we are the 99%. >> surrounded with a deadline come and gone, los angeles police move in on the occupy wall street camp. second thoughts. herman cain campaign denies they are rethinking a run for the white house. and long distance. a frisbee toss goes viral but what is more impressive? the throw or the catch? captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, november 30th, 2011. good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. we begin in los angeles. overnight, the police began to clear the occupy wall street camp. large numbers of riot-equipped police began assembling early this morning. police are enforcing a monday morning deadline for them to leave their encampment at city hall.

sandra hughes is in los angeles with the latest. >> reporter: the arrests began a few moments ago. as you said, there are hundreds and hundreds of los angeles police officers down here. most of them are inside that park and they are lined up on sidewalks, trying to separate the crowd. the three people who were arrested, it was not a very violent arrest from what i understand, but they did have to be pushed to the ground to be handcuffed and then carried out. there are about a hundred people inside the camp with their arms locked surrounding a symbolic tent. they tell me they have no plans of leaving the camp this morning, that they are willing to be arrested for a cause they very much believe in. terrell? >> sandra, los angeles had been relatively tolerant of the protesters. why crack down now? >> reporter: well, it's a good question. you're right. the police have had a very good relationship with the protesters up to this point. in fact, l.a.'s mayor has said all along that he wants to give

the occupy wall street campers ample time to tear down the camp, to take their tents with them. so many of them right now, say they feel very betrayed that this is coming down in this way. a police source i just spoke with said she is very hopeful this all takes place without any violence. so far, we have seen no tear gas and no real confrontations between the police and the crowd. i was just inside there a few minutes ago. there was some shouting from the protesters into the face of the police. a few people were knocked down. but so far, no injuries to report. >> we will be watching. sandra hughes in los angeles, thank you. police in philadelphia cleared the occupy protesters camp there. protesters have camped out at the plaza near city hall since october 6th. they were given a deadline to leave two days ago. there were no arrests. politics now. the up and down candidacy of herman cain. he is said to be reassessing his campaign.

he admitted to aides that claims that a long time extramarital affair is taking an emotional toll on his family. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on that. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. >> reporter: cain is still denying all allegations of sexual harassment and this affair, but he says he now needs to decide if his campaign is just too damaged to continue. >> life can be a challenge. life can seem impossible. it's never easy. >> reporter: that's as close as herman cain got to discussing his campaign troubles at a speech last night in michigan. in the latest in a string of distractions, ginger white claimed monday she had carried on a 13-year extramarital affair with the candidate that ended earlier this year. >> i was aware that he was married. and i was also aware that i was involved in a very inappropriate situation. >> reporter: cain denied the

charge, calling her just a friend he had helped out financially. but in a campaign conference call, he acknowledged the accusation, especially on top of sexual harassment claims, could end his run for the white house. we have to do an assessment as to whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud, he said, according to a national journal transcript, and told staffers, the allegations have, quote, taken a toll on my wife and family, as you would imagine. the campaign later denied they were even considering dropping out of the race. >> may i shake your hand? >> reporter: while cain struggles, newt gingrich is soaring. the former house speaker is quickly picking up support and adding staff and campaign cash, calling himself the conservative alternative. he is increasingly taking shots at fellow front-runner mitt romney. >> it's wrong to go around and adopt radically different positions. based on your need of any one election. >> reporter: and he is not counting out cain quite yet. >> remember, i was supposed to

be dead in june and july. i am not going to go around and declare anybody else dead. >> reporter: cain has lost some republican support since this new allegation has come to light. fults of his campaign may very well depend on whether contributions keep coming in to support it. terrell? >> susan mcginnis in washington this morning, thank you. elsewhere in politic another apparent slip by texas governor rick perry. speaking at a new hampshire college yesterday, perry was seeking votes for some young. but apparently left some out. appears he didn't know since 1971, the u.s. voting age is 18. take a listen. >> those of you that will be 21 by november the 12th, i ask for your support and your vote. those of you who won't be, just work hard, because you're going to inherit this. >> perry made another slip too, referring to november the 12th, election day 2012. it's scheduled for november 6th. meanwhile, perry has denied that the campaign is in the major staff shake-up. american businessman gary

giordano is still in aruba this morning but out of prison. he is the suspect in the disappearance of his travel companion. he was released last night. he had been held for nearly four months. aruban prosecutors are appealing to get him back behind bars. robin gardner vanished in august. giordano said she was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. police say he is still the prime suspect in the case. >> reporter: syracuse head basketball coach jim boeheim says he is not worried about his job. last night he complimented on allegations of sexual molestation leveled against his long time assistant bernie fine. >> i do my job. what happened on my watch, we will see. when the investigation is done, we will find out what happened on my watch. we don't know what's happened on my watch right now. there is an investigation under way.

any headway in their debt crisis talks. hong kong hang sang last 1.5% and japan's nikkei lost a fraction. today, wall street gets the latest on the labor market. more on home sales and the latest fed economic data. tuesday, a jump in consumer confidence helped stocks finish with some gains. the dow was up 32 points, while the nasdaq lost nearly 12. wall street will be watching this morning for reaction after standard & poor's rating service downgraded the biggest banks in the u.s. the following banks were among those cut at least one notch. s&p says the changes reflect a new formula for determining risk. american airlines says its bankruptcy filing will have little, if any, effect on its passengers. american and its parent company amr filed for chapter 11 protection yesterday. 240,000 people fly with american every day. the carrier says it will

continue to fly its normal schedule and honor all tickets and reservations. facebook has reached a deal with the federal government over charges it gave away too much information about its users to advertisers. under the settlement, facebook agreed to get customers approval before sharing their data and a blog post, ceo mark zuckerberg admitted facebook had made, in his words, a bunch of mistakes. google maps are going indoors. now you can get maps to malls and airports and transit centers as long as you're wearing a tablet or phone that is running android software. google is hoping more owners and operators will submit floor plans. i know it's pretty good for the malls. when i hit a new one, i like to know where i'm going. >> for a lot of folks who hit the airports and want to know where they are going. getting out of control to find a floor plan of your house. how did google get in my house. ashley, appreciate it. thank you.

behind bars this morning after serving the first night of his four-year sentence for the death of michael jackson. the judge who handed down the maximum punishment also gave murray a piece of his mind. ben tracy reports. >> dr. murray engaged in a recurring, continuous pattern of deceit, of lies. >> reporter: judge michael pastor delivered a scathing rebuke of dr. conrad murray. >> he engaged in this money for medicine madness that is simply not going to be tolerated by me. >> reporter: he called murray a disgrace to his profession and seemed disgusted that murray never showed remorse for giving michael jackson the powerful anesthetic propofol. murray claimed that jackson demanded the drug that ultimately killed him. >> i hurt, you know? i hurt. >> reporter: the judge implied that murray made this iphone recording of a drugged michael

jackson so he could late use it as blackmail. >> that tape recording was dr. murray's insurance policy. >> reporter: many of jackson's family did not speak in sport. their attorney brian pannish read a statement. >> we respectfully request that you impose a sentence that reminds physicians that they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder. >> reporter: dr. murray was offered $150,000 per month to treat jackson, but was never paid. murray declined to speak before being sentenced and blew a kiss as he left the courtroom. murray's attorney jay michael flanagan said he was not surprised the judge gave murray the maximum sentence. >> i think the judge probably wanted to hear from him too, but then i think the judge would belittle whatever he had to say. >> reporter: despite the four-year sentence, dr. murray will serve, at most, two years behind bars and that is because of overcrowding here in california. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. this morning, on "the early show," more on why the judge threw the book at dr. conrad murray.
