suric faces a possibility of prison and fine fist convicted. updating the breaking news we were first to tell you about. a very serious accident in baltimore. captain mike perry with more for you. still not a lot of information as far as what happened with the drivers. but we have a serious accident, with a serious investigation going on. this on patapsco avenue, southwest baltimore, right in the cherry hill area of neighborhood, where you see at least two vehicles here with severe damage. woblg wol one the driver had to be rescued from. we know several children had to be transported to shock trauma. this all occurred just shortly after 4:00 this afternoon. the bus with the children is still here. police remain on the scene. they do have patapsco avenue closed in both directions in the cherry hill area, so you can expect delays, getting into

the scene. it is not clear what the cause of this accident was. and as you can, police are still conducting their investigation. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout the investigation. but it appears at least two people vehicleally injured in this accident. >> all right, captain mike. thank you. a warning for drivers in baltimore county tonight. aftera brazen carjacking. jessica kartalija has more for you. >> stephanie lynn schwab is wanted for a string of climes. take a look at her picture. police say schwab cut the victim on the hand when she fought back. police found the stolen car near where the carjacking attempt happened. police are asking for help as schwab approached, asking for a ride. >> anybody with information is asked to call baltimore county

dark, windy road. >> reporter: family members say john deckman and jeff jiles were inseparable. and on friday night, died together. >> they were close friends. >> very close friends. >> reporter: driving on lawyers hill road in howard county, when police say the driver was speeding and crashed into a tree. >> reporter: only the driver was wearing his seat belt. the other four passengers weren't. and that's something police say could have saved the young men's lives. >> there's a good chance if he would have had a seat belt on, he would still be alive today. >> reporter: john's family remembers the 18-year-old who wanted to be a math teacher. >> you hear people all the time talk about their kids and how wonderful their kids are, but i can honestly say that he was a perfect child. >> reporter: on saturday night, a vigil was held for 19-year- old jeff at his alma mater at his high school, where his parents talked about his positive attitude. >> jeffrey was just an incredible kid who was a young man who literally changed the

world. >> reporter: as police consider charges against the 18-year-old driver, the families are split. >> i know they're already talking about pressing charges. but we have no interest in that. that young man is going to pay. >> yeah. >> in his mind, for the rest of his life. >> there's not a place here to judge. but what he did, if he was speeding and caused the accident, you know, he was at fault. >> reporter: but for now, no one is focusing on guilt. only grief. >> reporter: now, police say alcohol was not a factor in the case. -- crash. the driver is still in the hospital tonight, with nonlife- threatening injuries. mary, back to you. >> andrea, thank you. the other two passengers were released from the hospital over the weekend. two firefighters suffered minor injuries, fighting a large house fire in abingdon, harford county. dozens were called to battle the blaze. sparked by carelessly discarding smoke.

pat warren has reaction from his listeners. >> reporter: it was just over a month ago we were stunned to hear ron smith announce a diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. >> and i certainly didn't want to keep this a secret. too many people knew about it already. and i owed it to my audience to be honest with them, as they try to be honest with them on my comments on political and social matters. >> reporter: this morning on the air, he made the leap from honest to brutally honest. >> well, the decision has been made, by me, to stop appearing on the radio shows. i'm retiring. i -- i basically can no longer do it. i'm getting weaker every day. and it's time to pull the plug. >> reporter: ron smith ends his 26-year long career at wbal radio, after assuring listeners that he would be broadcasting for as long as possible. >> i was hoping i could do it several days a week. >> right. >> but i'm just not up to it.

