges against the 18-year-old driver, the families are split. >> i know they're already talking about pressing charges. but we have no interest in that. that young man is going to pay. >> yeah. >> in his mind, for the rest of his life. >> there's not a place here to judge. but what he did, if he was speeding and caused the accident, you know, he was at fault. >> reporter: but for now, no one is focusing on guilt, only grief. >> reporter: now, police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. the driver is still in the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries.

>> the other two passengers were released from the hospital after over the weekend. >> if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. well, let's give you an update on the accident on west patapsco avenue. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. it is enclosed at the city- county line. three vehicles involved. and traffic is being detoured onto hanover street. but the best case is to avoid the area until they can get that whole mess cleaned up. as far as the rest of the region goes, we still have the accident 95 southbound at gun powder falls. it still has traffic pretty sluggish back to the bel air exit. as far as the harrisburg expressway goes, sluggish in the northbound direction from shawan road to belfast. and north side inner loop, a stop-and-go there. we're also seeing plenty of brake lights around the top side inner loop, from the jones falls expressway to perring parkway.

gaithersburg, maryland sometime tuesday. agents raided his home two weeks ago. the montgomery man is the only suspect in the disappearance of robyn gardner. he went to aruba -- she went to aruba with giordano, after meeting him online. prosecutors pointed the finger at him, but after 100 days in custody, a judge said enough was enough. >> there is no reason for him to be detained. even if there is reason for further investigation. the judge decided she will not grant the prosecution another extension. >> reporter: giordano said gardner was swept out to sea as the pair was snorkeling at sundown. but prosecutors are suspicious giordano tried to cash a large insurance policy. but gard ner -- gardner's family and friends are still looking for answers, including her boyfriend, who started the

robyn gardner foundation to search for her. >> unless there is proof to me that she is not alive, there's no reason for me to think she's not alive. >> reporter: giorda know -- giordano faces charges. a frightening end to a day of shopping at arundel mills. police say a gunman tried to rob a 38-year-old man saturday, as he was getting into his car in the parking lot. the victim argued with the gunman. but the suspect fled into the woods nearby and he's still at large tonight. a dramatic rescue is caught on cell phone following a horrible accident in california. >> well, kai, when a pickup truck overturned, witnesses jumped into action to save a woman who was trapped inside.

there you can see a group of people actually lift up the truck so the woman can be pulled out. this all happened before rescue crews even arrived. another person was inside the pickup. but it's not known whether she survived. >> vic, thank you. the accident closed down the highway for several hours. we're following some developing news. more claims involving republican presidential candidate involving herman cain. a woman claims she had a 13- year affair with cain. he admits he knows the woman, but denies the affair tonight. cain insists he won't quit the presidential race. a standoff in los angeles between occupy wall street protestors and police. demonstrators are defying an order to move out. sandra hughes has more on the intense situation. >> police and riot gear moved in earlier this morning. protestors, blocking city

tensions are rising in pakistan after a cross border attacked by nato. nato fired, killing 24 soldiers. in retaliation, the pakistani government closed a key border crossing that nato uses to move supplies to afghanistan. nato is investigating the incident. the weekend attack has further fueled anger. >> president obama hosted leaders of the european union at the white house today. as danielle nottingham reports for wjz, the subject was the ever-deepening european debt crisis and its threat to the u.s. economy. >> reporter: president obama sat down with leaders of the european union, insisting they must solve their debt crisis and do it fast. >> i communicated to them that the united states stands ready to do our part to help them resolve this issue. >> reporter: the president released the group at the white

alerted a flight attendant. smith was arrested after landing in boston. he's been placed on administrative leave. >> a 200-pound third grader has been removed. the 8-year-old boy has been placed in foster care, after social workers cited medical neglect. the boy has an increased risk for boys with diabetes and hypertension. but his mother says they overreacted in taking her son because his health is not in imminent danger. >> reporter: in tonight's healthwatch, more and more babies are getting flat heads from sleeping on their backs. now, the american academy of pediatrics is releasing guidelines for the syndrome. now, randall pinkston reports from new york. >> reporter: one side of vincent antonucci's head is flat. so the 4-year-old is wearing a helmet to try to reshape it. >> i noticed the flattening at

the 10-week visit and i was really concerned. >> reporter: there's been an increase in children with flat head syndrome, since doctors have said to sleep children on their backs to prevent sides. the a.a.p. says moving the child into different positions or physical therapy on the neck muscles can correct most cases. >> these deformities do happen. most are benign, which means they will go away on their own. >> reporter: the report says parents should keep their babies off their backs as much as they can during the day. and turn the child's head from left to right each night in the crib. >> reporter: doctors say when there is no improvement in six months, that's when parents should see a specialist. but some say acting sooner is best. >> if we know the child is going to need the helmet anyway because the numbers and the asymmetry is so great, i recommend not waiting. because the younger the baby