the rape of a 13-year-old girl leads to the arrest of a 61-year-old man in baltimore city. alex demetrick explains how science helped track down their suspect. >> reporter: police took a hard line on a suspect they arrested. >> an arrest. and there's really no other way to describe this individual than an utter animal. 61-year-old alvin wright was arrested by baltimore police sex offense and child abuse detectives. >> oh, thank you, jesus. thank you, jesus. oh. i'm so -- oh, god, jesus, i'm so happy. >> reporter: that relief in the 800 block of north caroline street follows the shock of what happened inside this abandoned rowhouse five weeks ago, when a 13-year-old girl was grabbed and forced inside. the house is so dilapidated. >> she fell into the first floor into the basement. our suspect came in and

viciously attacked and sexually assaulted her. >> reporter: the dna samples came from what he left on the victim. and this case was put on a fast track. these case was prioritized, put to the front of the queue. >> reporter: police say the suspect does not have a history of violent crime but has had a history of drug charges. that's how his dna got into the system. >> from the evidence we uncovered, put that into the database. the two matched up. and that's how we identified mr. wright. >> reporter: who was arrested, 24 hours after the lab made the match. >> i don't to feel no sympathy for him or anyone that thinks about doing something like that. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> alvin wright faces charges of kidnapping, rape and assault. he is ordered charged held without bond. elderly men kidnapped and

robbed outside a busy maryland shopping center. the suspect is abducting victims from a parking mall in wheaton. he drives around and forces them to withdraw money from their atms. in all, police believe the same man is responsible for three similar crimes. the victim has not been harmed. a high school band receives a top honor from the army. monique griego has more on his spot in this year's all- american bowl. >> reporter: in front of a crowd of supporters, howard high school senior nick teller accepted the all-important jacket he'll wear in the all- american bowl. >> i'm happy i will get this opportunity to play in san antonio. >> reporter: he is one of 125 marching band students selected selected from across the country to play at the game's halftime show. the bowl, which features high school football standouts is broadcast by national television. >> this is a very elite

73, the record. we're only 4 degrees shy of that. 15, the record low in 19mon. right now, east winds and southeast winds will continue to moisten up the atmosphere. i think that's why overnight, maybe a little drizzle, low clouds forming, particularly by the morning. and by 10:00, 11:00 in the morning, probably will start see something rain in the area. and from this area of low pressure, sitting out to the south of us. western tennessee and northern georgia, alabama. but it's moving to our west. not directly going to impact us with the heaviest rain. but rain down here across the carolinas, will be sliding up toward our region. right now, south of us, it's really clear in virginia. but with clear skies and that moisture coming in. that sets up the possibility of those low clouds and fog overnight. so the rain will be with us during the day tomorrow. probably ending by maybe 8:00, 9:00 in the evening. and then once it passes, dryer, northwest winds come in. we'll start cooling down tomorrow night. and significantly cooler, compared to what we've seen on

wednesday, with partly cloudy skies. looks like a lot of sun. and temperatures pretty close to normal for the end of the week. really, one day of rain this week. southeast winds, 10 to 15 on the bay. bay temp around 52 degrees. so tonight, becoming cloudy overnight. maybe a little fog and drizzle during the early morning hours. 52 for our low. 63. still mild at least early in the day. with rain developing by before noon and continuing until early evening before it clears out. and looks like wednesday, the sun is back. so a lot cooler, where it should be in november. >> but got the sun back. thank you, bob. prince william proved that he takes his job very seriously. the prince took part in a daring rescue and search mission after a cargo ship sinks in the irish sea. mark phillips has more on what happened. >> reporter: it was a rough overnight shift for prince william in terrible conditions. by the time the royal air force helicopter, which he was copilotting was first to arrive

on the scene, in the early hours of sunday morning, the russian cargo ship that had put out a distress call had already sunk. the task, recorded by the helicopter's nightview camera was to try to find and rescue survivors, two of which were found bobbing in a life raft. a winch man is lowered. and one by one, he manages to get a harness around the seamen and they're hoisted to safety. but one crewman from the ship is known to have died. an empty life ring the only sign of where he might have been. five others thought to be missing. the strong gale still blowing. other helicopters joined in the search. but the russian cargo ship had gone down too fast. >> it was struck by an enormous wave. she rolled and broke her back. and obviously, it was such a catastrophic failure, she sank very quickly. >> reporter: prince william is on a three-year assignment as a search-and-rescue pilot.

tonight. another prominent east coast university rocked by a sex abuse scandal. syracuse university fired assistant basketball coach bernie fine and now secretly- recorded phone calls are coming out. manuel gallegus reports for wjz, with more on the scandal rocking the university. >> reporter: syracuse university fired assistant basketball coach bernie fine after a third allegation of sexual abuse and the discovery of a 10-year-old audio recording. on the tape, fine's wife acknowledges her husband's alleged sexual abuse, while speaking with one of his accusers, bobby davis. >> bobby is also in denial. i think the things he did. but he somehow through his own mental telepathy, erased it out of his mind. >> reporter: davis repeated fine that he molested him at his home. davis was a ball boy for six years. >> he grabbed my hand and then.

december, has the longest consecutive streak. >> there is word tonight of another possible victim. jerry san dunky is charged with abusing eight boys. notice, police have received a letter from a prison inmate in oklahoma claiming he may have been abused by san dunky. -- san dunky. . a showdown is brewing over the future of the occupy movement in los angeles. those protestors defied an order to move out this morning. police in riot gear moved in. they cleared the streets but did not move in. a few protests broke out. the mayor says he wants to avoid violent clashes that have played out in other parts of the nation. he wants to give protestors time to move out. new details in the case of a maryland man in aruba.

gary giordano is being set free. >> reporter: gary giordano is expected back at his home in gaithersburg, maryland, sometime tuesday. fbi raided his home two weeks ago. he is the only suspect in the disappearance of robyn gardner. the 35-year-old from frederick went to aruba with giordano, after meeting him online. prosecutors immediately pointed the finger at giordano, but after more than 100 days in custody, an aruban judge said enough is enough. >> there is no reason for him to remain detained, even if there is reason for further investigation, the judge decided she will not grant the prosecution another extension. >> reporter: giordano said gardner was swept out to sea as the pair were snorkeling at sundown. but prosecutors are suspicious, giordano tried to cash in on a big insurance policy on gardner.

the judge decided the time frame to charge him had come and gone. robyn gardner's boyfriend has started a foundation to raise money to search for her. >> unless there is proof to me that she's not alive, there's no reason to think otherwise. >> reporter: the release will come with no conditions. however, he faces a possible grand jury indictment here in maryland. report says it centers on insurance fraud, connected to the $1.5 million travel insurance policy he tried to crash. an attempted armed robbery in the parking lot. the victim refused and the suspect eventually fled and ran to a wooded area nearby. police searched the area but did not find the suspect. time now for a quick look at some of the stories you'll find in tomorrow morning's edition of the baltimore sun. a maryland woman and her efforts to gain the release of her husband from a cuban jail. a baltimore company is using the helicopter and billboards

into different positions or physical therapy on the neck muscles can correct most cases. >> these deformities do happen. most of them are benign, which means they will go away on their own. >> reporter: the report says parents should keep babies off their backs as much as possible during the day. they should increase stomach play time, limit the car seat, swing or bouncy seat and turn the child's head, each night from left to right in the child's crib. >> reporter: doctors say if there is no improvement in six months, that's when parents should see a specialist. but some experts say in severe cases, acting sooner is best. >> if we know the child is going to need the helmet anyway, because the numbers and the asymmetry is so great, i recommend not waiting. because the younger the baby is, the softer the bones are, and the faster the bones grow. >> reporter: the antonuccis tried everything but decided a helmet was the best option for everything. >> i think sufficiency -- it was so significant, the flattening, i knew it wasn't going to get better on its own.

it's an historic election day in egypt. thousands head to the polls, some for the very first time. but as tina kraus reports for wjz, not everybody casting a ballot. >> reporter: egyptians waited in lines that stretched around blocks, to vote in the first election since the fall of president hosni mubarak. when he was in power, results were rigged. so this time, egyptians believe they have a voice. he says all of my life, i've never voted until right now. i feel like my vote has value, she says. security is tight at the polls after nine days of clashes in cairo killed more than 40 people. the massive crowds of protestors in tahrir square have dwindled. the dozens who remain are refusing to vote, saying egypt's military government, which took control after mubarak's ouster, must go first. >> reporter: the army did not step down, says this protestor. none of our demands were
